feat(jobs): backfill() — a factory over job(), not a ninth primitive - #74
Conversation
- new packages/jobs/src/backfill.ts: backfill({ name, source, batch, handle })
returns a JobHandle, so a table sweep inherits .enqueue(), the retry policy,
the worker's cancellation, the dead-letter path and its manifest row
- the pass iterates entity's inBatches() — one statement per page, keyset —
with every page inside its own step.run named batch:<index>, so a killed
attempt resumes on the page it stopped at and re-reads none before it
- a step persists the CURSOR and a row count, never the page: steps.ts retains
a completed step's output for the whole run
- the iteration is rebuilt whenever it disagrees with the checkpoints, because
retryFromStep re-opens one step in the middle of a finished run
- a checkpoint read back is checked, not trusted — step.run replays it through
an unchecked cast and an absent cursor would restart the pass at the top
- batch size refused at declaration; idempotencyKey is the backfill's name
10 tests, 8 mutations verified red. verify 13/17 (4 honest skips),
reference-app gate 10/17 (7 pinned) — both baselines unchanged.

- new `backfill-ledger.ts`: `BackfillLedger`, the definition checksum, the
pure `decideBackfill` verdict and a memory implementation
- `x_backfills` ships in `SQL_JOBS_TABLE` and hangs off `JobDriver.backfills`,
optional like `introspect` — a driver without one runs backfills unrecorded
- a completed name re-enqueued is a no-op with a report; `{ force: true }`
sweeps again into a NEW row; a moved checksum warns and still does not run
- the row is a report, never a resume source — the step checkpoints stay the
only answer to "where were we"
- `backfill.ts` split: the declaration stays, the pass moves to
`backfill-pass.ts`, same shape as `job.ts` / `execute.ts`
- `appVersion()` lands in `@ultimat3/core`; `db`'s `runningAppVersion`
delegates, so `x_migrations` and `x_backfills` cannot name one build twice

- `rate` (batches/sec, default 5) paces every pass. The wait is spent INSIDE each batch's `step.run`, so a resumed attempt replaying 500 checkpoints re-pays none of their pauses, and it unwinds on the run's cancellation (`X_ABORTED`) instead of sitting in a timer. No unthrottled mode: to sweep faster raise the number. Not part of the definition checksum — pacing is tuning, like `batch`. - `inspectBackfills()` is the ONE projection of the `x_backfills` ledger, read by four surfaces so none can disagree: `x db backfill --list` (`--name`, `--status`, `--limit`, `--json`), `x jobs ls` (the passes in flight, rows and cursor), `x jobs show <id>` (this run's row, under `backfill`), and `/_x`'s jobs panel (the whole ledger plus a live count). It reads no clock and answers `[]` — never a throw — for a driver with no ledger. - `x db backfill` without `--list` is refused naming the command that works: `x db backfill <name>` will one day RUN a pass. - `withJobDriver` (`jobs-driver.ts`) is now the one place a CLI command gets hold of the queue; `x jobs` and `x db backfill` share it. - Fixes `SQL_BACKFILL_LIST`: the new run-id predicate needs `$3::uuid`, since `uuid = text` has no operator and would have failed every call, filtered or not. Caught against a real database, pinned in `driver-pg.test.ts`. Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
- `x g backfill <name>` scaffolds a backfill declaration with a passing test - backfill is a factory over job(), inheriting .enqueue(), retry, and manifest row - template provides a skeleton with the source and handle functions, requiring the user to fill in the database query - fixture test updated to include backfill in the scaffold coverage Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>

