Description

Two things, the second found while verifying the first.

1. New blog post, at docs/blog/2026-07-28-bulma-3-css-framework-ai-will-never-tell-you-about-it.md

"Bulma Is the #3 CSS Framework. AI Will Never Tell You About It". It argues third place is a deliberate choice rather than a consolation prize, walks through scaffolding a site with create-bestax, thanks users for supporting open source, makes the case that GitHub stars cost nothing but drive adoption when legitimate projects receive them, and closes on how AI-assisted defaults compound popularity into monoculture, with concrete ways to keep ecosystem diversity alive.

37 live, editable examples throughout (tsx live), rendered by the docs' swizzled CodeBlock: a Panel leaderboard, an interactive HSL theme slider, a clickable Steps walkthrough of the four CLI prompts, a forms/feedback/navigation/content component tour, a Rate-based star demo with links through to the bestax and Bulma repos, and a step-through of the popularity feedback loop.

The post is still drafted (published: false, publish_to_devto: false) so it does not syndicate on merge. Flip both when ready.

2. Font Awesome fix, at docs/plugins/preserve-font-face.js

While screenshotting the post's live previews, every FA icon rendered as a blank box. That turned out to be a pre-existing production bug affecting the whole site, not the new post. Docusaurus minifies with @docusaurus/cssnano-preset (wrapping cssnano-preset-advanced), which enables discardUnused. That pass drops any @font-face whose family it cannot see referenced by a font-family declaration, and Font Awesome v7 never names its family literally:

.fas {
  --_fa-family: var(--fa-family, var(--fa-style-family, "Font Awesome 7 Free"));
  font-family: var(--_fa-family);
}

discardUnused cannot follow that indirection, so all ten FA @font-face rules were stripped while the .fa-* class rules survived, leaving glyphs requested from a family the document never defined. The webfonts were still emitted to assets/fonts/, just orphaned.

The plugin re-uses the preset path Docusaurus already configured and passes it discardUnused: { fontFace: false }, so no new dependency is added. Only font faces are exempted; keyframes, idents and counter-styles still get discarded. A cheaper custom.css literal-reference workaround was tried and rejected, because it rescued only 3 of 10 faces and would break on the next FA major rename.

Checklist

  • My code follows the project style guidelines
  • I have performed a self-review of my code
  • I have added tests that prove my fix is effective or that my feature works. See the note below
  • I have added/updated documentation as needed
  • I have updated Storybook stories as needed (bulma-ui). Not applicable, no library changes
  • My changes require a change to the documentation
  • All new and existing tests passed
  • Any relevant dependencies are updated. None added
  • If this PR changes commands, conventions, or package structure, the affected CLAUDE.md files are updated. No command or convention changes

On tests: the FA fix is a build-output behavior with no natural unit-test home today. Asserting on @font-face counts in the emitted stylesheet would need new test infrastructure in the docs package, so it is flagged here rather than quietly skipped. The verification below was done manually against a clean production build.

Screenshots / Demos

Verification of the Font Awesome fix, on a clean build with caches cleared:

Check Before After
@font-face rules in emitted CSS 9 (all Material*) 19 (the 10 FA faces return)
CSS references assets/fonts/fa-*.woff2 no yes
Browser fetch of fa-solid-900.woff2 never requested 200
document.fonts.check('900 16px "Font Awesome 7 Free"') false true
Icons on /docs/api/components/panel blank boxes render correctly

Isolated repro against cssnano directly: source 10 @font-face, advanced preset 0, advanced plus discardUnused.fontFace: false 10.

Blog post verification: served the production build and drove it with Playwright. 37 live-preview blocks, 0 react-live errors, 0 empty previews. Every component prop used in the examples was checked against its API docs page first, and two would have thrown at runtime: Field has no help prop, and Badge takes content, not value.

Additional Context

  • The FA bug was almost certainly introduced by the v6 to v7 upgrade. v6 declared font-family: "Font Awesome 6 Free" literally in .fas, which discardUnused could see.
  • The fix is scoped fix(docs) so it does not trigger a library release.
  • The monoculture and ecosystem cards use display="flex" on each Column and flexGrow="1" on the Box so they hold equal heights. Measured at 216px each in the browser.
  • The post contains no em dashes, by request. Each one was replaced in context (colon, comma, parentheses or full stop) rather than swapped for a hyphen, including strings inside the live examples.
  • The file was renamed so the published URL matches the title. It moved from /blog/2026/07/28/bulma-3rd-most-used-css-framework to /blog/2026/07/28/bulma-3-css-framework-ai-will-never-tell-you-about-it, with canonical_url updated to match. Safe because the post has never been published.
  • The component count quoted in the post is 87, taken from the generated skill catalog rather than estimated.

