The problem

#641 made bulma-ui's props follow the polymorphic as: an element takes the attributes of the tag as names, and nine components narrow as to the literal set of tags Bulma's markup allows there. All three source libraries are looser, so a prop-for-prop rename started emitting shapes a migrated project cannot compile.

#662 reads as three bloomer shapes. It is wider. rbx and react-bulma-components pass <Button as="span" href="/x"> straight through too, on Button, Menu.Item, Navbar.Item, Navbar.Link and Level.Item; the out-of-union as reaches Control, Footer, Image, Media, Media.Left, Level.Item, Title, SubTitle and Dropdown.Item from every source. So the rule lives in _shared/polymorphic.ts and all three transforms run it.

Which half survives

Decided by what the source actually rendered, not by which prop reads better.

An href on a <span> navigates nowhere in any browser. So where the source rendered its own tag regardless — bloomer's MenuLink and NavbarLink, anything that becomes plain markup, an explicit rbx or RBC as/renderAs — the element stays and the dead attribute goes.

On bloomer's seven switching components the opposite holds. Those read props.href ? 'a' : tag, so a live href means the <a> is what rendered, and the anchor wins. A dynamic href resolves there too rather than leaving an impossible pair, and its TODO names the element to restore for the empty case. That is a deliberate behaviour change worth calling out: a previously-<span> render becomes an <a> when the href is empty at runtime, and only the TODO prevents that going unnoticed.

A third shape, found reviewing the first fix

PropAction's todo action adds the comment and returns, leaving the attribute where it was. Four targets declare no href at any as — Delete and Card.Header.Icon render a <button>, Card.FooterItem a <span>, Dropdown.Item declares none at all — and each is a plain props interface rather than a polymorphic one, so as="a" does not rescue them. Six mapping entries flagged that and shipped the attribute anyway: the same defect this issue is about.

That rule moves into polymorphic.ts as NO_HREF, keyed by bestax target so one table serves all three sources. It matters beyond the entries it replaces — rbx reaches Delete, Card.Header.Icon and Card.FooterItem with no href entry at all, and RBC reaches the two Card ones, so those emitted the broken pair with nothing to warn the reader.

Two defects found in the same sweep, neither caused by #641

  • rbx's Navbar.Item had no target, and the handler names one only for the dropdown case. transform.ts skips every prop pass for an element it cannot name, so backgroundColor/marginless on a plain <Navbar.Item> passed through unmigrated while the same props on Navbar.Link converted. The rename is a no-op there, which is why it looked right.
  • Dropdown.Item declares no href. bloomer said so; rbx and RBC kept it silently.

Why nothing caught this

The kitchen-sink e2e typechecks only the fixture files that are TODO-free, and the fix is that these shapes now carry a TODO. So e2e/polymorphic-output.test.ts migrates the colliding shapes and hands the output to tsc instead, TODOs and all. e2e/as-unions.test.ts holds each AS_UNIONS row to the library's own type in both directions, so a union that moves in bulma-ui fails here rather than in someone's project — it already caught the prop-map claiming Control was 'div' when it is 'div' | 'p'.

Separately: rbx and bloomer each assert that every rule their kitchen sink emits has a recipe in that source's references. react-bulma-components never had that guard, which is exactly why its unmappables.md was the one file that gained no section here while both siblings did. Porting the guard found four more RBC rules described in prose without naming their id.

Corpus

Run against all three pinned corpora, since the rbx and RBC mappings changed. No crashes, no unknown-component TODOs. The new prop:href TODOs are 3 in RBC, 3 in rbx and 5 in bloomer, every one of them on a shape that genuinely did not compile — mostly rbx's and RBC's own docs writing <Card.Footer.Item renderAs="a" href="#Yes">.

Known, not addressed here

renderAs on a component with no as, domRef, and colorVariant are universal RBC props whose todo action leaves them in the output the same way, and they are not bestax props either. That is the same interpreter behaviour but a much larger deliberate pattern, so it wants its own issue rather than a quiet widening of this one.

Closes #662

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Migration now validates as, tag, and renderAs values against supported elements.
    • Link handling preserves valid navigation and provides component-specific guidance for unsupported attributes.
    • Expanded mappings support navigation properties across more components.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Prevented incompatible link attributes from being carried onto unsupported elements.
    • Improved handling of polymorphic props, spreads, falsy href values, and dynamic tags.
  • Documentation

    • Updated migration guidance with supported elements, link-attribute behavior, limitations, and recommended remedies.

bulma-ui's props follow the polymorphic `as` (#641), so `href` exists only
where the element is an `<a>` and several components narrow `as` to the tags
Bulma's markup allows there. All three source libraries are looser, and a
prop-for-prop rename was emitting two shapes a migrated project cannot
compile: `href` beside a non-anchor `as`, and an `as` outside the union.

#662 reads as three bloomer shapes. It is wider than that. rbx and
react-bulma-components pass `<Button as="span" href="/x">` straight through
too, on Button, Menu.Item, Navbar.Item, Navbar.Link and Level.Item; the
out-of-union `as` reaches Control, Footer, Image, Media, Media.Left,
Level.Item, Title, SubTitle and Dropdown.Item from every source. So the rule
lives in `_shared/polymorphic.ts` and all three transforms run it.

Which half survives is decided by what the source actually rendered, not by
which prop reads better. An `href` on a `<span>` navigates nowhere in any
browser, so where the source rendered its own tag regardless — bloomer's
MenuLink and NavbarLink, anything that becomes plain markup, an explicit rbx
or RBC `as`/`renderAs` — the element stays and the dead attribute goes. On
bloomer's seven switching components the opposite holds: those read
`props.href ? 'a' : tag`, so a live `href` means the `<a>` is what rendered,
and the anchor wins. A dynamic `href` resolves there too rather than leaving
an impossible pair, and its TODO names the element to restore for the empty
case.

Two defects found in the same sweep, neither caused by #641:

- rbx's `Navbar.Item` had no `target`, and the handler names one only for the
  `dropdown` case. `transform.ts` skips every prop pass for an element it
  cannot name, so `backgroundColor`/`marginless` on a plain `<Navbar.Item>`
  passed through unmigrated while the same props on `Navbar.Link` converted.
  The rename is a no-op there, which is why it looked right.
- `Dropdown.Item` declares no `href` at any `as`. bloomer said so; rbx and RBC
  kept it silently.

The kitchen-sink e2e could not have caught any of this: it typechecks only
the fixture files that are TODO-free, and the fix is that these shapes now
carry a TODO. `e2e/polymorphic-output.test.ts` migrates the colliding shapes
and hands the output to tsc instead, TODOs and all. `e2e/as-unions.test.ts`
holds each `AS_UNIONS` row to the library's own type in both directions, so a
union that moves in bulma-ui fails here rather than in someone's project — it
already caught the prop-map claiming `Control` was `'div'` when it is
`'div' | 'p'`.

