This PR cleans up and modernizes the CMake build system and the continuous integration for this project.
The configure, build, install, and test results should be the same. One minor difference is I used
CMAKE_PROJECT_VERSIONin the pkgconfig file to set the version of the example to the current tagged version of the repository.
