User Roles and Access Control:

  • Visitors: View and interact with visualizations.
  • Researchers: Add data of elephant sightings/events, decide whether the information is public/private, add notes, collaborate with other researchers.
  • Administrators: Verify researchers, verify data, manage other admin privileges.
  1. Elephant Conservation Data:
    • Track elephant population throughout the years.
    • Monitor changes in the area of their habitat over time.
    • Display elephant reserves and factors threatening them.
    • Assess the impact of conservation efforts.
    • Explore the relationship between elephants, forests, and climate change.
    • Ensure real-time updates whenever possible.
  2. Collaborative Notes:
    • Real-time collaboration for notes.
    • Asynchronous comments for notes.
    • Formatting options for notes (headings, body text, image attachments).
  3. Data Sources and Integration:
    • Utilize datasets and external databases, including IUCN's range data.
    • Allow researchers to add elephant sightings, which will be saved in the database.
  4. Map Visualization and Filtering:
    • View and filter elephant sightings by species on a map.
    • Click on a polygon or point to view more information.
    • Show statistical data as charts or infographics overlaid on the map.
    • Researchers can drop pins on the map to record sightings and add event details.
  5. Authentication and Security:
    • Researchers need authentication to add sightings and collaborate on notes.
    • User signup as a researcher requires admin authorization.
    • Private information is only accessible to authenticated users.
    • GDPR compliance is necessary.