Estimated code review effort: 5 (Critical) | ~120 minutes Merge Risk: 🔴 Critical · up to This PR adds resumable table backfills and new CLI/admin surfaces, but the current head is not merge-ready: an added test file contains a syntax error, generated backfills can report successful progress without mutating rows, and retries can show an incorrect completion time while running. Inline comments:
In `@CHANGELOG.md`:
- Line 100: Document in CHANGELOG.md and CLAUDE.md that definition.handle
executes before cursor persistence, so a crash or cancellation may rerun the
same page; require handlers to be idempotent or transaction-safe. Add a
regression test covering this at-least-once boundary, including a side effect
followed by interruption and replay of the page.
In `@docs/architecture/08-jobs-internals.md`:
- Line 75: Update the documented JobDriver interface sample to include optional
introspect and backfills members alongside the six required methods, and add the
memory driver to the driver table. Keep the documentation consistent with the
stated contract that drivers may omit these optional capabilities.
In `@packages/admin/src/dev/data.test.ts`:
- Line 172: Replace the bare Error throw in the ledger validation with an
assertion that ledger is defined, followed by an early return when it is absent
so TypeScript narrows the value while preserving the failing-test behavior.
- Around line 201-203: Remove the duplicated trailing .catch() expression after
the cast in the defaultDevSources().backfills() test setup, leaving one valid
caught-error assignment for caught so the TypeScript parses correctly.
In `@packages/admin/src/dev/panel-jobs.test.ts`:
- Line 1: Add a 1–4 line header comment before the imports in the test file
explaining why the jobs panel tests exist, focusing on their purpose rather than
describing the file’s contents.
In `@packages/cli/src/db-backfill.test.ts`:
- Around line 83-100: Update the test around the seed calls and listBackfills to
use an injected or controlled clock, advancing it between seeding run_1 and
run_2 so their startedAt values differ deterministically. Preserve the existing
newest-first assertions and row expectations.
In `@packages/cli/src/db-backfill.ts`:
- Around line 13-17: Move the canonical backfill status values into
`@ultimat3/jobs` by exporting a runtime status list or validator alongside
BackfillStatus, then update isBackfillStatus in db-backfill.ts and its tests to
consume that shared export instead of defining BACKFILL_STATUSES locally. Keep
the existing parsing behavior while ensuring newly added job statuses are
accepted consistently.
In `@packages/cli/src/jobs-driver.test.ts`:
- Line 5: Update the node:path import used by jobs-driver tests: replace join
with an appropriate Bun or Web API where feasible; otherwise retain the node:
import and add a concise comment explaining why this Node-specific API is
unavoidable.
In `@packages/cli/src/templates/backfill.ts`:
- Line 27: Update backfillSource so generated TypeScript contains a complete
executable backfill implementation or a contract-compliant UltimateError
subclass instead of throw new Error. Ensure any generated error has a stable X_*
code, preserves the cause, and provides a runnable fix: action, while keeping
the generated source valid.
- Around line 29-35: Update the generated BackfillBatch handle in the backfill
template so every non-empty batch either writes rows through the required
mutation path or throws an explicit contract-compliant not-implemented error;
remove the void rows placeholder. Extend the generated test to execute a
non-empty batch and assert the mutation occurs or the expected error is thrown,
ensuring no successful no-op handler is emitted.
- Around line 43-46: Update the generated test source returned by backfillTest
to begin with a 1–4 line header comment stating the file’s single responsibility
and why the backfill test exists, before the import statements.
In `@packages/core/src/app-version.test.ts`:
- Around line 1-2: Add a concise 1–4 line header comment before the imports in
the app-version test file stating that its single responsibility is testing
app-version constants and behavior.
In `@packages/jobs/src/backfill-inspect.ts`:
- Around line 51-59: Update inspectBackfills to use the exported BackfillFilter
type for its filter parameter instead of an inline object literal, importing it
from backfill-ledger as needed; keep BackfillStatus imported separately for
BackfillProgress.status.
In `@packages/jobs/src/backfill-rate.ts`:
- Around line 68-96: Validate options.rate at the start of createPacer,
requiring it to be finite and greater than zero before calculating intervalMs;
reject zero, negative, and infinite values while preserving backfill()'s
existing declaration-site validation message.
In `@packages/jobs/src/driver-pg-sql.ts`:
- Around line 188-198: Update SQL_BACKFILL_START so its ON CONFLICT DO UPDATE
clause sets completed_at to NULL when reopening an existing run, while
preserving status, started_at, app_version, checksum, and progress columns.
Extend the SQL_BACKFILL_START documentation to note that completed_at is reset
when a failed run is reopened.
In `@packages/jobs/src/driver-pg.test.ts`:
- Around line 188-191: Correct the explanatory comment above the
SQL_BACKFILL_LIST assertion to refer to the $3::uuid cast, not a ::text cast,
and preserve the existing assertion and its rationale about the uuid comparison.

…plate - `SQL_BACKFILL_START` / the memory ledger clear `completed_at` when a retry adopts its row: `finish` stamps it for `failed` too, so a running pass rendered with a completion time in the past on all four surfaces - `BACKFILL_STATUSES` + `isBackfillStatus` declared once in `@ultimat3/jobs`, `BackfillStatus` derived from the list; the CLI's copy is gone - `createPacer` asserts its own rate: `0` makes the interval Infinity, which the timer clamps to ~1ms — an unvalidated zero was "no throttle at all" - `inspectBackfills` takes `BackfillFilter` itself instead of restating it - `x g backfill` emits working source: no bare `throw new Error`, no no-op handler that checkpoints a page it never wrote. The row projection is exported so the generated test asserts the WORK and its idempotency - `handle` is at-least-once: documented in CHANGELOG, CLAUDE.md and the wiki, and pinned by a regression test driving a lost checkpoint - docs/architecture + wiki `JobDriver` samples carry the real interface, `backfills` and the `memory` driver included - `backfill-pass.test.ts` split at the 500-line ceiling into a shared `backfill-pass-fixture.ts` plus `backfill-pass-ledger.test.ts` - headers on three test files, `node:path` justified, misleading `::text` comment corrected, bare `throw` in a test replaced with an assertion Co-Authored-By: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
