Running aube install in a project that sits below a settings-only aube-workspace.yaml / pnpm-workspace.yaml (no packages:) installed the ancestor root instead of the current directory. pnpm installs the subdirectory alone, and --ignore-workspace was accepted by aube but did nothing. Discussion: #1778

Behavior

# ./aube-workspace.yaml (no `packages:`)
allowBuilds:
  esbuild: true
cd sub # has its own package.json, not a workspace member
aube install # before: installed ./ ; now: installs ./sub on its own
  • A workspace root (yaml or package.json#workspaces) now only claims a directory when the project there is a member: the root itself, or matched by packages: / workspaces (negated globs honored). With no patterns, only the root is a member. Non-members use their own nearest package.json.
  • aube install --ignore-workspace now skips workspace-root discovery so the nearest project is used. It is documented in the CLI reference (previously hidden).
  • cd member && aube install still resolves to the workspace root, and a member with its own yaml still anchors on itself.

Notes

The check lives in find_workspace_root, so every command that discovers the root (install, patch, list, why, update, add, run, ...) gets the same answer; none are intentionally left out. Member lists are cached per process. If a root's workspace file fails to parse, the root still claims the directory so the error surfaces from the normal path.

Tested with unit tests in dirs.rs (member, non-member, settings-only root, package.json#workspaces, negated glob, ignore-workspace) and bats tests reproducing the discussion and covering --ignore-workspace.

📝 Walkthrough

Workspace discovery now requires the nearest project to be a declared workspace member. The visible --ignore-workspace option disables workspace discovery and makes installation operate on the nearest project only.

Changes: Workspace Discovery

Layer / File(s) Summary
Membership-aware workspace discovery
crates/aube/src/dirs.rs, test/workspace_member_install_walks_up.bats
Discovery checks workspace membership, caches membership results, applies the rules to YAML roots, and covers settings-only roots, package patterns, exclusions, and ignored discovery.
CLI option and installation behavior
aube.usage.kdl, crates/aube/src/lib.rs, crates/aube/src/commands/install/workspace.rs, docs/cli/commands.json, docs/cli/index.md, test/workspace_member_install_walks_up.bats
The visible --ignore-workspace option sets process-wide discovery state and documents standalone project behavior. Installation skips workspace packages when the option is active. Regression tests cover nested projects, workspace members, and workspace roots.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no new actionable issues were found.

Summary

The PR installs non-member projects independently and makes --ignore-workspace skip member discovery.

Since the previous review:

  • Workspace roots now claim only projects listed as their members.
  • --ignore-workspace lets commands use the current project alone.

Both earlier findings are addressed: ignored installs use a root-only plan, and a later normal install cannot reuse that plan’s saved settings hash.

Stop traversal at nested workspace boundaries.

When a project is not a member of the nearest nested workspace, both helpers skip that boundary and continue upward. An outer workspace can then claim the project. Installation locking can use the outer root, and find_workspace_yaml_root can select the outer workspace's catalogs.

The nested marker is documented as a hard boundary. Stop the walk for non-members in both helpers.

Update both workspace traversal helpers so a nested workspace marker is a hard

apply the same break behavior to the corresponding ignore_workspace and
non-member cases in the other helper. Preserve returning the directory for valid

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply --ignore-workspace to the nested CLI.

The recursive argv already retains --ignore-workspace through args.args. After parsing that argv, the nested dispatch must update the process-wide workspace setting before running the nested command. Otherwise, install can select the workspace root.

After parsing the nested CLI with Cli::parse_from_argv, call
crate::dirs::set_ignore_workspace using nested.ignore_workspace before
compute_effective_filter and nested command dispatch, so recursive commands such
as install honor the propagated --ignore-workspace setting.
