Part of #743, now that #793 fixed #767. Image renders the <img> inside .image itself, and it used to write class="" on that <img> when it wasn't rounded, which is why .image stayed a family converted by hand. It writes no class attribute now, so an .image converts together with its <img>, the way .select does with its <select>:

<figure className="image is-128x128 mb-2">
  <img src="/avatar.png" alt="Avatar" className="is-rounded" />
</figure>
// becomes
<Image as="figure" size="128x128" mb="2" src="/avatar.png" alt="Avatar" isRounded />

How it decides

  • Image puts src and alt on its <img> and nothing else, and keeps its own attributes on the wrapper. That's the breadcrumb's shape (attributesOn: 'element') with one difference, so the absorb spec gains childProps: the child attributes the target takes as props of its own and writes back on the child. The transform already moves the child's attributes onto the component in its place, so only the planner needed to learn it.
  • Any other attribute on the <img> (loading, width, a key) or any class but is-rounded keeps both as markup with an attr TODO, and so does anything but a single <img> inside (children:Image).
  • The fixed sizes and is-square become size. A ratio (is-4by3) stays a class, because size would add has-ratio beside it and change the markup. as covers the <figure> and <p> Bulma's own examples use.

The other surfaces

  • MCP (feat(bestax-mcp)): lookup_bulma_classes names Image and says the <img>'s src and alt move onto it.
  • ESLint (fix(eslint-plugin)): the rule reports .image with the converts message.
  • Skill and docs: an .image row in the component map and the absorb section, the size and is-rounded rows in the prop map, .image beside .select and .breadcrumb in the unmappables' spread, attr, children and dynamic-class sections, and a line in the migration guide. The family:image recipe is gone.

Checked

  • The render truth test sweeps .image like the other absorbing roots, now rendering a void child without text inside, and adds a pass giving the <img> each of childProps. The props e2e typechecks those, self-closing as the transform writes them.
  • Image cases in the absorbed fixture pair and a media object's avatar in the kitchen sink render the same before and after, including a ratio kept as a class and an <img> with loading kept as markup.
  • pnpm all passes locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Bulma .image wrappers containing an <img> can now migrate to a single Image component, carrying over the image source and alt text.
    • Supported fixed-size and square modifiers map to the component’s size setting, and rounded styling is preserved. Ratio classes remain as classes.
    • Conversion preserves the wrapper’s supported element options and attributes. Images with additional child attributes that cannot be represented are not absorbed into the component.
  • Documentation
    • Updated migration guidance to describe image conversion and clarify which image modifiers are mapped or remain as classes.

Image renders the <img> inside .image itself, from src and alt, and since
#793 it renders that <img> with no class attribute when it isn't rounded. So
an .image converts together with its only <img> the way .select does with
its <select>: the <img>'s src and alt become Image's props, is-rounded on it
becomes isRounded, and the .image keeps its own attributes. Any other
attribute or class on the <img> keeps both as markup.

A fixed size becomes size. A ratio stays a class, since size would add
has-ratio as well. The absorb spec gains childProps for the child
attributes a target takes as its own props.
…om its <img>

lookup_bulma_classes named .image a family to convert by hand. It now names
Image, and says the <img>'s src and alt move onto it and is-rounded becomes
isRounded.

deep-review: fresh

Keep it narrow: read the three commits one at a time with git show, not the whole PR diff at once.

Priority: absorb() in bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/plan.ts with the new childProps, checked against bulma-ui's Image.tsx. Is every conversion it allows really identical markup (the <img>'s attributes, its class, the wrapper's tag and classes), and is every attribute or class that would be lost refused? Then the .image entry's size and ratio handling in class-map.ts.

Walkthrough

The migration mapping now converts eligible Bulma .image wrappers and their <img> children to bestax Image. The planner supports child attributes consumed as component props. Tests, fixtures, and documentation cover the conversion and its limits.

Changes

Image migration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Child attribute absorption contract
bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/class-map.ts, bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/plan.ts, bestax-mcp/src/bulma-classes.ts
Absorbs can declare child attributes that the target accepts as props. The planner permits those attributes and refuses other child attributes. The MCP explanation describes the declared props.
Image mapping and conversion examples
bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/class-map.ts, bestax-mcp/data/bulma-classes.json, bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/__testfixtures__/*, bestax-migrate/fixtures/bulma-classes-kitchen-sink/src/layout.tsx, bestax-mcp/data/skills.json
The .image mapping accepts div, figure, or p wrappers and absorbs an eligible <img>. It maps supported size and square modifiers to size, maps is-rounded to isRounded, and leaves ratio modifiers as classes. Fixtures show converted and unconverted image markup.
Conversion validation and guidance
bestax-migrate/e2e/*, bestax-mcp/src/__tests__/server.test.ts, docs/docs/guides/getting-started/migration/bulma-classes.md, skills/bestax-migrate/references/bulma-classes/*
Tests cover void children, declared child props, and image modifier lookup. The migration guide and references describe conversion rules and cases that remain markup.

