Can running garden instance commit to a docker image?

Hi, We all know garden supports running docker images, can running garden instance commit to a docker image?

Hi, @egarle,

Although garden-linux has support for running containers based on Docker images, the current implementation does not run the Docker daemon itself, and hence does not support the full range of operations available on Docker images and containers. I don't believe there's any way to take a garden container and commit it to a Docker image, much less to push it out to a Docker registry so it can be used elsewhere.

I find that Garden setup Container rootfs by itself, code here, And Docker have command like "docker save" or "docker export", it will save the container's rootfs and get a "xx.tar" file. so I think it will not be very hard to save Garden container to be a new docker image, is that ritht? maybe just copy the code from docker about the file system operation.

Hi, @tsjsdbd,

Yes, one could theoretically extract a tarball containing the filesystem contents of a particular Garden container, similar to what docker export produces, although the Garden API does not support this operation explicitly. Implementing docker save or docker commit would be more complicated, as there is additional Docker-specific image metadata that must be preserved for existing layers and created for a new layer. I don't see that Diego has a particular need for any of these operations, although if you are interested in adding these capabilities to garden-linux itself you should discuss that with the Garden team via the https://github.com/cloudfoundry-incubator/garden-linux repository.
