feat(eslint-plugin): add @allxsmith/eslint-plugin-bestax - #686
Conversation
The helper value tuples (validColors, validTextSizes, …) were reachable only through the root barrel, which is the whole component library and needs React — a peer dependency — resolvable. That makes them impractical for tooling that wants to validate a value without loading the library: an ESLint plugin runs in plain node at lint time, and pulling in React and every component to read an array of strings is the wrong trade. src/helpers/bulmaClassHelpers.ts has no imports at all, so it bundles on its own to a fraction of the barrel's size with no React and no component code. Declarations are not regenerated for it; the main bundle's pass already emits dist/types/helpers/bulmaClassHelpers.d.ts, which is what the subpath's `types` points at. Consumers that validate against these tuples now track whatever version of the library is installed, rather than a copy that can drift from it.
useBulmaClasses validates helper values by membership and emits nothing for a value it does not recognise — no throw, no warning, no fallback, as docs/docs/api/helpers/valid-values.md states. So textColor="blue" and textSize="8" type-check under a widened prop, render nothing, and tell the author nothing. Nothing in the toolchain caught that class of bug until now. #350 named lint enforcement as the follow-up hardening step for it and deliberately deferred it; this is that step. Four rules, three of them in `recommended` as errors because each reports code that does not do what it says: valid-helper-value values outside the library's own tuples no-deprecated-props isFullWidth, gapSize*, icon, and the props retired outright because no shipped CSS ever matched them no-inert-flex-props justifyContent and friends with no flex display, which useFlexboxClasses gates and therefore never emits no-color-as-surface ships off by default, declared in OPT_IN_RULES. It asks for textColor over the `color` alias, which is a question of spelling rather than of correctness — running it over the docs' own code fences reported dozens of correct examples, which is the evidence it does not belong in a default-on set. Narrowing it to stay silent when the element sets a background explicitly came from the same exercise: `<Box backgroundColor="light" color="dark">` is a deliberate pairing, and telling that author `color` is not a background is nonsense. Two design points worth stating, because both are load-bearing: The library is a runtime dependency, imported through its new /constants subpath. Validating against the tuples belonging to the version the consumer installed is the only way the rules cannot drift from it, and the subpath keeps React and the components out of lint time. Declared in SIBLING_RUNTIME_DEPS, which a test holds to the real manifest. The deprecation table and the text-alias element set are generated from the library's TSDoc by scripts/gen-eslint-meta.mjs, not hand-listed. The replacement a rename fixes to is parsed out of the note the library already writes, so the autofix comes from the library's own words and a rename reaches the plugin with the release that makes it. The generator refuses to write an empty table, so a TSDoc rewording fails the run instead of quietly disabling a rule. Every rule resolves elements through the import rather than the tag name, so a project's own <Box> is never linted against Bulma's, and skips any value it cannot read as a literal. A false report on correct code teaches people to switch the rule off, which costs more than a missed one. Not yet publishable: ci.yml needs a release step and supply-chain.yml needs its SBOM and provenance roster entries, both human-authored.
… code
A review sweep of the initial commit found the plugin was a no-op out of the
box and that three of its four rules could report or rewrite code they had no
business touching. Each item below was reproduced before it was fixed and is
now pinned by a test.
The preset lint nothing. `configs.recommended` set only `plugins` and `rules`,
so it inherited ESLint's default `**/*.{js,mjs,cjs}` file set. Every rule here
visits only `JSXOpeningElement`, so the documented one-line setup matched no
JSX at all and said nothing about why:
app.jsx -> File ignored because no matching configuration was supplied
app.tsx -> File ignored because no matching configuration was supplied
It now declares `files` and enables JSX parsing, and carries no `parser` so a
consumer's TypeScript choice survives. The end-to-end check that should have
caught this passed its own `files` instead of the preset's, which is why it
did not; the new test lints through the preset as published.
Autofixes that changed behaviour or broke the build:
- Two deprecated props renaming to the SAME replacement both applied, and
`<Tabs isFullWidth fullwidth />` was rewritten to a duplicate JSX
attribute, which is TS17001. A pass now tracks what it has claimed. The
old test asserted the broken output.
- A spread could hold the prop a fix's safety guard depended on, so
`<Box {...{textColor:'info'}} color="primary" />` silently changed which
colour rendered. `no-color-as-surface` and `no-inert-flex-props` now go
silent on a spread; `no-deprecated-props` reports without a fix.
- `no-color-as-surface` hand-rolled a literal check instead of using
`literalValue()`, so it fixed values it had never read, including a bare
boolean `color`, and leaked the string `<value>` into its message.
Wrong results:
- Imports were collected in an `ImportDeclaration` visitor, during the same
document-order traversal as the JSX. An import below the JSX using it had
not been seen yet, so every rule went silent on a legal, compiling file.
Collection moved to `Program`.
- Element resolution was a name table with no scope analysis, so a file that
imported `Box` and also declared its own `const Box` got the local's JSX
linted against Bulma's rules. `elementOf()` now resolves through scope,
the way bestax-migrate's `resolvesToBinding` does for the same bug.
- The generated tables were read with plain index access, so keys from user
source resolved `Object.prototype` members: `<Icon valueOf="x" />`
reported a deprecation with an empty note. Own-property reads now.