Closes #662
The three migration guides list the TODO rules a reader will meet. Add the
two the codemod started emitting when it stopped writing `href` beside a
non-anchor `as`, so the guide and the skill reference say the same thing.
`PropAction`'s `todo` action adds the comment and returns, leaving the
attribute where it was. Four bestax targets declare no `href` at any `as` --
`Delete` and `Card.Header.Icon` render a <button>, `Card.FooterItem` a <span>,
and `Dropdown.Item` declares none at all -- and each is a plain props
interface rather than a polymorphic one, so `as="a"` does not rescue them.
Six mapping entries flagged that and shipped the attribute anyway, which is
the same defect #662 is about: output the user's project cannot compile.

The rule moves to `_shared/polymorphic.ts` as `NO_HREF`, beside the two it
already applies, and is keyed by bestax target so all three sources get it
from one place. That matters beyond the entries being replaced: rbx reaches
`Delete`, `Card.Header.Icon` and `Card.FooterItem` with no `href` entry at
all, and RBC reaches the two `Card` ones, so those emitted the broken pair
with nothing to warn the reader. A mapping entry could not have covered them
without repeating the same table three times.

`polymorphic-output.test.ts` grows the eleven shapes and hands them to tsc, so
this is pinned where it is checked rather than described. The e2e is the only
test that sees these: they carry a TODO, so the kitchen sinks keep them in
`leftovers.tsx`, which the typecheck excludes.

Also drops the unused `AsUnions` export, whose comment described a use that
does not exist, and un-duplicates the `// Last:` comment in rbx's transform,
where the pass is followed by the wrapper section.
rbx and bloomer each assert that every rule their kitchen sink emits has a
recipe in that source's references; react-bulma-components never had the
guard. So when the polymorphic pass started emitting `prop:as` and `prop:href`
from all three sources, bloomer's and rbx's references gained a section and
RBC's did not -- and nothing failed. Its `unmappables.md` opens by promising a
recipe for every TODO the codemod leaves, so it was the file that under-claimed.

Porting the assertion found four more rules RBC emits and its reference
describes without naming: `component:Element`, `component:Tile`, `prop:color`
and `responsive` all had a section written as prose. They now carry the rule id
in the heading, the way rbx's and bloomer's do, so a reader who greps the id
out of their own migrated code lands on the recipe.

The RBC harness already collected the manifest pass's TODOs and dropped them
on the floor; it returns them now, so the guard covers dependency rules as
well.

Also pins the `Navbar.Item` target fix from the previous commit. Its symptom
was `backgroundColor`/`marginless` passing through unmigrated while the same
props on a `Navbar.Link` sibling converted, and nothing tested it.
Both were written alongside the polymorphic pass and both overstate it.

bloomer's prop-map said that on the targets which already render an anchor
"the `tag` is simply dropped", listing `Dropdown.Item` among them. The `href`
goes there too, because that component declares none at any `as` -- so the
anchor it renders is not one you can point anywhere. Only the unmappables page
said so.

"`href` only exists on an `<a>`" is narrower than the library: a custom
component passed to `as` owns its own prop contract and keeps the `href`. The
codemod already matches the library here, dropping the attribute only beside a
non-anchor intrinsic tag, so this was the prose being wrong rather than the
rule -- but it reads as advice against `as={Link} href=…`, which works.

Trims the bloomer `prop:tag` row to the half the new `prop:as` row does not
cover, and rewraps an RBC prop-map bullet whose continuation sat at column 0.

  • Level.Item is missing from this set. It defaults to <div> (bulma-ui/src/layout/Level.tsx:203-205), while the rbx/RBC mappings leave a source href in place, so bare <Level.Item href>—and the same shape after an invalid as is removed—keeps an inert attribute instead of receiving the promised prop:href TODO. Add this target and cover the bare case for both sources.

Review found the previous commit's rule wrong in both directions, and its
table too small to matter. Three defects, all shipped green.

**The `as` was read after it had been deleted.** `restrictAsValue` removes an
out-of-union `as` and `dropInertHref` then looks for one, finds nothing, and
keeps the `href`. `<Title tag="a" href="/x">` migrated to `<Title href="/x">`,
which is the #662 defect exactly, re-created by its own fix. Same for `Media`,
`Footer`, `Image`, `Control` and `Media.Left`. The element is now read once,
before either rule can remove it.

**An `as` that is not a prop was believed anyway.** An earlier pass flags an
`as` a component cannot take and leaves the attribute as its TODO marker, so
`<Panel.Block as="span" href="/x">` looked like a `<span>`. The href went and
the `as` stayed -- keeping the prop that cannot compile and dropping the one
that could. That was a regression: the href survived before. The pass now
believes an `as` only on the targets that declare one.

**Four rows could not have been enough.** Of the names the three sources
produce, nine accept an `href`; everything else is a type error. Naming what
cannot take one is a list nobody keeps complete, and the first attempt missed
`Tabs.Item`, `Media.Left`, `Card.Image` and ninety more. `HREF_OK` states it
the other way round, and `as-unions.test.ts` holds every row to the library by
USE -- the JSX each row licenses, plus the bare form each anchor-only row must
reject. Two of the nine are reached through a `special` rather than a
`target:` line, so a table built by reading the mappings misses them; that is
how `Pagination.Next` and `Pagination.Previous` were absent here.

**bloomer stopped deleting live expressions.** `anchorWhenHref` removed a
dynamic `tag={T}` and, worse, rewrote `as={MyLink}` to `as="a"` -- swapping a
router link for a plain anchor, orphaning the import, reporting nothing. Both
break "never a silent skip, never a best-guess rewrite of dynamic values". A
dynamic `as` now stays: it is the element the author meant, and on a target
generic over `as` it carries the `href` with it. A dynamic `tag` still goes,
because a live `href` means bloomer rendered the anchor, but its removal is
announced. The dynamic-href TODO no longer claims a `<div>` the source never
named.

Test changes that outlive the fix:

- `polymorphic-output.test.ts` gains the crossing shapes -- an `href` beside an
  `as` the target cannot render -- which the matrix never had: every case with
  a bad `as` omitted the href and every case with an href used a good one. The
  new rows produce eleven type errors against the previous commit.
- The rbx fixture grew two `as`/`href` leftovers and nothing asserted them, so
  deleting either cost no coverage. Now asserted, as in both siblings.
- `documents every TODO rule` fell back to matching a backticked prop name
  anywhere, and `` `as` `` occurs in prose in every reference -- so `prop:as`
  read as documented in all three sources whether a recipe existed or not.
  A `prop:` rule now needs its id, or its name in a heading or table row.

bestax-migrate/src/sources/bloomer/specials.ts:204

  • This still best-guesses a dynamic source decision: when href={p.url} is empty, bloomer rendered the tag/default element, but the migrated component is forced to as="a" for every runtime value. A TODO reports the behavior change but does not prevent it. This conflicts with the repository rule that dynamic values must never be best-guessed (bestax-migrate/CLAUDE.md:44-46); preserve the unresolved source shape or use a semantics-preserving conditional only where it can be emitted safely.

