fix(holds/pr-review): honour every hold label; pin the escalation hold; re-evaluate after a self-dismissed approval; pin dev-lead to ring0 (#2089, #2090, #1933) - #2091
Conversation
…onger claims a hold was lifted (#2089) pr_resume_suppressed only checked needs-human-review, so the retry sweep (and the event resume bridge) kept posting retry markers and dispatch guards on, and dispatching runs for, PRs held with dev-lead:hands-off or dev-lead:needs-human. The runs skipped at intent time, but the markers cluttered parked PRs and spent their retry attempts. pr_resume_suppressed now consults the shared hold-gate set (scripts/lib/hold-gate.sh) after the escalation-label check, before any budget read. needs-human-review keeps its #946 message. The hold notice's supersede rewrite said "the hold was lifted; dev-lead has picked this item up" whenever a notice for a different label replaced it, even though the old label was still on the PR. It now says the item is held under the new label when one replaces it, and keeps the "lifted" wording only for a real pickup. …n-holds an escalated PR (#2090) On 2026-10-09 pr-review re-ran its full cascade on #1902 three times in ten minutes after escalating it to a human, and the fix-request path removed the needs-human-review hold. The run logs show every one of those runs came in as a pr-auto-review repository_dispatch with FORCE_REVIEW=true: the pr-review/v1-next channel still served pr-review.yml from f34a765, before #2078, where any repository_dispatch set the human break-glass flag. #2078 (now on v1-next) derives FORCE_REVIEW only from an explicit client_payload.force_review. These tests replay the #1902 shapes end to end against review-one-pr.sh: an automated dispatch (FORCE_RE_REVIEW only) after auto-rebase moved the head, the same with a verdict already at the new head, and an unforced event run all stay paused on the hold and never call --remove-label. The controls show a human removing the label, or an @mention, still re-engages. A structural test pins the #2078 FORCE_REVIEW expression; it fails against the f34a765 pr-review.yml that ran. Code Review
This pull request updates the PR automation logic to ensure that all human-hold labels correctly suppress resume and retry actions, preventing unnecessary dispatches. It also refactors the hold notice collapse logic to distinguish between a hold being lifted and a hold being superseded by another label, updating the summary messages accordingly. The review feedback suggests avoiding direct command substitution inside the conditional statement in pr_resume_suppressed to prevent potential issues when running under set -e.

…ssed its approval (#1933) When the maintainer-comment gate (#1813) or the maintainer-review-thread gate (#1415) dismissed pr-review's approval at the head, and the blocker was then dealt with on that same head, the next run passed every gate and then no-oped with already-reviewed-at-head. The PR stayed unapproved until a new commit or a human @mention (#1907, the #1551 shape). lib/self-dismissed-approval.sh recognises that "pending re-evaluation" state from the REST reviews and issue events: pr-review's approval at the head is DISMISSED, its latest review_dismissed event was made by automation with one of the two gate messages, and no approval of ours at the head is standing. In that state review-one-pr.sh re-runs the full cascade at the same head, with every gate armed. It never re-posts an approval on its own. A human's dismissal, the #1596 accepted-defect dismissal, a supersede, or an unreadable timeline keeps the same-SHA no-op (fail closed). The extra API reads happen only when the latest marker at the head is an approval. Tests: lib unit tests (both gate messages, human dismissal, #1596, standing approval, unreadable input, message sync with review-one-pr.sh) and end to end through review-one-pr.sh (the #1907 sequence re-evaluates; a standing or human-dismissed approval still no-ops). The end-to-end case fails on the previous review-one-pr.sh. lint.yml now runs this file and the #2090 escalation-hold tests. … approval decides; real wrapper test - pr_resume_suppressed: a label set that cannot be fetched or is not a JSON array suppresses (fail closed) instead of reading as `[]`; the retry sweep's three callers pass `null` on a parse failure. The hold check