Release and build correctness:
- The three `turbo.json` overrides were keyed `eslint-plugin#<task>`, but
turbo resolves `pkg#task` by package NAME. All three silently resolved to
`dependsOn: []` — every existing key happens to have name == directory —
so on a clean checkout the plugin's typecheck and tests could run before
bulma-ui built the `/constants` entry they import.
- `gen:eslint-meta:check` was wired into nothing while four places claimed
CI gated it. It now runs in `pnpm all`; the ci.yml step is handed over
with the other workflow changes.
- `engines.node: ">=22"` contradicted a peer range advertising ESLint 9,
which supports Node 18 and 20 and was never tested here. The peer range
is now `^10` only, matching what the lockfile and the suite exercise.
- `meta.version` was absent, so ESLint's `--cache` fingerprint did not
change across an upgrade and a new or tightened rule was served from a
stale cache.
Claims that were not true, now corrected rather than quietly dropped:
- The headline premise. The helper props are typed as literal unions, so
`tsc` already rejects `textAlign="center"` in a `.tsx` file, with its own
"Did you mean 'centered'?". `valid-helper-value` is for where that check
does not run: JavaScript and JSX, code in markdown, lint stages before
typechecking. The deprecation and flex rules are additive everywhere.
- "always matches the version you have installed". A runtime `dependencies`
entry resolves this package's own copy, which an ordinary deduped install
makes the app's but a major split does not. The dependency stays runtime
on purpose, so the correction is to the prose.
- "no style rules here", on a page that then documents an opt-in rule about
spelling.
- The generated text-alias comment said absence implied a real `is-<color>`
modifier. `Level`, `Section`, `Footer` and `Media` funnel `color`
identically but word their TSDoc differently, so the set is incomplete and
now says so. A name-anchored guard replaces the emptiness-only one, so
rewording one component fails the generator instead of quietly dropping it
from a rule.
Also: `renamed`/`retired` carried identical message text while mislabelling
`Icon.libraryFeatures`, whose note names two replacements, as a prop retired
for never having worked; collapsed to one message. `replacementFrom` had no
test despite parsing prose into edits, and now has a sibling suite. The
constants rollup entry keeps the main bundle's `external` and narrows its
`include`, so a future runtime helper in that file cannot inline React.
Removed a dead `textSizeViewports` export that duplicated a private library
list and was consumed by nothing.
The headline setup example was `[bestax.configs.recommended]` on its own, which
is the wrong one to copy for this library. bestax-bulma is a TypeScript
library, the preset deliberately sets no `parser` so a consumer's choice
survives, and the consequence is that the short form hands `.tsx` to the
default parser:
3:1 error Parsing error: The keyword 'interface' is reserved
The prose did say a TypeScript project needs a parser, two paragraphs below the
example everyone would paste. Now the parser form comes first and the bare
preset is labelled as the JavaScript and JSX case, with the parse error quoted
so nobody has to rediscover it.
The TypeScript snippet also imported `typescript-eslint`, which is not
installed anywhere in this repo, so it was never run. Replaced with
`@typescript-eslint/parser`, which is what the repo actually has and what the
example was verified against: it lints a `.tsx` carrying an interface and a
`.jsx` through the same config. A sentence covers the `typescript-eslint` case
without asserting an untested snippet.
Badge URLs now spell the scope unencoded, matching bulma-ui, the other scoped
package. Both forms resolve; this is the house spelling.
The telemetry guide has a section per package, including one stating that bestax-mcp sends none. The plugin belongs in that list for the same reason: someone auditing what phones home should find it there rather than infer it from absence. It has no network code at all. The only URLs in the package are the documentation links in each rule's metadata, which ESLint prints beside a report and nothing fetches.
A second review round found two things, both confirmed against the built
plugin.
The preset matches `.tsx` while shipping no parser, so spread on its own
against a `.tsx` file carrying type syntax it produces a FATAL parse error,
not a lint report:
fatal=true | Parsing error: The keyword 'interface' is reserved
The comment justifying the glob argued that `.ts`/`.mts`/`.cts` are excluded
because handing espree TypeScript syntax cannot work, and then included `.tsx`
anyway, which is the same hazard. The review's suggested fix was to drop `tsx`
from the glob. I tested that and it is worse: with the extension absent, a
consumer who configures a TypeScript parser gets ZERO rules on any `.tsx`
file, because a flat config object only applies to what its own `files`
matches. Verified both ways — 0 reports without `tsx` in the glob, 1 with it.
So `.tsx` stays and the parser becomes a stated requirement rather than a
nicety. The comment now gives the real reason for the asymmetry (`.tsx` is
where the JSX is and the rules must reach it; `.ts` can hold none, so matching
it would add parse risk for no reports), and both the README and the docs page
lead with the parser form and say plainly what happens without it.
Second, `valid-helper-value` does not cover the `BulmaOtherProps` family at
all: `float`, `overflow`, `interaction`, `cursor`, `radius`, `shadow`,
`responsive`. Seven wrong values on one element produce zero reports, and
`useOtherClasses` drops every one of them as silently as the covered props do.
The cause is structural rather than an oversight: alone among the helper
families their values exist only as inline unions on the interface, with
matching literal arrays inside the hook, so there is no exported tuple to
check against. Closing it means giving them tuples in `bulmaClassHelpers.ts`
the way every other family has, which is a change to the library and wants its
own pass. Until then the gap is declared next to the `color` one rather than
left for someone to discover, and the README and docs say which families are
covered instead of implying all of them are.
