Cake's context-parallel GDN training kernel has one data-type variant: BF16 q/k/v/out/dout and FP32 scalar log-decay g and beta. dq/dk are reduced in FP32 over the value heads of each Q/K head and converted to the output type once. The grouped Q/K head counts (H_qk, HV) are runtime parameters, and the production shape is (16, 48). The kernel has three partition layouts: contiguous, whole-buffer zigzag, and per-document zigzag + ragged. It provides fused forward, backward from the saved set, checkpoint replay (non-reentrant and reentrant), an optional causal-conv1d halo exchange, and exact cross-rank state passing. This PR delivers the same variant with two changes. First, the backward state-propagation (adjoint-walk) kernel for the 64-wide value-head "offset" form now loads its two 256-bit dv/i carriers one step ahead. It also keeps its chunk table in a two-slot shared-memory ring, as the "tape" form already did. Its dynamic shared memory grows from 82944 to 83968 bytes. Second, the host-side partition plan now uses an LPT (longest-processing-time) per-rank segment rule by default to choose each rank's segment count. The previous rule is still available through the keyword-only p_rule option. The rule is a pure function of the fragment tables, HV and the SM count, so it is identical on every rank. At 152 SMs it changes the segment vector on five of the 120 measured (pack, CP, layout) rows. All other kernels are unchanged. The forward columns therefore show the plan change only where its segment vector changed, and the training-step columns show both changes. The baseline is the previous version of this package, PR #7668.
NVIDIA GB300 (sm_103a, CUDA 13.4) — context-parallel GDN layer, (H_qk, HV) = (16, 48), head dim 128, CP = 2, 4, 8, 16; latency per call of the slowest rank (median over repeats). Forward = module forward; training step = forward + checkpoint recompute + backward, communication included. Baseline: the previous version of this package (#7668) on the same layout.

Cake's GDN inference kernels for chunked prefill and decode ship separately, the KDA context-parallel training sibling flashinfer/experimental/cake_kda_train covers the per-channel-gate form, and this kernel ships on sm_100a, sm_103a and sm_107a.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Row planning now defaults to a workload-aware strategy that can reduce the slowest rank’s processing steps. The existing row_cost strategy remains available.
Bug Fixes
Corrected handling of additional state segments and input columns in training kernels.
Updated shared-memory requirements for a kernel to support its revised execution.
The KCP plan picks P segments per fragment on every rank from the row's fragment
tables. The shipped rule "row_cost" chose one whole-row program ("wave_fill1",
"occ" or "one"). The new rule "row_cost_lpt" starts from that plan and lets a
rank that "row_cost" planned at P > 1 in the wave regime (1 <= n_frag <= 3,
NC_max_frag >= 257) move to the P that minimises its crossing-aware LPT walk
cost (smallest P within ROW_COST_LPT_MARGIN_PCT = 2 % of the optimum), under two
gates: (i) the rank's walk steps (5 * summary + 3 * tape LPT makespans) must not
grow, (ii) the row's slowest-rank walk steps must shorten by at least
ROW_COST_LPT_ROW_MARGIN_PCT = 4 % or the row keeps the "row_cost" vector. A rank
"row_cost" plans at P = 1 never enters the replacement, and a candidate that
moves such a rank off P = 1 is rejected for the whole row. The rule is a pure
function of (fragment tables, HV, SM count), identical on every rank.
P_RULE_DEFAULT becomes "row_cost_lpt" (build_kcp_context / KcpContext default);
"row_cost" and the per-rank rules stay selectable through the keyword-only
p_rule knob. kcp_plan_row keeps p_rule="row_cost" as its own default.
Changed rows (zero-GPU census of the plan module over every perf, correctness
and adversarial row at every CP and layout, SM count 152 = GB300 and the GB200
of record): exactly the five rows below; CP1, CP2, CP8 and CP16 rows and all
C/A rows keep their "row_cost" vector.

Rows that did not pass and what happened to them: P2 CP4 Z, P3 CP2 C and P5 CP2 C
were changed by the first spelling of the rule and failed the adoption line
(their GB300 PAIR lines are in the table). P3 CP2 C is structural: the ranks
left the unsegmented P = 1 path for a 9-19-segment chain, a cost the walk-step
model does not contain; the final rule excludes delivered-P = 1 ranks for that
reason. P2 CP4 Z and P5 CP2 C had modelled bounds of 3.65 % and 3.16 %, below
the final 4 % row margin, so the final rule keeps their "row_cost" vectors.
The GB200 P3 CP2 Z and P5 CP2 Z sessions ran identical plans on both arms (the
device reports 152 SMs; the census's 148-SM column is model output for a
device that was not measured) and read as A/A controls.
Composition order, disclosed: the GB300 sessions measured spelling v2 of the
rule (walk-monotone rank gate + 2 % row gate) selected via p_rule. Spelling v3
(the delivered-P = 1 exclusion and the 4 % row margin, calibrated on the GB300
results without the structurally failed P3 CP2 C row) was composed after those
measurements; v3 plans the five changed rows exactly as v2 did (census), so the
GB300 lines apply to the delivered rule unchanged, and every GB200 session ran
v3. History of record: v1 (census spelling, failed the pre-registered kill line
on 8 rows) -> v2 -> v3 (final); a v4 with an NC_max_frag <= 512 regime bound
was attempted and withdrawn (it would have dropped the measured-PASS P3 CP4 C
and P5 CP4 C rows, and its motivation was the void 148-SM reading).

