* fix: load modelopt NVFP4 per-tensor scales at native dtype
quant_method: modelopt has no transformers quantizer, so the conversion
loader cast every source to the bf16 skeleton dtype before the NVFP4
converters ran. uint8 qdata and e4m3 scales survive that, but the fp32
weight_scale_2 was rounded (up to ~0.4%), so the experts'
per_tensor_scale, the dequantized non-routed linears and _nvfp4_pts no
longer matched the grid the modelopt merge reads from the file.
Keys routed to the NVFP4 converters now keep their checkpoint dtype for
scales and uint8/fp8 weights on every load path, with or without the
rank0-only patch. Float weights are still cast to the skeleton dtype.
This replaces the U8/F8 special case in the rank0-only materialize patch.
* test: move CPU-only NVFP4 modelopt load test to kernels_cpu
The CPU lanes ignore tests/integrations/kernels/, so the test only ran
on the GPU kernels lane even though it needs no GPU. tests/integrations/
kernels_cpu/ is collected by the existing tests/integrations/ argument.
* chore: pin pytest to 9.1.1
CI picked up pytest 9.2.0, which breaks two CPU tests that pass on 9.1.1:
- test_trajectory_tracks_dist_muon: pytest.approx now iterates the expected
value, and the test passes 0-d tensors.
- test_chunked_forward: torch._dynamo.config.recompile_limit is gone by the time
it runs, after test_encoder_canvas monkeypatched it on the same xdist worker.
Pin every place that installs pytest until those tests are fixed.
(cherry picked from commit 7286a73)
transformers 5.21 calls `hf_quantizer.update_weight_conversions(weight_conversions,
model)`, so the NVFP4-aware FP8 quantizer's override raised a TypeError for every
fp8 checkpoint once installed (use_dsv4_kernels + use_scattermoe). It now forwards
the extra arguments, which keeps 5.20.x working too.
The `$` anchors on the expert converters stay: besides keeping `.weight` off the
`.weight_scale*` keys on 5.20.x, they stop 5.21's base `update_weight_conversions`
from rewriting the NVFP4 expert converters into Fp8Dequantize + `weight_scale_inv`
converters.
Adds a CPU test that runs a tiny DeepSeek-V4 NVFP4 meta model through
`get_model_conversion_mapping` with the quantizer.

LoRA merge updates
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Merge inputs and shard selection src/axolotl/cli/merge_lora.py, src/axolotl/cli/utils/lora_merge.py, tests/utils/lora/test_merge_lora.py
The merge accepts a separate base configuration and honors configured weight indexes. Renaming logic supports bare keys and unanchored scoped patterns.
The merge detects ModelOpt FP8 scales, supports scalar, row, and block scale layouts, and reuses scales for format-preserving merges.
Merge-aware NVFP4 LoRA
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Expert-range snapping and gradient paths src/axolotl/integrations/kernels/libs/sonicmoe/*, tests/integrations/kernels/sonicmoe/test_nvfp4_gradients.py
Merge-aware processing handles expert ranges in chunks. A fused Triton kernel performs snapping when supported; the chunked fallback and gradient paths are also updated.
Cut-cross-entropy updates
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Gradient options and installation updates src/axolotl/integrations/cut_cross_entropy/*, scripts/*, docs/airgapped.qmd, examples/colab-notebooks/*, tests/integrations/test_cut_cross_entropy_args.py
Adds options for fp32 hidden-state gradient accumulation and gradient filtering. Installation references and the install-hint test now use v0.2.1.
Distributed Marlin cache behavior
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Gathered-weight state and cache handling src/axolotl/integrations/kernels/libs/scattermoe_lora/runtime.py, src/axolotl/integrations/kernels/libs/scattermoe_lora/marlin_w4a16/backend.py, tests/integrations/kernels/scattermoe_lora/*
Runtime state identifies gathered experts. Marlin preparation uses that state to select cache behavior, with tests for gathered and rank-resident weights.
Test dependency pins
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Pin pytest across test environments .github/workflows/*, cicd/Dockerfile-uv.jinja, docker/Dockerfile-uv, pyproject.toml
Pins pytest to version 9.1.1 in CI workflows, Docker tooling, and project dependencies.
The installer references a cut-cross-entropy tag that does not exist, so installs and builds that use it fail. Merged single-shard outputs can reference a missing index file. DDP runs can lose the original quantized weight data, and ZeRO-3 with gradient checkpointing can fail. Resolve the tag, the index regeneration and the DDP weight handling before merging.