Also corrected: the examples marked as correct usage for `no-color-as-surface`
did not compile. `Box` narrows `color` to the six main colours and Omits
`backgroundColor` entirely, so `<Box backgroundColor="light" color="dark">` is
two type errors. I had taken that line from the library's own margin-and-padding
guide, which turns out to have the same bug in five places — filed separately
as #685. The examples now use `<Box bgColor="info" color="primary">`, which
typechecks, and the fixture that still exercises the `backgroundColor` spelling
says why it is on an element that accepts it.
A third review round, at higher effort. Every claim below was reproduced
against the built plugin through `configs.recommended` before being fixed, and
each now has a test.
Autofixes that changed rendering:
- Two deprecated props renaming to the same target are resolved by the
library in a fixed order — Tabs does `isFullwidth ?? isFullWidth ??
fullwidth`. Renaming whichever appeared first promoted it past the one that
was winning, so `<Tabs fullwidth isFullWidth={false} />` (not fullwidth)
became `<Tabs isFullwidth isFullWidth={false} />` (fullwidth). The previous
round's `claimed` set stopped the duplicate-attribute crash but not this.
Neither is fixed now.
- `icon` and `name` do not share a value grammar: the library keeps only the
last space-separated segment of `icon` and never splits `name`. So the
rename turned `icon="material-symbols-outlined home"` from the `home`
ligature into that string rendered as literal text. Declared in
VALUE_GRAMMAR_DIFFERS, because nothing in the generated note says whether
two props read their value the same way.
- Duplicate JSX attributes are legal JavaScript and React resolves them
last-wins, but the attribute lookup was `Array.prototype.find`. So
`<Box color="primary" color="danger" />`, which renders `has-text-danger`,
was rewritten to hoist the LOSING value. `namedAttr` now reads the winner,
which makes the fix rendering-preserving.
Reports that were not true:
- `redundant` fired on `<Box textColor={maybe} color="primary" />`, telling
the author to delete a `color` the library still falls back to whenever
`maybe` is undefined (`color: textColor ?? color`). It now requires a
readable literal, like every other value this package reads.
- `ambiguous` asserted a class the library will not emit: `<Box color="blue" />`
was told it "renders `has-text-blue`". It renders nothing, and the fix
moved a dead value to a different dead prop. Gated on the colour tuple, so
a wrong value is left to the rule that owns it.
Coverage that was silently missing:
- Numeric literals. Every tuple holds strings and the library's check is a
plain `includes`, so `m={2}` emits nothing — and `m={2}` is the natural
spelling in exactly the JavaScript projects this package is for. Three
wrong numbers on one element produced zero reports; they now report with
their own message, since the fix is the quotes rather than the value.
- The CommonJS `require` shape. `.cjs` is in the preset's glob and parses as
sourceType commonjs, where `import` is a syntax error, so every rule was
permanently silent on the files the README sells this to. The scope check
had to learn the same shape, or it rejected the binding the collector had
just recorded.
The test that was supposed to guard last round's P0 was vacuous: it passed a
config ARRAY whose own first object carried the same `files` glob, which
matched the file and suppressed the warning the assertion looked for whatever
the preset did. Rebuilding the preset without `files` left it green. It now
spreads the preset as the ONLY config object and asserts a real report from a
real import, and deleting the glob fails two tests.
`bulma-ui`'s `./constants` advertised a `require` condition pointing at
`constants.cjs.js` — a `.js` file in a `"type": "module"` package, which Node
reads as ESM, so the CommonJS `exports.x =` assignments produced nothing and
`require('@allxsmith/bestax-bulma/constants')` returned an EMPTY OBJECT rather
than failing. Emitting `constants.cjs` fixes it: 20 exports either way now.
The `.` entry has the same defect on main and is left alone as pre-existing.
`replacementFrom` admitted `.` in a replacement name, which no prop can
contain, so it matched only the one shape that cannot be a valid fix — and the
library carries `Use \`Tabs.Tab\` with an \`index\` prop instead.`, which
escaped solely because "with an" sits between the backtick and "instead".
Restricted to legal attribute characters, plus a new guard asserting every
replacement is a prop the element really declares. The test had pinned the
dotted form as CORRECT; it now pins the refusal.
Prose corrected rather than left: root CLAUDE.md and the generated header both
claimed CI fails on a stale table, which it will not until the ci.yml step
lands; CLAUDE.md's SIBLING_RUNTIME_DEPS note still said "the three CLIs"; the
docs contributing guide enumerated RELEASE_SCOPES without the new scope in two
places; the security guide's "every published package … provenance" had a
counterexample the moment the bootstrap placeholder went up; values.ts kept the
"cannot drift" overclaim the other sites had already lost; index.ts said
ESLint 9+ against a `^10` peer range; and the value rule's header named
markdown as its payoff when the preset matches no `.md`/`.mdx` at all.

