FI PR draft (round 3) — title: perf(cake_ssd_combined): preprocess, exact-scan and chunk-parallel prefill improvements (SM100 / SM103)

Summary

Third performance round of the Cake Mamba2 SSD combined prefill (SSDCombined(backend="cake"), cake_ssd_combined_fwd), SM100 (B200) and SM103 (B300 / GB300). Exact arithmetic is preserved: every change below is schedule-only or a new program with a host-side selection rule; the outputs are bitwise identical to the previous release on the full bitwise shape set on both architectures.

  • Segment preprocess: one warp per (segment, head) tile, eight heads per CTA, dt rows staged through shared memory for coalesced loads. Single-chunk preprocess time drops from ~19–26 µs to ~4 µs (B200) / ~3.8 µs (B300). A programmatic-dependent-launch variant of the main kernel was measured and dropped: the early-trigger form regressed multi-wave rows (the 1×32768 batched row 26 → 59 µs) and the late-trigger form gained nothing, so the two kernels stay plain back-to-back launches.
  • Exact scan: in-place scaled-B operand (MN-major alias view) with a double-buffered state operand, Q kept in the TMEM stage; 1–6 % faster on multi-chunk shapes, bitwise identical.
  • Chunk-parallel program (new generated family chunkpar_*): a three-phase persistent kernel (per-chunk local states → cross-chunk scan → output) with a grid barrier, for long sequences with few (segment, head) work items. Selected by a calibrated host cost model (per-capability constants, 5 % margin, 256 MiB workspace cap, only when work_items < sm_count); FLASHINFER_CAKE_SSD_CHUNK_PARALLEL=auto|always|never overrides. 1×32768 tokens × 8 heads: 688 → 160 µs (B200), 667 → 153 µs (B300). Bitwise identical to the exact scan.
  • Loader: per-family host templates (host/mamba_ssd_combined_sequence.cpp, host/mamba_ssd_combined_chunk_parallel_sequence.cpp), _CHUNKPAR_MODULES, workspace management, last_program_name.

  • compute-sanitizer synccheck + memcheck on the exact-scan and chunk-parallel programs: 0 errors on both archs.
  • sglang adapter tests against this exact FI head: CPU route tests 47 passed (GB200, GB300), GPU route tests 42 passed (GB200, GB300); B200 pair: CPU route tests 47 passed, GPU route tests 42 passed.
  • Nemotron-H-8B-Reasoning-128K BF16 TP1 end-to-end (sglang, GB200, this exact FI head): GSM8K-200 accuracy 0.890 with the Cake SSD route vs 0.890 stock, 117/200 identical answers, 6/6 symmetric flips, no NaN/Inf, all short-prompt and prefix-hit probes finite and greedy-identical between the cached and cold paths.

Launch contract

The chunk-parallel family (chunkpar_*) is a persistent kernel whose CTAs meet at a software grid barrier. Its resources (512 threads, __launch_bounds__(512, 1), 231,936 B of dynamic shared memory, a full 512-column TMEM allocation) fit exactly one CTA per SM, and the host launches min(num_segments * nheads, sm_count) CTAs, so on an otherwise idle device every CTA is resident. The launch is an ordinary (non-cooperative) launch: if other work holds SMs when the grid starts, the resident CTAs wait at the barrier until those CTAs retire; a true hang needs two grid-barrier kernels sharing the device and waiting on each other. FLASHINFER_CAKE_SSD_CHUNK_PARALLEL=never disables the family. The Cake host emitter carries the cooperative launch attribute in its extended-launch form, but the prepared-sequence host used by this family does not emit it yet; enabling it is an exporter change plus regeneration and re-measurement, tracked as a follow-up (see the review thread on the launch site).

CI

Docs-only follow-up commit 6173dac0d adds FLASHINFER_CAKE_SSD_CHUNK_PARALLEL to the CLAUDE.md environment variable reference (static documentation check); no code or generated-file changes.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

CakeSSDCombined supports exact-scan and chunk-parallel kernels for BF16, FP16, and FP32 states in batched and variable-length modes. It selects a family per call using calibrated estimates and an environment override, then prepares the corresponding workspace and launch arguments.

