fix(sse): echo the client-requested model, not the combo leaf (#18494) - #18495
Root cause: handleChatCore echoed requestedModel, which comes from the dispatched body.model. Combo dispatch (executeChatWithBreaker in src/sse/handlers/chatHelpers.ts) has already rewritten that to ${provider}/${model}. This PR echoes clientRawRequest.body.model instead, which is the snapshot of what the client sent. When that is absent, it falls back to requestedModel, so non-combo requests behave as before.
Base is the active release/v3.8.x branch (release/v3.8.53 @ faef7dcbf2)
Proof Of Fix (required)
TDD: tests/unit/response-model-echo-client-requested.test.ts drives handleChatCore the way combo dispatch calls it. The dispatched body.model is the leaf (openai/gpt-4o-mini), and clientRawRequest.body.model is the client's alias.
Failing output before the fix (base faef7dcbf2): streaming and non-streaming both echo the leaf
Only chatCore.ts (one call site), chatCore/requestSetup.ts (a pure helper next to resolveChatCoreRequestSetup) and the new test
No test weakened or deleted; the echo stays gated exactly as before (opt-in setting / Codex CLI / Claude Code)
Validation
Change type: routing / SSE
Focused tests: the new test plus the existing echo and chatCore suites (response-model-echo-1311, codex-effort-model-echo-3697, chatcore-noauth-echo-model-10571, v1-completions-model-header-match-6426, chatcore-streaming-pipeline, chatcore-sanitization, chatcore-combo-context-limit-8378, tests/unit/chatcore/*): 98/98 pass
npm run typecheck:core clean; eslint and prettier clean on the touched files
Reviewer Notes
resolveNoAuthEchoModel still runs after this and still overrides the echo for bare requests to noAuth catalog providers. That path is unchanged.
clientRawRequest.body is bounded for logging (cloneBoundedForLog), but model is a short top-level string and is never truncated in practice. If it were missing, the helper would fall back to today's value.
…r-inference#18494)
The response-model echo (cheaper-inference#1311 opt-in, cheaper-inference#3697 Codex CLI, Claude Code) read
requestedModel from the dispatched body.model, which combo and alias dispatch
have already rewritten to the leaf target. Echo clientRawRequest.body.model
(the client's original snapshot) and fall back to requestedModel when absent.
Streaming and non-streaming responses now echo the model requested by the client instead of the underlying combo target when model echoing is enabled. This applies to Codex CLI and Claude Code responses using echoRequestedModelName. When the client request does not include a usable model name, the existing fallback behavior is preserved.
The chat handler now uses the model in the client’s raw request for response-model echoing when that value is a nonblank string. Otherwise, it falls back to the dispatched model. Tests cover streaming and non-streaming responses with echoing enabled and disabled.

Summary
Resolve and validate echoed model open-sse/handlers/chatCore/requestSetup.ts, open-sse/handlers/chatCore.ts, tests/unit/response-model-echo-client-requested.test.ts, changelog.d/fixes/18495-echo-client-requested-model.md
The handler resolves the echoed model from the client’s raw request, with the dispatched model as fallback. Tests check streaming and non-streaming responses with echoing enabled and disabled. The changelog records the change.
This change makes the echoed model match the client's original name for combo requests. Alias requests, bare Codex models and semantic-cache hits can still return a different model name, so the stated goal is only partly met. No outage or data-loss risk was found, but these gaps should be resolved or explicitly accepted before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to b7ebc
The change is narrow, but a caller-specific name can remain in reusable responses and reach a later request. Existing caller isolation limits the exposure; no privilege escalation was established.
Retained concerns
Low · security · inferred: Client-specific echo mutates reusable non-streaming response objects. Cache and idempotency writes retain translatedResponse before echoModelInObject changes it. A later request with matching replay identity but a different combo name can receive the earlier name, including through a path that does not apply the current request's echo policy. The reference-sharing mechanism predates this PR, but changing the echo from the dispatched target to the raw client name adds request-specific metadata to those entries. Separate API-key IDs remain isolated; exposure across independently authenticated callers was not established.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated exposure is response metadata within a replay namespace. It requires an echo-enabled completed non-streaming response and a later matching replay. Legacy semantic caching additionally requires explicit temperature zero and enabled cache controls; idempotency requires a matching supplied request key. Independent API-key IDs prevent the inspected key collisions.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A caller can prime a reusable response through an accepted combo name. The subsequent in-place echo changes the object held by the legacy memory cache and idempotency map. A matching request using another name can then receive the priming name. This supports bounded metadata disclosure or integrity drift among clients sharing a replay namespace, not arbitrary response-content modification or privilege gain.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The echo treats the client name as response data: object fields are assigned directly, and SSE payloads are parsed and JSON-serialized. The changed helper selects only a nonblank string. The inspected echo flow does not use that value as a routing target or authorization identity.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Counterevidence limits the ownership concern: legacy SQLite storage serializes before the echo mutation, and live streaming cache writes use an assembled body separate from the downstream SSE echo transform. Streaming writes reject non-200 and truncated results. In-memory replay entries have expiry checks, but replay itself does not restore request-specific echo identity.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Separate reusable response ownership from per-request presentation: retain independent cache and idempotency snapshots, then apply echo to a fresh delivery object on both live and replay paths.

