Owner product ruling: the brand is lossless. Durable storage is never mutated by default; cloud-outbound privacy protects provider-bound copies only, on by default for cloud providers, explicitly opt-out-able (LCM_EMBEDDING_PRIVACY_ENABLED=false → revision privacy:off, clean re-embed on toggle).

Before this PR, configuring a cloud embedding provider force-enabled sensitive_patterns_enabled, which also scrubbed the durable store — every cloud user silently lost losslessness. Now the two are independent flags; durable scrubbing stays opt-in forever.

Rides v0.23.2-rc1 so the release gauntlet measures the real semantics (Phase-A cloud posture = lossless durable + protected embedding copies).

Review trail: codex-authored per SPEC-LOSSLESS-SPLIT, Claude line-review + independent semantic probe (durable-raw/protected-copy/opt-out-revision all verified). Two-lane receipts to follow.

…ing privacy

Owner product ruling (2026-08-26): the brand is LOSSLESS. The durable
store is never mutated unless the operator explicitly opts in — but the
v0.23.1 design forced sensitive_patterns_enabled=True for any cloud
embedding provider, and that one flag also drives durable redaction, so
every cloud user silently lost losslessness.

Split:
- sensitive_patterns_enabled (default False, opt-in forever) now
controls ONLY durable redaction at ingest.
- NEW embedding_privacy_enabled (LCM_EMBEDDING_PRIVACY_ENABLED;
default None = auto-ON for providers the privacy predicate marks as
cloud) controls ONLY provider-bound copies: protect_embedding_text,
dispatch validation, and the recall/grep/proactive query transform.
- Explicit opt-out (False): raw text flows to the provider by the
operator's choice — no policy errors anywhere — and the vector
identity binds revision 'privacy:off', so toggling re-embeds cleanly.
- The transform uses the configured pattern catalog independently of
the durable flag; unknown-pattern/empty-catalog still raise when ON.
- Harness follows: cloud benchmark runs now measure the lossless corpus
(raw durable + protected embedding copies) — the flagship default.
- Docs: config reference + the lossless guarantee statement.

270 privacy/recall/harness tests green; every caller of the old
sensitive_patterns-based cloud gate audited (remaining reads are
durable/diagnostic only). Implemented by codex per SPEC-LOSSLESS-SPLIT;
brand semantics verified by an independent probe.

📝 Walkthrough

Priority Level: P2

Findings

P2 — Validate the complete provider payload surface

  • What is wrong: The change protects embedding, recall, proactive-query, and rerank payloads, but the summary does not prove that every cloud-provider request path uses the same privacy policy.
  • Why it matters: An uncovered provider-bound path can send raw durable text to a cloud provider. This would violate the stated privacy guarantee.
  • Location: Provider dispatch paths and callers of protect_embedding_text / validate_embedding_privacy_dispatch.
  • Recommended fix: Audit all cloud-provider payload construction paths. Apply the same privacy transformation and revision validation to each path. Add regression tests that capture provider inputs for every supported operation.
  • Required before merge: Yes.
  • Confidence: 78%

P3 — Test explicit privacy-off behavior across all operations

  • What is wrong: The tests cover privacy opt-out for queries and rerank payloads, but the summary does not confirm equivalent coverage for embedding, proactive queries, backfills, and recall payloads.
  • Why it matters: A partial opt-out implementation can produce inconsistent vector identities or fail when privacy:off is bound during warmup.
  • Location: tests/test_embedding_privacy.py, tests/test_lcm_recall.py, and related backfill/proactive-query tests.
  • Recommended fix: Add end-to-end tests for each provider-bound operation with LCM_EMBEDDING_PRIVACY_ENABLED=false. Assert raw payloads, privacy:off identity binding, and successful dispatch.
  • Required before merge: Yes.
  • Confidence: 70%

P4/NIT — Add a configuration migration note

  • What is wrong: The new setting changes the default behavior for cloud-provider payloads, but the summary does not identify an upgrade or migration warning for operators.
  • Why it matters: Operators may not know that cloud payloads are now protected by default or that false sends raw text.
  • Location: Configuration and release documentation.
  • Recommended fix: Add a concise migration note that documents the new default, the raw-text opt-out, and the privacy:off identity behavior.
  • Required before merge: No. Optional.
  • Confidence: 62%

Walkthrough

Cloud embedding privacy is now independent from durable sensitive-pattern redaction. Known cloud providers protect provider-bound copies by default. LCM_EMBEDDING_PRIVACY_ENABLED=false sends raw input under privacy:off. Durable storage remains lossless by default. Confidence: 97%.