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The independently affected scope is source files a user elects to migrate and consumers of the resulting code or lookup guidance. The inspected changes do not add a service dependency or privileged execution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The MCP lookup formats the static childProps mapping as explanatory text. Its inspected server entrypoint bounds lookup input and returns text rather than invoking a privileged migration operation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Refusing unsupported image shapes before mutation limits accidental output changes, but the inspected transform alone does not prove recovery behavior after a caller's interrupted file write.

The runs before this one were stopped by the runner shutting down partway through ("The runner has received a shutdown signal"), which looks like the VM running out of resources. So keep the machine light: don't run pnpm all, pnpm build, a Storybook build or a whole package's test suite. CI already runs those on this head. If you want evidence from a test, run one file, for example pnpm -C bestax-migrate test -- src/sources/bulma-classes/__tests__/plan.test.ts.

Read the commits one at a time with git show, not the whole PR diff at once. The priority is the same as the earlier steer on this PR: does every conversion the change allows render exactly the markup it replaces, and is everything else refused?

Every run on this PR has been stopped by the runner shutting down at about the 20-minute mark, whatever it was doing, so this review has to finish well inside that. Keep it to the core and post what you have by about 15 minutes:

  • absorb() in bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/plan.ts, the childProps branch, against bulma-ui's Image.tsx.
  • The image entry in bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/class-map.ts (sizes, the ratio left as a class, as).

Skip the MCP, ESLint, docs and skill commits, and don't run builds or test suites: CI runs them on this head. Read with git show <sha> -- <path> for just those files.

Deep review — 0 blocking · 1 advisory

Scoped to the steer: the childProps branch of absorb() in bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/plan.ts, read against bulma-ui Image.tsx (commit d4f3673f only; no builds or tests run).

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🔵 Advisory Robustness childProps are absorbed straight onto the written element and never enter attributes, so the downstream untypedAttrs / numberAttrs / defaults / dangerouslySetInnerHTML / children checks never see them, and nothing holds childProps to a subset of ownProps. Harmless for Image, which declares none of those and lists src/alt in ownProps; latent for the next target that uses the spec. bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/plan.ts:658

Does every allowed conversion render the same <img> and wrapper?

Source Emitted Image renders Same?
<figure class="image is-128x128 mb-2"><img src alt class="is-rounded"> <Image as="figure" size="128x128" mb="2" src alt isRounded /> <figure class="image is-128x128 mb-2"><img class="is-rounded" src alt> ✅
<p class="image is-64x64"><img src={thumb} alt=""> <Image as="p" size="64x64" src={thumb} alt="" /> <p class="image is-64x64"><img src={thumb} alt=""> ✅ alt="" survives, so a decorative image stays decorative
<figure class="image is-4by3"><img …> <Image as="figure" className="is-4by3" …/> <figure class="image is-4by3"><img …> ✅ ratio kept as a class, so no has-ratio is invented
<img … loading="lazy"> refused, TODO markup kept ✅
  • No class attribute when not rounded. Image writes classNames({[roundedClass]: isRounded}) || undefined (Image.tsx:119), so an absorbed <img> without is-rounded renders bare — exactly what the conversion assumes. The || rather than ?? is load-bearing and correct here: classNames returns "", not null.
  • is-square is a Bulma ratio, yet maps to size — I chased this as a suspected divergence and it is not one. Image adds has-ratio only when size.includes("by") (Image.tsx:95) and defaults Tag the same way (Image.tsx:107), so size="square" emits exactly image is-square on the source tag it came from. Class list and tag both match the input.
  • transform.ts really does carry src/alt up. absorb() returns attributes: facts.attributes (element-only), and the child src/alt never appear there — I checked that this is not a loss: elementPath.replace(child) makes the child the written node and prepends the element attributes to it (transform.ts:1160-1164), so the absorbed props ride along on the child node itself.

Is everything that would be lost refused?

  • Child classes — every token must be in spec.modifiers (is-rounded only); anything else refuses with the token named.
  • Child attributes — .find(found => !taken.includes(found)) covers all non-taken attributes, and attributesBesides (transform.ts:518) keeps ref and key in that map, so <img ref={r}> refuses rather than silently landing a dead ref on a non-forwarding React.FC. This was my strongest candidate finding; it is closed.
  • Element-side src/alt collision, which would duplicate the attribute after the merge, is caught by the ownProps loop at plan.ts:307, which now lists both.

