📝 WalkthroughPriority Level: P4/NIT Confidence: 85% The implementation adds exception-safe accounting for regular and interactive queries, contextual cache identity, bounded contextual flushing, transport observation, and retry-preserving dispatch behavior. Focused tests cover cache reuse, ordering, privacy namespaces, batch limits, failures, retries, and usage accounting. Reported validation passed: 167 tests passed, 11 skipped, plus Ruff, No P0–P3 correctness, security, reliability, or regression findings identified. Optional: Add an integration test that replays a complete contextual benchmark run and asserts zero document transports. This would directly verify the stated end-to-end cache guarantee. Not required before merge. Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The benchmark harness can report incorrect provider transport totals by missing retry attempts or discarding earlier completed dispatches after a later failure, which can make cache and usage accounting results inaccurate. Merge should wait for these counting issues to be fixed and covered by regression tests. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

Clear usage before yielding contextual cache hits
When this cache instance has previously populated a miss, last_usage_tokens retains that provider call's value. A later cache-only call yields these batches without clearing it, so _AccountingProvider.embed_chunk_group_batches adds the stale token count for every cached batch even though its final dispatch delta is zero; repeated content therefore inflates the benchmark's provider-spend accounting. Reset usage for cache hits or attach usage only to batches that actually dispatched.

Preserve the first contextual vector under concurrent writes
When two benchmark shards miss the same contextual group concurrently, both can call the provider and this INSERT OR REPLACE lets the later writer overwrite the earlier committed vectors while each shard still consumes its own result. If provider outputs differ at all, shard results and the durable replay cache become scheduling-dependent; the flat cache already avoids this by using INSERT OR IGNORE and rereading the winner, and the contextual path needs the same behavior.

Mark post-dispatch contextual failures as incomplete
When a contextual provider starts one or more transports and then raises before yielding its first batch, the except block sets usage_complete while local_dispatches is still zero; this finally block subsequently discovers the real positive dispatch delta but never recomputes completeness. The accounting snapshot therefore reports complete zero-token usage for a failed billable attempt instead of usage_tokens: null, corrupting failure-path spend evidence.

Observe transports before provider warmup
For a live provider whose dimension is initially unknown, resolve_harness_provider runs _accounted_provider_attempt for the warmup before either wrapper constructor reaches this observer installation. If Voyage receives retryable 429 responses during that warmup, _accounted_provider_attempt has no transport counter and records exactly one dispatch regardless of the actual attempt count, so the supposedly complete accounting omits warmup retries. Install transport observation before warmup and use the observed counter in _accounted_provider_attempt.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Contextual embedding results are now cached by ordered group content, provider/model identity, dimension, and privacy namespace.
- Provider transport attempts are observed without passing the callback that changes the provider retry contract.
- Interactive query embedding is forwarded and accounted through both accounting and cache wrappers.
- Contextual chunks are streamed in bounded groups rather than retained for the entire question.
Affected invariants:
- Every accepted provider transport attempt must be counted, including failed attempts.
- Cache hits must not report provider usage or dispatches from earlier calls.
- Contextual cache keys must preserve group order and privacy separation.
Evidence:
- benchmarking/longmemeval.py:864 leaves prior
last_usage_tokensintact before cached batches are consumed. - benchmarking/longmemeval.py:910-918 resets only explicitly predispatch errors and has no fallback for an unobservable postdispatch failure.
- Added tests cover retry counters and successful cache reuse, but not token accounting on reuse or an unobservable failure before the first yielded batch.
Limitations:
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; no commands, tests, builds, or project code were executed.
No-finding rationale: No additional correctness, security, losslessness, CI, or compatibility defect was validated directly from the changed lines.

P2: Cache hits reuse stale token usage
The cache-hit path yields cached batches without clearing last_usage_tokens. After any earlier cache miss, _AccountingProvider.consume() reads that stale value while consuming a later full or partial cache hit and attributes old provider tokens to a request that performed no transport. Reset usage to zero/None before yielding cached batches, and add a miss-then-hit accounting regression that asserts zero new usage and dispatches on the hit.
Category: Runtime correctness
Why this matters: This makes the benchmark's contextual-cache token totals incorrect and can erase the reported cost benefit of cache reuse.

P2: Failed contextual transports can be counted as zero
If a contextual provider has neither a readable dispatch counter nor an instrumentable _transport and raises after dispatch but before yielding its first batch, dispatches remains zero. The finally block consequently adds zero, and an outer _AccountingProvider also trusts that unchanged cache counter. For non-predispatch failures without an observed counter delta, conservatively record at least one attempt, as the other embedding paths do; cover a postdispatch-before-first-yield provider in tests.
Category: Runtime correctness
Why this matters: Provider failures would be omitted from the benchmark's completed transport accounting, which is the behavior this PR is intended to make complete.

