It's very likely that the failure is related to the changes from dotnet/sdk#54515.

Investigated — you were right that dotnet/sdk#54515 is the trigger. Fixed in 5f5df66.

Root cause

crossgen2_publish.csproj sets AotOrSingleFile=true, which becomes PublishAot=true via eng/toolAot.targets when UseNativeAotForComponents is true (Linux x64 native-AOT-capable legs). With sdk#54515, PublishAot publish now runs _PublishOptimizedBuildAlternative (BuildOnlySettings;PrepareForBuild;PrepareResources;Compile;CreateSatelliteAssemblies) instead of the full Build. Since crossgen2_publish.csproj has DefaultTargets="Publish;PublishItemsOutputGroup", Build never runs at all, so crossgen2.deps.json and crossgen2.runtimeconfig.json are no longer generated in artifacts/bin/crossgen2_publish/x64/Release/.

Microsoft.NETCore.App.Crossgen2.sfxproj doesn't consume those files directly — it collects the publish output via OutputItemType="_RawCrossgenPublishFiles". The failure comes from MSBuild's implicit transitive content copy: GetCopyToOutputDirectoryItems recurses into the referenced project, the SDK's AddDepsJsonAndRuntimeConfigToBuildOutputs adds $(ProjectDepsFilePath)/$(ProjectRuntimeConfigFilePath) to AllItemsFullPathWithTargetPath with CopyToOutputDirectory=PreserveNewest, and the sfxproj then tries to copy them into its own output dir in _CopyOutOfDateSourceItemsToOutputDirectory (Microsoft.Common.CurrentVersion.targets(5490,5) — matches the inner error location). That's why only the CurrentSourceBuiltSdk leg failed: the MsftSdk leg still uses the previously-released SDK.

Fix

Added Private="false" to that ProjectReference. _GetCopyToOutputDirectoryItemsFromTransitiveProjectReferences is gated on '%(_MSBuildProjectReferenceExistent.Private)' != 'false', so this stops the unwanted copy of the referenced project's build outputs into the sfxproj output directory, while OutputItemType outputs are unaffected (that <Output> in ResolveProjectReferences is only conditioned on OutputItemType, not Private).

Verified with a standalone repro (child project with DefaultTargets="Publish;PublishItemsOutputGroup", parent referencing it the same way):

• Private=true: _TransitiveItemsToCopyToOutputDirectory contains child.deps.json and child.runtimeconfig.json from bin/.
• Private=false: that list is empty, and the OutputItemType items are identical in both cases.

Note this file is also imported by Microsoft.NETCore.App.Crossgen2.Host.sfxproj (referencing crossgen2_inbuild.csproj), which is likewise publish-only, so suppressing the transitive copy there is correct too.
