The extension doesn’t work with elements in iframes. It shows a _“Could not read the required data from the element.”_ error message

Go to any CodePen-based demo such as https://codepen.io/bramus/pen/vYvXWyv and right click the iframe’s contents and select Inspect. The extension will show a “Could not read the required data from the element.” error message:

OK, this one gets a bit technical: When selecting an element inside an iframe, the reported value for $0 returns undefined when calling chrome.devtools.inspectedWindow.eval. This is a bug on Chromium’s end which I can’t work around. The bug is most likely the same one as https://crbug.com/1480418

In theory one can tap into iframes by passing the frameURL into chrome.devtools.inspectedWindow.eval, but the problem is that you don’t know which URL to use. You could get the URL from the selectedNode ($0.getRootNode().location), but to get that you need a reference to $0 in the first place. Since the onSelectionChanged callback has no arguments to indicate which node you’ve selected, you’re basically touching in the dark.

Because this bug needs to be fixed on Chrome’s end, I am marking this as wontfix This will not be worked on and adding it to the FAQ This question/bug is part of the FAQ .
