  • Released in version: 0.1
  • Also called: "Incident media"

After sending an alert with Buoy or responding to Buoy alerts, you can use Buoy's incident media sharing features to record video, audio, or take still pictures and quickly share that media with other responders. "Sharing" sends a copy of the recording(s) to the Buoy instance you’re using. This means that even if something bad happens to your phone (e.g., it is damaged or confiscated), a copy of the video/audio/picture you recorded will exist on a different, remote computer for safer-keeping.

Sharing recorded media also means the files are immediately available to other Team members who have responded to the alert. This way, responders who arrive on-scene can document the incident, and also provide context to responders who are still en-route, so that they know what they’re getting into.

ℹ️ This feature is similar to how the ACLU Mobile Justice apps work. However, unlike the ACLU Mobile Justice app, any recordings you make with Buoy are immediately available to any responders involved in the incident with which you associated the recording. This means more copies of the recording, which makes it that much harder for authorities to suppress the recording. Additionally, Buoy's peer-review model does not rely on any trusted authority, even one as trustworthy as the ACLU.

This page documents Buoy's incident media sharing interface, features, and capabilities.

Accessing incident media and sharing tools

Closeup screenshot of the "Record" and "Incident media menu" buttons on the incident toolbar.

The incident media and media sharing tools are available near the center of the incident toolbar.

Record button

The Record button enables you to use your device's media recording capabilities to record video, audio, or take still pictures. The specific features available to you will depend on the specifications of your particular device. For instance, if your device lacks a camera, you will not be able to record video.

Incident media menu

The incident media menu is the drop-down menu next to the Record button. It has a badge indicating the number of media files attached to the current incident. Tap on or click the incident media menu button to reveal the incident menu panel where you can review incident media.

Recording incident media

To record new media during an incident or to share an existing video, audio, or picture file with fellow responders, do this:

  1. Tap on or click the Record button. Depending on the capabilities of your device, you will be able to choose what kind of media to record. For example, this screenshot shows options to take a still picture (using the "Camera" button), a video (using the "Camcorder" button), or share a file created with another app (using the "Documents" button): Closeup screenshot of the incident media type selection dialogue box on Firefox for Android.
  2. If presented with a media type selection dialogue, tap on the device you want to use to record the media (video, audio, still picture, or existing file).
  3. Use your device's camera or audio recorder interface to begin recording.
  4. Press the "Stop" button when you are finished, and then press the "Ok" or "Accept" buttons to begin uploading the file.

💡 Different devices may display different video or audio recording interfaces. Familiarize yourself with your device's interface when preparing your Team(s) before you face a real emergency situation so you know how to operate it when you need to.

When the upload completes, your video, audio, or still image will be immediately available to fellow responders.

Reviewing incident media

To view shared media, do this:

  1. Tap on or click the incident media menu button. This will reveal the incident media panel, which groups shared incident media according to its type (videos, still images, and audio recordings), as shown here: Closeup screenshot of an empty incident media panel.
  2. When you or a fellow responder record and share media, a preview of the media file will be displayed in its grouped section, as shown here: Closeup screenshot of an incident media panel showing one video and one still image.
  3. To watch a video attachment or listen to an audio attachment, tap on or click the "Play" button in the video or audio file's playback controller bar.