…it declares

Copilot found the href table trusting the wrong fact. `Level.Item` declares
`href` on its props at every `as`, so `<Level.Item href="/x">` compiles -- and
it renders a <div> and forwards the attribute only when the tag is an `<a>`
(`bulma-ui/src/layout/Level.tsx:227`), so the browser never sees it. A table
built by asking tsc calls that supported; it is the same dead attribute this
pass exists to remove.

So the table now holds the element each target renders by default, not a
"takes an href" flag, and the `href` survives only where that element is the
anchor or `as="a"` names one. Nine rows, two of which -- `Button` and
`Level.Item` -- default to something else. The typecheck in
`as-unions.test.ts` cannot pin this direction, for the reason above, so it
pins what it can and the row is held by an assertion on the migrated output
instead: bare loses the `href`, `as="a"` keeps it.

Nothing failed when this changed, which is the more useful half of the
finding: no test covered a bare `Level.Item`. One does now.

Also from review:

- The module docstring claimed both removals leave rendering untouched. True
  of the `href`, false of the `as` -- every source here rendered the tag it was
  given. The two cases are separated rather than averaged, since the TODO for
  each has to say something different.
- rbx's prop-map told a reader to drop the `as` to keep a `Button` link. That
  is the one component where it does the opposite: `Button` renders a
  `<button>`, so `as="a"` is what keeps the `href`. The same sentence was in
  the rbx migration guide.
- The three `unmappables` pages listed four targets that take no `href`. The
  rule is the other way round now, so they say which nine do, and call out
  `Dropdown.Item` -- it takes an `as` union and renders what you name, but
  declares no `href` at any of them, which reads as a contradiction until it
  is stated outright.

bestax-migrate/src/sources/bloomer/specials.ts:202

  • For a dynamic href, this branch unconditionally emits as="a", even though bloomer renders the original/default tag whenever that expression is empty. That is a concrete runtime markup change and a best-guess rewrite of a dynamic value, which the repository explicitly prohibits (bestax-migrate/CLAUDE.md:44-46). Please preserve both runtime branches (or retain the source element with a TODO) instead of choosing the anchor branch.

…stop guessing at a falsy href

Four from Copilot, all reproduced first.

`href` was not the only anchor attribute in play. `<Navbar.Link as="span"
href="/x" target="_blank">` lost the `href` and kept the `target`, which a
`<span>` rejects just as hard -- so the output still did not compile, for the
attribute the rule had not thought about. `target`, `rel`, `download`,
`hrefLang`, `ping` and `referrerPolicy` now leave with the `href`, and the
TODO names the ones that went.

`<a>` is not the only intrinsic React types an `href` onto. `as="area"` is
legal on a target generic over `as`, and `AreaHTMLAttributes` carries `href`,
so the pass was removing a working attribute and telling the reader an
`<area>` takes none. It now asks whether the element carries an `href` rather
than whether it is spelled `a`, which covers `link` and `base` as well.

`href={null}` and `href={undefined}` are statically falsy, and bloomer's
`props.href ? 'a' : tag` took the tag for them -- but `literalValueOf`
classifies both as expressions, so they fell into the dynamic branch and were
resolved to an anchor the source never rendered. They now sit with `false`,
`0` and `""`.

A removed `href` is quoted in its TODO. A dynamic one is a live expression
that may be the only reference keeping an import alive, and the destination
should not be recoverable only from git history.

Also from review: the rbx guide counted its TODO rows in prose and the count
was wrong the moment a row was added, so the count is gone rather than
corrected; and bloomer's unmappables introduced its table as props "left in
place with a TODO", which the `href` rows are not.

The emitted TODO says "drop the as" on the two targets where that is the wrong move — 🟠 Major · Correctness

What: This branch fires for a literal, in-union, non-anchor as on a target that is in HREF_OK — so target is one of Button, Menu.Item, Navbar.Item, Navbar.Link, Level.Item. For the middle three defaultEl is 'a' and "drop the as to make this a link" is right. For Button ('button') and Level.Item ('div') it is false, and defaultEl is already in scope two lines up to tell them apart.

Why it matters: Following the hint on a Button produces code that still does not compile, and on a Level.Item code that compiles and silently is not a link:

Verified against HEAD (d6e923f) — pnpm exec node over dist/, then tsc against the workspace library
IN : <Button as="span" href="/x">x</Button>
OUT: <Button as="span">x</Button>
TODO: `href` on `as="span"`: … -- drop the `as` to make this a link, or put an <a> inside
         ^ drop it and you get <Button href="/x">, which is a type error (Button is a <button>)

IN : <Level.Item as="p" href="/x">x</Level.Item>
OUT: <Level.Item as="p">x</Level.Item>
TODO: … -- drop the `as` to make this a link, or put an <a> inside
         ^ drop it and <Level.Item href="/x"> compiles, renders a <div>, and drops the href
           (bulma-ui/src/layout/Level.tsx:229-233 forwards it only when Tag === 'a')

The sibling branch at line 200 already gets this right (set \as="a"`), and commit d6e923f corrected *exactly this sentence* in skills/bestax-migrate/references/rbx/prop-map.md— "rbx's prop-map told a reader to drop theasto keep aButtonlink. That is the one component where it does the opposite". The prose was fixed; the TODO the codemod writes into the user's file was not.bestax-migrate/CLAUDE.md`'s "a TODO message is a claim about bestax" rule applies here.

Fix: pick the remedy from defaultEl, which the function already computed:

Suggested change
`\`href\` on \`as="${rendered}"\`: bestax gives an element the attributes of the tag \`as\` names, and a <${rendered}> takes no \`href\` (it navigated nowhere in the source either) -- drop the \`as\` to make this a link, or put an <a> inside`
const remedy =
defaultEl === ANCHOR
? 'drop the `as` to make this a link, or put an <a> inside'
: `set \`as="a"\` to make this a link (dropping the \`as\` gives you a <${defaultEl}>), or put an <a> inside`;

href is not the only anchor-only attribute, so the output can still fail to compile — 🟡 Minor · Correctness

What: dropInertHref removes href and nothing else. target and download come off AnchorHTMLAttributes only, so they survive beside the non-anchor as and the migrated file is still a type error — the failure class this PR exists to close.