Maintainer Analysis
Changed behavior:
- Provider transports are wrapped to count actual attempts without selecting the provider's callback retry contract.
- Document, contextual-group, and interactive-query calls now derive dispatch counts from provider or observed-transport counters.
- Contextual embeddings are cached using provider, model, dimension, privacy namespace, ordered group text, and position.
- Contextual chunk groups are flushed in bounded batches during question evaluation.
Affected invariants:
- Every real provider transport must be reflected in dispatch accounting.
- Usage is complete only when usage for every completed dispatch is known.
- Contextual cache identity must preserve ordered input context and privacy separation.
Evidence:
- benchmarking/longmemeval.py:350-365 exception/final accounting for document embedding
- benchmarking/longmemeval.py:418-440 immediate contextual-call exception accounting
- benchmarking/longmemeval.py:701-728 cache partial-batch dispatch handling
- tests/test_longmemeval_embed_cache.py partial-refusal tests assert dispatch count but not usage completeness
- tests/test_longmemeval_harness.py contextual postdispatch test exercises deferred generator failure, not eager call failure
Limitations:
- No tests, builds, scripts, shell commands, or arbitrary PR code were executed, per review constraints.
- Review was limited to the supplied checkout diff; live CI, exact provider implementations, and runtime behavior were not independently exercised.
No-finding rationale: No additional defect was validated from the supplied diff. The new contextual cache key includes the material provider-input identity, and indexed result assembly avoids treating reordered cached batches as output-order corruption.

P2: Synchronous contextual failures bypass transport accounting
If embed_chunk_group_batches() eagerly performs a transport and raises before returning an iterable, this branch records local_dispatches == 0 without consulting the transport counter captured in before_calls. Such a provider is valid for this interface—the successful path accepts any iterable—but the failed request is reported as zero dispatches with complete usage. Recompute the before/after counter delta in this exception path and add a regression using a non-generator provider that calls _transport() and then raises.
Category: Runtime correctness
Why this matters: The benchmark can under-report failed provider requests and their unknown token usage, contradicting the PR's complete transport-accounting goal.

There was a problem hiding this comment.
P2: Later predispatch refusal can falsely mark cached usage complete
When _AccountingProvider wraps ContentHashEmbeddingCache, the cache's synchronous document path can consume one provider batch and then receive a transport_started=False refusal for the next attempt. The cache preserves the completed dispatch count in its finally block but raises before returning its accumulated usage. This predispatch branch therefore observes a positive dispatch delta while leaving usage_complete=True and known_usage=0, falsely recording zero complete usage for the completed request. Preserve partial usage through the cache failure or mark usage incomplete when this wrapper sees completed dispatches without observed usage; extend the new partial-refusal cache test to assert usage accounting.
Category: Runtime correctness
Why this matters: Benchmark cost reports can claim complete token accounting while silently omitting usage from a successfully dispatched batch.

Changed behavior:
- Provider transport attempts are observed without selecting callback-based retry behavior.
- Contextual document embeddings are cached using group/order/privacy-sensitive digests.
- Contextual chunk groups are flushed in bounded batches during evaluation.
- Interactive query embedding now follows the same accounting path as ordinary queries.
Affected invariants:
- Accounting must not alter provider retry behavior or mask provider failures.
- Contextual cache entries must remain bound to provider, model, privacy namespace, group content, and order.
- Chunk vectors must retain their original chunk identity when contextual batches are flushed.
Evidence:
- benchmarking/longmemeval.py:802 introduces the shared cached-query execution path.
- benchmarking/longmemeval.py:821 consumes a conditionally assigned local from a

P3: Query cleanup can mask cancellation exceptions
return_dispatches is assigned only after success, inside except Exception, or when observable counters exist. If an unobservable provider raises KeyboardInterrupt, SystemExit, or another direct BaseException, the exception bypasses the handler and this line raises UnboundLocalError from finally, masking the original cancellation. Initialize the fallback before entering try, or otherwise ensure cleanup preserves direct BaseException failures.
Category: Runtime correctness
Why this matters: Benchmark interruption and process-exit signals can be replaced by an unrelated accounting traceback, obscuring the actual termination reason.

Closing this bench-only PR. The v1m-rebank train (#413) has since reworked benchmarking/longmemeval.py, so the branch conflicts with main, and it has no runtime effect on v0.24.1. #353 stays as the tracker. If contextual cache accounting is still needed for a benchmark run, please refile against current main. |