New post covering:

- why third place is a deliberate choice, not a consolation prize
- what Bulma v1 actually delivers (CSS variables, HSL theming, grid,
  dark mode, prefixed distribution)
- scaffolding a React + Bulma site with create-bestax, including the
  interactive prompts, the CLI flags, and a live component example
- a thank-you to open source users, and why GitHub stars on legitimate
  projects are a free but load-bearing adoption signal
- how AI-assisted defaults compound popularity into monoculture, and
  concrete ways to keep ecosystem diversity alive

Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01Fghz3LG6ePvKig6JTjazLa
Every code block in the post is now an editable live example rendered by
the docs site's react-live CodeBlock, instead of static snippets:

- Bulma feature tour: semantic colors across Buttons/Tags/Message, an
  interactive HSL Theme slider, Skeleton loaders, Columns
- create-bestax section: clickable Steps walkthrough of the four prompts
- new "A Tour in Live Code" section covering forms (Field, Select, Switch,
  Slider, Numberinput, Taginput), feedback (Notification, Toast, Dialog,
  Tooltip, Progress), navigation (Tabs, Dropdown, Menu, Breadcrumb), and
  content (Media, Table, Avatars, Badge, Collapse, Reveal, IconText, Card)
- support sections: a Rate-based star demo, an effort/value table, a
  step-through of the popularity feedback loop, and a monoculture-vs-
  ecosystem comparison

Props verified against the API docs; the CSS framework leaderboard Panel
opens the post. Corrects the component count to the catalog's 87.

Every Font Awesome icon in the live previews rendered as a blank box in
production. The cause is in CSS minification, not the icon markup.

Docusaurus minifies with @docusaurus/cssnano-preset, which wraps
cssnano-preset-advanced and so enables discardUnused. That pass drops any
@font-face whose family it cannot see referenced by a font-family
declaration. Font Awesome v7 never names its family literally:

  .fas { --_fa-family: var(--fa-family, var(--fa-style-family, "Font Awesome 7 Free"));
         font-family: var(--_fa-family); }

discardUnused cannot follow that indirection, so all ten of Font Awesome's
@font-face rules were stripped from the bundle while the .fa-* class rules
survived — the glyphs were requested from a family the document never
defined. The webfonts were still emitted to assets/fonts/, just never
referenced by any rule.

Adds a small local plugin that re-uses the preset path Docusaurus already
configured and passes it discardUnused.fontFace: false, so no new
dependency is needed. Only font faces are exempted; keyframes, idents and
counter-styles still get discarded.

Verified against a clean production build: @font-face rules in the emitted
stylesheet go from 9 to 19 (the 10 Font Awesome faces return), the CSS now
references assets/fonts/fa-*.woff2, the browser fetches fa-solid-900.woff2
(200), document.fonts.check for "Font Awesome 7 Free" is true, and icons
render on both the new blog post and the existing Panel API page.

How can I continue?

After more reviews become available, a review can be triggered using the @coderabbitai review command as a PR comment. Alternatively, push new commits to this PR.

To avoid repeated limits, reduce automatic review volume by pausing incremental auto-reviews earlier, using label-based review opt-in, excluding WIP or generated PR titles, or requesting reviews manually when the PR is ready. If your team needs uninterrupted high-volume reviews, an organization admin can enable usage-based reviews.

How do review limits work?

CodeRabbit enforces per-developer PR review limits for each organization. Most developers receive the normal plan review availability.

For paid Pro and Pro+ PR reviews, CodeRabbit uses adaptive limits for sustained high-volume activity. When a developer's recent PR review activity reaches the 95th percentile or higher among CodeRabbit users, additional reviews become available more gradually as earlier reviews age out of the rolling window.

…Bulma post

- Retitle to "Bulma Is the #3 CSS Framework — and AI Will Never Tell You
  About It", leading with the post's actual thesis instead of a ranking.
  Shorter sidebar_label and a matching description. The filename, slug and
  canonical_url are unchanged, so the published URL stays put.
- Give the monoculture-vs-ecosystem cards equal heights via display="flex"
  on each Column and flexGrow="1" on the Box, so they line up regardless of
  text length, with a sentence naming the helper props.
- Add two linked star buttons to the Rate demo, pointing at the bestax and
  Bulma repos, plus a line telling readers the demo stars are a toy and the
  ones that count are two clicks away.

Verified on a production build: 37 live blocks, 0 react-live errors, both
cards measure 216px, and the star buttons resolve to the right repos.

…he title

Em dashes read as an AI tell, so all 49 are gone from the post, title
included. Each was replaced in context rather than swapped for a hyphen:
colons where a definition followed, commas for parenthetical asides,
parentheses where the aside was long, and full stops where the clause stood
on its own. No em dashes remain in the rendered page's visible text.

The title loses its dash and becomes "Bulma Is the #3 CSS Framework. AI Will
Never Tell You About It", and the post is renamed so the published URL
matches it:

  /blog/2026/07/28/bulma-3rd-most-used-css-framework
  /blog/2026/07/28/bulma-3-css-framework-ai-will-never-tell-you-about-it

canonical_url is updated to match. Safe to move because the post has never
been published (published: false, publish_to_devto: false) and the branch is
unmerged, so no live URL breaks.

