Systematic rejections

  • Anything awesome about
    • Combinatorics – Off-topic, but likely to fit in the Awesome Math list.
    • Networks for causal inference: Bayesian networks, DAGs, Markov graphs etc. – Off-topic, but also likely (just likely) to fit in the Awesome Math list.
    • (Computational) neural networks – Off-topic, but likely to fit in the Awesome Deep Learning list.
  • Anything copy-pasted from the Wikipedia English entry on SNA software, which is embarrassingly bad.
  • Anything too expensive for undergraduate students – Exceptions:
    • Software bought by universities (e.g. ArcGIS, Mathematica, MATLAB, Stata, UCINET, …).
    • Software bought by public (e.g. military) institutions.

Specific rejections

These submissions have been rejected from the list after a contributor had a look at them.

Conferences

Software

  • DAMN – Windows-only, documented as crash-prone, not updated, probably superseded by better alternatives.
  • EgoNet - Limited analytical capabilities.
  • EgoWeb (RAND) - Open-source, but no source online.
  • HistoGraph - Online tool to geocode stuff and plot geographic networks (paper), but more about maps than about networks.
  • IBM SPSS Modeler Social Network Analysis - Even the name of the software hurts the eye.
  • KeyLines - Nice, but probably too expensive.
  • NetDraw - Windows-only, still updated but shows no particular awesomeness (sorry).
  • NetLogo (tutorial). Not awesome, though the ABM crowd might disagree.
  • Network Analysis And Visualization – Mostly outdated or 404 links to Java libraries that offer less than those listed.
  • PARTNER (Program to Analyze, Record, and Track Networks to Enhance Relationships) - Commercial (yes, but university-based, so cheap for students)? Analytics (yes, by teams of PARTNER experts)?
  • SAS Social Network Analysis - Windows-only, not about network analysis.
  • yEd / yFiles - Online and offline diagram editor, not free.

Also, most entries from this list are no longer maintained, 404, or not really awesome.