Documents separate durable and provider-bound controls, automatic cloud protection, unchanged local-provider behavior, raw-cloud opt-out, policy binding, and backfill requirements.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to c9215

The change separates durable redaction from privacy applied to cloud-bound copies, but some documentation is inconsistent and invalid privacy catalogs can be reported as active even though cloud retrieval fails, making the outage harder to diagnose. This is a bounded low-risk issue that is mergeable with explicit owner follow-up.

Maintainer Analysis

Changed behavior:

  • Durable sensitive-pattern redaction remains opt-in, while known cloud embedding providers now protect provider-bound copies automatically.
  • LCM_EMBEDDING_PRIVACY_ENABLED=false explicitly permits raw cloud embedding input under the distinct privacy:off vector revision.
  • Local embedding providers continue receiving unchanged input.
  • The benchmark harness now preserves raw durable corpus and FTS content while applying privacy only to cloud-bound embedding copies.

Affected invariants:

  • Durable messages, FTS rows, summaries, and payloads remain lossless unless durable redaction is explicitly enabled.
  • Cloud privacy posture is bound to vector identity so protected and privacy:off vectors are not silently mixed.
  • Provider-bound privacy transformations do not mutate durable stored content.
  • Local-provider embedding input remains byte-identical.

Evidence:

  • config.py adds the independent optional embedding_privacy_enabled setting and environment mapping.
  • ingest_protection.py separates privacy revision and dispatch behavior from sensitive_patterns_enabled and distinguishes privacy:off.
  • tests/test_embedding_privacy.py covers raw durable storage, protected cloud copies, explicit opt-out, identity separation, and unchanged local-provider input.
  • tests/test_lcm_recall.py covers protected cloud queries with durable redaction disabled and raw queries under explicit opt-out.
  • tests/test_longmemeval_harness.py verifies that cloud embedding operation leaves the FTS corpus raw.

Limitations:

  • Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff and context.
  • No tests, builds, package scripts, app commands, shell commands, or arbitrary PR code were executed.
  • Remote CI state and behavior outside the shown source context were not independently verified.

No-finding rationale: The diff consistently separates durable redaction from provider-copy privacy, fail-closes automatic cloud privacy when the configured catalog is invalid, uses a distinct identity for explicit opt-out, and adds focused tests for the highest-risk storage, dispatch, recall, and vector-identity paths. No concrete correctness, security, data-loss, CI, release, or high-signal test defect was validated from the permitted evidence.

…lags

Review findings: two stale lines still described the pre-split coupling
(cloud requires sensitive patterns; disabled policy blocks dispatch).
Both now state the real semantics: embedding privacy on-by-default for
cloud with the privacy:off opt-out, durable redaction separate and
opt-in, lossless durable store by default.

Maintainer Analysis

Changed behavior:

  • Cloud embedding privacy is decoupled from durable sensitive-pattern redaction and automatically enabled for recognized cloud providers.
  • An explicit LCM_EMBEDDING_PRIVACY_ENABLED=false setting sends raw provider input under the distinct privacy:off vector identity.
  • Durable messages and FTS content remain raw by default while provider-bound cloud copies are transformed.
  • Benchmark configuration now exercises lossless durable storage with automatic provider-copy privacy.

Affected invariants:

  • Cloud privacy posture remains bound to vector identity, preventing protected and raw vectors from sharing an identity.
  • Recognized cloud providers still fail closed for invalid active privacy catalogs unless privacy is explicitly disabled.
  • Local embedding-provider document input remains unchanged.
  • Durable redaction remains an explicit, irreversible opt-in.

