fix(api): keep public OpenAPI metadata aligned with the deployment - #18349
The public OpenAPI document advertised version 3.8.35 and sent clients to http://localhost:20128 even when served from another domain, port or base path. Generate it from the canonical specification and the build's package version, using the deployment-relative server URL ./.
Generation runs during development, the isolated Next build and standalone assembly. Production startup does not write the document or trust forwarded headers. The helper is included in the npm file list and package policy; no dependency or lockfile changes are needed.
The large generated YAML diff synchronizes 200 to 732 documented paths with docs/openapi.yaml. It adds no runtime routes. Tests compare operations, schemas, security and non-version metadata with that canonical source. Importing the YAML as an offline file still requires configuring the deployment URL, because an offline file has no serving origin.
Validation on base 3fc55c78e72d8aea9edbb770d9478f96497a5145, Node 24.20.0, isolated temporary data:
Four version/origin regressions fail on the base artifact (exit 1) and pass on the candidate (exit 0).
33 affected build/assembly tests pass; the final focused and package-policy set passes 43 tests with no failures or skips. These sets overlap and are not a full-suite total.
Six artifact/generator tests pass after the final scalar-formatting adjustment; generation remains byte-stable after Prettier.
Script syntax, formatting, test-file ESLint, file-size and diff checks pass. The repository ESLint policy excludes the changed build/dev scripts; this is not a claim that those scripts were linted.
The npm dry-run manifest inspection was stopped after its 15-minute limit without a result (SIGTERM, incomplete). Package import-closure tests pass; they do not replace a full package build/boot gate.
Full unit/Vitest, coverage, clean-install, production build and deployment smoke were not run locally. A global complexity scan was stopped as incomplete after confirming its scan roots excluded every changed file. Required CI and integration checks remain pending; this PR is not certified merge-ready.
The base incident remains open. That warning identifies the incident; it does not classify any future failure on this PR as inherited without an exact-base comparison.
The artifact test compared the committed copy with docs/openapi.yaml and the
package version, so any PR documenting a route, and the next version bump, went
red. Test the generator's output instead, which is what a build ships, and pin
only the committed copy's deployment-relative servers.
Dev and the isolated build wrote that tracked file, dirtying the tree on any
docs change. Only the assembly step generates it now, into its output directory.
Add gen:public-openapi to refresh the copy, and public/openapi.yaml to the
cycle bump set.
Public API specifications now include the build version and a deployment-relative server URL, and are generated during standalone builds.
Added a command to refresh the public API specification.
Documentation
Clarified how to use the downloaded API specification: set its base URL manually when importing it into external tools.
The build generates a public OpenAPI spec with the package version and a deployment-relative server URL. Standalone assembly refreshes the spec, and the LTS cut plan updates its version. The API reference documents the relative URL and notes that imported specs need a manually set base URL.
Changes: Public OpenAPI generation
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Generate the public spec scripts/build/publicOpenApi.mjs, package.json, tests/unit/build/public-openapi-artifact-18331.test.ts, docs/reference/API_REFERENCE.md, changelog.d/fixes/18331-public-openapi-metadata.md
The generator reads docs/openapi.yaml and the package version, sets a relative server URL, and writes the public spec when it changes. Tests cover generated metadata, canonical contract parity, regeneration, and CLI behavior. The API reference and changelog describe generation and use.
Generate during standalone assembly scripts/build/assembleStandalone.mjs, scripts/build/pack-artifact-policy.ts, tests/unit/build/public-openapi-artifact-18331.test.ts
Standalone assembly calls the generator after copying public assets, including in the copyNatives path. The build artifact policy allows the generator script. Tests check packaged metadata and that unchanged output does not change the artifact modification time.