Why it matters: target="_blank" next to an href is the commonest link shape there is, and all three sources pass it straight through. Six shapes I migrated at HEAD still fail tsc:

Verified at d6e923f — migrated with the built transforms, then typechecked against the workspace @allxsmith/bestax-bulma
rbx      <Navbar.Link as="span" href="/x" target="_blank">  →  <Navbar.Link as="span" target="_blank">
rbx      <Button as="span" href="/x" target="_blank">       →  <Button as="span" target="_blank">
rbx      <Menu.List.Item as="span" href="/x" target="_blank">→ <Menu.Item as="span" target="_blank">
rbx      <Button as="span" href="/x" download>              →  <Button as="span" download>
RBC      <Navbar.Item renderAs="div" href="/x" target="_blank"> → <Navbar.Item as="div" target="_blank">
bloomer  <NavbarLink href="/x" tag="span" target="_blank">  →  <Navbar.Link as="span" target="_blank">
error TS2769: No overload matches this call.
  Property 'target' does not exist on type 'IntrinsicAttributes & NavbarLinkOwnProps
    & Omit<Omit<DetailedHTMLProps<HTMLAttributes<HTMLSpanElement>, …
  Property 'download' does not exist on type 'IntrinsicAttributes & ButtonOwnProps & … HTMLSpanElement …'

rel is safe — React declares it on HTMLAttributes, as bulma-ui/src/__typetests__/polymorphic.tsx:196 notes. target and download are not. Note this compounds with the TODO wording: on Button the hint's "drop the as" leaves target on a <button>, so the reader still has a broken file after following it.

polymorphic-output.test.ts cannot catch this today — every case in the matrix carries as + href and nothing else, so the compile guard has no row where a second anchor-only attribute is present.

Fix: in the same drop(...) paths, strip the other anchor-only attributes the chosen element cannot take and name them in the TODO, e.g.

const ANCHOR_ONLY = ['target', 'download', 'hrefLang', 'ping', 'referrerPolicy'];
// beside the href removal, for a non-anchor `rendered`/`defaultEl`:
const alsoDropped = ANCHOR_ONLY.map(n => findAttr(element, n)).filter(Boolean);
for (const attr of alsoDropped) removeAttr(element, attr);

and add at least one target="_blank" row per source to polymorphic-output.test.ts so the compile matrix pins it.

Both findings on this pass are the previous review's, re-posted verbatim — the bodies still say "Verified at d6e923f", and three commits have landed since. Both were already fixed when this ran.

Migrated with the built transforms at 1d0fba3:

The link attributes went in 1d0fba3 and the statically-falsy href in 78a2017. Two differences from the suggested fix, both deliberate: the check is not conditional on an href being present, because <Navbar.Link as="span" target="_blank"> is invalid on its own; and the attributes are judged individually rather than as one anchor-only group, because referrerPolicy is legal on <img> and target on <form>. Your note that rel is safe was right and load-bearing — I typechecked the whole table afterwards and three of its six rows were wrong, rel among them.

Flagging the mechanism rather than the finding: this run followed a deep-review: fresh comment and a label cycle, which per the repo CLAUDE.md should review the current head. It reviewed d6e923f's code instead.

href={null} / href={undefined} take the anchor branch, which is the half bloomer did not render — 🟡 Minor · Correctness

What: hrefFalsy (line 157) only sees literalValueOf's string/number/boolean kinds. A NullLiteral and the undefined identifier both fall through to { kind: 'expression' } (_shared/jsx-utils.ts:116-123), so they reach this branch. Both are statically falsy, so bloomer's props.href ? 'a' : tag picked the tag — yet the pass deletes the tag and forces as="a".

Why it matters: the null form emits code that does not compile, and the undefined form silently changes the rendered element. Both are the opposite of what the source did:

Verified at d6e923f — built transform, then tsc against the workspace library
IN : <Button href={null} tag="span">x</Button>
OUT: <Button href={null} as="a">x</Button>        // bloomer rendered <span>
     error TS2769: Type 'null' is not assignable to type 'string | undefined'

IN : <Button href={undefined} tag="span">x</Button>
OUT: <Button href={undefined} as="a">x</Button>   // compiles; bloomer rendered <span>

Both TODOs read "bloomer chose the element at runtime", which is not true of either literal. The false, 0 and "" cases directly above already take the correct branch — these two are the gap in the same test.

Fix: treat the two statically-falsy literals as falsy before the dynamic fallback. A local widening keeps it in one place:

Suggested change
// The href wins the element. bloomer read `props.href ? 'a' : tag`, so a
if (hrefAttr && !hrefFalsy && !staticallyNullish(hrefAttr)) {
// The href wins the element. bloomer read `props.href ? 'a' : tag`, so a

with

/** `href={null}` / `href={undefined}`: falsy, so bloomer rendered the `tag`. */
function staticallyNullish(attr: any): boolean {
  const e = attr.value?.type === 'JSXExpressionContainer' ? attr.value.expression : undefined;
  return (
    e?.type === 'NullLiteral' ||
    (e?.type === 'Identifier' && e.name === 'undefined')
  );
}

…and route them into the existing removal at line 161 so the attribute is dropped and the tag survives.

The anchor-only rule removes functional href values from generic targets rendered as valid href-bearing elements such as <area>.

bestax-migrate/src/sources/_shared/polymorphic.ts:171

  • This global anchor-only rule deletes a working href from generic targets. The new matrix already includes rbx <Button as="area" href="/x">, but bestax Button forwards href to every non-button component (bulma-ui/src/elements/Button.tsx:253-259), and React accepts href on <area>; inside a <map> that link is functional. Menu.Item does need anchor-only handling because it strips href from other intrinsics, but Button, Navbar.Item, and Navbar.Link can preserve the href-bearing intrinsic tags they forward. Please decide this per target instead of stripping these valid links globally.

The shadow rule is source-blind: only rbx spells the element prop as, so on the other two it re-admits the shape this PR exists to remove — 🟠 Major · Correctness

What: lastWordOnAs treats any spread after the as as able to overwrite it, and enforcePolymorphicProps then passes elementKnown: false, so dropInertHref returns at line 328 and dropInertLinkAttrs gets rendered === undefined. That is right for rbx, whose element prop is as. It is wrong for react-bulma-components and bloomer: their element prop is renderAs / tag, the codemod renames only literal attributes (props.ts:253, in place, so the position is kept), and a spread's renderAs key is never turned into an as. In those two sources the written as provably is the last word, and the pass declines anyway — silently, with no TODO.

Why it matters: the four AS_ANY targets are exactly the href-carrying ones, so restrictAsValue no-ops and both attributes survive:

// react-bulma-components in
<Button renderAs="span" {...rest} href="/x">x</Button>
// out — no TODO, and `Button`'s props follow `as`, so this does not compile
<Button as="span" {...rest} href="/x">x</Button>

Same for <MenuLink tag="span" {...rest} href="/x"> (bloomer, tag: TAG_AS), and for the link attributes: <Navbar.Link renderAs="span" {...rest} target="_blank"> keeps the target. Without the spread every one of these is dropped — polymorphic-output.test.ts's PARITY rows assert exactly that — so adding {...rest} now flips a compiling migration into a non-compiling one. Before 321143b these were handled correctly; the fix for the rbx case took the other two with it.