Layer / File(s) Summary
Program contracts and preprocess sizing
flashinfer/mamba/cake_ssd_combined.py, tests/mamba/test_cake_ssd_combined.py
Program metadata and generated-source checks cover both kernel families, their host templates, argument orders, and shared-memory sizes. Preprocess grid sizing uses tiles per block.
Per-call selection and workspace
flashinfer/mamba/cake_ssd_combined.py, tests/mamba/test_cake_ssd_combined.py, CLAUDE.md
The runner estimates family costs and selects a kernel based on device properties, workload size, workspace limits, and the FLASHINFER_CAKE_SSD_CHUNK_PARALLEL mode. Workspace setup stores the selected program and manages reusable chunk-parallel buffers. The environment-variable reference documents the supported modes.
Family-specific launch and validation
flashinfer/mamba/cake_ssd_combined.py, tests/mamba/test_cake_ssd_combined.py
The runner passes family-specific arguments and launch grids. Tests cover launch wiring and verify bitwise equality of outputs, final states, and checkpoints between the two families.

The auto-selected chunk-parallel path can hang when SM capacity is partitioned or occupied by concurrent work. Setting the override to never avoids that path; resolve the barrier/launch contract or explicitly accept this risk before merging.

TVM FFI cubin_launcher.h CubinKernel Launch cooperative launch implementation

💡 Result:

In TVM-FFI’s `cubin_launcher.h`, **`CubinKernel` does not itself implement a cooperative launch**. It forwards:

- `Launch(args, grid, block, stream, dyn_smem_bytes)` to `cuda_api::LaunchKernel(...)`.
- `LaunchEx(args, config)` to `cuda_api::LaunchKernelEx(...)`, using the extended launch API. ([tvm.apache.org](https://tvm.apache.org/ffi/reference/cpp/generated/program_listing_file_tvm_ffi_extra_cuda_cubin_launcher.h.html))

The header listing establishes those forwarding calls, but doesn’t show a cooperative-launch method or establish that either call requests cooperative execution. So `LaunchEx` shouldn’t be assumed to mean cooperative launch; the exact behavior depends on `LaunchConfig` and the `cuda_api` implementation. The available docs describe `LaunchEx` as enabling extended launch features such as cluster dimensions, not specifically cooperative launch. ([apache.googlesource.com](https://apache.googlesource.com/tvm-ffi/%2B/adac5ebd0ad695fc77bf5113c8127a7298c1ed52/include/tvm/ffi/extra/cuda/cubin_launcher.h?utm_source=openai))

This source is the documentation’s listing updated June 17, 2026; no specific commit or version was provided. **Unresolved:** whether another TVM-FFI version or the unified API has a cooperative-launch option. ([tvm.apache.org](https://tvm.apache.org/ffi/reference/cpp/generated/program_listing_file_tvm_ffi_extra_cuda_cubin_launcher.h.html))

Launch the chunk-parallel main kernel cooperatively.

sm_count is the total physical SM count. It does not account for unavailable SMs or the kernel's actual occupancy. The host currently uses an ordinary Launch, while every block waits for all num_bids blocks at grid_barrier. Under SM contention, resident blocks can wait for blocks that cannot become resident, causing a hang.

Use a cooperative launch with CU_LAUNCH_ATTRIBUTE_COOPERATIVE or cuLaunchCooperativeKernel. Also cap the grid with the exact kernel occupancy, such as cudaOccupancyMaxActiveBlocksPerMultiprocessor(...) * sm_count, and handle a launch that cannot be made resident.

Thanks — the occupancy half of this is already pinned by the kernel's resources; the co-residency guarantee is the real point, and here is where it stands.

Occupancy / grid cap. The chunk-parallel main kernel runs 512 threads with __launch_bounds__(512, 1), 231,936 B of dynamic shared memory and a full 512-column tcgen05.alloc, so SM100/SM103 fit exactly one CTA per SM and cudaOccupancyMaxActiveBlocksPerMultiprocessor(...) * sm_count == sm_count. The grid is min(num_segments * nheads, sm_count), which is that exact cap: a second CTA per SM is impossible by both SMEM and TMEM, so a per-call occupancy query would return the same bound.

