Within this FAQ section I want to try and address some of the questions that I have come across or that have otherwise reached me.
Q: On Windows I cannot spot a difference in vertical line height between any of the three Meslo LG variants. How come?
A: In my own Windows testing I found proper rendering of the Meslo LG variants seemed to vary based on exact type of Windows OS used, software used and font engine used (for example: ClearType or not).
On Windows XP SP3 with ClearType activated any Meslo variant did tend to produce similar results to the Mac version albeit at smaller font sizes (see also next question). On Windows Vista 32 and 64bit (SP1 both) I was able to use all Meslo variants with the Python IDLE Gui but the line height values were ignored completely. Using VisualStudio Express on Windows XP again I was able to get very similar results to how Xcode on the Mac changes line gap based on what LG variant was used.
I am still investigating the exact calculations needed to produce a Meslo LG family that will change line height similarily on Windows as it does on Mac OS X. I do have the impression though, that how applications approach font rendering on Windows varies more than it does on Mac OS X.
Q: On Windows Meslo appears slightly taller. Is this on purpose?
A: Again, during my own testing I found that 8pt on Windows equals 11pt on the Mac. 11pt is the nominal intended size for Meslo. My personal recommendation for Windows would be to use a smaller point size and to enable ClearType.
Q: Can I use Meslo with ... ?
A: As for ... I don't know (yet). You may have to try it out. I do know however that for the time being there appears to be a problem with an application called SecureCRT which does not recognise Meslo as a monospaced font. (see also: issue 2)
To conclude here's a small non-exhaustive list of applications that I have used Meslo with:
- Mac: every application that uses Fonts in a way or another worked for me.
- Windows: Visual C# Express 2010, Visual Studio Express 2008, Wordpad, Notepad, EditPlus 3, Python IDLE 2.7.