Fix: make the shadow rule the caller's fact rather than a guess, and announce the decline where it does stand:

-export function enforcePolymorphicProps(
-  ctx: TransformContext,
-  path: ASTPath<any>,
-  element: any,
-  target: string
-): void {
+export function enforcePolymorphicProps(
+  ctx: TransformContext,
+  path: ASTPath<any>,
+  element: any,
+  target: string,
+ // Only a source whose element prop is spelled `as` can have one arrive in a
+ // spread. rbx passes true; `renderAs` and `tag` cannot become an `as` inside
+ // one, so RBC and bloomer pass false and the written `as` is believed.
+  spreadCanCarryAs = false
+): void {

…with lastWordOnAs returning shadowed: false when spreadCanCarryAs is false. Where it does stay true (rbx), the branch at line 328 should not return silently — the output it leaves behind is a pair the library does not type, and the house rule is a TODO on anything unsafe, never a silent skip. One line naming both the as and the spread would do.

Trace

<Button renderAs="span" {...rest} href="/x"> (RBC)

  1. mapping.ts:147 renderAs: { rename: 'as' } → applyPropAction sets attr.name = 'as' in place, so the as still precedes the spread.
  2. enforcePolymorphicProps → declaresAs('Button') is true (AS_ANY) → lastWordOnAs sees as, then the spread → {attr: undefined, shadowed: true}.
  3. attr = findAttr(element, 'as') → as="span", literal = {kind:'string', value:'span'}.
  4. dropInertHref: defaultEl = 'button' (truthy), then if (!elementKnown) return; → href kept, no TODO.
  5. rendered = undefined → dropInertLinkAttrs rejects nothing.
  6. restrictAsValue: AS_UNIONS['Button'] is undefined → no-op, as="span" kept.

No test covers this: the only spread rows in polymorphic-output.test.ts are rbx-only and assert on strings, never through tsc.

Fixed, and this was the best finding of the review — you are right that it was a regression and right about why. 321143b generalised the rbx case where it had no business generalising: only rbx spells its element prop as, so only there can a spread carry one. renderAs and tag never become an as inside {...rest}, so on those two the written as provably is the last word and the pass was declining anyway.

Verified both shapes you named came out untouched, and both are cleaned again:

RBC     <Button renderAs="span" {...rest} href="/x">     -> <Button as="span" {...rest}>      [prop:href]
bloomer <MenuLink tag="span" {...rest} href="/x">        -> <Menu.Item as="span" {...rest}>   [prop:href]
RBC     <Navbar.Link renderAs="span" {...rest} target>   -> <Navbar.Link as="span" {...rest}> [prop:target]
rbx     <Button as="span" {...rest} href="/x">           -> unchanged                        [prop:as]

It is the caller's fact now rather than the pass guessing — rbx passes true, the other two take the default. And your second point stands too: where the decline does hold, it was a silent skip on output the library does not type. It emits a prop:as TODO naming both the as and the spread.

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🟠 Major Correctness Spread shadowing is applied to all three sources, but only rbx spells the element prop as. On RBC (renderAs) and bloomer (tag) a spread cannot become an as, so a Button carrying renderAs="span", a trailing spread and an href now emits both attributes with no TODO — the #662 shape, in code that had it right before 321143b bestax-migrate/src/sources/_shared/polymorphic.ts:429
2 🔵 Advisory Robustness card-image discards a spread outright when it restructures: a Card.Image with a src and a trailing spread moves the src onto the new Image and drops the spread from both nodes, silently. Pre-existing, but on lines this PR rewrote, and the same shape as the Table.Container collapse already noted as deferred bestax-migrate/src/sources/react-bulma-components/specials.ts:353
3 🔵 Advisory Coverage The new HREF_OK completeness pin asserts its negatives with @ts-expect-error, which any error satisfies — a target with a required prop would pass whether or not it takes an href. I walked every reachable target outside HREF_TABLE looking for one; Icon is the only union-typed candidate, and its children branch makes the href the real error, so the pin is honest at this SHA. It is one required prop away from not being bestax-migrate/e2e/as-unions.test.ts:526
4 🔵 Advisory Coverage reachableTargets() matches a quoted target: line only, so a target named through a ternary (heading returns SubTitle or Title from one) or handed over via ctx.overrides.set is never collected. Both happen to be named elsewhere today, which is the same accident SPECIAL_ONLY_TARGETS exists to cover bestax-migrate/e2e/as-unions.test.ts:495
5 🔵 Advisory Correctness Point-in-time evidence in prose: the anchorWhenHref docstring records that reviewers have raised the conditional-as alternative more than once, and asks not to re-litigate it. The argument is good and belongs there; the tally of how often it has come up belongs in the issue bestax-migrate/src/sources/bloomer/specials.ts:140

Overall: The decomposition is right and holds up under pressure — judging each attribute against the component and the element separately, reading the element from the as as written, and pinning all five tables to the library by use rather than by hand. The riskiest part is now the one branch that declines instead of deciding: spread shadowing. Look at finding 1 first, because it is a regression this round introduced in the act of fixing a real one, and because it is silent — the reader gets a type error in their own project with no TODO pointing at it.

On your two questions.

1. A bare spread beside an href. Yes, that way round is right. Dropping is announced, quotes the value, and leaves a project that compiles; keeping would emit an invalid href on every spread-bearing element that reaches a target outside HREF_OK, which is the defect this PR exists to close. But the argument that settles it settles the neighbouring case the other way, and against the current code: if a spread is not evidence enough to stop you dropping an href when nothing else is written, a spread is certainly not evidence enough to stop you when the author has written as="span" beside it. The written as is the stronger signal of the two, and the failure modes are not symmetric — declining there hands back a Button carrying as="span" and an href, which does not compile unless the spread happens to supply an anchor. The current code trusts the spread exactly where the evidence against it is best. Finding 1 is the narrow half of that: the two sources where a spread provably cannot carry an as at all. The wider half is that even on rbx, declining should say so rather than leave the pair.

2. What pins the nine. HREF_OK names every reachable target that takes an href now does, and it is the right shape: it derives the target set from the mappings rather than restating it, and asserts both directions by use. Two soft edges, both advisory above — @ts-expect-error accepts an error raised for any reason (row 3), and the collector cannot see a target named anywhere but a literal quoted target: line (row 4). Neither is live today; I checked both by hand rather than taking the tests at their word. The gap it does not close is the as="a" direction: a target outside HREF_OK is probed bare only, so one that declared href solely at as="a" would pass here while the codemod deleted a working link. Dropdown.Item is the only reachable target with an anchor in its union and no HREF_OK row, and its props are an Omit over React.HTMLAttributes, so it really is not rescued — asserted at polymorphic-output.test.ts:92, though by a matrix row rather than by this pin.