Docstring correction, text only: the four passages that still called "row_cost" the shipped default (module
docstring, the P_RULES comment, the kcp_plan_row and build_kcp_context docstrings) now name "row_cost_lpt" as the
default and "row_cost" as the selectable legacy rule; with docstrings and comments stripped the module's AST is
identical before and after the edit (sha256 of both dumps in the delivery record), so the gate evidence above was
measured on this code unchanged.
Tests: ROW_COST_LPT_CHANGED pins the five changed vectors (census fixture, SM count 152); a new rows-of-record test
checks the default context against it; the "row_cost" tests select that rule explicitly; the default-rule test
asserts P_RULE_DEFAULT == "row_cost_lpt" and that kcp_plan refuses both row rules.
Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
The PR changes the default KCP row-planning rule to row_cost_lpt, updates GDN kernel data handling and offset-walk pipelining, and refreshes Cake build metadata and hashes. Tests add coverage for the new planner behavior.

Summary
Row-planning rule and validation flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train/cake_kcp_plan.py, tests/experimental/test_cake_gdn_train_kcp.py
Adds row_cost_lpt as the context default, with per-rank and whole-row gates. Keeps row_cost selectable. Tests cover the new rule, recorded plan vectors, and row-planning constraints.
Kernel data handling and table pipeline flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train/cake_jit.py, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train/csrc/cake_gdn_train_*.cu
Adds a two-stage shared-memory table pipeline to the offset-walk kernel and updates input-segment residual calculations and state-segment handling in related kernels. The binding and JIT launch record use 83,968 bytes of dynamic shared memory.
Generated kernel updates and build records flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train/csrc/cake_gdn_train_*.cu, flashinfer/experimental/cake_gdn_train/build*.json
Revises local variable names in generated kernels while retaining the described calculations and memory operations. Updates Cake revision metadata and source and closure hashes; library configurations remain unchanged.

The description provides detailed technical context and benchmark results, but it omits the required template sections and declarations, including related issues, pre-commit and test checklist status, experimental-track tracking information, and the mandatory experimental-tests block.
Resolution
Add the required pull request template sections. Complete the pre-commit and test checklist, provide test targets and results, and declare whether full-scope CI is required. Because this changes code under flashinfer/experimental/, add the experimental tracking issue, required owner and graduation-plan details, and a valid experimental-tests fenced block containing the intended tests under tests/experimental/. Include related issue links where applicable.

Add an unconditional CPU-only regression test for the LPT branch.
The row-of-record test is skipped when GDN_ROWS_DIR is unset. The unconditional test derives want from the same row_cost_lpt call that it checks, so it does not independently protect wave_regime, lpt_rank_P, or the row gate.
Add a synthetic case that has 1–3 fragments, NC_max_frag >= 257, and row_cost.P > 1. Pin an expected row_cost_lpt vector that differs from row_cost. Include cases for the rank walk gate and the 4% row gate, plus a repeated-call determinism check.
Do not assert that every non-wave rank always equals its row_cost value. The whole-row occ/one alternatives remain active and can change all ranks. Assert that a non-wave rank is unchanged only in a case where the whole-row policy is unchanged.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Extract the chain construction that walk_steps_rank_b3 copies from row_cost_rank_10ns.
Lines 837-842 repeat the summary and tape list construction of row_cost_rank_10ns (Lines 787-792). This includes the P > 1 or crossing_out condition. Both models must use the same chain definition. If one copy changes alone, the row_cost_lpt walk-step gates and the cost model silently disagree. Move the construction into one helper that both functions call.
Then use summary, tape = _rank_chains(table, HV, P) in walk_steps_rank_b3. Make the same change in row_cost_rank_10ns.

Cake's context-parallel GDN training kernel has one data-type variant: BF16 q/k/v/out/dout and FP32 scalar log-decay g and beta. dq/dk are reduced in FP32 over the value heads of each Q/K head and converted to the output type once. The grouped Q/K head counts
(H_qk, HV)are runtime parameters, and the production shape is (16, 48). The previous rule is still available through the keyword-onlyp_ruleoption. The rule is a pure function of the fragment tables,HVand the SM count, so it is identical on every rank. At 152 SMs it changes the segment vector on five of the 120 measured (pack, CP, layout) rows. All other kernels are unchanged. The forward columns therefore show the plan change only where its segment vector changed, and the training-step columns show both changes.
