What?

Test-only. Ports the single-process Prometheus exporter's scrape, histogram and stress tests that are still worth keeping to prometheus_mp, and adds a mock_bind_failed telemetry plugin so the path where nixlTelemetry::create runs without a sink stays covered.

Why?

NIX-2062 merges prometheus and prometheus_mp into one exporter; a follow-up PR deletes the single-process exporter and its tests. This lands the coverage that PR would otherwise delete, against the exporter that stays.

How?

Cases, differences from the originals, testing

New MpExporterTest cases, all loading prometheus_mp:

  • telemetry_mp_scrape_test.cpp: ScrapeEmitsExactlyTheDescriptorSeries, AgentMetricsAppearInScrape, ByteCounterSumsWhileLastGaugeTracksFinalOp, ErrorCountersUseBoundedStatusLabel, XferTimeHistogramRecordsObservations, HistogramBucketsEnvOverride, BindCollisionCreateIsNonFatalWarn.
  • telemetry_mp_stress_test.cpp: ConcurrentAddXferStatsOverflowConservation, ConcurrentMixedWorkloadAggregation.

telemetryTest.ExporterBindFailureRunsWithoutSink loads the new mock_bind_failed plugin, whose exporter constructor throws nixlTelemetryBindFailed, and checks that create returns nullptr with one warning.

Differences from the single-process originals:

  • AgentMetricsAppearInScrape drops the check that a departed peer's series vanish, since prometheus_mp keeps publishing a departed store until NIXL_TELEMETRY_MP_STALE_TTL (covered by DepartedWriterIsPublishedOnceMoreThenReaped). It now also checks that a lone agent has no pid or agent_instance label.
  • BindCollisionCreateIsNonFatalWarn: with a foreign listener on the port, create now returns a telemetry in writer mode and logs exactly one "is held by a process outside this run" warning.
  • The two stress cases run, in every build, the load the originals ran under sanitizers.

Not ported: ExportEventIncrementReflectedInScrape (the old exporter's use-after-free regression test), BindCollisionThrowsBindFailed (covered by WriterModeWhenPortTaken), and the five cases already twinned in telemetry_mp_core_test.cpp. The single-process tests are untouched.

Tested on debug and TSan builds with --gtest_filter=Mp*:prometheusTelemetryTest.*:histogramBucketsTest.*:telemetryTest.*:telemetryStressTest.*:LoadedPluginTestFixture.*: 131 passed, 1 pre-existing skip, no TSan reports.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Expanded coverage for Prometheus multi-process telemetry scraping, including reported metrics, labels, histograms, and behavior when the scrape port is unavailable.
    • Added checks for exporter initialization failures, verifying telemetry creation can proceed without a sink when binding fails.
    • Added concurrent workload tests that verify metric totals and dropped-event counts, including under event overflow conditions.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Adds tests for exporter bind-failure handling and Prometheus multiprocess scrape and concurrent telemetry update behavior.

Changes

Telemetry exporter tests

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bind-failure mock and test
test/gtest/mocks/meson.build, test/gtest/mocks/mock_bind_failed_telemetry_plugin.cpp, test/gtest/telemetry_test.cpp
Adds a mock exporter that throws during construction. The test checks that telemetry creation returns null without throwing and logs the sinkless warning once.
Multiprocess scrape coverage
test/gtest/meson.build, test/gtest/telemetry_mp_scrape_test.cpp, test/gtest/mp_telemetry_fixture.h
Conditionally adds multiprocess test sources. Scrape tests check metric names and labels, peer exporter coexistence, counter and gauge values, error series, histogram buckets, configured bucket boundaries, and port-bind collision handling.
Concurrent update stress coverage
test/gtest/telemetry_mp_stress_test.cpp
Adds concurrent tests for overflow accounting and aggregation of mixed telemetry updates, including counters, gauges, and error totals.

Port the single-process Prometheus scrape, histogram and stress cases
that are still worth keeping to prometheus_mp, so this coverage survives
when NIX-2062 removes the single-process exporter and its tests.

Add a mock telemetry plugin whose exporter throws nixlTelemetryBindFailed,
so nixlTelemetry::create's run-without-a-sink path stays covered once no
real exporter throws it.

Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
Clear NIXL_TELEMETRY_RANK_ENV as well as LOCAL_RANK, since either can add
a local_rank label, and reject pid and agent_instance on every series of
the lone agent's scrape rather than only on the series looked up.