Autofix · Keep fixing CodeRabbit findings and required CI, and resolving merge conflicts
Thanks for using CodeRabbit! It's free for OSS, and your support helps us grow. If you like it, consider giving us a shout-out.
The new TODO describes a real stale-cache risk in the data_ptr-keyed caches.
_engine_key builds the _ENGINE_CACHE key from qdata.data_ptr(), the shape, and the device. Nothing removes an entry when its storage is freed. The allocator can then give the same address to another same-shape layer after an FSDP2 unshard. In that case _get_engine returns the earlier layer's engine and weights. The same pattern exists in fp8_bwd.py_cache_key / _FP8_CACHE.
This change only adds the comment. The cache behavior is not new. One fix is to keep a weakref to qdata (or its untyped storage) in each entry and check it on lookup. Another fix is to key the cache by a stable parameter identity, such as the module FQN. Do you want me to draft that change, or open an issue to track it?

Pin a Transformers revision that supports the example model types.
The example config uses mistral_large4 and mistral_large4_text, but Transformers 5.21.1 provides the different mistral4 model type. Keep this step, but replace the moving main install with a specific Transformers commit that supports mistral_large4 and mistral_large4_text. The release pin alone is not sufficient.

Update the “Install transformers from main” step to install Transformers from a
specific commit that supports the example’s mistral_large4 and
mistral_large4_text model types, rather than tracking the moving main branch.
Keep the installation step and use a commit pin, not a release-version pin.

The installer pins cut-cross-entropy to @v0.2.1 in axolotl-ai-cloud/ml-cross-entropy. That tag is missing from the remote. Git cannot resolve the reference, so the pip install command that this installer emits fails. Any environment that runs the installer output is affected.
Publish the v0.2.1 tag, or pin a tag that exists. The v0.2.0 tag resolves in the prior review notes, but this check did not confirm it.

Regenerate the configured index for a single-shard merge.
If transformers_weights names an index with one shard, the merge skips that index and regenerates it only when multiple shards exist. The copied config.json still retains transformers_weights. The repository-owned NVFP4 loader then opens that missing index directly, so the single-shard fallback does not apply to this path.
Regenerate the index whenever weight_map is non-empty:

Preserve or restore qdata before non-Marlin consumers access the parameter.
The head extends the existing single-GPU qdata-free path to rank-resident DDP weights. The Marlin backward path uses its cached Marlin weight and scales, but it does not restore the original qdata.
NVFP4Tensor.dequantize() and serialization still consume the NVFP4 qdata component. They can therefore observe the empty (E, N, 0) placeholder after a Marlin forward. Keep qdata for DDP, or restore it before checkpointing, merging, or dequantization. The same lifetime issue already exists for single-GPU execution, but that does not make the newly reachable DDP path safe.

Reject Mistral Large 4 gradient checkpointing with DeepSpeed ZeRO-3.
The generic normalization branch selects use_reentrant=True for ZeRO-3. The Mistral Large 4 branch then changes it to False. The same code states that non-reentrant recomputation with partitioned parameters raises CheckpointError. This combination can therefore fail during training.

mistral_large4_text (which has no loadable model class natively), relied on a
use_mistral_large4_kernels flag for remote configs, and registered a
MistralLarge4TextRMSNorm class that does not exist.
- match the native top-level mistral_large4 type only and drop
use_mistral_large4_kernels; refuse trust_remote_code on an auto_map checkpoint
- register the native MistralLarge4RMSNorm for the fp32 FSDP2 shard group
- anchor the MLA attention-LoRA patch to language_model layers so a bare
q_proj/o_proj target never routes the Pixtral tower through it, and skip
layers that already carry the NVFP4 merge-aware forward
- keep the modelopt NVFP4 checkpoint on its #4226 path: the fused attention
LoRA and fp32 norm sharding default on for block-FP8/bf16 checkpoints and
stay opt-in (mistral_large4_attn_lora_kernel: true) on NVFP4
- move the CPU-only ML4 tests to kernels_cpu so the CPU lane runs them

