fix(mcp)!: one name per tool — the served name and the published name were different - #126
Conversation
… were different An action was reachable under one name on the wire and published under another in `openapi.json`. `packages/mcp` serves `primitive.mcp?.name ?? primitive.name` — the export name, verbatim, and the only string `tools/call` accepts. Three action sites and one query site ran it through `toToolName()` first, so a client generated from the published contract called `publish_post` and the server answered tool-not-found. The served side was already right: it is what `defineAppMcp`'s `scopes:` map is keyed on. So the publishers were the wrong ones, and `toToolName` is deleted from both packages rather than deprecated — an exported name-deriver is a second way to spell one tool. BREAKING: `mcpTool` in `openapi.json`, `.tool().name` and `describeAction().mcp.tool` now carry the verbatim export name. `toToolName` is removed from `@ultimat3/action` and `@ultimat3/query`. 15 of the 17 published names across both tracked apps change. Three corrections to the issue as filed, each found by checking rather than reading: - Queries had the identical split (`toQueryTool().name`); #120 named only actions. - `x.manifest.json` never carried a tool name at all — `ActionFact.mcp` is `{ expose, description? }`. The third publisher is the DESCRIPTOR, read by `x actions describe`, `x actions list`, the `actions.describe` dev tool and `/_x`. The wrong word had propagated into five files before it was caught. - Nothing an app SERVES is renamed: `toMcpTools`/`toQueryTools` have no framework consumer, and `@ultimat3/ai` already passed the name through. What changes is what an app publishes. Enforced at two levels, because one was not enough. `packages/mcp/src/cross-surface.test.ts` is the only place that can compare the two sides — it reads `tools/list`, then drives `tools/call` with the name `openapi.json` published. But it lives at tier 4, and the packages that can reintroduce the bug are tier 3 and cannot import it, so its failure would arrive in a package the author does not own. Each of `action` and `query` also pins the rule in its own `index.test.ts`, where the edit is made. Every new assertion was watched failing against the old source. Two are stronger than they look: the cross-surface set-equality check alone would have PASSED before, because all three surfaces agreed on the wrong name, and an exact `toToolName` denylist is defeated by renaming the deriver — so the verbatim and structural halves carry the weight. Also corrected along the way: five claims that the tool "calls `action.run(...)`" (an action facade has no `.run`; it is `invoke`), a README diagram showing `POST /api/publishPost` (a path `derivePath` has never produced), and `job-handle.ts`'s claim that `@ultimat3/jobs` consumes its shape — it cannot, and `tenant`/`retry` having no defaults means the promised "zero rewriting" was unreachable by construction. Filed as #125. Fixes #120 Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01RBwWKBJkiogA4mDaJiJf3D

| - **BREAKING — an MCP tool is named by the export name, verbatim, on every surface. `snake_case` | ||
| tool names are gone, and so is `toToolName`.** One primitive was reachable under one name and | ||
| published under another. The served name has only ever been the export name — | ||
| `packages/mcp/src/from-action.ts:82` is the one name `tools/call` accepts and the one | ||
| `defineAppMcp`'s `scopes:` map is keyed on, and `@ultimat3/ai`'s LLM tool list agrees | ||
| (`packages/ai/src/tools.ts:72`) — while three *publishers* spelled the same tool | ||
| `publish_post`. So an agent handed `openapi.json` read `"mcpTool": "publish_post"`, called | ||
| `tools/call { name: "publish_post" }`, and got ToolNotFound: the catalog it was given was the | ||
| wrong one. The served side was right, so the publishers moved. | ||
|
|
||
| | Was | Now | | ||
| |---|---| | ||
| | `publishPost.tool().name` → `'publish_post'` | `'publishPost'` | | ||
| | `liveFeed.tool().name` → `'live_feed'` | `'liveFeed'` | | ||
| | `openapi.json` → `"x-ultimate": { "mcpTool": "publish_post" }` | `"mcpTool": "publishPost"` | | ||
| | `publishPost.describe().mcp.tool` → `'publish_post'`, and with it `x actions describe <name> --json`, the `actions.describe` MCP dev tool and the `/_x` **Routes** panel | `'publishPost'` | | ||
| | `import { toToolName } from '@ultimat3/action'` / `'@ultimat3/query'` | removed from both — there is no derivation left to call | | ||
|
|
||
| **What an app author changes.** Nothing that *worked* moves: a `tools/call`, a `scopes:` entry | ||
| and a `visibleTo` list were already spelled verbatim, and a snake_case `scopes:` entry was | ||
| already `X_MCP_SCOPE_UNKNOWN` at boot. What moves is everything read off the published contract | ||
| — run `x manifest` to regenerate `openapi.json`, and re-point any agent prompt, saved tool | ||
| allowlist, generated client or test that took its tool name from `x-ultimate.mcpTool`, | ||
| `describe().mcp.tool` or `.tool().name`. **15 committed names change** in the two tracked apps | ||
| alone — of 17 published `x-ultimate.mcpTool` values, `examples/dummy` moves 9 of 10 and | ||
| `dummy/social-media-clone` 6 of 7; a single-word export (`summarize`, `health`) was already its | ||
| own snake_case form and does not move. An app that fed `.tool()` descriptors | ||
| into its own MCP host — public API, and the one case where the name was live on a wire — renames | ||
| those tools for real. `x.manifest.json` is unaffected: its `mcp` fact is | ||
| `{ expose, description }` and never carried a tool name (`packages/manifest/src/schema.ts:85`). | ||