Signed-off-by: Efraim Eygin <eeygin@nvidia.com>
Four test files now name MpExporterTest, and the scrape and stress tests
load the plugin by name as well as LoadsThroughPluginManager does.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu · commit 5f8a2c72

TL;DR: test_prep_mem_view failed in the DL Python test stage because UCX rejected the locally-registered VRAM memory handle when building a device mem-list on node gb200-nvl4-ts2-87 (invalid memh for md_index=6/7 → NIXL_ERR_BACKEND); the failure is unrelated to PR #2400 and should be fixed by gating/correcting the device-API mem registration rather than re-running.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Run DL Python tests" (node 240) failed: pytest -s test/python → FAILED test/python/test_nixl_api.py::test_prep_mem_view (1 failed, 25 passed, 2 skipped), srun: error: gb200-nvl4-ts2-87: task 0: Exited with exit code 1.

Root cause: Both spawned workers died inside the local overload of prep_mem_view, before ever reaching the remote overload. The UCX-level cause is in the log:

[gb200-nvl4-ts2-87:1735117] ucp_device.c:249 UCX ERROR invalid memh for md_index=6
[gb200-nvl4-ts2-87:1735117] ucp_device.c:341 UCX ERROR failed to pack local mem list element for element=0
[gb200-nvl4-ts2-87:1735117] ucp_device.c:466 UCX ERROR failed to create local mem list handle: Invalid parameter
E ucx_backend.cpp:766] Failed to prepare local memory view: Failed to create device memory list(local): Invalid parameter

(rank 1 identical with md_index=7), surfacing to Python as nixl_cu13._bindings.nixlBackendError: NIXL_ERR_BACKEND at test_nixl_api.py:293.

ucp_device_local_mem_list_create is handed element.memh = md->getMem().getMemh() (src/plugins/ucx/mem_list.cpp:110-122). That memh comes from nixlUcxContext::memReg, which calls ucp_mem_map with only FLAGS|LENGTH|ADDRESS and no memory-type/device hint (src/plugins/ucx/ucx_utils.cpp:641-681). On this node the MD the device path selects for each GPU (index 6 for GPU0, 7 for GPU1 — i.e. per-GPU, so topology-dependent) has no registration in that memh, so UCX rejects the element. The failure is deterministic on this host (both ranks, same error), and the test is only gated on bindings.HAVE_UCX_GPU_DEVICE_API and torch.cuda.device_count() >= 2 (test_nixl_api.py:327-336) — build-time + GPU-count checks that do not verify a usable device lane at runtime.

This has nothing to do with the change under test: branch nix-2062-mp-scrape-tests / PR #2400 only touches prometheus_mp scrape-output tests. The immediately preceding build #2723 passed the same stage on a different node (gb-nvl-082-compute01, allocation 2482579), while #2726 was allocated gb200-nvl4-ts2-87 (allocation 2482813, partition gb200nvl72_ci) — consistent with a node/topology-dependent device-API gap rather than a regression.

Implicated commit: [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] — x41lakazam, "BINDINGS/PYTHON: Expose prepMemView (local + remote overloads)" (#1715), which added test_prep_mem_view. The underlying registration path predates it (0c654f24, Raul Akhmetshin, "PLUGINS/UCX: Device API V2. Backend implementation." #1245).

File: src/plugins/ucx/mem_list.cpp:110-122 (local element built from ucp_mem_map memh); src/plugins/ucx/ucx_utils.cpp:645-652 (ucp_mem_map without device/memory-type hints); test/python/test_nixl_api.py:293 and the skip gates at test/python/test_nixl_api.py:327-336.

Suggested fix:

  1. Short term, unblock CI: strengthen the skip condition on test_prep_mem_view so it is skipped when no usable UCX device lane exists on the host, instead of relying on HAVE_UCX_GPU_DEVICE_API + GPU count. A cheap, correct gate is to attempt the local prep_mem_view once in a fixture and pytest.skip on nixlBackendError, or expose a capability query from the UCX backend (does the selected worker have a device-capable MD for the registered VRAM) and skip on that.
  2. Real fix: make nixlUcxContext::memReg register VRAM so the device path's MD is covered — pass UCP_MEM_MAP_PARAM_FIELD_MEMORY_TYPE with UCS_MEMORY_TYPE_CUDA for VRAM_SEG (and any device/GDA-visibility flag the UCX version requires) so ucp_device_local_mem_list_create finds a valid registration for md_index 6/7.
  3. Improve diagnosability: nixlUcxEngine::prepMemView (src/plugins/ucx/ucx_backend.cpp:756-769) collapses everything to NIXL_ERR_BACKEND; include the failing md_index/ucs_status in the thrown message so the Python-side error is self-explanatory.
  4. Do not treat this as a PR test: cover prometheus_mp's scrape output like the single-process exporter's #2400 signal — re-target the PR verification or merge once the device-API test is correctly gated.

Related: PR #2400 (the PR under test, unrelated to the failure); PR #2194 "bugfix: test: make the device API tests actually run" (same device-API test-enablement area, likely the right place to land the gating fix); PR #1715 (added the failing test).