Overall: The childProps branch is sound and narrowly scoped — it widens the attributesOn: "element" gate by exactly the two attributes Image writes back, and the .find() shape keeps the refusal set total rather than enumerated. The riskiest part is not this branch but the invariant it now leans on: Image must keep rendering its <img> with no class when it is not rounded (#793), and must keep gating has-ratio on by. A human should focus on whether childProps deserves a rules.test.ts invariant (row 1) before a second target adopts it.

Residual risk:

  • Child ref/key reaching a component that drops them — refuted: both stay in child.attributes, so both refuse.
  • Text or a comment beside the <img> being deleted by elementPath.replace(child) — refuted: soleChild (transform.ts:859) requires exactly one JSXElement and no undropped text or comment.
  • <img> with a spread or a computed className — refuted: both refuse ahead of the childProps branch; an empty className refuses too, because class="" would be lost.
  • srcSet / retina divergence — refuted: isRetina is never emitted, and srcSet is not in childProps, so an <img srcSet> refuses.
  • <img></img> becoming <Image></Image> with truthy children, which would make Image render children instead of the <img> — refuted in practice: whitespace-only JSX children that would survive stripping are already a React void-element error in the source.
  • Open: the coupling in row 1. Nothing fails today; it is a trap for the next childProps entry, not a defect in this one.

🏄 Clean little set wave, dude — .image and its <img> drop in together, the ratio classes do not get force-fed a has-ratio they never ordered, and anything gnarly like a stray loading="lazy" or a ref just gets paddled back to shore as markup. Good to go. 🤙

The ratios are left out of the entry's modifiers because size would add
has-ratio beside them, but with no omits reason the lookup fell back to
saying bestax has no prop for them. The entry now records that reason.

The truth test also holds absorbs.childProps to the target's own props,
since those attributes move onto it without the checks an element's own
attributes pass.
The regenerated index carries the reason, so lookup_bulma_classes says
size would add has-ratio beside a ratio, rather than that bestax has no
prop for it.

deep-review: verify

Check the fix for the open thread (the ratios' missing omits reason) in 2fbfbd5 and 3ea4d0c. The review's advisory, holding childProps to ownProps, is in 2fbfbd5 too.

Keep it short: runs here get stopped by the runner at about 20 minutes, so read with git show <sha> and don't run builds or test suites (CI runs them on this head).

Deep review (verify) — 1 resolved · 0 open

# Severity Area Finding Location Status
1 🟡 Minor API Ratios left out of modifiers with no omits reason, so lookup_bulma_classes said bestax has no prop for is-4by3 bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/class-map.ts:1543 ✅ Verified fixed

What I checked for that thread

  • 2fbfbd55 gives all 15 is-NbyM tokens an omits reason, and that set is exactly the ratio arm of the size union on Image (bulma-ui/src/elements/Image.tsx:39-53) — no extras, none missing.
  • bestax-mcp/src/bulma-classes.ts:449 reaches own(entry.omits, token) then stays(token, omitted) and the three-column row rendered at :725, so the reason replaces the old passthrough verdict.
  • pnpm --filter bestax-mcp run test -t lookup_bulma_classes passed 24/24, including the row the test now pins.
  • has-ratio and is-aspect-ratio-* are in neither modifiers nor omits, so they keep the passthrough reason, which is right — nothing renders them.
  • The index regenerated in 3ea4d0ca matches the source entry token-for-token and in order.
  • omits is consumed only by scripts/gen-mcp-index.mjs:513 and the MCP lookup, so the codemod's conversion behaviour is untouched.
  • The invariant from the advisory landed in the same commit: image is the only entry with absorbs.childProps (src, alt), and both appear in its ownProps, so the new truth test passes rather than passing vacuously.

Overall: This pass settled threads and reviewed no commits. The fix is the narrow, correct one — a data-only reason string plus its regenerated index — and it matches the two existing omits precedents on input/textarea. Nothing is left open on my side; a human need only confirm CI is green on this head.

Residual risk: none identified for the settled thread — the omits key set was checked against the component's own size union rather than against the list in my suggestion, the lookup path was traced to the render line, and the generated index was compared to its source entry. Anything beyond that thread is out of scope for a verify pass.

🏄 Clean little set wave, dude — one missing reason, one smooth carve, index re-stamped and the tests called it. Paddle it on in.
