Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to f1d7d

The PR adds new Blackwell MXFP8 fused CUDA kernels, but the current version still has synchronization and memory-safety issues that may stall or mis-handle transfers or write beyond shared memory, along with build and lint readiness failures. These risks should be fixed before merging.

Bind the loop variables explicitly instead of assigning lambdas.

Ruff reports E731 and B023 here. The closures capture the loop variables by reference. The calls happen in the same iteration, so the current results are correct, but any future change that defers a call would silently benchmark the wrong configuration. Use functools.partial to bind the arguments at creation time.

Allow shapes outside the predefined list.

_parse_shape rejects any MxK pair that is not already in SHAPES, so --shape can only select a subset of the defaults. Validate the divisibility constraints instead, which is what the kernels require: m % 128 == 0 and k % 64 == 0.

Remove the stray #undef row_output_addr and record the generator source.

Elect one lane for TMA stores and bulk synchronization in both kernels.

In gated_act_mxfp8_bwd_both.cu and gated_act_mxfp8_fwd_both.cu, warp == 0 includes all 32 lanes, so every lane can issue the same TMA stores, commit group, and wait operation. Guard the stores, commit, and wait with elect_sync() or an equivalent single-lane election, as done in the rowwise and columnwise variants.

PTX mbarrier arrive.expect_tx ordering before cp.async.bulk.tensor complete_tx required

💡 Result:

In PTX, specifically when using asynchronous transaction barriers (mbarrier) to coordinate with Tensor Memory Accelerator (TMA) operations like cp.async.bulk.tensor, the ordering and usage pattern are strictly defined to ensure data integrity [1][2]. The mbarrier serves as a synchronization object that tracks two independent debts: arrival debt (threads) and transaction debt (bytes) [3]. A phase of the barrier is considered complete—and thus safe for consumers to read data—only when both debts are retired [1][2]. Required Ordering and Logic: 1. Expectation Setting (Producer): Before the TMA engine executes the transfer, the producer thread must register the anticipated transaction count (in bytes) on the mbarrier using mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx or mbarrier.expect_tx [4][5]. This action increments the barrier's transaction debt [1][3]. 2. TMA Execution (Producer): The cp.async.bulk.tensor instruction is then issued, configured with the mbarrier's address and the.mbarrier::complete_tx::bytes completion mechanism [6][7]. 3. Implicit Completion (Hardware): As the TMA engine completes the transfer, it automatically invokes an implicit mbarrier.complete_tx operation, which decrements the transaction debt [7][3]. 4. Wait (Consumer): The consumer thread performs a wait operation (e.g., mbarrier.try_wait or mbarrier.test_wait) on the mbarrier [2][8]. The hardware ensures the barrier phase will only advance once all threads have performed an arrive and the transaction debt has reached zero [1][2]. You do not need to manually call complete_tx before the cp.async.bulk.tensor instruction; rather, the instruction itself is designed to perform the completion signal as part of its execution path [7][3]. The critical requirement is that the mbarrier must be initialized and the byte count expected by the TMA transfer must be correctly registered on that barrier before or during the arrival process [2][5]. If the expectation is not set, or if the barrier is not properly associated with the bulk copy, the wait operation will not correctly reflect the state of the data in shared memory, potentially leading to race conditions [1][3].

site:docs.nvidia.com/cuda parallel-thread-execution mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx cp.async.bulk.tensor complete_tx ordering

💡 Result:

In NVIDIA GPU programming (compute capability 9.0+), asynchronous memory operations such as cp.async.bulk.tensor are synchronized using mbarrier objects that support transaction tracking [1][2]. The relationship between these instructions and the barrier mechanism involves explicitly accounting for data movement to ensure correct memory consistency and ordering [1]. 1. mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx: This instruction is used to signal arrival at a barrier while simultaneously updating the barrier's expected transaction count [2]. By incrementing this count, a thread informs the barrier that a specific number of bytes (transactions) are pending [1]. The barrier will not reach its completion state (i.e., flip) until all threads have arrived and all pending transactions have been reported as complete [1][2]. 2. cp.async.bulk.tensor: This instruction initiates an asynchronous bulk data copy [1]. Unlike older non-bulk copy instructions, it does not automatically update the associated mbarrier's transaction count [1]. Therefore, the developer must manually synchronize the barrier's expected count using mbarrier.expect_tx (or the arrival-equivalent) before or alongside the initiation of the copy [1]. 3. mbarrier.complete_tx: When the hardware completes a transaction (e.g., a bulk copy finishes moving the specified data), the transaction count associated with the mbarrier must be decremented to reflect that the work is finished [3][4]. The mbarrier.complete_tx instruction is used to perform this decrement [3][4]. Ordering and Synchronization: The barrier provides a mechanism to order memory visibility [1]. Threads waiting on the barrier (e.g., via mbarrier.try_wait) will be blocked until the barrier's arrival count is satisfied (all expected threads have signaled arrival) and the transaction count reaches zero (all expected data transactions have completed via mbarrier.complete_tx) [2]. This ensures that any data moved by cp.async.bulk.tensor into shared memory is fully written and safe for subsequent access by threads or other bulk operations [1].

"mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx" "cp.async.bulk.tensor" before

💡 Result:

When using the Tensor Memory Accelerator (TMA) in CUDA, the mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx instruction must be called before or in association with the cp.async.bulk.tensor operation to track the asynchronous data transfer [1][2][3]. The interaction follows this logical flow: 1. Initialization: The mbarrier is initialized with an expected arrival count [4][5]. 2. Expectation Setting: A producer thread calls mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx (or its equivalent in higher-level APIs) to specify the number of bytes that the upcoming TMA operation is expected to deliver [1][2][3]. This instruction performs a thread arrival at the barrier and increments the barrier's pending transaction byte count [6][2]. 3. Data Transfer: The cp.async.bulk.tensor instruction is issued, configured with the mbarrier::complete_tx::bytes completion mechanism [7][2][4]. As the TMA engine completes the transfer, it automatically decrements the barrier's pending transaction count by the number of bytes transferred [2][3]. 4. Synchronization: The barrier's phase only flips when both the arrival count and the pending transaction byte count have reached zero [1][3]. Consumers wait for this state using instructions like mbarrier.try_wait.parity [6][4][5]. While calling mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx before the TMA operation is the standard pattern, the critical requirement is that the producer thread accurately publishes the total byte count that the associated TMA operations will deliver to the barrier [1][2]. If multiple TMA operations are associated with the same barrier, the expected transaction count must reflect the sum of all bytes those operations will deliver [1][3].

Register the transaction count before issuing the TMA copies.

Thread 0 currently calls mbarrier_arrive_expect_tx after the elected lane issues three asynchronous TMA copies. The copies can complete before the transaction count is registered, so mbarrier_wait(input_full_addr, 0) cannot reliably establish that the shared-memory data is ready. Move the arrival block before the TMA calls and synchronize the CTA before issuing them.

CUDA PTX ISA mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx cp.async.bulk.tensor complete_tx ordering expected transaction count before TMA

💡 Result:

In CUDA PTX, the mbarrier mechanism is used to track both thread arrivals and asynchronous memory operations, such as those performed by the Tensor Memory Accelerator (TMA) using cp.async.bulk.tensor instructions [1][2]. 1. Transaction Counting and Ordering: An mbarrier object in shared memory tracks two primary types of debt: - Arrival debt: The number of threads yet to arrive at the barrier [2]. - Transaction debt: The number of asynchronous operations (e.g., bytes of data) yet to complete [2]. The expected transaction count must be published to the barrier before the asynchronous operation begins [3]. Using mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx (or mbarrier.expect_tx) provides the barrier with the total expected transaction byte count [2][4]. The TMA engine (cp.async.bulk.tensor) then performs its work, and upon completion, it implicitly or explicitly decrements the transaction debt [2]. The barrier will only transition to the next phase when all expected threads have arrived and the total transaction debt has been reduced to zero [1][3]. 2. Ordering Requirements: The mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx instruction serves as a release-semantic operation [4]. Crucially, the expectation of transactions must be registered before the TMA engine is triggered [3]. This ensures the hardware knows how many operations to track. 3. Key PTX Instructions: - mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx: A fused instruction that simultaneously contributes one arrival to the thread count and increments the transaction debt by a specified amount (typically in bytes) [2][4]. - cp.async.bulk.tensor: The TMA instruction that consumes the barrier. It is configured to use the barrier to track its own completion, typically signaled by the completion of the requested byte count (complete_tx::bytes) [5][6]. In practice, the thread responsible for initiating the TMA copy (e.g., the elected thread in a block) typically calls mbarrier.arrive.expect_tx to set the byte count [7][3]. Other threads in the block call mbarrier.arrive to contribute their arrival to the thread count without adding transaction debt [3]. All participating threads then wait on the barrier using mbarrier.try_wait (or similar) until the phase completes [1][3].