captures its status before branching. - self-dismissed-approval: the NEWEST approval verdict at the head decides, so an older gate dismissal cannot revive an approval a human dismissed later; review ids are compared as strings and a missing id never matches. The live REST shape (dismissed_review.dismissal_message, numeric review_id) is kept. - hold notice: drop "(see the newer notice)" — the replacement may not post. - tests: negated greps (exempt from errexit) now fail explicitly; the hold short-circuit test stubs the budget gate; the hold-notice wrapper is driven end to end with gh stubbed and the PATCH body asserted. Approved by the maintainer: this repo's dev-lead now runs dev-lead/v139-ring0 instead of v139-stable, so dev-lead fixes reach this repo days sooner and ring0 gets real soak here. SC2 (#503 / epic #495) still holds: ring0 is promoted from next only after its dwell, and a bad ring0 is rolled back by moving the tag, with no PR to block. The guard now asserts a PROMOTED tier (ring<N> or stable) instead of stable, and still fails on next, @main or a SHA. The ring0 reusable declares the same inputs (agent_ref, event_name) as stable. The caller-stub freeze baseline is regenerated for the deliberate channel change, and the SC2 docs describe the ring0 pin. …ring0 pin #2091 review: the SC2 guard's header and comments, the guard test's description, the versioning ring model, the SC2 game-day doc and the AGENTS.md stub inventory now all state the promoted-channel rule (ring<N> or stable, never next) and name this repo's dev-lead/v139-ring0 pin, instead of the old "self-review stays on stable" wording. Summary
Three fixes to how dev-lead and pr-review treat human holds and pr-review's own approvals, plus switching this repo's dev-lead to the ring0 channel (approved by the maintainer). Each is a separate commit, and review fixes follow in 61a177f.
1. #2089: dev-lead's retry sweep ignored
dev-lead:hands-offanddev-lead:needs-human(978b9f4)pr_resume_suppressednow checks the shared hold set inscripts/lib/hold-gate.sh:needs-human-review,dev-lead:needs-humananddev-lead:hands-off.<new>label". It used to say the hold "was lifted" while the label was still on the PR.2. #2090: pr-review re-reviewed an escalated PR and cleared its hold (903db15, tests only)
repository_dispatchruns onpr-review/v1-next=f34a765. That version predates fix(pr-review): set FORCE_REVIEW only from an explicit dispatch flag (#2034) #2078, and in it anyrepository_dispatchsetFORCE_REVIEW(the human break-glass). So these runs bypassed the escalation pause, the same-commit check and the cycle cap, and the fix-request path removed the label.v1-next.tests/test_review_one_pr_escalation_hold.batsreplays the feat(#1894): answer "why isn't this PR approved?" from the real pr-review gate chain (+ why-not-approved agent) #1902 sequence. Automated dispatches stay paused and never call--remove-label, while a human removing the label, or an @mention, still re-engages. A pin on the fix(pr-review): set FORCE_REVIEW only from an explicit dispatch flag (#2034) #2078 expression fails against thef34a765workflow.3. #1933: pr-review never re-approved after its own gate dismissed its approval (bc2a0fa)
scripts/lib/self-dismissed-approval.sh, recognises a "pending re-evaluation" state. All of these must hold:review_dismissedevent was made by automation with one of the two gate messages (pr-review can't approve ANY open PR: maintainer-comment gate needs pushedDate (always null) and treats codeant/qodo/auto-rebase comments as maintainer findings — 18/18 PRs stranded #1813 comment disposition, [Phase 4] Close the maintainer review-gate gap — dev-lead PRs cannot be blocked by the owner (shared identity + agent-resolved threads) #1415 maintainer thread);review-one-pr.shre-runs the full cascade, with every gate armed, at the same head. It never re-posts an approval by itself.4. This repo's dev-lead runs
dev-lead/v139-ring0instead ofv139-stable(1afed77)nextonly after its dwell, and a bad ring0 is rolled back by moving the tag, with no PR to block.tests/test_sc2_self_review_channel.batsnow asserts a promoted tier (ring or stable) and still fails onnext,@mainor a SHA.agent_ref,event_name). The caller-stub freeze baseline is regenerated for this deliberate channel change, and the SC2 docs are updated.Fixes #2089. Fixes #2090. Fixes #1933.