Bump the public spec version scripts/release/dry-run-lts-cut.mjs, tests/unit/dry-run-lts-cut.test.ts, tests/unit/build/public-openapi-artifact-18331.test.ts
The LTS cut plan includes public/openapi.yaml and updates its info.version. Tests check the bump plan and version update.
cheaper-inference/OmniRoute#18393: Adds an endpoint to docs/openapi.yaml, which this change uses as the canonical source for the generated public spec.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 9e44c
The change keeps generated API requests on the serving deployment without adding runtime routes or changing authorization. No introduced security issue was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns incomplete packaging and runtime validation, including workflows that serve the committed document without regeneration.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The changed request destination affects clients consuming the public description: ./ resolves against the document's serving deployment and base path instead of the client's localhost. The inspected changes do not grant additional tenant, credential, database, or runtime-route authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The new generation path accepts local build inputs rather than request-controlled identity or origin information. Release mutation remains subject to the existing execute-mode, remote, and confirmation controls; the new constant file mapping adds only public metadata to that authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Interrupted document writes can leave incomplete output until regeneration; repeated generation repairs differing content. The inspected normal callers generate into build or packaging output, and no new security-sensitive live-state transition was established. Atomic deployment or concurrent serving behavior was not validated.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed files support the #18331 objective of a build-generated public spec with the build version and a deployment-relative server URL. Changes by file: scripts/build/publicOpenApi.mjs implements the generator. scripts/build/assembleStandalone.mjs calls it when it writes the standalone output. package.json adds the gen:public-openapi script and packages the helper. scripts/build/pack-artifact-policy.ts allows the helper path. scripts/release/dry-run-lts-cut.mjs and tests/unit/dry-run-lts-cut.test.ts add public/openapi.yaml to the version-bump set, so the committed copy stays aligned with the version. tests/unit/build/public-openapi-artifact-18331.test.ts covers these paths. The changelog and API reference entries describe the change. The large public/openapi.yaml update synchronises 200 to 732 documented paths with docs/openapi.yaml. The issue states that the existing paths are correct, so this path sync is broader than the issue. It follows from the chosen design: the public copy is generated from the canonical source. The PR discloses it, and the PR states that no runtime routes are added. The validation base cited in the PR (3fc55c7) differs from the whole-PR merge base supplied to this review (f000c11). This does not change the scope judgement. No change was found that is unrelated to the issue.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Linked issue #18331 is the only active direct target. Its core symptoms are a wrong hard-coded server URL and a stale info.version in the served /openapi.yaml. The head meets the version part. scripts/build/publicOpenApi.mjs sets info.version from package.json, and the artifact test confirms it. The head also meets the core server-URL symptom. It sets spec.servers to a single entry with url './' and description 'This deployment', so the served document no longer points to localhost:20128. The issue's Proposal also requires these items, which the head does not implement: (1) keep http://localhost:20128 as a second servers entry for local use; the head has only the './' entry; (2) serve the spec from a route handler that derives servers[0].url from the request origin, honours OMNIROUTE_TRUSTED_PROXIES, X-Forwarded-Proto/Host and OMNIROUTE_BASE_PATH; the PR states that it adds no runtime routes and does not trust forwarded headers; (3) support an optional OMNIROUTE_PUBLIC_URL override. The PR also states that an imported offline YAML still needs manual URL configuration. The relative './' design can meet the Swagger UI and same-origin cases. It does not provide the explicit localhost entry, the request-time derivation, or the override the issue asks for. These are concrete unmet coding requirements. The test 'the committed copy is a generated spec with deployment-relative servers' pins only './'.
Resolution
Add a second servers entry with url 'http://localhost:20128' (description for local use) in scripts/build/publicOpenApi.mjs, regenerate public/openapi.yaml, and add a unit test that asserts the entry. If the maintainers accept the build-time './' design instead of the route handler, OMNIROUTE_TRUSTED_PROXIES handling, and OMNIROUTE_PUBLIC_URL override, record that waiver explicitly on #18331 or in the PR before merge. Then re-run the assessment.

Replace the public spec only after the full write succeeds.
When npm run gen:public-openapi refreshes a changed spec while Next serves public/openapi.yaml, writeFileSync(target, content) truncates the served file before completing the write. A concurrent request can receive an incomplete spec. An interrupted write can leave the spec invalid. Write to a unique temporary file in the same directory, then replace target with renameSync. Keep the unchanged-content check. (nodejs.org)
Based on learnings, “Flag shared-state file updates that expose truncated or partially written contents to concurrent readers.”