…raining on transformers 5.22 (#4230)
* feat(kernels): Mistral-Large-4 MLA + MoE LoRA adapter
Mistral-Large-4 is a DeepSeek-V3-style MLA + MoE model shipped as a
FineGrainedFP8 (128x128 block-fp8) trust_remote_code checkpoint. Its MLA is
clean (single q_proj, no gradientless indexer), so the attention projections
are safe to LoRA-adapt.
MistralLarge4Adapter (matches by model_type / use_mistral_large4_kernels):
- registers the MLA RMSNorm classes for the FSDP2 quantized fp32 shard group
- post-PEFT, swaps the MLA attention LoRA layers (q/kv_a/kv_b/o_proj) for a
fused quant-dispatching kernel: bf16 / nf4 / native-fp8 (lora_attn.py) and
nvfp4 / mxfp4 / mxfp8 (lora_lowbit.py)
- patches transformers' FP8Linear with a dequant-autograd forward so LoRA
backprops through the FineGrainedFP8 non-expert linears (fp8_training.py)
The routed experts dispatch through the shared scattermoe grouped path
(moe_grouped_mode: fp8_block keeps them native, nvfp4/mxfp8 requant at load) —
that wiring is model-agnostic and already landed. Registered last in
_all_adapters.
* fix(kernels): run the Mistral Large 4 kernels on transformers' native modeling
The kernels-branch adapter assumed a remote-code checkpoint: it matched
mistral_large4_text (which has no loadable model class natively), relied on a
use_mistral_large4_kernels flag for remote configs, and registered a
MistralLarge4TextRMSNorm class that does not exist.
- move the CPU-only ML4 tests to kernels_cpu so the CPU lane runs them
* fix(kernels): flatten the 4-D kv_b_proj latent in the fused MLA LoRA path
Native MistralLarge4TextAttention.expand_kv calls kv_b_proj on a
[B, 1, S, kv_lora_rank] latent. The generic fused path hands it to LoRA_O,
whose matmul_lora and backward only handle [batch, seq, in], so a LoRA run
targeting kv_b_proj raised "mat1 must be a matrix, got 4-D tensor". kv_b_proj
always takes this path because the checkpoints keep it bf16.
Reshape the input to 3-D for LoRA_O and restore the leading dims; 2-D input
is unsqueezed the same way.
* fix(kernels): keep the native-fp8 MLA LoRA base GEMM on the undropped input
The native-fp8 branch passed drop(x) to _NativeFp8Lora, which feeds the same
tensor to the frozen fp8 base GEMM and the LoRA GEMMs, so with lora_dropout > 0
the base output was computed on dropped activations. It also ignored DoRA
magnitudes and LoRA biases.
Take the native-fp8 kernel only for plain LoRA without active dropout; the rest
goes through LoRA_O, which drops only the LoRA branch.
* test(kernels): Mistral Large 4 LoRA on transformers' native block-FP8 layers
GPU parity on a tiny native MistralLarge4 quantized to 128x128 block FP8
(q/o projections, indexer wq_b, shared experts, dense MLP, routed experts):
transformers 5.22's fp8 forward + dequantized-weight backward against a
dequantized-bf16 forward on every FP8Linear, and the fused MLA attention-LoRA
kernels (native-fp8 and dequant dispatch) against plain PEFT.
* fix(kernels): drop the Mistral Large 4 FP8Linear training patch
patch_fp8_linear_training swapped FP8Linear.forward for a dequantize + F.linear
forward so LoRA could backprop through a FineGrainedFP8 base. transformers
5.22 makes FP8Linear / FP8Experts trainable natively (FP8LinearFunction,
FP8GroupedMatmulFunction: fp8 forward, dequantized-weight backward), and the
patch broke on transformers >= 5.16 anyway: it imported the removed
finegrained_fp8.to_local, so the first FP8Linear forward raised ImportError.
On a tiny native block-FP8 Mistral Large 4 (H100), the native path against
the patch: dX through every covered layer (q/o, indexer wq_b, shared experts,
dense MLP) is bit-identical; the forward differs by ~2.6% per layer, the fp8
GEMM's 1x128 activation quantization.
Adds a LoRA training smoke on that model through the kernels plugin
(scattermoe fp8_block experts + expert LoRA), with and without the fused MLA
attention-LoRA kernels.
* feat(kernels): run Mistral Large 4's block-FP8 experts on moe_grouped_mode auto
The ML4 adapter never set a grouped mode itself; the training smoke now drops
its explicit moe_grouped_mode: fp8_block and asserts auto resolves to it from
the on-load FineGrainedFP8 quantization.
* fix(kernels): leave lora_merge_aware linears on their own forward in the MLA LoRA patch
The patch only skipped the NVFP4 merge-aware marker (_ma_orig_forward). The BF16
lora_merge_aware forward installs before post_model_load, so the patch replaced it on every
q/kv_a/kv_b/o projection, and those layers silently trained plain LoRA instead of the
merged-bf16 objective. Skip any LoRA layer whose forward another integration has already
replaced, the same convention the merge-aware installer uses.
* fix(kernels): route the native-fp8 MLA LoRA through the multi-device DeepGEMM guard
transformers flags FP8Linear._deepgemm_disabled when a model spans more than one CUDA device in
one process, because DeepGEMM's cached kernels are bound to a single context and return garbage
on another device. FP8Linear.forward passes that flag to fp8_linear as allow_deepgemm; the