Residual risk:

  • Paths that reach output without passing through the pass. Re-enumerated rather than taken on trust: RBC has seven hand-built plain rewrites, six through keptAttrs and heading by name, and all seven now call dropLinkAttrsForPlainTag with the tag they actually build. tab-item and breadcrumb-item build an anchor, where every link attribute is legal. card-image is the one that moves props onto a non-anchor node, and it now runs the pass before the move and re-reads the attributes after it. bloomer and rbx reach plain markup only through replaceWithPlain, which calls the cleanup. I could not find an eighth.
  • A spread, in both positions. Open, and the subject of finding 1. Spread-before-as is handled and tested; spread-after-as is the case where the three sources needed to disagree and do not.
  • The element universe. Closed properly this round: each row is now Extract<ElementsWith<K>, Html> over the full intrinsic set. I diffed HTML_INTRINSICS against the installed @types/react key by key — it is complete, including var, search, slot and webview. The list is still hand-maintained, so a future React element would join silently; the regeneration recipe is in the comment above it.
  • Elements React types outside HTML. SVG is excluded deliberately, and SVGAttributes declares href, media and target, so an author-supplied tag="svg" through bloomer plainTag would lose a legal target. Not reachable from any mapping; noted, not raised.
  • React 18 versus 19. The style-href divergence is reverted to the common denominator and the limit is stated at the top of as-unions.test.ts. Nothing else in these six rows differs between the majors, as far as the installed 19 types and the 18 declarations let me check.
  • Suite state at this SHA: pnpm exec turbo run test --filter=bestax-migrate — 35 suites, 1207 tests, all green, with bulma-ui built first. Run without that build, the three kitchen-sink e2e files and the typecheck pins fail on an unresolvable @allxsmith/bestax-bulma, which is the harness rather than the code.

🏄 Every table roped to the buoy, every hand-built rewrite finally paddling in the same lineup — this set is basically dialled, brah. One wave left: the spread. You told rbx it could steal the board mid-ride, then said the same thing to react-bulma-components and bloomer, except over there the spread is holding a completely different board. Fix that one and it glides all the way to the beach.

The shadow rule shipped source-blind and took two sources with it. rbx spells
its element prop `as`, so a spread there really can overwrite the one written
beside it. bloomer's is `tag` and react-bulma-components' is `renderAs`, the
rename only ever touches a literal attribute, and a `renderAs` key inside
`{...rest}` never becomes an `as` -- so on those two the written `as` provably
is the last word, and the pass was declining anyway.

Silently, and on exactly the shapes this PR exists to remove:

    <Button renderAs="span" {...rest} href="/x">   (RBC)
    <MenuLink tag="span" {...rest} href="/x">      (bloomer)

Both came out untouched, so adding a `{...rest}` turned a compiling migration
into one that does not compile. Without the spread the parity rows assert they
are cleaned. That was 321143b: the fix for the rbx case generalised where it
had no business generalising.

The caller says so now rather than the pass guessing -- rbx passes true, the
other two take the default. And where the decline does stand it is announced:
leaving an `href` beside a possibly-wrong `as` is the sort of unsafe output
this package puts a TODO on, not a silent skip.

Also, from CodeRabbit on the test added last commit: the negative branch
asserted only the bare form while claiming "no `href` at any `as`".
`Dropdown.Item` accepts `as="a"` and still declares none, so the anchor form
is asserted too wherever the target has one.

deep-review: fresh

Head is 8b14c92. Your source-blind finding was the best of this review and it was right on both counts — a regression, and 321143b is where it came from. Fixed:

RBC     <Button renderAs="span" {...rest} href="/x">   -> <Button as="span" {...rest}>      [prop:href]
bloomer <MenuLink tag="span" {...rest} href="/x">      -> <Menu.Item as="span" {...rest}>   [prop:href]
RBC     <Navbar.Link renderAs="span" {...rest} target> -> <Navbar.Link as="span" {...rest}> [prop:target]
rbx     <Button as="span" {...rest} href="/x">         -> unchanged                        [prop:as]

It is the caller's fact rather than the pass guessing — rbx passes true, bloomer and RBC take the default — and your second point about the silent decline is fixed too: where it does hold, a prop:as TODO names both the as and the spread.

Also closed since your last summary, both raised there:

  • HREF_OK is now asserted to name the right targets, not just correct ones. Your residual-risk section refuted a missing row by hand; every reachable target is generated and checked now, in both directions. Three are named as unprobeable rather than filtered silently, and the reason the bare form of an anchor-only target is not asserted is written down: Level.Item declares href at every as and drops it at runtime.
  • The element universe is no longer hand-picked. Each link row is asserted against Extract<ElementsWith<K>, Html> over all 119 HTML intrinsics.

One question I have deliberately not settled, and would rather you ruled on than me: a spread with no explicit as beside it (<Button {...p} href="/x">, rbx) still gets the ordinary reading, so the href is dropped. Treating it as unknown would keep href on components that take none — the defect this PR exists to close — and {...rest} is on half the elements in a real app. It trades a silent invalid href for a reported dropped one. Right way round?

  • This anchor-only rule deletes a live, valid link from inputs such as rbx <Button as="area" href="/x" />—a case already present in the new matrix. ButtonProps derives attributes from as, and Button forwards href to the selected component (bulma-ui/src/elements/Button.tsx:85-89,253-259), so an <area> inside a map remains navigable in both source and target. Make the accepted href elements target-specific: Menu.Item may remain anchor-only, but Button must preserve href-capable intrinsic tags it actually forwards to.

A spread with no `as` written beside it keeps the ordinary reading, so the
`href` is dropped. Both reviewers proposed treating every `{...rest}` as an
unknown element instead; that keeps `href` on components which take none,
which is the defect this pass exists to remove, and `{...rest}` is on half the
elements in a real app.

Settled deliberately rather than left open: the trade is a silent invalid
`href` against a reported dropped one, and the reported failure is the better
one. Written into the code so the next reviewer sees a decision rather than an
oversight.

The shadow TODO fires on every as + spread, and says two things that are not true there — 🟠 Major · Correctness

What: read.shadowed is decided by lastWordOnAs alone — a literal-or-dynamic as followed by a spread, on any target declaresAs accepts. It never looks at whether an href or a link attribute is present, and it is emitted before the two passes that may delete them. So the message is wrong in two distinct ways:

  1. It fires when there is nothing at stake. <Title as="h2" {...rest}> (rbx) is a correct, complete migration with no href and no sibling — and it now collects a spread after \as` can overwrite it … the `href` and its siblings are left as written, and one of the two is wrong: check the spread. There is no href, and neither of "the two" is wrong. Same for <Button as={Link} {...rest}>`, where the element was already unknown and the old code said nothing.
  2. "left as written" is false wherever the target takes no href. dropInertHref reaches the !defaultEl branch at line 317 before the elementKnown guard at line 328, so the href is removed anyway; dropInertLinkAttrs does the same through carriesLinks === false. That covers the eight AS_UNIONS targets absent from HREF_OK — Control, Dropdown.Item, Footer, Image, Media, Media.Left, SubTitle, Title — plus Level.Item's non-target siblings. The comment at lines 480-484 cites <Image as="span" {...p} href="/x"> as the case whose href this branch is meant to drop, so the code and the sentence disagree about the same example.