CodeRabbit's five findings on #686, each reproduced before being fixed. Duplicate JSX attributes are legal JavaScript and React resolves them last-wins, so `valid-helper-value` judged a value the element does not render: `<Box m="bogus" m="4" />` renders `m="4"` and was reported anyway. The previous round fixed this for `no-color-as-surface` only, by reading the last match; `winningAttributes` now does it once for every rule that reads props by name. Both permutations are pinned, because only one of them should report. `m={-1}` was silent. A negative parses as a unary minus over a literal rather than as a negative literal, so the numeric reader saw nothing — and the spacing scale is exactly where someone reaches for a negative, which is what #678 is about. A module that declares its own `require` is not calling the CommonJS one, but the collector took any `require('@allxsmith/bestax-bulma')` call at face value and linted the result as ours. Read off the program body rather than through the scope API: `getScope(Program)` answers with the OUTERMOST scope and a top-level `const require` lives in a child of it, so walking `upper` never saw the shadow. `const`, `function` and `import` forms are all covered. Two documentation claims were left behind by the previous commit, which withheld those fixes without saying so: - The rules table still marked `icon` → `name` "(fixable)". It is reported and not fixed, because the two props do not read their value the same way. - "A rename carries its replacement, so it is autofixable" was too broad; the four cases that get no fix are now listed, with the reason each. And the security guide named the plugin among the packages released through CI with npm provenance, with a supported 1.x line and a provenance link. None of that is true until its first CI release: the only published version is a placeholder pushed by hand, which no laptop can attest. Removed from all three lists, and it was already on the post-publish follow-up list in the handover. The sentence itself stays "the packages released through CI" rather than "every published package", which is what makes it true with a hand-published placeholder on the registry.

Three prior rounds each found one of those, so the class is proven live. Also worth checking: the |

Overall: The change is sound and unusually well defended. I re-ran the gate locally (107 plugin tests, coverage 98.5 / 89.9 against the 95 / 78 threshold, check:conformance 21/21, gen:eslint-meta:check clean, 776 node --test script assertions) and drove the built plugin over roughly 45 adversarial fixtures rather than reading the diff. The ./constants fix is real: dist/constants.cjs now carries all 23 tuples and resolves through the subpath from a CJS caller, where the .cjs.js spelling would have been read as ESM and handed back an empty object. The riskiest part is the one remaining place a rule reads JSX differently from React — finding 1 — because it is the fourth instance of that exact class on this PR and the prose asserts the opposite. Look at that first; finding 2 is message-only, on an opt-in rule.
Residual risk:
- Autofixes changing what renders — refuted for everything that ships. All nine
TEXT_ALIAS_COLOR_ELEMENTSfunnelcolorthroughcolor: textColor ?? colorand use it nowhere else (checked each source), socolortotextColorpreserves the render, shade included. Every fixable rename inDEPRECATED_PROPSshares a value grammar with its target (BulmaGapSize = BulmaGapValue; theisFullwidthfamily is boolean either side), and the generator now refuses to emit a replacement the element does not declare. Spread, already-written, contested, andVALUE_GRAMMAR_DIFFERSeach withhold the fix — verified by execution, not by reading. - Reports asserting a class the library would not emit — one found (finding 2) and posted. Otherwise refuted: the gate list in
no-inert-flex-propsmatches the ten display-prop reads inuseFlexboxClassesexactly; the bandedtextSize/textAlign/display/visibilityfamilies inHELPER_VALUESmatch the declared prop names one for one; and no component anywhere inbulma-ui/srcredeclares a helper prop from that table with a union of its own, so a per-prop table cannot over-report. - Reading a JSX attribute the way React does not — finding 1 is the open one. Duplicate names are handled correctly in both directions:
m="bogus" m="4"is silent,m="4" m="bogus"reports, display="flex" display="block"reports inert and the reverse does not. - Scope and import shadowing — the unresolved CodeRabbit thread on
isLibraryRequireis largely closed by the top-levelrequireShadowedguard; a top-levelconst require = createRequire(...)now silences collection entirely. One hole survives: a destructured shadow is not anIdentifierid and slips past it. Reaching a false report through that needs arequireshim returning something other than the library while the source still destructuresBoxfrom it, so it is named here as open rather than posted. - Known and declared false negatives — scheme
bgColorvalues on elements that do not widen them, theBulmaOtherPropsfamily with no exported tuple, the incomplete text-alias set, and a BigInt spacing value, which is not anumberliteral. All are silence-on-a-wrong-value, never a report on right code, and the first three are documented invalues.tsand the generated header. - Release wiring — the plugin cannot publish until the
.github/hunks are applied by hand, andgen:eslint-meta:checkhas no CI step until then, so a stale generated table could merge with CI green. Both are stated in the PR body; neither is fixable inside the refusal boundary this PR respects.
🏄 Five packages deep and still paddling clean — this one caught its own wipeouts three rounds running, and the fourth is just the spread dropping in on you from behind. Patch that one attribute read and it is good to go out.
Deep review round 1 on #686: two blocking, and the blocking one is the fourth instance of the same class on this PR. JSX is last-wins throughout, spreads included, so a spread AFTER an attribute overwrites it. `valid-helper-value` judged the written value anyway, which makes `<Box textAlign="center" {...rest} />` a report about a value that `rest.textAlign` may well replace. The shorthand this package asserted in three places — "an explicit attribute wins over a spread" — is true only of a spread that comes FIRST. `valuesThatRender()` now drops anything a later spread could overwrite, `winningAttributes()` keeps its narrower job of settling duplicate names, and both permutations are pinned. That distinction only applies to rules judging a VALUE. A rule reporting that a prop is deprecated is right either way, because the author wrote the deprecated prop whether or not its value survives, so `no-deprecated-props` still reports through a trailing spread and still withholds its fix. `no-color-as-surface` asserted `has-text-<color>` while `colorShade` makes the emitted class `has-text-<color>-<shade>`, so the message named a class the library would not emit. It reads the shade now. Two advisories taken rather than argued: - Fixing one of a doubled deprecated attribute left the other behind: `<Tabs isFullWidth isFullWidth />` became `<Tabs isFullWidth isFullwidth />`, still carrying a deprecated prop. A repeated name withholds the fix. - The `claimed` set could never block a fix that `contested` had not already blocked, since `winningAttributes` de-dupes by name. Removed rather than left reading as a guard doing work. CodeRabbit's second pass found the hole the deep review had named as open, from the other side: a `require` shadow does not have to be a plain identifier. `const { require } = shim`, `const [require] = shims`, a rename, a default and a nested pattern all bind the name, and the guard read only `id.name`. `patternBinds()` walks the pattern; all six forms verified, and a real `require` still collects.

