FWIW, using either opencollective's widgets (https://docs.opencollective.com/help/contributing/development/readme-integration) or sponsorkit (https://github.com/antfu/sponsorkit) might help automate this I'd say sponsorkit specifically because it can be generated programmatically and be hosted somewhere else (so it doesn't need constant README updates), plus it could be re-used on Crystal's website.