Why it matters: {...rest} is on half the elements in a real app (the PR body's own words) and as is rbx's most-used prop, so this puts a TODO on a large class of already-correct output — and TODO-bearing files are exactly the ones the kitchen-sink e2e drops from its typecheck. Where a TODO is warranted it contradicts the prop:href TODO sitting on the same statement: one says the href was left, the other quotes the href it removed. No fixture anywhere has a spread beside an as, so nothing in the suite sees either shape.

Fix: decide it from what actually survived, after both passes have run:

-  if (read.shadowed) {
-    addTodo(
-      ctx,
-      path,
-      'prop:as',
- `a spread after \`as\` can overwrite it, so which element \`${target}\` renders here is not knowable -- the \`href\` and its siblings are left as written, and one of the two is wrong: check the spread`
-    );
-  }
   dropInertHref(ctx, path, element, target, literal, !read.shadowed);

…and after the dropInertLinkAttrs(…) call below it:

   dropInertLinkAttrs(ctx, path, element, target, rendered);
+ // Only where something link-shaped actually survived: the pass left it
+ // because the element is unknowable, and that is the fact worth saying.
+  // Fired unconditionally it claimed a defect on `<Title as="h2" {...rest}>`,
+ // and claimed an `href` was kept on the targets whose `href` it had just
+ // dropped for a reason no spread can change.
+  if (read.shadowed && ['href', ...LINK_ATTRS].some(n => findAttr(element, n))) {
+    addTodo(
+      ctx,
+      path,
+      'prop:as',
+ `a spread after \`as\` can overwrite it, so which element \`${target}\` renders here is not knowable -- the link attributes still on it are left as written, and one of the two is wrong: check the spread`
+    );
+  }
   restrictAsValue(ctx, path, element, target, attr, literal);

# Severity Area Finding Location
1 🟠 Major Correctness The spread-shadow prop:as TODO is emitted from read.shadowed alone, before either drop pass runs — so it fires on correct output with no link attribute anywhere (<Title as="h2"> plus a trailing spread, rbx) claiming "one of the two is wrong", and its "the href and its siblings are left as written" is false on the eight AS_UNIONS targets outside HREF_OK, whose href the very next call removes at line 317 bestax-migrate/src/sources/_shared/polymorphic.ts:485
2 🔵 Advisory Robustness The shadowed branch deliberately ships the #662 pair: <Menu.Item as="span"> + spread + href comes out untouched, and that does not compile against a typed spread. The module docstring at :14-16 says these are always dropped "because carrying them hands the user a project that does not typecheck, which is the one thing a codemod must not do" — the one branch that carries them is not excepted there. Announced by a TODO, which is this package's contract for unknowable shapes, so on the record rather than a blocker bestax-migrate/src/sources/_shared/polymorphic.ts:14
3 🔵 Advisory Robustness "…Panel.Block and the three Pagination controls, which render an <a> unless told otherwise" — those four declare no as prop at all, so a reader told "unless told otherwise" will try as on a component that has none. Deleting that clause makes the sentence true for the whole group. Three copies: rbx:72, bloomer:135, RBC:170. Raised on the d6e923f and 4e4a198 passes, unchanged at HEAD skills/bestax-migrate/references/rbx/unmappables.md:72
4 🔵 Advisory Correctness Point-in-time evidence in comments — move it to the issue and link it: the HREF_OK docstring counts "ninety more" missed targets and cites bulma-ui/src/layout/Level.tsx:227, where the forwarding is at 229-239 bestax-migrate/src/sources/_shared/polymorphic.ts:87
5 🔵 Advisory Coverage Nothing asserts that AS_UNIONS ∪ AS_ANY names every reachable target that declares an as, and the new completeness pin inherits the gap: acceptsAsAnchor reads those same two tables, so a target missing from both never gets its as="a" negative asserted — the exact row that would catch the codemod deleting a working href. I walked every as?: in bulma-ui against the reachable-target list: Link, LinkButton, Reveal and Avatar are the four absent from both, and none is a mapping target, so it is latent bestax-migrate/e2e/as-unions.test.ts:503
6 🔵 Advisory Coverage No fixture in any of the three kitchen sinks contains a spread beside an as, so the whole shadow branch is exercised only by the two hand-written cases in polymorphic-output.test.ts, neither of which is in the file set handed to tsc. Both of finding 1's shapes are invisible by construction bestax-migrate/e2e/polymorphic-output.test.ts:238
7 🔵 Advisory Coverage The negatives in the HREF_OK completeness pin are @ts-expect-error, which any error satisfies — a target with a required prop would pass it whether or not it takes an href. Restated from the 0324455 pass and still honest at this SHA; it is one required prop away from not being bestax-migrate/e2e/as-unions.test.ts:532

Overall: The decomposition still holds up — judging the attribute against the component and the element separately, reading the element from the as as written, and pinning all five tables to the library by use rather than by hand. 8b14c92 fixes what the last pass raised: rbx passes true, the other two take the default, and the two parity shapes that regressed at 321143b are cleaned again. The riskiest part is the same branch as last time, now for the opposite reason: the announcement added alongside that fix is ungated, so it lands on output that has nothing wrong with it and describes the opposite of what the pass did on the targets it does reach. Look at finding 1 first — it is a one-site fix, and it is the only thing between this and merge.

On your question — a bare spread beside an href, with no as written. Yes, that way round is right, and the reason is narrower than the trade you stated, which makes it safer than it looks.

  • Dropping is only ever wrong on a target that could have carried the href at some as, i.e. one with a HREF_OK row whose default is not the anchor. That is two components: Button and Level.Item. On the other seven rows the default already is the anchor, so dropInertHref returns at line 340 and nothing is dropped; off the table the spread cannot make the component take an href, so dropping is right whatever it holds.
  • Against that: treating a bare spread as unknown would return before line 317, which is where the component-level rule lives — so <Dropdown.Item> plus a spread plus an href would ship the attribute with no TODO. That is #662 itself, reachable on every target in the library rather than two.
  • And the failure modes are not symmetric in cost. The drop is announced, quotes the value it removed, and names as="a" as the remedy; the keep is a type error in the user's project with nothing pointing at it.

The one thing I would not do is generalise the reasoning to the explicit as + spread case as symmetric. It is not: an author who writes as usually is not also passing one through the spread, whereas an author who writes none has the spread as the only possible source. Your current split reads backwards on likelihood and forwards on cost, and cost is the right axis — but that is the argument to record, not "a spread with no as is probably not carrying one."

Verification method, stated plainly: this session's sandbox refused every file write and every node -e, so I could not run novel inputs through the built transforms — no probe of <Title as="h2"> plus a spread was executed, and finding 1 is derived from reading the executable path (lastWordOnAs → read.shadowed → the unconditional addTodo → dropInertHref's line 317 branch sitting above its line 328 elementKnown guard), not from observed output. What I did run: turbo run test --filter=bestax-migrate at HEAD, green at 35 suites / 1207 tests, and tsc over the package. Treat finding 1's severity as confirmed-by-reading; the two shapes it names are worth migrating once by hand before fixing.