native-fp8 branch called fp8_linear with the default, so q_proj / o_proj on such a model ran
DeepGEMM anyway. _NativeFp8Lora takes allow_deepgemm (default True, so the DSV4 caller is
unchanged) and the MLA forward passes the base layer's flag.
* fix(kernels): route the low-bit MLA LoRA input gradient through the dropout mask
_LowbitLora fed x_drop to the LoRA GEMMs but added the LoRA branch's input gradient to dX
(the gradient of x) and returned None for x_drop, so with lora_dropout > 0 the earlier
layers received an unmasked LoRA gradient (~20% off at p=0.5). Return it for x_drop, as
LoRA_O does, so autograd carries it back through the dropout op.
* fix(kernels): apply the LoRA B bias in the low-bit MLA LoRA
get_lora_parameters returns the lora_B bias (PEFT lora_bias=True) but _LowbitLora discarded
it, so the low-bit path dropped s * bias from the output and gave the bias no gradient, while
the bf16 / fp8 paths (LoRA_O) apply both. Add it to the forward and return its gradient.
* fix(kernels): validate mistral_large4_attn_quantization
The field was a free string. quantize_attn_bases treats every kind other than nvfp4 / mxfp4
as MXFP8, so a typo such as "fp4" or "nvfp8" passed config validation and silently
quantized the frozen attention bases to MXFP8. Reject anything but none / nvfp4 / mxfp4 /
mxfp8.
* fix(kernels): reject peft_use_dora with mistral_large4_attn_quantization up front
lowbit_lora_forward defers DoRA to the generic LoRA_O path, which cannot dequantize a torchao
NVFP4 / MX base, so a DoRA run with quantized attention bases failed on the first forward
(NVFP4Tensor.add dispatch / "weight-only quant not yet supported") after the whole model had
loaded. Raise in pre_model_load instead, when the fused attention kernel would be on.
* fix(kernels): leave non-float attention bases to PEFT's own forward in the MLA LoRA
The attention kernel defaults on for any adapter: lora run, but _quant_kind classified a
bnb 8-bit base (int8 Int8Params, no quant_state) as bf16, so LoRA_O multiplied the
activations by int8 weights and failed on the first forward. Axolotl's own lora_*_kernel
auto-enable already excludes adapter: lora + load_in_8bit for the same reason. Classify
non-floating weights as "other" and delegate those layers to the original PEFT forward.
* fix(kernels): keep the MLA attention LoRA off under matmul-saving selective checkpointing
The fused attention LoRA adds the adapter delta into the base matmul output with addmm_,
which is the tensor selective checkpointing caches when it saves aten::mm / save_matmul_min_k
or an attention module's matmul. PyTorch then raises "Tensor cached during selective activation
checkpoint has been mutated" on the first backward. The generic lora_*_kernel flags are rejected
by the selective_checkpointing validator for this; the Mistral Large 4 kernel is default-on and
was not. Default it off when selective_checkpointing saves such outputs, and reject an
explicit mistral_large4_attn_lora_kernel: true up front.
* fix(kernels): refuse bitsandbytes and merge-aware bases with mistral_large4_attn_quantization
quantize_attn_bases cast bnb Int8Params storage straight to bf16 without its SCB scales and
requantized the result, so an 8-bit LoRA run with attention quantization silently trained
against garbage attention weights. lora_merge_aware installs its forward before the ML4
post_model_load hook quantizes the bases; the fused patch then skips those linears and the
merge-aware forward fails to add the LoRA delta to the torchao base on the first step.
Reject load_in_8bit, load_in_4bit and lora_merge_aware alongside peft_use_dora in
pre_model_load, and leave integer-quantized bases unquantized (with a warning) for
pre-quantized checkpoints the config flags don't reveal.
* test(kernels): only skip the low-bit MLA LoRA test when torchao lacks the format
* fix(kernels): pass a 0-D per-tensor scale to NVFP4Tensor in the ML4 low-bit attention quantization
* fix(kernels): pass a 0-D per-tensor scale to NVFP4Tensor in the scattermoe NVFP4 requant
* fix(kernels): refuse mistral_large4_attn_quantization when the fused attention LoRA is off
* fix(kernels): keep the DSV4 native-fp8 LoRA base GEMM on the undropped input and apply lora_bias
* perf(kernels): keep the ML4 native-fp8 MLA LoRA on fp8 under lora_dropout and lora_bias
* chore(kernels): drop the always-true dequantize guard in the ML4 low-bit LoRA
* test(kernels): pin the language_model.layers anchor in the ML4 vision-tower test
* refactor(kernels): type mistral_large4_attn_quantization as a Literal
* docs(kernels): correct the ML4 indexer, low-bit, and fp32-shard comments
* fix(kernels): let ML4 low-bit attention LoRA errors propagate instead of falling back
* perf(kernels): read the base model config once per process in kernel adapter detection
* docs: document the Mistral Large 4 fused attention LoRA config keys
* feat(kernels): warn that lora_target_linear adapts the ML4 gradientless indexer