## What?
`prometheus_mp` no longer requires `NIXL_TELEMETRY_MULTIPROC_DIR`. When
it is unset or empty, the directory defaults to
`/dev/shm/nixl-telemetry-<euid>-<port>` (under the system temp directory
when `/dev/shm` is not writable) and the chosen path is logged at INFO.
Processes of one user that share `NIXL_TELEMETRY_PROMETHEUS_PORT` are
then aggregated behind that port with no other configuration. If the
default directory cannot be used, for example because another user took
the name first, the process warns and runs without telemetry instead of
failing agent construction. An explicit directory still wins and stays
fatal.

## Why?
[NVBug 6575930](https://nvbugspro.nvidia.com/bug/6575930): TensorRT-LLM
with `--tp_size 2` under Dynamo runs two NIXL processes with
`NIXL_TELEMETRY_EXPORTER=prometheus`, one port and no directory; older
releases crash and v1.5.0 exports one process.
[NIX-2062](https://linear.app/nvidia/issue/NIX-2062) makes `prometheus`
load `prometheus_mp`, but `prometheus_mp` throws out of the `nixlAgent`
constructor when the directory is unset. This is one of three NIX-2062
PRs, alongside the test-only #2400; the last one adds the alias and
removes the single-process exporter.

## How?
<details>
<summary>Behaviour, tests, docs</summary>

- Only an unset or empty variable gets the default. The port comes from
the same `NIXL_TELEMETRY_PROMETHEUS_PORT` lookup as the bind address, so
processes configured with different ports keep separate endpoints.
Unrelated jobs of one user on one port share the directory too; the
README says to give concurrent jobs different ports.
- An explicit directory behaves as before: it is created `0700`, a
foreign owner or a group/world-writable mode warns, and one that cannot
be created throws. The default directory differs in one way: when it
cannot be created, or the store cannot be created in it, the exporter
throws `nixlTelemetryBindFailed`, so `nixlTelemetry::create` warns once
and returns null. `storeWriter` now throws a dedicated `storeSetupError`
for its OS failures, which is all the exporter catches, so configuration
errors such as an over-long bucket list stay fatal. It also reserves its
file with `posix_fallocate` instead of `ftruncate`, so a full `/dev/shm`
fails store creation with `ENOSPC` instead of raising `SIGBUS` on the
first write. The `nixlTelemetryBindFailed` and `nixlTelemetry::create`
API docs now name that case next to the bind one.
- The default aggregates only processes of one user that see the same
`/dev/shm` (or, on the temp-dir fallback, resolve the same temp
directory): always within one container, and across a pod's containers
unless one mounts its own `/dev/shm`. Containers that share a network
namespace but not `/dev/shm` need an explicit shared directory; without
one, the first to bind exports its own processes and the others warn,
with no crash.

Tests:
- `MpExporterTest.EmptyMultiprocDirDefaultsToAPerUserPerPortDir`
replaces `MpExporterStandaloneTest.MissingMultiprocDirThrows`: the store
lands in the default directory for the fixture's port, created `0700`,
and `TearDown` removes it.
- `MpExporterTest.UncreatableMultiprocDirThrows`: an explicit directory
under a regular file still throws.
- `MpExporterTest.SquattedDefaultDirRunsWithoutTelemetry`: a regular
file at the default name makes `nixlTelemetry::create` return null with
one warning.
- `MpExporterTest.OverlongBucketListStaysFatalWithTheDefaultDir` and
`MpStoreTest.OsFailureThrowsStoreSetupError`: only OS failures degrade.
- `MpE2ETest.RanksConfiguredWithOnlyAPortAggregateBehindIt`: two forked
processes that set only `NIXL_TELEMETRY_ENABLE`,
`NIXL_TELEMETRY_EXPORTER=prometheus_mp` and the port each create their
telemetry through `nixlTelemetry::create`, and one scrape shows one
`agent_tx_bytes_total` series per process. A follow-up switches the id
to `prometheus`.
- Each new case fails against its own mutation and only that one; with
the exporter change reverted, the default-path and e2e cases fail.

Docs: the `prometheus_mp` README (the default, sharing across jobs and
containers, the stores left behind, the shared-host caveat),
`docs/telemetry.md`, and fern rows for `NIXL_TELEMETRY_MULTIPROC_DIR`,
`NIXL_TELEMETRY_RANK_ENV` and `NIXL_TELEMETRY_MP_STALE_TTL`.

Tested on debug and TSan builds with
`--gtest_filter=Mp*:prometheusTelemetryTest.*:histogramBucketsTest.*:telemetryTest.*:telemetryStressTest.*:LoadedPluginTestFixture.*`:
126 passed, 1 pre-existing skip, no TSan reports.