Verified on a production build: page serves at the new path, h1 and document
title carry the new wording, 37 live blocks, 0 react-live errors.

The post opened with a live <Panel> and never told the reader what library
that was, so the examples read as raw Bulma when they are React components.

Adds "Why That Was React and Not Raw Bulma" right after the first example,
framing the choice around AI tooling rather than convenience: Bulma ships
CSS and nothing else, so a class string carries no schema an assistant can
check itself against, and a wrong modifier surfaces only when a human looks
at the page. Typed props give a model a real surface to target, and the
published LLM index plus Agent Skills let it read that surface instead of
half-remembering it. A framework AI cannot use confidently is one AI will
not recommend, which is the same mechanism the post's closing argument
turns on, so making Bulma AI-native is how third place stays on the board.

The "Teach your assistant" bullet now calls back to that section instead of
re-explaining the LLM index from scratch.

No em dashes. Verified on a production build: 37 live blocks, 0 react-live
errors, 0 visible em dashes.

### BREAKING CHANGES

* **bestax-migrate:** bestax-migrate now requires Node.js 22 or newer. Node 18 and
20 are both past end-of-life. Running it on an older runtime prints an explicit
upgrade message and exits 1. This applies to the runtime the codemod executes
on, not to the app being migrated.

* feat(bestax-migrate): require Node 22 and take chalk 6

chalk 6 drops support for Node below 22. The API surface this package uses is
unchanged, so no calling code changes.

The version guard in src/index.ts moves ahead of every import and no longer
depends on anything: import declarations are hoisted and evaluated before any
statement in the module, and chalk 6 itself requires Node >= 22, so a static
import would fail to load on exactly the runtimes the guard exists to catch.
./cli.js is now imported dynamically for the same reason.

@babel/parser deliberately stays on 7.x. Babel 8 removes the
`deprecatedImportAssert` plugin with no replacement, and this package parses
the legacy `import x from 'y' assert { type: 'json' }` form on purpose — a
codemod that migrates older codebases must not crash on the syntax those
codebases still contain. There is a regression test for it ("parses the legacy
import-assert syntax"), which Babel 8 fails outright. jscodeshift 17 bundles
its own Babel 7 regardless, so staying on 7 also keeps a single parser in the
tree rather than two.
* **deps:** bestax-migrate now requires Node.js 22 or newer. Node 18 and
20 are both past end-of-life. Running it on an older runtime prints an explicit
upgrade message and exits 1.

### BREAKING CHANGES

* **bestax-migrate:** bestax-migrate now requires Node.js 22 or newer. Node 18 and
20 are both past end-of-life. Running it on an older runtime prints an explicit
upgrade message and exits 1. This applies to the runtime the codemod executes
on, not to the app being migrated.

* feat(bestax-migrate): require Node 22 and take chalk 6

chalk 6 drops support for Node below 22.

20 are both past end-of-life. Running it on an older runtime prints an explicit
upgrade message and exits 1.

### BREAKING CHANGES

* **bestax-migrate:** bestax-migrate now requires Node.js 22 or newer. Node 18 and
20 are both past end-of-life. Running it on an older runtime prints an explicit
upgrade message and exits 1. This applies to the runtime the codemod executes
on, not to the app being migrated.

* **create-bestax:** create-bestax now requires Node.js 22 or newer. Node 18 and 20

* feat(bestax-migrate): require Node 22 and take chalk 6

chalk 6 drops support for Node below 22.

20 are both past end-of-life. Running it on an older runtime prints an explicit
upgrade message and exits 1.

* footer requirement, and the commitlint scope rule
- CONTRIBUTING.md: replace the type-less commit example with a
  commitlint-valid conventional format (verified against commitlint);
  correct all four coverage mentions to the real jest thresholds
  (bulma-ui 99%, create-bestax 95%/78% branches); fix the npm package
  name (@allxsmith/bestax-bulma, plus create-bestax) and link VERSIONING.md
- CLAUDE.md: remove the stale-docs warning and asides now that the
  underlying docs are correct; point at VERSIONING.md again

Closes #206.

* the @allxsmith/bestax-bulma/versions/bestax-bulma-prefixed.css
export is removed. Use versions/bestax-prefixed.css with classPrefix="bestax-".
* **bulma-ui:** React 16 and 17 are no longer supported; the minimum
supported React version is now 18.
* **bulma-ui:** Snackbar has been removed and merged into Toast; use Toast
with its positioning and queue props instead.
* **bulma-ui:** form controls now auto-wrap in Field/Control, and Checkbox
and Radio ship new themed visuals. See the 2.x -> 3.x migration guide.
* This version requires Node.js 18.0.0 or higher. The CLI now enforces this requirement and will exit with an error message if running on older Node.js versions. This aligns create-bestax with the bestax-bulma v2.x ecosystem.

* fix(create-bestax): correct Prettier formatting in index.ts
* None - all changes are additive and backward compatible
