test(eval): record the first migration run, and fix the skill recipes it tripped on - #795
Conversation
The migration brief's first run, graded against rubric-migrate (version 3): 98 of 100. The builder loaded the bestax-migrate skill, ran the codemod, and finished its TODOs by hand, taking Bulma component classes from 85 to none. It lost two points on guidance engagement for never opening the component and prop maps or the form skill. The README's table of loops gains runs-migrate/.

Deep review — 1 blocking · 2 advisory
| # | Severity | Area | Finding | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🟡 Minor | Correctness | Burger "bars" are span counts: Bulma stacks spans 1 and 2, so four spans draw three bars and the pre-5.16.10 three drew two — #785 and the run's own scorecard both count spans | skills/bestax-migrate/references/bulma-classes/unmappables.md:183 |
| 2 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | "its first control shows a focus ring the old markup didn't" — the focus move is real (Modal.tsx:504-524), but Bulma rings a button under :focus-visible (bulma/sass/elements/button.scss:274), not :focus, so a mouse-opened modal often paints none. Deleting that clause leaves the sentence exact. CodeRabbit has this thread open too |
skills/bestax-migrate/references/bulma-classes/unmappables.md:198 |
| 3 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | PR body carries the same span→bar conflation as #1 ("rendered three bars … draws a fifth bar on 5.16.10"); the scorecard's own wording is correct. For the maintainer — neither this review nor the fix agent can edit the body | PR description |
Overall: Sound change, and the unusual thing about it is that three of the four claims check out against source exactly as written — I verified each one rather than taking the commit message's word for it. Tabs.Tab really does wrap children in a <span> inside the <a> (Tabs.tsx:357-367); Dialog and Toast really do render .dialog/.toast (Dialog.tsx:181, Toast.tsx:193), which Bulma's stylesheet has no rule for; Modal really does move focus in on open and back on close; Span display="flex" alignItems="center" is a real, exported, valid spelling (index.ts:49, validDisplays/validAlignItems), so the tabs recipe is copy-pasteable. The one defect is the burger's bar arithmetic, and it lands in the one recipe whose whole job is to stop an agent padding the burger — worth fixing before merge because a reader who counts bars in the browser is led straight back to the workaround. Focus there first; everything else is wording on the record.
Residual risk:
- Could the "recipe contradicts
bulma-ui/src" class still bite elsewhere in the diff? Refuted for the other three recipes by reading the source:Tabs.tsx:349-371,Dialog.tsx:181/276,Toast.tsx:189-208,Modal.tsx:503-529,Navbar.tsx:305-337. SKILL.md step 4's pointers all resolve —component-map.mdandprop-map.mdexist under every one of the fourreferences/<source>/directories, andskills/bestax-form/exists. - Could the version boundary be wrong? Refuted:
bulma-ui/CHANGELOG.md:1dates 5.16.10 to 2026-09-27 and lists #785's four-span fix under it, so "releases before 5.16.10" is the right cut. Only the bar/span nouns are wrong, not the number. - A second copy of the burger guidance drifting out of sync. Refuted: the only other prose that mentions
family:navbar-burgerisdocs/docs/guides/getting-started/migration/bulma-classes.md:110-115and the codemod's TODO (bestax-migrate/src/sources/bulma-classes/class-map.ts:1517); neither states a span or bar count, so neither now disagrees. Nothing automated holds these recipes tobulma-ui/src— conformance covers rosters and catalogs, not recipe prose — which is how #1 got in, and it stays open as a class. - Generated-artefact staleness. Refuted by hand rather than by running the generator: the sole changed line in
bestax-mcp/data/skills.jsonisunmappables.md'sbytes15109 → 15880, andwc -con the file is 15880. The manifest byte-stamps references only, notSKILL.md, so no second line should have moved. - Executable surface: none. The diff is skill markdown, one generated manifest line, and the eval run record — no workflow, shell, jq, or library source changes, so the infra-lens failure modes (trigger widening, swallowed errors, silent no-ops) have nothing to attach to here.
🏄 Mellow set, dude — three recipes paddled out clean and came back exactly matching the source, which is rarer than it sounds. Just one gnarly little wipeout where spans got called bars, and that one's on the very wave the recipe was written to warn about. Patch the count and this one's good to go.
…gration tripped on From the first migration eval run (mg01): - The skill's TODO step now says to look a component up in the component and prop maps before writing it by hand, and to load bestax-form for form markup. The run did neither and read the library's type declarations instead. - The burger recipe says not to add spans of your own, and that releases before 5.16.10 render three spans where Bulma v1 positions four, so upgrade rather than pad it. The run added a span, one too many on 5.16.10. - The modal recipe says to keep Modal when the page has to look the same, since Dialog and Toast render bestax's own markup. - The tabs recipe says Tabs.Tab puts its label in a span, and how to align something that sat beside it.

| 1 | 🟡 Minor | Correctness | Burger counts were span counts, not bar counts — resolved: the recipe now says spans throughout, and agrees with Navbar.tsx, the 5.16.10 changelog entry and the mg01 scorecard |
skills/bestax-migrate/references/bulma-classes/unmappables.md:183 |
Overall: This pass settled threads and reviewed no commits. The one open thread from the prior deep review is fixed: family:navbar-burger now counts spans end to end — "renders the burgers spans", "Bulma positions every span in the burger", "releases before 5.16.10 render three spans where Bulma v1 positions four" — which agrees with bulma-ui/src/components/Navbar.tsx:326-332 (four aria-hidden spans, with the comment naming the mixins four positions), bulma-ui/CHANGELOG.md:16 ("render the four burger spans Bulma v1 positions", 785, in 5.16.10) and the mg01 scorecard. The wording that could have pushed an agent into re-padding the burger is gone. The two advisories from that review were taken as well: the family:modal recipe now ends at the .dialog/.toast visual-parity point with the focus sentence deleted (unmappables.md:194-197), and the PR bodys burger bullet reads "three spans where Bulma v1 positions four".
Residual risk: none identified for the settled thread — every remaining statement of the burger fact in the repo (the recipe, Navbar.tsxs children prop doc and inline comment, the changelog entry, the scorecard, the PR body) now counts spans, so there is no surviving copy for an agent to read as a promise of four visible bars. bestax-mcp/data/skills.json was regenerated in c2e4c44 for the files new byte count, so the shipped index is not stale against the edited reference.
🏄 Clean little set-the-record-straight ride — the burger counts spans the way the code does, the modal recipe stopped promising focus rings it cannot deliver, and nothing is left bobbing out back. Good to go, dude.

The first run of the migration eval from #746, and the skill fixes it points to.
The run
mg01builtbriefs/bulma-migrate.mdfrom a fresh scaffold with the shipped skills, against@allxsmith/bestax-bulma5.16.9 andbestax-migrate2.12.0 from the registry, under the harness defaults (opus, $15, 45 minutes). It took Bulma component classes from 85 to none, raw Bulma classNames from 44 to one (a<Title as="h2" className="is-3">, the prop map's own recipe), and hand-rolled markup from 27 to none, with the build and typecheck clean.