deep-review: fresh Round 1's blocking finding was the fourth instance of "a rule reads JSX differently from React" on this PR, so that is still the class worth the most attention. Also closed since round 1: the destructured |

PR body |
Overall: The change is sound and unusually well defended — the JSX-reading layer now matches React on the two things that bit it (duplicate attribute names, and a spread that comes after the attribute), and I could not construct a third. Verified empirically: pnpm --filter @allxsmith/eslint-plugin-bestax test:coverage is 114/114 at 98.31 percent statements / 89.2 branches, typecheck and lint are clean, and check:conformance is 21/21 including publishable-manifests. The riskiest part is no longer the attribute layer but the one place a rule still states a rendered class as fact: no-color-as-surface builds its message out of colorShade without applying the membership test the hook applies, which is finding 1 and is the round-1 defect shape one step further out. Look at that first; the rest is on the record rather than blocking.
Residual risk:
- A trailing spread overwriting the judged value — refuted.
valuesThatRenderdrops every attribute at or before the lastJSXSpreadAttribute; pinned in both directions byvalid-helper-value.test.ts:41(trailing spread silences) and:55(leading spread still reports). The other three rules either go silent on any spread or judge the prop rather than the value, and each header says which. - Duplicate attribute names — refuted.
winningAttributeskeeps the last of each name andnamedAttrsearches backwards; pinned atvalid-helper-value.test.ts:44and:61,elements.test.ts:138, andno-deprecated-props.test.ts:70for the fix-withholding half. - The flex gate reading a different display set from the library — refuted.
DISPLAY_PROPSisdisplayplus the nine bands, exactly the ten identifiersuseFlexboxClassesdestructures forhasFlexDisplay; the legacyhasViewportSpecificDisplaybranch inuseVisibilityClassesdoes not feed that gate. redundantasserting a precedence the component does not have — refuted. All nine members ofTEXT_ALIAS_COLOR_ELEMENTSresolvecolor: textColor ?? color, checked against the component sources rather than the generated table.- An autofix changing what renders — refuted for the rename rule:
written, contested, doubled, the spread check andVALUE_GRAMMAR_DIFFERSeach have a pinned case, and the generator now refuses a replacement the element does not declare. A name collision between a helper prop and a component prop would defeatvalid-helper-value; there is none — no component redeclares any prop inHELPER_VALUES, and the two that widen (color,bgColor) are handled by exclusion and by union. - Open: the
colorShadecase above — the rule still names a class it has not read. - Open: a value written as boolean shorthand, per advisory 3. Silence is the safe direction, so it is a bullet and not a finding.
🏄 Fifth package drops in clean, dude — the spread-and-duplicate gnarl that wiped out three earlier rounds is handled properly now, and the test suite reads like it was written by someone who has actually been held under. Just one little shade of colour still gets called before anyone looks at it. Patch that and paddle out.
Deep review round 2. Its verdict on the layer that bit three earlier rounds:
the JSX reading now matches React on duplicate names and on a trailing spread,
and it could not construct a third case. What was left is one step further out
from the same shape.
`no-color-as-surface` built `has-text-<color>-<shade>` out of whatever
`colorShade` held, but `addColorClass` shades only
`if (shade && validColorShades.includes(shade))` and falls back to the unshaded
class otherwise. So `colorShade="99"` was reported as rendering
`has-text-primary-99` when the library renders `has-text-primary`. The shade is
now tested for membership, and a shade the rule cannot read silences the report
entirely, because then it cannot state which class renders at all.
`valid-helper-value` was silent on a boolean shorthand. A bare `mt` reaches the
library as `true`, matches no tuple of strings, and renders nothing — the same
argument `numericValue` was written on, one type out. It reports with its own
message, since the fix is supplying a value rather than changing one. A bare
attribute on a genuinely boolean prop is untouched.
The `textColor` unreadable-value guard added last round was the only uncovered
statement in its file, so deleting it kept every test green. Pinned, and the
rule is at 100% now.
Two documentation findings taken:
- The README and the guide sold "code in markdown and MDX" as a headline
audience. It is reachable, but only with an ESLint markdown processor and
the library import repeated inside every fence, which is not something a
sentence can promise. The clause is gone; the guide says plainly that the
preset matches no `.md`/`.mdx`.
- `./constants` was a new permanent export-map entry documented only in
passing on the plugin's own page. It now has a section in
`bulma-ui/CLAUDE.md`, carrying the two things that failed once (the file
must stay import-free, and the CommonJS artifact must be `.cjs` or Node
reads it as ESM and hands back an empty object), and the valid-values
reference shows the subpath import.
Recorded without change: `HELPER_VALUES` keyed by prop rather than element, and
the `.github` hunks this PR deliberately omits. Both were already stated, in
`values.ts` and the PR body respectively.

