perf(moe): split the topK reduction in small-batch trtllm-gen MoE finalize - #6546
Conversation
…alize At decode batch sizes the finalize step used finalizeKernel, where each thread reads one scalar element per expert and walks topK dependent index/data loads serially. For high top-k models this dominated the fixed cost of a MoE call (e.g. ~4 us for a top-22 model at one token). Add finalizeKernelSmallBatch for the same regime: one CTA per (token, hidden slice), 128-bit loads, and the topK reduction split across thread groups (at most four loads per thread) combined through shared memory. The large-batch vectorized kernel and the DeepSeek FP8 path are unchanged. Whole-op FP4 MoE latency (PDL on, default tactic, CUDA graph, median of 3 interleaved rounds), old vs new finalize: - Rubin (SM107): top-22 1.02-1.08x, top-16 1.02-1.05x, top-8 1.00-1.02x - GB300 (SM103): top-22 1.01-1.08x, top-16 1.01-1.06x, top-8 1.00-1.02x - GB200 (SM100): top-22 1.02-1.09x, top-16 1.01-1.06x, top-8 1.01x Shapes beyond the small-batch threshold run the unchanged kernel and move within +-0.4%. Outputs match the previous kernel to 1.2e-4 relative to peak (summation order). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A finalize-only sweep (hidden 1024-7168, topK 1-32, all small-batch token counts, bf16/fp32 expert weights) on SM100, SM103 and SM107 showed the small-batch kernel is slower when the whole topK fits in a single thread group: topK 1 and 4 regress by up to 15% (0.1-0.25 us). Every topK >= 6 is faster on all three (min 1.06x, median 1.13-2.0x). Dispatch the small-batch kernel only for topK > 4, and name the topK-group cap. …batch finalize finalizeKernelSmallBatch read expandedIdxToPermutedIdx and the expert weights after cudaGridDependencySynchronize, so the GEMM-output loads waited on a second dependent global round trip. Both come from routing, which has completed before the GEMMs this kernel depends on can start, so read them before the wait (as finalizeKernelVecLoad already does). Only the GEMM output is read after the wait. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Trigger programmatic launch completion at the start of finalizeKernelSmallBatch so the following kernel launches while finalize runs; it waits on this grid before reading the output. This matches the activation kernels in the same file. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…ting kernels routingIndicesBlockKernel and routingIndicesDynBlockKernel triggered their dependents only after all routing writes. The trtllm-gen batched GEMMs that follow guard every routing-dependent load with a grid dependency (gridWaitForPrimaryRouting), so trigger right after the kernels own grid wait and let the GEMM launch and run its prologue while routing computes. Measured together with the two finalize changes on GLM-5.2 FP4 MoE (H6144 / I512 / E256 / top-8, PDL on), versus the previous head: - Rubin (SM107), flashinfer_benchmark, 3 GPUs x 3 interleaved rounds: T1 1.038x, T8 1.035x; Nemotron-Ultra top-22 T1 1.058x, T8 1.025x. - CUDA-graph latency: Rubin, GB300 and GB200 all improve at 1-16 tokens. PDL-on outputs are bitwise equal to PDL-off over 900 routings (T1-T16) on each architecture, and the small-token MoE tests pass. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Wait for the PDL dependency before reading routing metadata.
With PDL enabled, both routing kernels trigger their dependents before writing mPtrExpandedIdxToPermutedIdx. permuteKernel and activationKernel also trigger before waiting for their own dependencies. Therefore, the finalize kernels can start before the routing grid has completed.
finalizeKernelVecLoad and finalizeKernelSmallBatch read expandedIdxToPermutedIdx before cudaGridDependencySynchronize(). A stale index can select the wrong GEMM row or produce an invalid inPtr address. Move the metadata reads after the dependency wait in both kernels, or restore the routing trigger to the end of each routing kernel after all routing writes.

…alize (#6546) <!-- .github/pull_request_template.md --> ## 📌 Description At decode batch sizes the trtllm-gen MoE finalize step (`finalize::run`, non-DeepSeek path) uses `finalizeKernel`, where each thread reads one scalar element per expert and walks the topK dependent index/data loads serially. For high top-k models this is a large share of a MoE call's fixed cost at one token. This adds `finalizeKernelSmallBatch` for the same regime (`ceil(hidden/256) * numTokens < 1184`, 128-bit aligned hidden, `4 < topK <= 64`): - one CTA per (token, hidden slice), 128-bit loads; - the topK reduction is split across `blockDim.y` thread groups so each thread issues at most four independent loads, and partial sums are combined through shared memory; - the routing permutation and expert weights are read before `cudaGridDependencySynchronize()` (they come from routing, which has completed before the GEMMs this kernel depends on can start, as `finalizeKernelVecLoad` already assumes); only the GEMM output is read after the wait; - programmatic launch completion is triggered at kernel start, so the next kernel can launch while finalize runs. For `topK <= 4` the whole topK fits in one thread group, the shared-memory reduction costs more than it saves, and the previous kernel is kept. The large-batch `finalizeKernelVecLoad` path and `finalizeDeepSeekKernel` are unchanged. The new kernel is arch-generic. ### Performance **Finalize only** (`trtllm_moe_run_finalize`, PDL on, CUDA graph, median of 3 interleaved rounds), new vs previous kernel over hidden {1024, 2048, 2880, 3584, 4096, 5120, 6144, 7168} x every small-batch token count x bf16/fp32 expert weights.
