Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🟠 High · up to The new staging check command can report success after scanner failures, duplicate its findings, mishandle local-server startup errors, and expose files outside the intended site root through symlinks. Because this can produce false release checks and a file-access security issue, the PR is not merge-ready until these issues are fixed. Suggested reviewers: Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

🌐 Web query:
For supported Node.js versions, confirm whether node:fs/promises stat()andnode:fs createReadStream() follow symbolic links, and identify the documented approach for preventing a static file server from serving symlink targets outside its root.
💡 Result:
In Node.js, the behavior regarding symbolic links for the specified file system methods is as follows: - node:fs/promises stat: The stat method follows symbolic links [1][2][3]. It returns an fs.Stats object for the file or directory that the symbolic link points to, rather than the link itself [1][2]. If you need information about the symbolic link itself, you should use lstat [1][2][3]. - node:fs createReadStream: This method follows symbolic links by default [4]. When it opens a file, it resolves the path provided; if that path is a symbolic link, the underlying operating system opens the target file [4]. To prevent a static file server from serving files via symlink targets that exist outside the intended root directory, the documented and industry-standard approach is to resolve the target path to its absolute, canonical form before serving it [5]. Relying on simple lexical string comparisons (e.g., checking if a path starts with the root folder) is insufficient because it does not account for symlinks that can traverse outside the root [5]. The correct implementation pattern is: 1. Resolve the absolute path of the root directory using fs.realpathSync (or its promise-based equivalent) to ensure you have the canonical root [5]. 2. Resolve the absolute, real path of the user-requested file (the candidate) using fs.realpath or fs.realpathSync [6][5]. 3. Verify that the resolved candidate path is a descendant of the resolved root path [5]. This check must be performed using robust path comparison (e.g., ensuring the candidate string starts with the canonical root string followed by a path separator) rather than naive substring matching, to prevent directory traversal attacks (e.g., escaping via /root-evil) [5]. Popular middleware, such as express.static and other mature static file-serving libraries, implement these protections internally [4][5]. It is strongly recommended to use these existing, audited solutions rather than hand-rolling file-serving logic, as correctly handling path resolution, symlinks, and edge cases like encoded traversal sequences is complex and prone to security vulnerabilities [5].

Resolve symlinks before serving files.
stat() and createReadStream() follow symbolic links. A symlink inside root can expose a file outside root after the lexical path check succeeds. Resolve the site root and selected file with realpath() after directory-index handling, then reject files outside the resolved site root. Add a fixture with a symlink from built to a file in a parent directory.

🌐 Web query:
For supported Node.js versions, confirm how node:http Server.listen()reports bind and resource-allocation failures when the caller awaits a promise that rejects from the servererror event.
💡 Result:
In supported versions of Node.js, the standard node:http Server.listen() method does not return a promise [1][2][3]. Consequently, awaiting a call to server.listen() will not behave as a promise-based mechanism for catching bind or resource-allocation failures, such as EADDRINUSE [2][4][5]. Because server.listen() is designed to remain backward compatible with its callback-based and event-based architecture, attempting to await it will effectively await the return value of the method, which is the server instance itself (as it supports chaining). This does not trigger, reject, or resolve based on the success or failure of the underlying network operation [1][6]. To properly handle errors when using server.listen(), you must rely on: 1. The 'error' event: You should register an error listener on the server instance before calling listen() to capture bind or allocation failures [4][5]. 2. The events.once utility: A common pattern for promisifying this behavior is to use node:events to listen for both the 'listening' and 'error' events simultaneously [5][3]. Recent developments in Node.js have introduced experimental promise-based APIs (e.g., node:net/promises) intended to provide a native, promise-aware way to handle these lifecycle events [3]. In environments where these are available, node:net/promises.listen() can be used to achieve the desired promise-based rejection behavior, where the promise correctly rejects upon bind or allocation failure [3]. Top results: [2][4][5][3]

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Use JSON-only scanner output for check.
At Line 302, format: 'both' makes runMultiDomainScan write its full human report to stdout. Line 314 then calls printFindings, which writes the same findings one per line. The command therefore duplicates findings and breaks its one-line reporting contract.
Use format: 'json'. Keep printFindings as the only finding formatter. Add an assertion that the injected scanner receives format: 'json'.

Do not convert scanner failures to success.
At Line 319, non-strict mode converts EXIT_RUNTIME_ERROR and EXIT_INVALID_ARGS from the scanner to EXIT_OK. Non-strict mode must ignore findings only. It must still fail when navigation, browser startup, report writing, or scanner option validation fails.
Return EXIT_OK only when the verdict is EXIT_VIOLATIONS and strict is false. Add a non-strict regression test where the injected scanner returns EXIT_RUNTIME_ERROR.

Trying this tool has required downloading ninety-five megabytes of a browser engine that is, on most machines, already installed. For a check someone runs once out of curiosity, that is the difference between being tried and being deleted. A channel was already accepted, which finds Chrome or Edge where Playwright knows to look. It does not find the browser a Linux distribution installs: Debian's `chromium` package lands at a path no channel refers to, so a container with a perfectly good browser still asked for the download. Naming the binary outright covers that, and covers anything else someone has. Verified in a container with nothing in it: Node, the distribution's chromium, these packages. No browser downloaded, thirty-six megabytes installed, the check runs. Signed-off-by: Alexander Brichkin (Agonist Development AB) <git@ariada.org>
