Description

Upgrades transformers from 5.20.1 to 5.21.1.

  • 5.21.1, not 5.21.0. 5.21.0 normalizes the RoPE settings as soon as rope_scaling is assigned, even while the config is still being built. A config that sets rope_scaling before rope_theta, the usual trust_remote_code pattern, loses rope_theta and crashes at RoPE init. 5.21.1 waits until construction has finished.
  • DeepSeek-V4 NVFP4-aware FP8 quantizer.
    • 5.21 now calls hf_quantizer.update_weight_conversions(weight_conversions, model). Our NVFP4MoEFP8HfQuantizer override took only weight_conversions, so it raised a TypeError.
    • That quantizer is swapped in whenever use_dsv4_kernels and use_scattermoe are both set, and it covers every fp8 checkpoint loaded afterwards, so plain DSV4 FP8 runs broke too.
    • The override now forwards the extra arguments, which keeps 5.20.x working as well.
    • The $ anchors on its expert converters stay. Without them, 5.21's base update_weight_conversions rewrites the NVFP4 expert converters into Fp8Dequantize + weight_scale_inv converters.
  • New CPU test. tests/integrations/kernels_cpu/test_nvfp4_fp8_quantizer.py runs a tiny DeepSeek-V4 NVFP4 meta model through get_model_conversion_mapping with the quantizer.

Upstream behaviour changes that reach Axolotl without code changes here

  1. Experts are now split across ranks under tensor parallelism (🚨 MoE: shard the experts in every TP/EP plan, and test for it huggingface/transformers#49206).
    • This is new for qwen2_moe, DeepSeek-V4, Jamba, Nemotron-H, the GraniteMoE family and LFM2-MoE. It applies to full fine-tunes with tensor_parallel_size > 1.
    • Nothing in Axolotl prevents ScatterMoE/SonicMoE from running in that mode, so this needs a GPU check.
  2. Input embeddings are now split across ranks under tensor parallelism for every model (🚨 TP: give embeddings their own style, shard input embeddings by default, and shard widths that don't divide by the TP size huggingface/transformers#49570). For untied models with tensor_parallel_size > 1:
    • our adapter check now rejects LoRA on embed_tokens;
    • adding tokens resizes an embedding that is already split;
    • tied-embedding LoRA raises in lora_tying.py.
  3. Jamba's router is no longer an nn.Linear (🚨 MoE: shard the experts in every TP/EP plan, and test for it huggingface/transformers#49206).
    • lora_target_linear: true silently stops putting LoRA on router, and QLoRA stops quantizing it.
    • Jamba adapters trained on ≤5.20.1 with lora_target_linear won't load through PEFT for inference or the standard merge.
  4. Chat templates treat thinking and reasoning_content as the same field (Alias thinking -> reasoning_content huggingface/transformers#49535).
    • The default SFT path renders the same as before.
    • Output changes only where the reasoning key differs from what the template reads, e.g. split_thinking (default key reasoning_content) with a gpt-oss template. That reasoning was dropped before; it is now rendered and trained.
  5. Smaller changes:

Checked and unaffected:

  • modelopt NVFP4 MoE loading. quant_method: modelopt is not a transformers quantizer. A tiny synthetic checkpoint loads bit-identically on 5.20.1 and 5.21.
  • Our expert-parallel plugin. It does its own dispatch and rejects transformers' EP.
  • The source-patched Trainer methods. They are byte-identical in 5.21.
  • Our transformers imports. All 273 in src/axolotl resolve the same way on 5.20.1 and 5.21.0.

Motivation and Context

Maintainer-directed. This keeps Axolotl on the current transformers release. It started as a check of how 5.21 affects loading modelopt NVFP4 MoE checkpoints, and that check surfaced the DSV4 quantizer break.

How has this been tested?

