Review comments at @include/flashinfer/norm/fused_dit_layernorm.cuh:
- Line 449: Update the outputScale calculation to retain the vecMax zero-block
guard alongside the SFValue check. When vecMax is zero, set outputScale to zero;
otherwise, preserve the existing SFValue check and reciprocal behavior.

Preserve the vecMax zero check for the E8M0 path.
For vecMax == 0.f, the conversion uses cudaRoundPosInf and stores E8M0 byte 0. E8M0 byte 0 represents 2^-127, not 0.f or NaN. The FTZ reciprocal flushes this subnormal input to zero and returns infinity. Multiplying zero elements by infinity produces NaNs. Retain the original zero-block guard.

Review comment at @include/flashinfer/norm/fused_dit_layernorm.cuh at line 449:
Update the outputScale calculation to retain the vecMax zero-block guard
alongside the SFValue check. When vecMax is zero, set outputScale to zero;
otherwise, preserve the existing SFValue check and reciprocal behavior.

Approving pending CI — thanks for following #2441 through to the remaining sites; the change only affects blocks whose rounded scale is zero, and everything else stays bit-identical.
One correction for the description and release note: the user-visible NaN is in the MXFP8 output of the DiT layernorm (the e8m0 site), while the NVFP4 sites only change raw e2m1 codes under a zero scale byte, which already dequantized to 0.
Please add regression tests for an underflowing block in tests/utils/test_fp4_kv_quantization.py and tests/norm/test_fused_dit_layernorm.py; CI covers SM100/SM103/SM120, so they can run there.
Two non-blocking suggestions are inline, and I will start a scoped CI run once the PR is final.

e8m0 has no zero encoding, so an all-zero block gets byte 0x00 (2^-127, an fp32 denormal), and SFValue != 0.f only treats it as zero because the norm module is built with FTZ; without -ftz the explicit rcp.approx.ftz returns inf and the all-zero block turns into NaN. Guarding on the byte (fp8SFVal != 0) removes the dependence on the compile flag, and this is the site worth a regression test (an all-zero block and a block near 1e-37 with use_mxfp8=True, asserting no NaN codes).

The stock NVFP4 quantizer still guards vecMax at csrc/nv_internal/tensorrt_llm/kernels/quantization_utils.cuh:505, :723 and :734, so on an underflowing block nvfp4_quantize_smooth now emits zero codes while nvfp4_quantize emits saturated ones, which breaks the bit-equivalence test_nvfp4_quantize_smooth relies on. Could you apply the same guard there in this PR?

CODEOWNERS gap attestation (not a code review).
A code owner of a changed path has approved this PR:
- @kahyunnam -> include/flashinfer/norm/fused_dit_layernorm.cuh
The following files match only the catch-all rule; this approval covers that technical gap under the one-approval policy. GitHub still requires each owned path's own owner.

…lashInfer 0.7.3 does flashinfer-ai/flashinfer#6996 (in 0.7.3) changed nvfp4_kv_quantize to guard the rounded E4M3 scale instead of the block amax, so a block whose scale underflows to zero now stores an all-zero payload instead of a saturated one. The fused MiniMax-M3.1 KV store reproduces that quantizer bit for bit, so make the same change; test_fused_store_matches_separate_stores failed on its _tiny case. Dequantized values are unchanged: a zero scale reads back as zero either way. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
📌 Description
Five block-scale quantization sites guard
vecMaxwhile consuming the fp8-rounded scale factor, so a block whose SF underflows to zero emits NaN and inf instead of quantizing to zeros (#6994). #2441 fixed this construction incvt_warp_fp16_to_mxfp8by guarding the post-rounding value, and this PR applies the same change to the five sites that kept the weak guard:include/flashinfer/gemm/nvfp4_smooth_quantize_sm100.cuh(cvt_warp_fp16_to_fp4,quantizeSmoothed16)include/flashinfer/norm/fused_dit_layernorm.cuh(two sites, e4m3 and e8m0)csrc/fp4_kv_quantization.cu(quantize_fp16_to_e2m1_with_scaling)Each change replaces the
vecMax != 0condition withSFValue != 0(the post-rounding value already computed on the previous line) and carries a short comment pointing at the #2441 rationale. The strong-guard form this produces is already present in the tree atquantization_utils.cuh:892andtrtllm_moe_allreduce_fusion.cuh:622. Blocks that underflow now getoutputScale = 0.0fand quantize to all zeros, matching #2441's fixed semantics. Every block whose SF survives the rounding is unaffected, because the guard only changes behavior when the rounded SF is exactly zero.🔍 Related Issues
