aube install --force is documented as a forced reinstall, but it only cleared the install state and re-resolved. The linker still saw existing node_modules/.aube/<pkg> entries and treated them as cache hits, so a package file you had deleted stayed deleted and the command printed "Already up to date". pnpm restores the file. Reported in #1777.

Before / after

aube install is-number@7.0.0 --disable-global-virtual-store
rm node_modules/is-number/index.js
aube install --force # before: "Already up to date", file still missing
                          # after:  file restored

The same applies with the global virtual store (the default outside CI).

What changed

  • New Linker::with_force, plumbed from install --force.
  • Per-project virtual store: --force removes and rewrites every .aube/<dep_path> entry (including file: tarball entries).
  • Global virtual store: --force rebuilds each shared entry in a staging directory and swaps it into place, rolling back if the swap fails. Other projects that share the entry get the repaired copy too, and the shared path is never left half-written. A concurrent reader can see the entry briefly absent during the rename pair.
  • node-linker=hoisted already rewrote every package on each install, so it needed no change; a test now guards it.
  • --force help text and CLI docs now say it re-materializes linked packages.

Validation

  • New linker unit test covers both virtual-store modes, including that a plain relink still trusts the existing entry and that no staging dirs are left behind.
  • Three new bats tests (per-project store, GVS, hoisted). The first two fail without the fix.
  • cargo test, cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --check, and the install/hoisted/frozen/GVS bats files pass.

📝 Walkthrough

install --force now reaches the linker and triggers linked-package re-materialization. Existing virtual-store entries are replaced with rollback handling. Tests cover deleted-file restoration across supported store and linker modes, and CLI help describes the behavior.

Changes: Forced install behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Pass force mode through linking
crates/aube/src/commands/install/{args.rs,link.rs,mod.rs}, crates/aube-linker/src/{builder.rs,lib.rs}
The install command passes force to the linker. The linker stores the option and classifies fresh entries as stale in force mode.
Invalidate existing materializations
crates/aube-linker/src/link.rs, crates/aube-linker/src/materialize.rs
Force mode removes or reclassifies local, portal, global, and per-project registry entries before cache reuse. Removal is checked for incomplete deletion.
Replace entries and validate restoration
crates/aube-linker/src/materialize.rs, crates/aube-linker/src/tests.rs, test/install.bats
Force mode replaces existing entries and restores the previous entry when placement fails and rollback is possible. Tests cover deleted-file restoration across virtual-store and linker modes.
Document forced installation
crates/aube/src/commands/install/args.rs, aube.usage.kdl, docs/cli/{commands.json,install.md}
CLI help and documentation describe package re-materialization, deleted-file restoration, and global virtual-store rebuilding and replacement.

install --force now repairs deleted package files in both store modes, including shared git and tarball entries. In the per-project store, however, a forced install removes each existing package before rebuilding it. If the rebuild fails, that package is left missing from node_modules. Forced installs also do not repair package files that were edited in place when hardlinking is used, even though one internal description says they do. Address the per-project replacement, or explicitly accept it, before merging.

Apply force to globally shared local sources.

For a git or remote-tarball dependency in the global virtual store, an intact project symlink makes state Fresh. This branch returns before ensure_in_virtual_store, even when Linker::force is true. A deleted file inside that shared entry therefore remains missing after install --force. Apply forced_entry_state here, as the registry paths do in crates/aube-linker/src/link.rs, Lines 329 and 1030.