Arm input_full_addr before issuing the TMA loads.

Have the elect_sync() winner call mbarrier_arrive_expect_tx(input_full_addr, 8192) before both cp.async.bulk.tensor operations. Then have every thread call mbarrier_arrive(input_full_addr) once. Apply the same ordering to the staged prefetch block when enabled; the current stage + 1 < 1 condition disables that block.

minimum CUDA PTX ISA version for ld.global.v8.b32 256-bit load and mul.rn.f32x2 sm_100

💡 Result:

The instructions mul.rn.f32x2 and related packed FP32 operations are supported for compute capability sm_100 and later [1][2]. These instructions were introduced into the PTX ISA alongside support for this architecture [1][2]. Based on technical documentation and development tracking for NVPTX (the LLVM backend for NVIDIA GPUs), these packed FP32 features, including mul.rn.f32x2, require PTX ISA version 8.6 or higher [1]. Regarding ld.global.v8.b32, the syntax for vector loads of this type is a standard feature for loading 256-bit data (8 x 32-bit elements) from global memory. While vector load instructions like ld.global.v4 and ld.global.v2 have been supported for many generations, ld.global.v8.b32 is a specific configuration supported in PTX ISA versions consistent with recent high-performance architectures (typically PTX 7.x and later). Because these specific instructions (mul.rn.f32x2) and the target architecture (sm_100) are explicitly linked in the latest PTX specifications and toolchain updates, you should target PTX ISA 8.6 or newer to ensure compatibility [1][2]. In summary: - Minimum PTX ISA version: 8.6 [1] - Minimum compute capability: sm_100 [1][2]

💡 Result:

In the NVIDIA Parallel Thread Execution (PTX) ISA, mul.rn.f32x2 is not a standard, fundamental instruction format like some of the other packed floating-point instructions [1][2]. While PTX documentation explicitly categorizes .f32x2 as a packed floating-point type containing two .f32 elements [1][2], it specifies that .f16x2 is the only packed type supported as a fundamental type [1][2]. Other packed types, including .f32x2, are supported as instruction types for specific operations [1][2]. When using an instruction type such as .f32x2 where the format is not a fundamental type, the corresponding operand data variables must be declared as a bit type of the appropriate size [1][2]. For the .f32x2 type, which contains two 32-bit floating-point values, the register variable must be declared as .b64 [1][2]. Users should consult the specific instruction set references within the official PTX ISA documentation for their targeted architecture to verify if mul (or similar arithmetic operations) supports the .f32x2 type, as support for these types is context-dependent and varies by instruction [1][3].

💡 Result:

Based on the official PTX ISA documentation, the terms provided (max.NaN, xorsign, abs.bf16x2) do not correspond to standard or valid PTX instructions or modifiers. Regarding the components of your query: 1. max.NaN: There is no max.NaN instruction or modifier in the PTX ISA [1][2]. While the PTX ISA includes a max instruction for floating-point and integer types [1][2], it does not support a.NaN modifier. 2. xorsign: There is no xorsign instruction in the PTX ISA [3][4]. The ISA includes an xor instruction (for logical operations) and a copysign instruction (for floating-point operations) [2][4]. 3. abs.bf16x2: The abs instruction is supported in PTX for various types, such as.f32 and.f16 [1][2]. However,.bf16x2 is a packed data type format, not a fundamental type [5][6]. PTX supports packed floating-point data types (including.bf16x2) as instruction types for specific operations [5][6], but abs is not listed as an operation that supports the.bf16x2 instruction type [5][6]. When using instructions with packed types like.bf16x2, the operands must be declared as.b32 [5][6].