Co-residency. Agreed that an ordinary launch does not make the driver guarantee that all num_bids CTAs are resident together. On an otherwise idle device they are (grid ≤ SM count, one CTA per SM). If other work holds SMs when this grid starts, the resident CTAs spin at grid_barrier until the foreign CTAs retire and the remaining CTAs dispatch — a stall rather than a hang, unless two grid-barrier kernels share the device and each waits for SMs the other holds. That single-stream contract is what the kernel was validated and measured under (compute-sanitizer synccheck/memcheck, the e2e suites and the SM100/SM103 performance rows in the description), and the description now states it explicitly.

Cooperative launch. The generated host stage comes from the Cake export front door, whose host emitter already supports the cooperative launch attribute (cudaLaunchAttributeCooperative, as carried by the cake_rmsnorm_train and cake_fused_norm_combine bindings in this repo). Enabling it for this family is a one-flag change on the kernel module's launch contract plus a regeneration, but it changes the launch path the performance rows were measured with (the short rows are host-launch-bound), so it needs the gates re-run rather than a drive-by edit of the generated file here. I am recording it as a follow-up to decide with the maintainers: regenerate this PR with the cooperative attribute and re-measure, or land it in the next revision under the documented single-stream contract.

@yyihuang Thanks for the clarification.

For the shipped SM100/SM103 kernel, the SMEM and TMEM requirements limit occupancy to one CTA per SM. The existing grid cap matches that limit. My request for a per-call occupancy query was unnecessary.

I also overstated the contention case. Independent foreign work that eventually retires causes a stall, not necessarily a deadlock. The remaining concern is concurrent grid-barrier kernels that can prevent each other from dispatching all CTAs. An ordinary launch does not provide the co-residency guarantee.

I agree that this change should go through the Cake export, followed by correctness and performance validation—not a manual edit of the generated host file. I’ll leave the finding open pending the maintainers’ decision on cooperative launch versus the documented single-stream contract.

Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for the export change and validation?

Learning: In flashinfer/mamba/cake_ssd_combined.py, the shipped Cake SSD chunk-parallel kernels on SM100/SM103 use 512 threads, 231,936 bytes of dynamic shared memory, and a full 512-column tcgen05.alloc. A per-call occupancy query is not needed for these fixed kernels. This occupancy limit does not itself guarantee grid-wide co-residency under an ordinary launch.

Learning: Cake SSD chunk-parallel host launch code is generated through the Cake export front door. Cooperative launch changes should be made in the kernel module launch contract and regenerated, rather than applied directly to generated host files. The emitter supports the cooperative launch attribute. Such a launch-path change requires correctness and performance validation again because short workloads can be host-launch-bound.

Not yet, thanks — the maintainers' choice between enabling the cooperative attribute in this PR (regenerate + re-validate) and keeping the documented single-stream contract for this revision is still pending. If they take the second route, I will open the follow-up issue with the export change and the validation plan (correctness on both architectures plus the performance rows, since the short calls are host-launch-bound).

@yyihuang Understood. I won’t open a follow-up issue. The finding remains open pending the maintainers’ decision.

One correction to my earlier note: the Cake host emitter carries the cooperative attribute in its extended-launch form, but the prepared-sequence host form used by this family currently refuses cooperative stages, so enabling it is an exporter extension plus regeneration rather than a flag flip. The validation plan is unchanged (correctness on both architectures plus the performance rows); the finding stays open pending the maintainers' decision.

@yyihuang Thanks for the correction. Enabling cooperative launch for this family requires extending the prepared-sequence exporter and regenerating the host code, not just changing a flag.

The validation plan remains correctness checks on SM100/SM103 and the performance rows, including host-launch-bound short calls. The finding remains open pending the maintainers’ decision.

The Cake host emitter supports the cooperative attribute in its extended-launch form, but the prepared-sequence host form currently refuses cooperative stages. …M100 / SM103)

The Cake segment preprocess now scans one (segment, head) tile per warp
(four tiles per 128-thread CTA); the loader's grid rule becomes
ceil(num_segments * nheads / tiles_per_block) with the value refreshed by
the Cake export next to the module identities.