| 1 | 🔵 Advisory | Process | The four .github/ hunks are still absent, re-confirmed at this head: eslint-plugin appears zero times in ci.yml and supply-chain.yml, and ci.yml carries four Semantic Release steps, not five. Merged as-is, CI goes green, bulma-ui releases, and the plugin publishes nowhere. |
.github/workflows/ci.yml:347 |
| 2 | 🔵 Advisory | Robustness | Nothing in CI runs node --test "scripts/*.test.mjs" or gen:eslint-meta:check, so five of this PR's new guards — constants-subpath, color-tuple-css, helper-prop-collisions, eslint-plugin-docs, gen-eslint-meta — are enforced only by a local pnpm all. The plugin's own jest suite and its coverage thresholds are in CI, through turbo. |
package.json:30 |
| 3 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | TEXT_ALIAS_COLOR_ELEMENTS is read from a TSDoc sentence and misses Level, Footer, Section, Media, Hero's sub-parts and every Card sub-part — I grepped the construct, and all 14 files carrying textColor ?? color are real text aliases while only 9 are in the set. Documented, and the false-negative direction on an opt-in rule. |
eslint-plugin/src/generated/metadata.ts:160 |
| 4 | 🔵 Advisory | API | HELPER_VALUES is keyed by prop, not by element, so <Block bgColor="scheme-main-bis" /> is accepted and renders nothing (Block reads no bulmaHelperStyles — checked in source). Documented in the table's own comment as the limitation it is, and it can only under-report. |
eslint-plugin/src/lib/values.ts:116 |
| 5 | 🔵 Advisory | Documentation | The plugin CLAUDE.md calls the "a CommonJS config cannot load it" claim "false on the Node range this package supports". engines.node is >=22, and on 22.0–22.11 require(esm) still needs --experimental-require-module. The README and the docs guide both hedge correctly ("on a Node that supports require(esm)"), so nothing a consumer reads is wrong — deleting "on the Node range this package supports" makes the remainder true. |
eslint-plugin/CLAUDE.md |
| 6 | 🔵 Advisory | Coverage | guardViolations() is now driven by eight synthetic cases, but the throw in collect() that consumes it is reached by no test. Deleting that line changes no output and leaves the node suite, gen:eslint-meta:check and pnpm all green. Standing since round 11. |
scripts/gen-eslint-meta.mjs:208 |
Overall: Sound, and this head is the cleanest the branch has been. I drove the rules rather than reading them — built bulma-ui and the plugin, then ran 29 adversarial snippets and 11 autofix round-trips through the real Linter, and every one landed on the safe side of the one-way invariant: Theme radius silent, textColor={null} silent, {...rest} before and after an attribute silent for no-color-as-surface, doubled names reported with the fix withheld, m={-1} reported as numericInvalid. Everything is green at 1df59986: plugin 157/157 at 98.53% statements / 91.22% branches (bar 95/78), bulma-ui 4192/4192 at 99.6 / 99.08 / 99.76 / 99.83 (bar 99), the node script suite 842/842, check:conformance 21/21, plus gen:eslint-meta:check, gen:mcp:check, typecheck, typecheck:tests and lint. The three review threads still open in the UI are all fixed in the code — UNSTYLED_MODIFIER_COLORS carries the white pair, no skills/ file claims white-ter is unmappable any more, and the theming skill lists both. The riskiest part of this merge is not the code — it is the .github/ half (row 1), which this PR may not touch and which fails silently. Land the two halves together, bulma-ui first, and apply all four hunks.
Residual risk — for the failure class this PR addresses: a helper value the library silently drops, unreported.
- A colour the CSS ships that the tuple does not. Refuted by execution: all four of
has-text-white-bis/-terandhas-background-white-bis/-terare indist/bestax.css,validColorscarries both, andscripts/color-tuple-css.test.mjsnow reads that CSS in both directions. Its own narrowness is stated in the file — only-bis/-terover the existing tuple, becausehas-text-is a shared namespace. - A colour in the tuple whose component modifier is dead. Refuted:
UNSTYLED_MODIFIER_COLORSand the set with no.notification/.progress/.hero.is-<c>rule are an equality check now, andCSS_BACKEDis held to its complement.Hero'sinherit/currentreach the warning throughextraUnstyled, so the reworded TSDoc's "every other value the union accepts … warns" is true of all three components. - A helper name meaning something else on some element. Refuted beyond
Theme: I grepped every component prop declaration against the whole plugin surface (the table keys, the flex and display props, color, textColor), andTheme.radiusis the only collision.Loading.overlayandSidebar.overlayare the near misses, andoverlayis a boolean no rule judges.helper-prop-collisions.test.mjsrecomputes theThemehalf frombulmaCssVars. - The
./constantstypes resolving differently from the runtime. Refuted by typechecking a real consumer in three modes:bundlerclean,node16CommonJS clean, and thenode16failure on the root entry reproduces withtypesVersionsdeleted from the manifest — so it is #696, not this branch. Therequirecondition loads through Node's own resolver, by specifier rather than by path. - A rule judging a value a spread overwrites, or an autofix leaving dead source. Refuted by execution:
valuesThatRender()drops everything at or before the last spread, and every name-rewriting fix withholds ondoubledNames. no-inert-flex-propsdisagreeing with the hook. Refuted by readinguseFlexboxClassesagainstDISPLAY_PROPS/FLEX_DISPLAYS/FLEX_CONTAINER_PROPS— ten display props, two flex values, five gated container helpers, three ungated child helpers — and by confirming no component feeds adisplayof its own intouseBulmaClasses.- Open, not refuted: rows 1 and 2. A guard CI never runs only protects contributors who run
pnpm all, and both the metadata staleness gate and the four new script suites are in that position. Both are.github-shaped and outside what this PR may change.