Evidence:

  • config.py adds the nullable embedding_privacy_enabled configuration and environment mapping.
  • ingest_protection.py assigns privacy:off to explicit opt-out and bypasses transformation only for that revision.
  • tests/test_embedding_privacy.py covers default cloud protection, raw opt-out, identity separation, durable raw storage, and local-provider pass-through.
  • tests/test_lcm_recall.py covers protected cloud queries with durable redaction disabled and explicit raw-query opt-out.
  • tests/test_longmemeval_harness.py verifies cloud embedding operation leaves the FTS corpus raw.

Limitations:

  • Review was limited to the supplied diff; no shell commands, tests, builds, package scripts, or PR code were executed.
  • Unchanged call sites and runtime behavior outside the shown context were not independently inspected.

No-finding rationale: The changed implementation and focused tests consistently bind protected and explicit-raw cloud postures to different revisions, preserve durable losslessness by default, and retain fail-closed catalog validation for the protected posture. No concrete right-side defect or missing gate-critical regression test was validated from the supplied diff.

…resolution

The lossless split escalated #371 from marginal to a default-path leak:
rerank snippets now come from the RAW durable store, so data protected
on the embedding path disclosed via the rerank request. _lcm_recall_rerank
now protects the query and every hit snippet with the provider-copy
transform when the embedding-privacy resolution is ON (ranking indices
map back to the original hits — only what leaves the machine is
transformed); the explicit opt-out keeps raw payloads by choice, and
transient rerank failures keep the skip-to-RRF contract. Policy errors
propagate per #370 semantics. 189 tests green.

Implemented by codex per SPEC-RERANK-PRIVACY; verified by my own run.
…d payloads

The product now protects rerank payloads under the embedding-privacy
resolution, so production parity flips direction: rerank_sessions_voyage
protects the query and each session-summary document with the
provider-copy transform when the caller supplies the active privacy
context (evaluate_question passes its config + summary revision);
ordering still applies to the original sessions. 272 tests green.

1407-1431: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

sensitive_pattern_status reports a healthy active posture for a policy that cannot dispatch. Confidence: 88%.

Root cause: privacy_enabled is derived only from the provider requirement and the explicit opt-out. It ignores configured, active, and unknown, which are already computed on line 1408.

Code path: cloud provider, embedding_privacy_enabled=None (the new default), and LCM_SENSITIVE_PATTERNS set to an empty list or to a name outside _SENSITIVE_PATTERN_CATALOG.

  • sensitive_pattern_status returns embedding_privacy_enabled: True and embedding_privacy_revision: "active".
  • embedding_privacy_revision(config) on line 1485 or line 1489 raises EmbeddingPrivacyPolicyError for the same config, so every embed, recall, grep, warmup, and rerank dispatch fails.

Impact: the failure is loud, so no secret ships. The cost is diagnosis. /lcm doctor and lcm_status assert an active privacy posture while the whole cloud retrieval path is dead. Attribute the outage to the wrong control.

Fix: report the unresolvable state in the same field the caller reads.

100yenadmin dismissed coderabbitai[bot]’s stale review August 26, 2026 13:26

All findings dispositioned: code gates fully passed across three deep review rounds; the harness-rerank escape and three doc minors fixed with regressions; 4 threads terminally resolved; receipt-validated gate PASS at the exact head. Dismissing the stale request-changes state to reflect that record.

Merge receipt (admin path, standing pre-stable grant). Composite barrier satisfied at exact head: receipt-validated gate PASS (acceptance 97 / adversarial 99, digests bound); full CI green; three deep review rounds (final PASS 99/0) + brand-semantics probe; #346 amendment of record implemented; #371 closes with this merge (rerank protected in product AND harness). Lossless is now the shipped default: durable store untouched unless opted in; provider-bound copies protected for cloud with the explicit privacy:off opt-out. Only unmet ruleset condition = the solo-repo approval count (#369 FIX3).
