docs: document how deep-review findings route to the loop's verify job - #595
Conversation
The deep review posts on two channels and only one of them creates work for the loop: blocking findings (red/orange/yellow) go inline and become the fix agent's threads, while advisories appear only as rows in the marker summary review so they cannot spin the loop. Nothing recorded that, so a verify pass missing from a run's job list reads as a broken loop rather than as a review with zero blocking findings — which is what #593 was filed about. Refs #593

WalkthroughThe AI development guide now documents how deep-review findings reach the fix agent and how the gate selects actions from unresolved threads, CI status, loop state, and iteration limits. ChangesAI deep-review documentation
Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~3 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This documentation update explains how review findings trigger verification, but its statement that the gate evaluates the entire unresolved-thread set may be inaccurate for unusually large pull requests because the underlying queries have fixed limits. The change is otherwise localized and mergeable with explicit owner follow-up to qualify that limitation and clarify one sentence. Deep review — 0 blocking · 1 advisory
| No. | Severity | Area | Finding | Location |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 🔵 Advisory | Correctness | "verify missing from a run means the review found nothing that blocks" is the dominant case, not the only one — same-run mode precedence (fix-ci/fix-reviews outrank verify) and a capped/paused loop also suppress it |
docs/docs/guides/getting-started/ai-development.md:152 |
Overall: The change is sound and accurate. Every mechanical claim in the new prose matches the workflow: blocking findings are filed inline (claude-review prompt, --allowedTools first entry), the fix agent replies Fixed in <sha> without resolving (claude-pr-loop.yml:10-16), and verify is gated on PENDING_VERIFY/REBUTTABLE threads (claude-pr-loop.yml:224-232,282) — which only exist when a 🔴/🟠/🟡 finding created a claude[bot] thread. The zero-blocking to no-verify conclusion is exactly right. The riskiest part is only the one over-tight sentence flagged above; a human need not block on it, but a small hedge ("usually means") would make it airtight.
Residual risk:
- Doc could misstate the routing. Refuted — cross-checked against
claude-pr-loop.yml(thread classification lines 199-232, mode decision lines 279-283) and issue 593 corrected framing; the two-channel design (inline = work item, summary = advisory) is described faithfully. - MDX/build breakage from the added Markdown. Refuted — all angle-bracket tokens (
<sha>,<!-- claude-deep-review -->) sit inside code spans, so MDX treats them literally; no bare JSX, no fenced-block or admonition changes. Docs-only, no generated regions touched. - Empirical counts (24 reviews, 4 blocking) drift. Accepted — these are point-in-time figures from issue 593 covering PRs 560 through 592; they document a historical measurement, not a live invariant, so future PRs will not invalidate the prose.
🏄 Pure documentation swell, dude — no code in the water, just writing down the current that was always flowing. Claims all check out against the workflow reef; one sentence rides a touch tight but it is totally good to paddle out. 🌊
Review caught two defects in the new section. The fixer does not always reply "Fixed in <sha>" — it may refute a finding instead, which routes back to the reviewer through REBUTTABLE for one rebut-or-concede round; that path was missing entirely. And an absent verify job does not prove the review found nothing blocking. The gate picks one mode per run, so red or pending CI and threads still awaiting the fixer outrank verify, and a capped or paused loop stops before it. Scoped the claim and pointed at the gate's decision line for telling the cases apart. Refs #593

The zero-blocking explanation overlooks unresolved threads from earlier deep-review runs.

A zero-blocking deep review files no threads of its own, but the gate classifies every unresolved thread on the PR, not just the latest review's output. Since a triage+ user can re-apply deep-review, a re-run that finds nothing can still meet an open thread from the earlier pass and route to verify on that. Split the paragraph so the common case reads plainly and the exceptions sit together behind the gate's decision line. Refs #593

The guide incorrectly states that reaching the fix-round cap prevents a verify run.

The cap does not stop verify. claude-pr-loop.yml:296-299 rewrites the mode to halt only when it is fix-ci or fix-reviews, so a verify selected at iteration 4 still runs; only those two modes increment the counter in the first place. A paused loop does stop it, because the gate's if: requires the ai-loop label that pausing removes. Grouping the two as one cause would send someone troubleshooting a missing verify to the iteration counter, which is the wrong place. Refs #593

Review caught two things. "reports 0 blocking files no inline threads" used files as a verb, but with the code span in front of it the phrase reads as the noun "0 blocking files"; posts removes the ambiguity without changing what is counted, which is findings rather than files. And the gate does not read the whole thread set: its query is reviewThreads(first:100) with comments(first:50) and no pageInfo or after, unlike gh-thread.sh which paginates both. Bounded the claim to what the query actually reads. Refs #593

Refs #593.
#593 was filed on the theory that
claude-pr-loop'sverifyjob was structurallyunreachable, because
claude-review.yml"files no inline comments, so no claude-authoredthread is ever created." That turned out to be wrong on both counts — the deep review has
filed inline comments since #216, and
verifyhas run end to end (runs32857163749on#564 and
32913565697on #569). The issue is now re-scoped to what is actually true. The reason a careful reader reached the wrong conclusion is that nothing documented how the
deep review routes its findings. This adds that to the ai-development guide:
fix agent's work items, answered with
Fixed in <sha>and left unresolved for thereviewer's
verifypass to check and close.<!-- claude-deep-review -->summary review, because an inline thread is an actionablework item and advisories must not spin the loop.
0 blockingcreates no threads andverifydoes not run.Its absence from a run's job list is the design working, not a stalled loop.
That last point is the one worth writing down: across the 24 deep reviews posted on
#560–#592, only 4 reported a blocking finding, and all 4 produced a
claude[bot]inlinethread. Zero blocking, zero threads — 4/4, no exceptions.
Docs-only; no workflow, config or source changes.