💡 Result:

The instruction cvt.rn.satfinite.e4m3x2.f32 is a PTX (Parallel Thread Execution) conversion instruction used to convert single-precision floating-point values (.f32) into a packed 8-bit floating-point format (.e4m3x2) [1][2]. Key components of this instruction include: cvt: The conversion instruction [1][3]..rn: Specifies the rounding mode, which is round-to-nearest-even [1]..satfinite: A saturation modifier that ensures values outside the representable range of the destination format are clamped to the maximum or minimum representable value, and that special values like NaN are handled according to the destination format's specification [1][4]..e4m3x2: The destination data type, representing two packed elements of the e4m3 floating-point format (4-bit exponent, 3-bit mantissa, 1-bit sign) [1][4][2]..f32: The source data type, which is single-precision floating-point [1]. In this specific conversion, the instruction takes input values in.f32 format and packs them into an e4m3 format [1][2]. Because e4m3 is a non-fundamental type in PTX, operands used with these instructions must be stored in registers declared with appropriate bit-size types (e.g.,.b16 for e4m3x2) [1][2]. The e4m3 format is designed for high-performance computing and AI workloads, specifically supporting reduced precision formats for efficiency [4][2].

site:docs.nvidia.com/cuda/parallel-thread-execution "ld.global" "evict_first" ".v8" "PTX ISA"

💡 Result:

The term evict_first is not a standard cache eviction modifier found in the official NVIDIA Parallel Thread Execution (PTX) ISA documentation. While the PTX ISA includes various instructions for data movement such as ld (load) and st (store) for global, local, and shared memory, the documentation does not list evict_first or evict_last as valid instruction modifiers for cache policy control [1][2][3]. The PTX ISA uses specific qualifiers for memory operations to manage access to state spaces like.global and.local [1][2]. If you are looking for ways to influence cache behavior in PTX, developers typically rely on memory space qualifiers or synchronization primitives, but there is no explicit instruction-level modifier for eviction order named evict_first [1][4][5].

NVIDIA CUDA 12.8 release notes Blackwell compute capability 10.0 sm_100 minimum nvcc toolkit

💡 Result:

NVIDIA CUDA Toolkit 12.8 introduces full support for the Blackwell GPU architecture, including compute capability 10.0 (sm_100) [1][2][3]. Key technical details regarding this support include: Compiler and Compute Capability: - The CUDA 12.8 Toolkit (and its updates) provides native compiler support for Blackwell architectures, specifically identifying sm_100, sm_101, and sm_120 [1][4]. - With CUDA 12.8, the nvcc compiler can generate native cubin files for Blackwell using compute capability 10.0 [5][6]. - Compilation for compute capabilities compute_100 and higher utilizes an updated NVVM IR dialect based on LLVM 18.1.8, which differs from the dialect used for pre-Blackwell architectures [2][4]. Usage with nvcc: - To target Blackwell architecture, developers should use the -gencode flag in nvcc. A recommended configuration includes specifying -gencode=arch=compute_100,code=sm_100 to target the hardware and -gencode=arch=compute_100,code=compute_100 to provide PTX for future forward compatibility [5][6]. Compatibility: - Applications are considered compatible with Blackwell if they are built to include either native cubin (compute capability 10.0) or PTX form, or both [5][6]. - While PTX generated for older architectures (e.g., 9.x) can be JIT-compiled for Blackwell, including native cubin is recommended to avoid runtime JIT compilation overhead [7][6]. Additional Features: - CUDA 12.8 extends the cuBLASLt API to support micro-scaled 4-bit and 8-bit floating-point mixed-precision tensor core-accelerated matrix multiplication specifically for compute capability 10.0 and higher [1][3].

