merge dev into next

Step 1 of #6576. After this we can merge next back into dev. This PR's merge commit will turn into the LTS 1.x branch.

The trickiest part here is to apply the changes from #6570 to the connectors code. Basically it's just about changing some HashMap<Valid<Schema>> types to the new SubgraphSchemas type.