…tence Applying CodeRabbit's review of this branch. Six of seven were real: - `packages/action/CLAUDE.md` said all TEN of examples/dummy's published names returned ToolNotFound. Nine did. `summarize` is single-word, so it was already its own snake_case form — a count of the wrong names is not a count of the rows. - `packages/mcp/README.md` said the export name IS the tool name. It is the DEFAULT: the projection reads `primitive.mcp?.name ?? primitive.name`, so `mcp.name` is an explicit override — unreachable from `action()`/`query()`, whose declarations carry no `name` field, and available only to a hand-authored `ProjectablePrimitive`. Dated, per house style. - `job-handle.ts`'s header said "What consumes it: see `ActionJobHandle`" — circular, since that is the type being declared. Nothing in the framework consumes it (#125). - `status.yml` claimed seven entries closed or void; the table says six, plus one mostly closed and three open. - A fenced block had no language tag (MD040). Rejected one: "add a Migration block or codemod identifier to the BREAKING entry." `grep -c '^\*\*Migration' CHANGELOG.md` is 0 — no entry has ever used that shape. The entry already carries a "What an app author changes" paragraph naming `x manifest` and every surface to re-point, which is what the ~31 other BREAKING entries do. the tool name remains entirely inside the code span and move the “As of 2026-08”
date marker outside it, preserving the historical claim without presenting the

Closes #120.
One action was reachable under one name on the wire and published under a different name in
openapi.json. An agent handed the published contract calledpublish_post; the server answered tool-not-found.The split
publishPosttools/callacceptspackages/mcp/src/projectable.ts:44→from-action.ts:74publishPost.tool().namepackages/action/src/mcp-tool.ts:39publish_postopenapi.jsonx-ultimate.mcpToolpackages/action/src/http.ts:160publish_postdescribeAction().mcp.toolpackages/action/src/action.ts:359publish_posttoQueryTool().name— not in the issuepackages/query/src/mcp-tool.ts:42live_feedThe served side was already correct — it is what
defineAppMcp'sscopes:map is keyed on — so the four publishers were the wrong ones.toToolNameis deleted from both packages, not deprecated: an exported name-deriver is a second way to spell one tool, and axiom 1 forbids a second path.Three corrections to the issue as filed
Each came from checking rather than reading, and each made the change smaller or more accurate than the ticket implied.
x.manifest.jsonnever carried a tool name.ActionFact.mcpis{ expose, description? }(packages/manifest/src/schema.ts:85); both committed manifests have zero"tool"keys — confirmed independently when regenerating them produced no diff. The third publisher is the descriptor, read byx actions describe,x actions list, theactions.describedev tool and the/_xRoutes panel. The wrong word had propagated into five files before it was caught.toMcpTools/toQueryToolshave no framework consumer and@ultimat3/aialready passed the name through verbatim. What changes is what an app publishes — 15 of 17 names across the two tracked apps. The changelog entry says that, not the dramatic version.Enforced at two levels, because one is not enough
packages/mcp/src/cross-surface.test.tsis the only place that can compare the two sides: nothing at tier 3 can see what tier 4 serves. It readstools/list, then drivestools/callwith the exact stringopenapi.jsonpublished and asserts it is not-32601.But it lives at tier 4, and
action/queryare tier 3 and cannot import it — so its failure arrives in a package the author does not own, asexpect([...]).toContain("archive_order"). That is a puzzle, not an instruction. Each package therefore also pins the rule in its ownindex.test.ts, where the edit is made.Every new assertion was watched failing first
Two are subtler than they look, and both were caught by the agents that wrote them:
action.tstotool: \${name}X``).toToolNamedenylist is defeated by renaming the deriver, so the query pin also greps/tool_?name/iand the structural assertion (tool().name === registeredName) is what actually holds under any name.Mutation-tested: the snake_case derivation was reintroduced in
describeAction, atoToolNameexport re-added, and the served side broken viaprojectable.ts— each failed the expected pins, each reverted.Corrected along the way
action.run(...)". An action facade has no.run— that member belongs to the projection seam, and the real entry point isinvoke. The sentence's point (tool and HTTP route share one entry) was right; only the name was wrong.POST /api/publishPost— a pathderivePathhas never produced (it gives/api/posts/publish).job-handle.ts's claim that@ultimat3/jobsconsumes its shape. It cannot:isJobHandlerequires membership of a module-privateWeakMapno external object can join. Andtenant/retryhave no defaults by design, so the promised "zero rewriting" was unreachable by construction. Comments only, no runtime change → action/jobs:.job()produces a handle nothing can enqueue, andtenant/retrymean nothing ever could #125.normalize()swallows failures; it throwsSchemaUnsupportedError).