…cess and exact scan (SM100 / SM103)

Round 3 of the Cake Mamba2 SSD combined prefill. The loader gains the
chunk-parallel program family (`chunkpar_{bf16,f16,f32}_{batched,varlen}`,
host template `host/mamba_ssd_combined_chunk_parallel_sequence.cpp`): a
three-phase persistent kernel with a grid barrier for long sequences with
few (segment, head) work items, selected per call by the calibrated host
cost rule mirrored from the Cake seed (`FLASHINFER_CAKE_SSD_CHUNK_PARALLEL`
= auto|always|never overrides), with a grow-only per-device workspace
(S f32 / H bf16 chunk states, u32 view, grid-barrier words). Both families
compute bitwise-identical outputs. The regenerated segment preprocess runs
one warp per (segment, head) tile with eight tiles per 256-thread block and
coalesced shared-memory-staged dt loads; the exact scan keeps the scaled-B
operand in place with a double-buffered state operand.

Tests: selection rule and quantities, workspace cap, mode override, main
argument order, unexported-program refusal, host template binding, GPU
bitwise equality of the chunk-parallel and exact-scan programs (batched,
varlen, cu_seqlens, checkpoints) and auto-selection on long prefill.

…process grid

The main launch of the regenerated hosts is a cuLaunchKernelEx config with
the programmatic-dependent-launch attribute, so the dynamic shared memory
literal appears as `dynamicSmemBytes = <bytes>u;` / `sharedMemBytes =
<bytes>u;` rather than a `Launch(..., stream, <bytes>u)` argument; the
sequence-argument test compares against the computed preprocess grid.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…t the dependent launch

Regenerated through the Cake export front door on the round-3 tree rebased onto current Cake
main: the preprocess and the twelve main programs are re-rendered (shared device-helper layout)
and the main kernel is launched as a plain back-to-back launch again. The programmatic dependent
launch exposed about 3 us of launch latency per call on every one-wave preprocess grid at the
FlashInfer level (the previous release's plain launch pays 0.3 us), while its overlap was worth
less than 0.5 us on multi-wave grids. Loader program table refilled; the host-text test pins the
plain launch form.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…plain launch form

The regenerated chunk-parallel host template launches the main kernel with
Launch(..., stream, CAKE_SSD_MAIN_SMEM_BYTESu) instead of the former
cuLaunchKernelEx path, so the template-text test asserts the plain launch
and the absence of the programmatic-stream-serialization attribute, matching
the exact-scan template test.

…rence

The static PR documentation check flagged the chunk-parallel selection
override of `SSDCombined(backend="cake")` as read in code
(`flashinfer/mamba/cake_ssd_combined.py`) but absent from the CLAUDE.md
environment variable reference. Add its row (`auto` / `always` / `never`,
read on every call, same exact-scan arithmetic in both families) to the
kernel-selection table. Documentation only; no code or generated file changes.

Use the selector’s actual work-item term.

chunk_parallel_selected compares num_segments * nheads with sm_count, so the documentation should say (segment, head) work items, not (sequence, head) work items.

CI note for pipeline #72243102 (finished 2026-10-08 19:52 UTC).

tests/mamba/test_cake_ssd_combined.py passed on every unit-test shard that executed it: B200 ×3, GB200 ×3 and GB300 ×3 (372 passed / 0 failed / 2 skipped each), plus VR200 / CUDA 13.4 (179 passed / 0 failed / 195 skipped). It does not appear in any failure list of the bot report.

The two entries the report marks as new relative to the nightly are in modules this PR does not touch:

  • tests/attention/test_cake_fmha.py (151 entries, GB300 / CUDA 13.0): as the report notes, these were not executed — that shard hit its time limit and the harness marks unexecuted nodes as failed.
  • tests/mla/test_cake_dsv4_hardening.py::test_cuda_graph_replay_matches_eager[h64-bf16-q4] (CUDA 12.9 on B200 / GB200 / GB300): the failing assertion is the torch.cuda.memory_allocated()-based "graph replay allocated" check, which fix(tests): count caching-allocator requests in the Cake DSv4 hardening no-allocation checks #6244 (merged 2026-10-08 19:50 UTC, after the CI merge for this pipeline was created on 2026-10-07) replaced with a caching-allocator request count.

Everything else in the report is in its pre-existing or infrastructure classes (multi-GPU job timeouts, RTX Pro 6000 runner failures, two interrupted GB200 shards; the two GB300 shard-2 jobs ended in a harness/filesystem error with 0 pytest failures recorded). Happy to trigger a fresh /bot run if a re-run is preferred.
