Yarn Berry projects could get a stale or rejected yarn.lock from aube. This fixes both reports.

What changed

Reproduction from the issues:

echo '{"name":"t","private":true,"dependencies":{"hono":"4.6.0"},"devDependencies":{"typescript":"5.5.4"}}' > package.json
corepack yarn@4 install --mode=update-lockfile
sed -i 's/"hono": "4.6.0"/"hono": "4.6.20"/' package.json
aube install --lockfile-only --ignore-scripts

Before: "Lockfile is up to date", yarn.lock unchanged. After: hono is re-resolved to 4.6.20, __metadata stays version: 10, the t@workspace:. entry and typescript's bin: and compat-patch blocks are preserved, and yarn install --immutable passes.

 • Drift detection: Berry and Classic direct deps now record the manifest range as their specifier, as the npm parser does. The drift check skipped importers whose deps all had no specifier.
 • Writer: __metadata version and cacheKey are re-stamped from the parsed file (defaults stay 8 / 10c0 for graphs not parsed from Berry). The root workspace block is written. bin: is parsed and written. Versions, checksums and bin paths are written bare, unscoped keys unquoted, and blocks sorted by header like Yarn.
 • Compat patches: skipped builtin<compat/…> blocks are kept verbatim on the owning package and re-emitted. They are dropped when that package's version changes, because their hash= can't be recomputed.

Limitations

 • A package aube resolves fresh gets no checksum: (Yarn's is a hash of its own zip archive). In my reproduction yarn install --immutable still passed.
 • Berry conditions: and dependenciesMeta: fields, and non-root workspace blocks in monorepos, are still not round-tripped.

Validation

Unit tests cover a byte-for-byte v10 round trip with a compat patch and drift detection after a manifest bump. cargo test, cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings and cargo fmt --check pass; bats was not run.

Rewriting a Berry lockfile with an unusual conditions value could change its meaning. This is a narrow edge case that is easy to fix. The main Berry round-trip and drift-detection behavior looks sound.

Explanation

The changes remain related to #1794 and #1795. Metadata propagation, workspace and bin: handling, conditions preservation, YAML formatting, compat-block preservation, direct-dependency specifiers, Classic parser alignment, Bun metadata filtering, and supporting tests implement Berry lockfile round-tripping or drift detection. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy #1795. Berry direct dependencies record root workspace ranges, drift checks detect a manifest bump, and skipped builtin<compat/...> blocks are preserved and re-emitted. Tests cover these cases. The changes address most of #1794 by preserving Berry metadata, the root workspace block, existing checksums, updated dependencies, bin: maps, and Yarn-style scalar formatting. The writer emits no checksum: for a newly resolved package because it only writes pkg.yarn_checksum when the parsed package already has one. This leaves the explicit #1794 checksum requirement unmet.

Resolution

Generate or retain a Yarn-compatible checksum: for each newly resolved Berry package when possible. If a required checksum cannot be produced, fail the operation with a non-zero result instead of claiming a complete immutable-compatible rewrite. Add a regression test for a changed dependency that verifies the checksum and yarn install --immutable acceptance.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no blocking issue remains from the earlier findings or the latest changes.

Summary

The PR preserves more of Yarn Berry’s lockfile data and detects changed manifest ranges.

 • Berry lockfiles keep their Yarn details when aube rewrites them.
 • Yarn dependency ranges now reveal manifest changes.
 • Bun lockfiles skip Berry-only bookkeeping fields.

Reject the lockfile write when a preserved Berry compat block is lost.

The parser stores each skipped compat block under the exact name@version owner. After manifest drift, overlay_metadata_from copies metadata only when that exact key exists in the new graph and silently skips missing keys. The writer then writes the new graph without the old block. This can report success while violating issue #1795 and producing a lockfile that yarn install --immutable rejects.

Track preserved blocks as a separate preservation obligation during graph reconstruction. Return an error before atomic_write_lockfile when any block cannot be emitted. Changing the parser’s unmatched-owner branch does not fix this case because the old owner exists during parsing; the owner changes only after resolution.

Write root optional dependencies in Yarn’s lockfile form.

If the root manifest has an optional dependency, workspace_block writes it under optionalDependencies. Yarn writes it under dependencies with dependenciesMeta marking it optional. Yarn therefore changes this block during install, so yarn install --immutable rejects the lockfile. Emit Yarn’s dependency and metadata fields instead. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Preserve Berry package conditions during rewrites.

When manifest drift triggers a Berry rewrite, parse_berry_str drops each package's conditions, and write_berry emits no replacement. Yarn treats a missing condition as compatible with every host. A conditional optional package such as conditions: os=darwin & cpu=arm64 can therefore become eligible on an unsupported host instead of being skipped.

Preserve the value through extra_meta and emit it in the rewritten Berry block.

Instruction counts

Nothing was compared, and so nothing was gated. No series appears on both sides: either the base has no measurements recorded, or the two were measured on different runner classes, which are deliberately not comparable — counts shift between machine types by more than a real regression does.

New, nothing to compare against: graph on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-aube-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, install on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-aube-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, run on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-aube-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, startup on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-aube-rust1.97.1-img5263c143, tree on jdx-perf-v1-ubuntu24.04-x64-aube-rust1.97.1-img5263c143

Only instruction counts gate. Wall clock is shown for context — on identical hardware it moves 4-20% run to run.

Measured by tak — instruction-counted CLI benchmarks, stored in this repository's git notes.