NVIDIA CUDA 12.6 release notes Blackwell sm_100 compute_100a support

💡 Result:

NVIDIA CUDA 12.6 does not provide native support for the Blackwell architecture (compute capability 10.0 or sm_100) [1][2][3]. Official native support for Blackwell architecture, including the ability for nvcc to generate cubin files for compute capability 10.0, was introduced in CUDA Toolkit 12.8 [1][3]. While some open-source projects and developer tools may have included early identifiers or references to sm_100 during the CUDA 12.6 timeframe [4], these were preliminary and did not constitute supported, production-ready features for the Blackwell architecture. Full Blackwell compatibility and native toolchain support are documented as features of the CUDA 12.8 release [1][2].

NVIDIA PTX ISA 8.6 mul f32x2 max bf16x2 e4m3x2 evict_first

💡 Result:

The specific combination of terms you queried appears to mix different aspects of the NVIDIA Parallel Thread Execution (PTX) Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) that do not function as a single instruction. 1. mul f32x2 / bf16x2 / e4m3x2: These represent arithmetic operations on packed data types. PTX supports the mul instruction for various types, including packed formats like.f32x2,.bf16x2, and.e4m3x2, which operate on registers containing two packed values [1][2][3]. These are typically used for high-throughput arithmetic. 2. evict_first: This is not an arithmetic modifier; it is a cache memory hint qualifier. In PTX, qualifiers such as.L1::evict_first or.L2::evict_first are used with memory load/store instructions (e.g., ld, st) to control cache eviction policies [4][5][6]. They are not applicable to arithmetic instructions like mul. 3. PTX ISA 8.6: Documentation history indicates that PTX versions have evolved incrementally (e.g., 8.5, 8.7, 8.8) [7][8][9][1]. There is no official release of PTX ISA 8.6; major development and documentation have transitioned between versions such as 8.5 and 8.7 [8][9][10]. In summary, the terms provided refer to distinct components of the PTX ISA: arithmetic instructions (mul) with packed types, and memory cache control modifiers (evict_first). They cannot be combined into a single valid PTX instruction.

Add Parameters and Returns sections, and document the scale layout.

The public API doc check reports a missing Parameters section for both functions. Add the sections. …forward and backward (SM100 / SM103 / SM107) (#7305)

FlashInfer's fused SwiGLU + MXFP8 quantization kernel computes
silu(gate) * up from a BF16 input [M, 2K]. It quantizes the result to
MXFP8: E4M3 values with one E8M0 scale (RCEIL rounding) per 32 values,
and scales in the swizzled 128 x 4 layout. The kernel has one data type
(BF16 in, MXFP8 E4M3 + E8M0 out) and six forms. These are forward
(`flashinfer.silu_and_mul_mxfp8_quantize`, output [M, K]) and backward
(`flashinfer.silu_and_mul_mxfp8_quantize_backward`, gate and up
gradients [M, 2K] from grad_output [M, K]), each with rowwise, colwise
or both outputs. This PR delivers all six forms on sm_100a, sm_103a and
sm_107a through the Cake package
`flashinfer.cake_gated_act_mxfp8_backend`, which runs one program per
call, chosen by M * K. The public API is unchanged, and every output
byte is identical to the previous kernels' output. The baseline is the
previous Cake version, the gated_act_mxfp8 kernels FlashInfer ships on
main (added in #4638, SM107 enabled in #5392). Against that baseline,
the PR is 1.075-1.501x faster on B200 (forward 1.196-1.501x, backward
1.075-1.474x), 1.044-1.411x faster on GB300 (forward 1.169-1.411x,
backward 1.044-1.383x) and 1.094-1.697x faster on R200 (forward
1.331-1.697x, backward 1.094-1.427x). Every row of every table is
faster.

Latency is the mean CUPTI kernel time in microseconds, with a cold L2
before every launch. Both versions run in the same process on the same
GPU, in alternating paired runs, and speedup = FlashInfer latency / Cake
latency.

Cake has no other variants of this kernel; it ships on sm_100a (B200),
sm_103a (GB300) and sm_107a (R200) only, with no family fallback to
other architectures.