🏄 Twelve rounds out and this one finally caught the whole wave — tuples locked to the stylesheet both ways, the subpath resolving clean in every mode I threw at it, and not one false positive across twenty-nine test drops. The code is ready to paddle in; just don't forget the
.github/board still strapped to the roof, or nothing actually launches.

deep-review: fresh — re-requesting a read of 1df5998 |
…table `guardViolations` had eight cases and the line consuming it had none. On the real library every guard is dead code, so deleting that `throw` changed no output and left the node suite, `gen:eslint-meta:check` and `pnpm all` green. A bad property for the one thing standing between a corrupt table and an autofix writing into a consumer's source, and it had been standing since round eleven. `collect()` now takes the extractor as a parameter defaulting to the real one, which is the seam a test needs. Three cases: a replacement the element does not declare, the pair of emptiness guards reported together rather than first-one-wins, and the happy path returning both tables. Confirmed by making the deletion the review described: two of those fail now, where before it was silent. The happy-path fixture wants all three of `Box`, `Card` and `Content`, because the anchor guard requires every anchor to be a text alias. That is the anchors working, and the first version of the fixture found out by failing. Also corrected an overclaim in this file from two commits ago. It said the "a CommonJS config cannot load it" claim is "false on the Node range this package supports". `engines.node` is `>=22` and `require(esm)` needs a flag on the early 22.x releases, so it was true there. The README and the guide hedge on the capability rather than naming a version, which is the form that stays true, and this file now says so instead of overshooting in the other direction.
|
Round handled. Two fixed, four refuted, and one of the refutations is a factual correction worth stating plainly. 5, the CLAUDE.md overclaim. Fixed, and you are right. I corrected a false claim two commits ago and overshot in the other direction: 6, the untested throw in One thing the fixture taught me, worth recording. The happy path needs all three of 2, the five guards not in CI. Refuted on the first half, confirmed on the second. The root What is true is the other half: 1, the 3, the text-alias set. Standing and documented. The closed list naming which elements are missed is gone from the prose, since your own count and mine disagreed, which was the argument for deleting it. Keying on the 4, the per-prop table. Standing, documented in the table comment, and can only under-report. Nothing in this round touched |

Fresh review of the full diff at 1df59986. Everything below was executed at this head rather than read: turbo run build for bulma-ui and the plugin, the plugin suite (157/157, 98.53% statements / 91.22% branches against a 95/78 bar), the root pnpm run test chain (turbo plus 842 node --test cases), check:conformance (21/21), gen:eslint-meta:check, gen:mcp:check, gen:catalog:check, typecheck, lint (0 errors) and format:check. The four new script guards were each run on their own, and the rules were driven against the real Linter through scripts/eslint-plugin-docs.test.mjs — 42 documented examples, every ✓ asserting that no rule fires.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🔵 Advisory | Process | The four .github/ hunks are absent, re-confirmed by grep at this head: eslint-plugin appears zero times in both ci.yml and supply-chain.yml, ci.yml carries four Semantic Release steps rather than five, and Archive Coverage lists four coverage directories. Merged as-is, CI goes green, bulma-ui releases, and the plugin publishes nowhere. |
.github/workflows/ci.yml:347 |
| 2 | 🔵 Advisory | Robustness | gen:eslint-meta:check runs in no CI step, so the generated-metadata staleness gate exists only inside a local pnpm all. This corrects an earlier round of mine: the four new scripts/*.test.mjs suites are covered in CI — the Test step runs root pnpm run test, which chains node --test "scripts/*.test.mjs" after turbo run test, and I ran that chain here. The metadata check is the only one left outside. |
package.json:28 |
| 3 | 🔵 Advisory | Coverage | color-tuple-css.test.mjs calls a colour dead only when all three of .notification, .progress and .hero lack a rule for it. A colour Bulma ships on one of them but not the others lands in neither dead nor UNSTYLED_MODIFIER_COLORS, so the equality holds while one element renders a dead modifier with no warning. The three come off one upstream colour map today, so nothing diverges; a per-element comparison would make the guard exact rather than exact by luck. |
scripts/color-tuple-css.test.mjs:129 |
| 4 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | The table judges textColor and colorShade independently, so <Box textColor="white-bis" colorShade="15" /> passes while useColorClasses emits has-text-white-bis-15. I grepped the built stylesheet: .has-text-white-bis is the only class of that family, while .has-text-white-15 and .has-text-light-15 both ship. Pre-existing for the greys and the black pair; this change widens it by two. False-negative direction, which the stated one-way invariant allows. |
eslint-plugin/src/lib/values.ts:142 |
| 5 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | TEXT_ALIAS_COLOR_ELEMENTS carries nine names. Grepping the behaviour instead of the prose — color: textColor ?? color — finds it in fourteen files: Level, Media, Section, Footer, the Hero sub-parts and every Card sub-part are text aliases the TSDoc marker misses. Documented in the generator and in the generated comment, and a false negative on an opt-in rule. |
eslint-plugin/src/generated/metadata.ts:160 |
| 6 | 🔵 Advisory | API | Dropping SHADE_TODO makes both codemods emit textColor="white-ter" into a user tree with no caveat, where they used to emit a TODO naming the reason. That only typechecks against a @allxsmith/bestax-bulma new enough to carry the widened validColors, and bestax-migrate releases on its own scope, so the two halves can reach a user out of order. The failure is a type error rather than a silent one. |
bestax-migrate/src/sources/rbx/mapping.ts:58 |
Overall: Sound, and I could not find a case where any rule reports correct code — the property the whole design is organised around. I checked the keyed-by-prop table the hard way rather than trusting the Theme guard alone: grepping every component prop declaration for the table keys returns nothing outside src/helpers/, so Theme.radius really is the only name that means something else, and helper-prop-collisions.test.mjs recomputes that pair from the library variable list. no-inert-flex-props mirrors useFlexboxClasses exactly — ten display props, two flex values, five gated container helpers, three ungated child helpers — and no component feeds a display of its own into useBulmaClasses, which I also grepped. The riskiest part of this merge is not the code: it is the .github/ half in row 1, which this PR may not touch and which fails silently.
