What?

Replace the Dell ObjectScale callback/descriptor flow with explicit RDMA tokens from the existing process-wide SharedCuObjClient. This is a current-main replacement for #1515, related to #1464.

Why?

The Dell implementation on target main 744fc8a still calls cuObjPut/cuObjGet during Dell prepXfer; its callbacks copy descriptor strings and return before the actual S3 request. Subsequent postXfer calls use those saved strings. The generic RDMA work in #2241 added shared registration and token management but explicitly leaves vendor clients on their separate paths.

The original PR cannot be transplanted as-is: it drops Dell's registry entry, loses VRAM advertisement through the current parent engine, and introduces another cuObject client instead of reusing the process-wide implementation.

How?

  • Mint a fresh token for every posted request, including re-posting a prepared handle. Capture token ownership through asynchronous completion; the shared client retains the underlying registration until token release.
  • Preserve Dell's x-rdma-info protocol, empty PUT body, GET ranges, checksum defaults and explicit overrides, and no HTTP fallback.
  • Reuse accelerated-engine registration (including CUDA device selection), normal S3 preparation/completion, and shared registered-subrange lookup. Preserve Dell discovery, unique object devIds, count validation, and all-key/write-offset validation before batch dispatch.
  • Remove the separate RDMA client interface and callback request machinery.
  • Preserve Dell's prompt failure observation when an earlier request is still pending: scan all futures rather than stopping at the first pending one. Controlled READ/WRITE completion tests cover the regression found during isolated review.
  • Add 16 deterministic token/status regression cases and three real-CUDA wrapper tests to plugins_gtest, covering the production prep/post/check path, request headers/ranges, lifetime, re-posting, failure propagation, bounds, registration and batch validation. The existing plugin runner invokes this binary; actual remote execution remains pending.
  • Replace stale prep-time token expectations with post-time range rejection coverage. Legacy Dell registration tests explicitly skip without fabric. The three dellGpuRegistrationTest cases use real CUDA allocation/context calls with injected cuObject pinning. A CPU pointer falsely labeled VRAM is no longer treated as valid GPU evidence.

Validation and remaining limits

Current head: 586a020, merged with main 744fc8a on 2026-10-20 without conflicts.

The focused native binary links real CUDA/cuObject/AWS libraries. Tests inject cuObject registration/token calls and HTTP submission/completion; CUDA allocations and context calls use the RTX 5060 Ti. Qualified dependencies: CUDA 13.2, cuObject 1.1.1.22, AWS SDK 1.11.833, GCC 14.3.0.

Requirement Status / evidence
Current-head focused native build and token/status orchestration PASS on 2026-10-20: 19 tests, zero skips (16 injected token/status cases and three real CUDA wrapper cases). All 15 repository translation-unit hashes in build provenance match the immutable head snapshot.
Review follow-up Removed the always-skipped RegisterMemoryVramSeg placeholder, which had no assertions. The three dellGpuRegistrationTest cases remain and passed. The review claim that DellVramXferTest does not exist is incorrect: it is defined in test/gtest/plugins/obj_cuobj_plugin.cpp and is retained; its actual Dell RDMA execution remains NOT RUN.
Shared-client availability guard Source-confirmed: instance() returns inst.connected_ ? &inst : nullptr; isConnected() reads that same flag, which has no post-construction writes. The existing null guard already excludes an unavailable singleton. The Dell constructor additionally checks injected client instances. No redundant guard added for discussion r4289426059.
Independent review of this follow-up PASS in the bounded comment/minimality/compatibility/delivery scope at head 586a020. Fresh-context reviewer independently checked singleton and test-reference premises, retained coverage, adjacent fixture skip control flow, source/provenance hashes, XML and native TU compilation. No blocking finding; unexecuted full runner/RDMA properties remain NOT RUN.
CUDA memory checking and counterexamples Historical PASS on 2026-10-16/14: three GPU tests under Compute Sanitizer with zero memory errors/leaks; deliberate-invalid-device API errors excluded from API-error reporting. Context-restoration and failure-behind-pending mutations were rejected. Not rerun for this test-only deletion; production OBJ/RDMA and focused test sources are unchanged since the qualified head.
Full Meson OBJ/plugins_gtest build and actual runner / native CI NOT RUN. aws-cpp-sdk-s3-crt is absent on the GPU host; Meson skips these targets without it. The modified legacy obj.cpp unit translation unit was separately compiled successfully with the real native headers on 2026-10-20, but the full unit binary was not linked/run. Native upstream CI requires maintainer runner validation.
Real cuObject pinning/token generation, RDMA, Dell DRAM/VRAM E2E, multi-GPU NOT RUN. This GPU host has no RDMA NIC or configured Dell endpoint.
Generic multipart protocol runtime NOT RUN by this focused Dell target; Dell preserves its x-rdma-info protocol rather than using generic multipart.

Historical broader stub-boundary OBJ runs on ab06cbc and baseline main 0165676 had the same five mock read-data expectation failures; these are not current full-native-suite results.

This follow-up addresses the two inline comments; the full native runner and real Dell transfer qualification remain open readiness gates. GitHub metadata/lint results do not establish native CI or RDMA success.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Dell S3 transfers now obtain RDMA tokens automatically for reads and writes, retaining them until asynchronous requests complete.
    • Transfers support byte-range reads, with validation for invalid inputs and unavailable RDMA support.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Request status checks now account for all pending operations before reporting success.
    • Duplicate object-memory registrations are rejected instead of replacing existing registrations.
  • Documentation

    • Added documentation covering RDMA token handling and transfer validation.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for token handling, validation, asynchronous completion, and memory registration.

📝 Walkthrough

The Dell S3 engine now uses shared cuObject RDMA tokens for asynchronous PUT and GET requests. Transfer preparation and posting use the default object engine. Generic S3 status polling scans all request futures before returning an in-progress status.

Changes: Dell S3 RDMA transfer lifecycle

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared RDMA access and registration
src/plugins/obj/s3_accel/engine_impl.*, src/plugins/obj/s3_accel/dell/engine_impl.*, test/gtest/unit/obj/obj_test_base.h
The accelerated S3 engine provides shared RDMA client access. The Dell engine uses it for construction and registration, validates memory limits and addresses, and rejects duplicate object registrations.
Token-based request and transfer execution
src/plugins/obj/s3_accel/dell/client.*, src/plugins/obj/s3_accel/dell/engine_impl.*, src/plugins/obj/s3_accel/dell/rdma_interface.h, src/plugins/obj/s3_accel/dell/README.md
The Dell client uses base-client PUT and GET methods, mints tokens, sends them in x-rdma-info, and retains them through asynchronous completion. The Dell engine validates batches and delegates preparation and posting to the default object engine.
Token lifecycle and validation coverage
test/gtest/plugins/dell_token.cpp, test/gtest/plugins/meson.build, test/gtest/unit/obj/*
Tests cover request construction, token lifetime, reposting, failures, registration, CUDA contexts, and batch validation. Dell test setup uses the generic S3 mock and requires a shared cuObject client when applicable.

Generic S3 future status

Layer / File(s) Summary
Scan request futures
src/plugins/obj/s3/engine_impl.cpp
getOverallStatus continues past pending futures, returns a completed failure when found, and returns in-progress only when a future remains pending.
