Summary

  • Remove stale DESIGN.md so the repository no longer tracks both DESIGN.md and design.md.
  • Keep design.md, which contains the current design-system rollout notes and is referenced by the design-grid guard.
  • Fix a Windows-specific checkout problem: on the default case-insensitive Windows filesystem, Git cannot materialize DESIGN.md and design.md as separate files, so DESIGN.md can appear permanently modified after checkout or pull.

Validation

  • npm run lint
  • npm run test:unit
  • npm run test:coverage
  • Coverage is still >= 60% for statements, lines, functions, and branches
  • SonarQube PR analysis is green or any remaining issues are explicitly documented below
  • npm run check:docs-sync
  • Case-insensitive tracked path collision check via git ls-files
  • git diff --check upstream/release/v3.8.44..HEAD
  • Push hooks: check:any-budget:t11, check:tracked-artifacts

Tests Added Or Updated

  • None. This is a tracked-file cleanup only; no production code changed.

Coverage Notes

  • This PR does not change src/, open-sse/, electron/, or bin/, so coverage is not affected.

Reviewer Notes

  • This removal is specifically to fix Windows checkouts where the repository's case-conflicting tracked paths cause a persistent dirty working tree.
  • DESIGN.md is the stale duplicate introduced by the DESING.md => DESIGN.md rename.
  • design.md is the current document lineage from the dashboard visual identity work and should remain the tracked design document.

release/v3.8.44 tracks both DESIGN.md and design.md. On Windows, Git cannot materialize both paths separately, so DESIGN.md appears permanently modified after checkout/pull.

Keep design.md because it contains the updated design-system rollout notes, and remove the stale uppercase duplicate created by the DESING.md rename.

@diegosouzapw I believe this should be addressed as a high priority. This bug makes development on Windows impossible. I request that you merge this ASAP.

Merged — thank you, @backryun! 🙏 And apologies — this cleans up a regression I introduced: in #6097 I renamed a stale DESING.md typo file to DESIGN.md to preserve its content, without noticing the repo already tracked a current design.md (lowercase). On case-insensitive Windows filesystems git can't materialize both, breaking checkout. Removing the stale DESIGN.md (and keeping design.md, the live design-system notes) is exactly right. Verified no references point at the uppercase DESIGN.md (the *_DESIGN.md hits in scripts are all DISCOVERY_TOOL_DESIGN.md, a different file). Ships in the next release.

…inference#6140)

Remove stale root DESIGN.md (Windows case-conflict with design.md). Integrated into release/v3.8.44.