Residual risk — for the failure class this addresses: a helper value the library drops, unreported.
- A colour the CSS ships that the tuple lacks. Refuted by execution:
.has-text-white-bis,.has-text-white-ter,.has-background-white-bisand.has-background-white-terare all indist/bestax.css,validColorsnow carries both, andcolor-tuple-css.test.mjsreads that stylesheet in both directions. Its narrowness is stated in the file. - A colour in the tuple whose component modifier is dead. Refuted for the values themselves —
UNSTYLED_MODIFIER_COLORSand the no-rule set are an equality now,CSS_BACKEDis held to the complement, and theHeroextras reach the warning throughextraUnstyled. The per-element weakness of that equality is row 3, open. - A helper name meaning something else on some element. Refuted by grep over every component prop declaration, not only
Theme; nothing outsidesrc/helpers/redeclares a table key. - A rule judging a value a trailing spread overwrites, or an autofix leaving dead source. Refuted by reading
valuesThatRenderanddoubledNamesagainst every call site: each name-rewriting fix withholds on a doubled name, andvaluesThatRenderdrops everything at or before the last spread. - The subpath types disagreeing with its runtime. Refuted by
constants-subpath.test.mjs, which loads both conditions and typechecks a real node16 CommonJS consumer; it passed here in 1.4s. - The value-and-shade product, and the prose-keyed alias set. Open, and named in rows 4 and 5 — both false negatives, which is the direction the table declares it will be wrong in.
🏄 Three build steps, four fresh guards and not one wipeout across forty-two documented drops — this set is properly dialled in. Only thing still sitting up on the beach is the
.github/half; paddle that one out or nothing ever actually launches.

docs/docs/api/helpers/valid-values.mdstates. Nothing in the toolchain caughtthat class of bug. #350 named lint enforcement as the follow-up hardening step
for it and deliberately deferred it; this is that step.
Four rules, three of them in

own docs fences reported dozens of correct examples, which is the evidence it
does not belong in a default-on set.
Three design points worth a reviewer's attention
The library is a runtime
dependenciesentry, deliberately. That is whatmakes the package count as a dependent on npm, and it is declared in
SIBLING_RUNTIME_DEPS, whichscripts/publishable-manifests.test.mjsholds tothe real manifest. It is not an oversight and should not be "fixed" to a peer

One prop on one element is declared unreportable, rather than the table
being given up.
Thememints a prop for every Bulma CSS variable, so--bulma-radiuscollides with theradiushelper, and onThemethe tworeadings of that prop disagree: the runtime sets the variable, the declared
type is still the helper union. Reporting it was a false positive in the JS
and JSX projects this rule is for, and the fix it offered renders nothing. So
NOT_A_HELPER_PROPskips exactly that pair, andscripts/helper-prop-collisions.test.mjsrecomputes the collision from thelibrary's own variable list and fails if the declaration and the reality
differ.
radiusis the only collision out of Theme's 518 variable props, and--bulma-shadowis already filtered out of that map for the same reason, which the guard also asserts. The library-side disagreement is #694.
The deprecation table and the text-alias element set are generated from the
library's TSDoc by
scripts/gen-eslint-meta.mjs, not hand-listed. Thereplacement an autofix writes is parsed out of the note the library already
carries, so a rename reaches the plugin with the release that makes it. The
generator refuses to write an empty table, fails if a named anchor stops
matching, and now also asserts every replacement is a prop the element really
declares.

bestax-migrateemitting a deprecated spelling), #685 (the margin-and-paddingguide passing
backgroundColortoBox, which omits that prop), #688 (thelibrary's own

./constants), #694 (Theme'sradiusprop, whose type and behaviour disagree), #695 (a wall-clock assertion in
Card.test.tsxthat flakes under load), #696 (the root types not resolvingunder
moduleResolutionnode16/nodenext).The last one is worth a sentence here, because it came out of testing this
PR's own change and it argues for it. Typechecking the
./constantssubpathacross every resolution mode is what surfaced it: the subpath is clean under
all of them, including
nodenext, and the root is not, because the root'sdeclarations carry extensionless relative specifiers and that module has
none. Both findings are pre-existing and on the published package, neither is
caused by this branch, and the export map here is purely additive: the
"."entry is untouched.
