One of the ways that we like to accomplish things is through our working groups, which are member-driven.

Structure (How Working Groups Work) - March 2020 update

Purpose

Fostering productive discussion and exploration around the assessment of credibility is the heart of the Research Community, and Community/Working Groups serve as the heart of its participatory structure. A Community Group fosters discussions among community members in ways that grapple around the central questions of the Credibility Coalition.

Community Groups are small working groups around themes that are inherently interdisciplinary. We’re looking for ideas that basically demand people of different expertises and backgrounds to come together and foster creative brainstorming around an issue or question.

Requirements

You need a charter, with these elements:

  • At least two people to propose
  • Define a theme/question, 6 to 9-month time frame, and one of the following outputs:
    • CredCo blog post
    • Paper for journal/outlet
    • Grant/Project proposal to submit to funders or a microgrant
    • Indicators definition and data model development
    • One-day workshop (“CredCoEngage”)
  • A chair/co-chair willing to do this for the 6-month stretch who can help run regular meetings (2x month?), organize people, and ensure notes are taken.

Co-chairs:

  • Are responsible for and get to provide the overall direction of the group, based on an open participant model.
  • Confer at least twice a month with community research lead on progress and protocol.
  • Available with email/Slack for questions from CredCo and group itself.
  • Update the larger group at least twice a month during the weekly CredCo call.

Submit a draft charter that includes the details above to the Research Community Lead, and with approval, you’ll get creation of a Slack channel related to this topic in addition to a place for note publishing for the group.

FAQ

Q: What if our investigation is open ended, and/or the objective evolves?

That’s expected! We just think you need a clear topic/direction to begin; allow people to join or provide input to the agenda; and have a clear output to keep momentum. But if things evolve, you can request to change your charter.

Q: What if we have a different output in mind than those you listed above?

Lovely! Propose it.

Q: What if we want to have our working group live longer than the initial proposed timeframe?

If people would like to continue on working on the theme after the completion of the deliverables, that's great. Just create a new charter, with new deliverables. The reason we no longer have indefinite working groups is because we realized that it's good to allow people time and space to step back and decide if they want to recommit; it's a recognition that working groups are a lot of work for those involved.

Q: What if i want to be part of more than one working group?

That’s nice to know that you are so interested. And it's fine to listen into Slack working groups if the chair of the working group is ok with it -- lots of folks can be distracting, so thanks for your understanding.

However, it is a bit of a commitment to be involved in a working group, so for this first go-round, we ask you to choose one to be connected with officially -- which you'll sign on officially with your chairs, by the way.

(You can also ask Scott if there's special consideration possible.)

Q: What if i know someone who isn’t part of CredCo but wants to become involved?

Great! We think this is a wonderful way to get involved with the community. They need to go through a simple orientation process to get started, which includes a review of our Community Policies. Please connect that person to [email protected] who will get them set up in orientation. If there’s nothing set up on the horizon, you can also quickly learn how to do one and do the orientation yourself.