Explanation
The title follows the Conventional Commits format with type fix and scope sse. It states the main change: the echoed model is now the client-requested model instead of the combo leaf. The title matches the changeset, which adds resolveClientEchoModel and changes the echo call site in chatCore.ts.

Explanation
The description follows the template in most respects. It has a Summary that explains the root cause and the fix. It has Related Issues with Closes #18494. It has Target Branch with the base release branch checked. It has Validation with test results, typecheck, and lint notes. It has Reviewer Notes that call out the noAuth override and the #6426 ordering. Two template items are not filled in: the 'Tests Added Or Updated' section lists no test files, and the 'Coverage Notes' section does not explain coverage for the src/open-sse changes. The description also includes a 'Proof Of Fix' section that the template does not list, and it does not state the Change type checkbox list in the template's form.
Resolution
Optional improvements: list the changed test file under 'Tests Added Or Updated' (tests/unit/response-model-echo-client-requested.test.ts), and add a short 'Coverage Notes' entry that names the tests covering open-sse/handlers/chatCore.ts and requestSetup.ts.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #18494 requires that, with response-model echo enabled, every model and response.model field echoes the client-sent name, not the combo leaf. Reviewed head: open-sse/handlers/chatCore/requestSetup.ts adds resolveClientEchoModel(clientRawBody, requestedModel). It returns the non-blank string clientRawBody.model and falls back to requestedModel. This matches the issue's proposed fix. open-sse/handlers/chatCore.ts imports resolveClientEchoModel at head, which confirms the wiring. The raw change summary and PR description state that the echo call site now uses this helper in place of requestedModel. The call-site line itself was not read, because the diff and the chatCore.ts file read were truncated. The echo gating (opt-in setting, Codex CLI, Claude Code) is unchanged per the summary. The issue's validation plan asks for a unit test covering streamed and non-streamed echo with the echo on, plus an echo-off control. The new test file tests/unit/response-model-echo-client-requested.test.ts (+100 lines) covers those three cases per the raw summary. The author reports 3/3 passing. This assessment did not run the test. The no-auth override (resolveNoAuthEchoModel) and the keepalive frame are outside this change, as the issue describes.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files are: a changelog entry (changelog.d/fixes/18495-echo-client-requested-model.md); the echo call site in open-sse/handlers/chatCore.ts; the new pure helper resolveClientEchoModel in open-sse/handlers/chatCore/requestSetup.ts; and the new unit test file. Each change connects directly to issue #18494. The changelog documents the fix. The helper and call site implement the requested echo source. The test covers the issue validation plan. The PR description reports no changes to the echo gating or the no-auth override. No unrelated change was found in the available evidence. The chatCore.ts diff could not be read in full, so the exact scope of that file's edit rests on the raw change summary and the PR description.

Keep the client's original model for the echo on both routes.
On /v1/chat/completions, the route resolves the model alias on parsedBody before calling handleChat. handleChat captures clientRawRequest from that object, so clientRawRequest.body.model already holds the resolved name. resolveClientEchoModel reads that field first, so the response echoes the resolved name instead of the alias the client sent.
On /v1/responses, withCodexPreferredModel replaces the body with { ...body, model } before handleChat. A bare Codex model therefore echoes with the codex/ prefix. The Responses keepalive frame also reads this rewritten value.
Capture the client's original model in each route before any rewrite. Pass that value to the echo logic and to the Responses keepalive frame. The combo leaf case already works because the rewrite happens after the snapshot.

Apply the current echo model to semantic-cache hits.
A semantic-cache hit returns before the echo step. The stored response keeps the upstream model name, so a hit can return a model name different from the client-requested name when echo is enabled. Streamed replays have the same issue.
Pass the echo model into checkSemanticCache. Before the hit response is built, apply echoModelInObject to a copy of the cached response. For streamed replays, build the SSE from the echoed copy.

Summary
echoRequestedModelName[BUG] not launching #1311, the always-on Codex CLI echo [feature] Codex CLI compatibility shim: echo requested (effort-suffixed) model id in Responses payloads so the UI shows the active effort #3697, and the Claude Code echo) writes the combo leaf target intoresponse.modelinstead of the name the client sent. Codex CLI users see the leaf model in their status line, and strict clients that checkresponse.model === request.modelreject combo and alias responses.handleChatCoreechoedrequestedModel, which comes from the dispatchedbody.model. Combo dispatch (executeChatWithBreakerinsrc/sse/handlers/chatHelpers.ts) has already rewritten that to${provider}/${model}. This PR echoesclientRawRequest.body.modelinstead, which is the snapshot of what the client sent. When that is absent, it falls back torequestedModel, so non-combo requests behave as before.Related Issues