…ocess exporter (#2405)

## What?
`NIXL_TELEMETRY_EXPORTER=prometheus` now loads the multi-process
exporter (`libtelemetry_exporter_prometheus_mp.so`) through an alias in
the plugin manager, and the single-process exporter is removed.
`prometheus_mp` keeps working and loads the same plugin. This is the
last of three NIX-2062 PRs, after #2402 (default
`NIXL_TELEMETRY_MULTIPROC_DIR`) and #2400 (tests).

What `prometheus` users see:
- Every process of one user on a host that uses the same port is
exported behind that endpoint; before, only the process that won the
bind was.
- Series keep `hostname` and `agent_name`. They gain `local_rank` when
`LOCAL_RANK` (or the variable named by `NIXL_TELEMETRY_RANK_ENV`) is
set, and `pid`/`agent_instance` only while two live agents share a name.
- When a process outside the run holds the port, a rank keeps writing
its metrics and warns, instead of running without telemetry.
- A departed agent's series stay published up to
`NIXL_TELEMETRY_MP_STALE_TTL` (30 s), unless a successor reuses its
name.
- `NIXL_TELEMETRY_HISTOGRAM_BUCKETS_US` accepts at most 32 bounds, and
small store files are left under
`/dev/shm/nixl-telemetry-<euid>-<port>`.

## Why?
[NVBug 6575930](https://nvbugspro.nvidia.com/bug/6575930): TensorRT-LLM
with `--tp_size 2` under Dynamo runs two NIXL processes with
`NIXL_TELEMETRY_EXPORTER=prometheus` on one port; older releases crash
and v1.5.0 exports one process.
[NIX-2062](https://linear.app/nvidia/issue/NIX-2062): `prometheus` and
`prometheus_mp` serve the same purpose, so keep one exporter. With this,
the bug's config exports every process, unchanged.

## How?
<details>
<summary>Code, tests, docs</summary>

- Plugin manager: `loadTelemetryPlugin()` maps `prometheus` to
`prometheus_mp` before composing the plugin path and caches the handle
under both names, so both ids share one `dlopen` handle. A stale
`libtelemetry_exporter_prometheus.so` left in an upgraded install
directory is never opened. A symlink was rejected because the wheel
builder drops `.so` symlinks.
- Build: `src/plugins/telemetry/prometheus/` is deleted, and its
prometheus-cpp lookup, "not found" warning included, moves to
`src/plugins/telemetry/meson.build`. The DOCA histogram parity test
links `nixl_telemetry_mp_exporter_dep` instead of compiling the deleted
exporter.
- Tests:
- Deleted with the exporter: `telemetry_prometheus_test.cpp`,
`telemetry_prometheus_stress_test.cpp` and
`prometheus_telemetry_fixture.h`; `telemetry_histogram_test.cpp` keeps
its five `histogramBucketsTest.*` cases. Their other cases were ported
to the multi-process exporter in #2400 or already had twins in
`telemetry_mp_core_test.cpp`; only the deleted code's use-after-free
regression test and `BindCollisionThrowsBindFailed` go without a
replacement.
- The scrape, stress and bug-shaped e2e tests from #2400 and #2402 now
use the `prometheus` id, and
`MpExporterTest.PrometheusIdLoadsTheSamePlugin` checks that both ids
return one handle named `prometheus_mp`. With the alias disabled, the 11
tests that load `prometheus` fail and the other 71 `Mp*` tests pass.
- `histogram_parity_test` runs the multi-process exporter in a private
directory, and its comparison ignores `local_rank`.
- Docs: the `prometheus_mp` README now describes the one exporter,
selected as `prometheus`. It takes over the deleted README's metrics
table and the allowlist and `NIXL_PLUGIN_DIR` notes, and drops the stale
libcurl requirement (prometheus-cpp is built without push, and neither
plugin links libcurl). `docs/telemetry.md`, the fern user guide and the
env-var rows describe one exporter.
- `nixlTelemetryBindFailed` is unchanged. Whether it needs a more
general name, raised on #2402, is left for a separate PR.

Tested on debug and TSan builds with
`--gtest_filter=Mp*:histogramBucketsTest.*:telemetryTest.*:telemetryStressTest.*:*PluginTestFixture*`:
122 passed, 4 pre-existing skips, no TSan reports.
`histogram_parity_test` passes on debug, and `meson install` ships
`libtelemetry_exporter_prometheus_mp.so` and no
`libtelemetry_exporter_prometheus.so`.

## Summary by CodeRabbit

* **New Features**
* Selecting `prometheus` now uses the multi-process exporter;
`prometheus_mp` remains an alternative name.
* Processes on the same host can share an endpoint and telemetry state.
Exported metrics include host and agent labels, with additional labels
in certain configurations.
* Prometheus and DOCA exporters share metric and histogram definitions.

* **Documentation**
* Updated telemetry guides and configuration references to cover
exporter selection, shared endpoints, metric labels, and counter resets
after process restarts.