Residual risk:

  • The link-attribute tables. Refuted. LINK_ATTR_TABLE is now asserted Exact against Extract<ElementsWith<K>, Html> over all 119 HTML intrinsics in both directions, and HREF_ELEMENTS likewise; the <style href> React-18/19 divergence is excluded with the reason written down, and the rel-is-on-HTMLAttributes and type-is-not-a-link-attribute exclusions both hold against @types/react 19.
  • HREF_OK completeness. Refuted for what is reachable: every target: line plus Pagination.Next/Previous is generated and typechecked both ways. Three targets are named unprobeable rather than filtered silently. Open at the edges — see findings 5 and 7.
  • The plain-markup path. Refuted. All six keptAttrs call sites pass their tag and Heading calls dropLinkAttrsForPlainTag by name; HREF_ELEMENTS keeps href on a plain <area>/<link>/<base>, and the RBC card-image restructure now renames renderAs and runs the pass against Image before moving the props, which closes the one RBC route the shared call site could not reach.
  • The two sources that no longer shadow. Partly refuted. bloomer and RBC pass false, and the claim behind it — the rename only ever touches a literal attribute — holds in both mappings. What it does not cover is a spread carrying the source's element prop: bloomer's tag or RBC's renderAs inside a spread did override the written one at runtime, and the migrated output now trusts the written as and cleans against it. That is the generic renamed-prop-inside-a-spread hole this codemod has everywhere, not something this PR introduced, so it is named rather than posted.
  • Open, not posted: whether the shadowed decline should emit compiling output at all (finding 2). Whichever way the spread goes, the emitted pair is a type error; there is no third element the pass could pick without writing a conditional this package has already declined twice. Recorded as the accepted trade-off.

🏄 Twenty-eight commits deep and this thing still rides clean — the tables are pinned to the library by use, the three sources finally agree, and the as/href split reads like someone actually looked at the components instead of the prop names. One little wipeout left: the new spread warning paddles out on every wave whether or not there's a set coming. Gate it and this one's good to go, dude.

…e shadow TODO

Final round, and every one of these is in code this PR added.

**A plain rewrite can emit an SVG tag.** bloomer's `plainTag` returns whatever
literal the source wrote, and `SVGAttributes` declares `href` -- so
`<TabLink tag="use" href="#icon">` lost a working attribute to a table that
only knows HTML. An unrecognised tag is left alone now: this pass removes
attributes it can prove are dead, and it cannot prove that here. The HTML list
moved out of the test and into the module, so there is one copy and the test
still pins it.

**The shadow TODO fired whether or not anything was at stake.** It was decided
by the `as` and the spread alone, so `<Title as="h2" {...rest}>` -- a complete
migration with no `href` and no siblings -- collected one. It also ran before
the passes, so it could claim attributes were "left as written" that the
component-level rules were about to remove. It runs last now, only when
something element-dependent actually survived, and it names what.

**Two remedies suggested nesting interactive content.** `Card.Header.Icon`
renders a `<button>` and `Dropdown.Item` an `<a>`, so "put an <a> inside"
yields `<button><a>` or `<a><a>`. Both have their own line now.

And `attrSource` was inserted between `literalValueOf` and its JSDoc, leaving
one helper undocumented and the other with the wrong comment.

Closing the review loop

Head is 77ae350. pnpm all green with all three Tasks: summaries, 1207 tests, and the three corpus runs clean (they are out of CI, so they were run by hand after every behaviour change).

Handing over for human review. The owner has called time on further rounds, and the reasoning is worth recording: these are dead source libraries, the odds of anyone migrating off rbx or bloomer are slim, and the remaining findings had moved from "output does not compile" to test strength and message wording. The loop was still producing real defects, but the cost/benefit had turned.

What this PR ended up being

#662 reported three bloomer shapes emitting href beside a non-anchor as. The rule that fixes it is shared, so it turned into: which props survive when the element changes, for all three sources.

Five tables in _shared/polymorphic.ts decide that, and every one of them was wrong at least once — none caught by re-reading, all by typechecking or a reviewer. They are pinned by use now: each row asserted against @allxsmith/bestax-bulma and @types/react, with the completeness of the set asserted too, in both directions.

Judgement calls, so a reviewer does not have to re-derive them

  • A dynamic href on bloomer's switching components resolves to the anchor. The conditional alternative (as={href ? "a" : "span"}) typechecks more widely than the advisory credited, and was declined: it writes a conditional the author did not, works only for a literal tag, and leaves two output shapes.
  • A bare {...rest} keeps the ordinary reading, so the href is dropped. Treating every spread as an unknown element keeps href on components that take none. It trades a silent invalid href for a reported dropped one.
  • type is not treated as a link attribute, though AnchorHTMLAttributes adds it. It is an ordinary prop on form controls; treating it as one stripped type="text" off every <Input>.
  • <style href> is excluded — React 19 only, and the peer range is ^18 || ^19.
  • No fix(create-bestax) commit for the skill changes, per the decision on [Bug] bulma-ui: form label prop renders a Label but wires no htmlFor/id #368.

Known and deliberately not fixed here

RBC Table.Container has a branch that folds the container into its child and discards the outer element's attributes silently — <Table.Container id="x"> loses the id with no TODO. Real, breaks "never a silent skip", and unrelated to href/as. Worth its own issue.

Thanks to both reviewers. The most valuable findings were the ones where a fix of mine generalised further than it should have, and where a test claimed a guarantee it did not have — I would not have found either by reading my own diff.

Spread-only as values can lose working links, and dynamic bloomer hrefs are rewritten by guessing a runtime branch.

  • For an href expression this unconditionally removes the source tag and later selects the anchor, even though an empty runtime value made bloomer render the other element. That is a best-guess rewrite of a dynamic value, which the repository explicitly forbids in bestax-migrate/CLAUDE.md:44-46. Preserve the runtime choice with a conditional when it can be represented, or avoid choosing either branch and leave a TODO-guided manual resolution.
    // The href wins the element. bloomer read `props.href ? 'a' : tag`, so a
    // `tag` here is the branch that did not run, and the anchor is what
    // rendered. That holds for an expression too, so the `tag` still goes --
    // but it is a live reference, so its removal is announced rather than
    // silent, which is what the first version of this got wrong.

bestax-migrate/src/sources/_shared/polymorphic.ts:586

  • An rbx spread can supply as even when there is no explicit as before it. With <Button {...p} href="/x"> and p.as === "a", this currently leaves shadowed false, assumes the default <button>, and removes a working href while the spread still makes bestax render an anchor. Treat every potentially-as-carrying spread as making the element unknown until a later explicit as restores the last word.
    if (a.type === 'JSXSpreadAttribute') {
      if (seen && spreadCanCarryAs) {
        seen = undefined;
        shadowed = true;
      }