Run locally on macOS (Python 3.11, torch 2.14.0, torchao 0.16). An uncommitted shim lets the triton-gated CPU tests import and stubs sys.monitoring:

  • 19 passed on both 5.21.1 and 5.21.0: tests/integrations/kernels_cpu/ (both files) plus tests/integrations/kernels/test_nvfp4_linear_dequant.py.
  • The break and the fix: the old override raises TypeError: ... takes 2 positional arguments but 3 were given on 5.21 through get_model_conversion_mapping. The new test covers that call.
  • CPU-lane collection: -m "not gpu and not slow and not distributed_cpu" --ignore=tests/integrations/kernels/ collects both kernels_cpu files.
  • pre-commit is clean on the changed files.
  • Targeted tests during the upgrade review, against 5.20.1 and 5.21.0:
    • 129 targeted model-patch tests pass on both versions;
    • LoRA kernel patterns match identically on 20 attention classes;
    • a tiny Jamba model confirms the router change.

Not run:

  • the full CPU suite, which CI covers;
  • any GPU, multi-GPU, tensor-parallel, FSDP, NVFP4 or FP8 kernel path. That includes the TP expert and embedding sharding changes above, and a real DSV4 checkpoint load;
  • torchao 0.18, which the CPU lane installs.

Types of changes

  • Dependency upgrade
  • Bug fix (non-breaking)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved compatibility when loading DeepSeek-V4 NVFP4 expert weights through the FP8 quantizer. Expert weight and scale keys are now mapped separately, helping prevent scale values from being treated as weights.
    • Improved compatibility with different base quantizer implementations when converting expert weights.

5.21.1 rather than 5.21.0: 5.21.0 normalizes RoPE settings as soon as
`rope_scaling` is assigned, even mid-construction, so a config that sets it
before `rope_theta` (the usual trust_remote_code pattern) loses `rope_theta`
and crashes at RoPE init. 5.21.1 waits until the config is built.

transformers 5.21 calls `hf_quantizer.update_weight_conversions(weight_conversions,
model)`, so the NVFP4-aware FP8 quantizer's override raised a TypeError for every
fp8 checkpoint once installed (use_dsv4_kernels + use_scattermoe). It now forwards
the extra arguments, which keeps 5.20.x working too.

The `$` anchors on the expert converters stay: besides keeping `.weight` off the
`.weight_scale*` keys on 5.20.x, they stop 5.21's base `update_weight_conversions`
from rewriting the NVFP4 expert converters into Fp8Dequantize + `weight_scale_inv`
converters.

Adds a CPU test (tests/integrations/kernels_cpu/, which the CPU lanes collect) that
runs a tiny DeepSeek-V4 NVFP4 meta model through `get_model_conversion_mapping`
with the quantizer.

Walkthrough

The Transformers pin changes from 5.20.1 to 5.21.1. The NVFP4 quantizer updates expert weight and scale key conversions, and new integration tests check the conversion mappings and converter properties.

Changes: NVFP4 expert key conversion

When this integration is active, ordinary FP8 checkpoints with expert layers may not load their expert scale tensors correctly. Make the converter rewrite apply only to NVFP4 expert models, or otherwise preserve the base FP8 conversion, before merging.

Preserve base conversions for ordinary FP8 experts.

install_nvfp4_fp8_quantizer() replaces the global FP8 quantizer for all quant_method: fp8 checkpoints. The override rebuilds every expert converter, even when the model has no NVFP4 experts.

For an ordinary FP8 expert converter, .weight$ makes the base method derive weight$ instead of weight, so it does not add the weight_scale_inv companion conversion. The added .weight_scale$ converter does not match ordinary weight_scale_inv keys. Pass the original converters to super() when the model has no NVFP4 experts, and rebuild them only for NVFP4 models.

line 342:
Update the conversion flow in install_nvfp4_fp8_quantizer so models without
NVFP4 experts pass the original converters to super().update_weight_conversions
unchanged; rebuild converters only when the model contains NVFP4 experts,
preserving the base weight_scale_inv companion conversion for ordinary FP8
experts.
