What?

Fixes #1794. Reject duplicate devId registrations in the default S3 and Dell OBJ backends.

Why?

A duplicate devId could silently overwrite the existing object mapping and send data to the wrong object.

How?

Use emplace() to detect duplicates and return NIXL_ERR_INVALID_PARAM. Add tests to make sure the original mapping stays usable and the devId can be registered again after deregistration.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Duplicate device IDs during object memory registration are rejected with an invalid-parameter error instead of replacing the existing registration.
    • Existing registrations remain usable for transfers after a duplicate registration attempt.
    • Device IDs can be reused after the original registration is removed.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

OBJ registration now rejects duplicate devId values in the S3 and Dell implementations. A parameterized unit test checks rejection, transfer use of the original registration, and reuse after deregistration.

Changes

OBJ device ID uniqueness

Layer / File(s) Summary
Registration uniqueness guards
src/plugins/obj/s3/engine_impl.cpp, src/plugins/obj/s3_accel/dell/engine_impl.cpp
Both OBJ implementations reject duplicate devId registrations with NIXL_ERR_INVALID_PARAM instead of overwriting the existing mapping. The Dell documentation lists this return status.
Duplicate registration validation
test/gtest/unit/obj/obj.cpp
The test checks duplicate rejection, transfer use of the original registration, and devId reuse after deregistration.

In cuObj-enabled builds, the new OBJ test can fail because Accel accepts a duplicate registration. The transfer test also does not prove that the original object key was used; resolve these gaps before merging.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit 325bcd24

TL;DR: The build compiled and pushed the Docker image successfully; the failure is the "Allocate DL EP Environment" stage, where salloc waited its full 1-hour --immediate window for a GB200 node on partition gb200nvl72_cx8 and gave up with "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out" — a cluster capacity/availability issue, not a code defect in PR #2131.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage 156 "Allocate DL EP Environment" failed to obtain a slurm allocation on the gb200nvl72_cx8 partition after the 1-hour immediate timeout.

Root cause: salloc -N 1 -p gb200nvl72_cx8 --immediate=3600 --time=01:30:00 --no-shell --account=blackwell was submitted at 09:41:11 and returned at 10:41:19 (exactly 3600s later) with Pending job allocation 1914581 / queued and waiting for resources / error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out. The job never left the queue because no exclusive GB200 node became available within the immediate window — a resource-contention/availability problem on the DL cluster, external to the code under test. The NIXL EP Docker build stage (141) and the compile (123, whose FAILURE is only a consequence of the pipeline being aborted after 156) both actually succeeded. There is no application hang: the single 1-hour gap is slurm legitimately blocking on the --immediate allocation wait, not silent work.

Implicated commit: none — not caused by commit [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] or PR #2131.

File: N/A (CI infrastructure / slurm allocation, salloc call in the DL EP pipeline's "Allocate DL EP Environment" stage).

Suggested fix: Retry the build — this is a transient cluster-capacity failure. If the gb200nvl72_cx8 partition is chronically saturated, either (a) raise the pipeline's immediateTimeout (currently 3600s) so the job can wait longer in queue instead of failing, or (b) add an automatic retry/backoff around the slurm.allocation step, and/or have the DL cluster admins check GB200 availability and reservations for the blackwell account. Note the allocation was queued as slurm job 1914581 — give that ID to a cluster admin if further investigation is needed.

Related: none.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit 7dbeeb3b

TL;DR: The nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep build failed in the "Allocate DL EP Environment" stage because the slurm salloc on partition gb200nvl72_cx8 could not obtain a GB200 node within the 60-minute immediate window and returned "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out" — an infrastructure/capacity issue, not a code defect. Re-run the job once GB200 capacity frees up.

Full analysis

Summary: Build #813 failed while allocating a GB200 test node; salloc timed out waiting for resources.

Root cause: In stage 156 ("Allocate DL EP Environment"), the pipeline ran salloc -N 1 -p gb200nvl72_cx8 --immediate=3600 --time=01:30:00 --no-shell --account=blackwell against dlcluster.nvidia.com. Job 1914581 was queued at 09:41 and remained pending; after the full 3600s immediate timeout the scheduler returned salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out (exit code 1) at 10:41. The job never reached compile/test — the earlier Docker image compile stage succeeded (stage 141). This is a resource-availability/scheduler timeout on the gb200nvl72_cx8 partition, unrelated to commit 7dbeeb3 or PR #2131.

Note on the timestamps: the ~60-minute gap here is not a hang in application code — it is the salloc --immediate=3600 waiting for a node that never became available, which is the designed behavior of that flag. The gap equals the configured immediate timeout exactly.

Implicated commit: unknown — not caused by the PR commit; this is an environment/allocation failure.

File: N/A (pipeline allocation step); salloc invocation for partition gb200nvl72_cx8 in stage "Allocate DL EP Environment".

Suggested fix: Retry the build when GB200 (gb200nvl72_cx8) capacity is available. If these timeouts recur, either raise immediateTimeout for this partition, add a retry-with-backoff around the salloc step, or check the scheduler/partition health on dlcluster.nvidia.com (drained/reserved nodes on gb200nvl72_cx8 under --account=blackwell). No code change to the PR is warranted.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit e9b8138d

TL;DR: The "Build Docker" stage failed because the image build resolves the vLLM version at build time via an unauthenticated GitHub API call, and that call returned HTTP Error 403: rate limit exceeded; pin VLLM_REF (or authenticate/retry the lookup) instead of querying releases/latest on every build.

Full analysis

Summary: nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep #1395 failed in the Build Docker stage (node 55) at Dockerfile STEP 35/38, the BUILD_VLLM_ELASTIC_TEST layer, with exit status 1.

Root cause: That build step derives the vLLM tag when VLLM_REF is empty by calling the GitHub REST API without credentials:

VLLM_REF="$(python3 -c 'import json, urllib.request; r = urllib.request.Request(
  "https://api.github.com/repos/vllm-project/vllm/releases/latest", ...)')"

The log shows the traceback ending in urllib.error.HTTPError: HTTP Error 403: rate limit exceeded at 10:35:32, followed immediately by subprocess exited with status 1 and Error: building at STEP "RUN if [ "${BUILD_VLLM_ELASTIC_TEST}" = "true" ]; then ... VLLM_REF=...". Unauthenticated api.github.com requests are limited to 60/hour per source IP, and the CI hosts are NATed behind a shared egress address, so this is a shared-quota failure that has nothing to do with the code under test. Everything before it succeeded (Mooncake built and installed, azure-sdk-for-cpp built and installed, UCX/NIXL skipped via PRE_INSTALLED_*_ENV), and there are no long gaps in the timestamps — the whole stage ran continuously from 10:32 to the 10:35:37 failure, so this is a hard error, not a timeout or hang.

Two secondary notes visible in the same log, neither fatal here but both worth cleaning up: the internal apt mirror emits NO_PUBKEY [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] GPG warnings, and ldconfig repeatedly warns /opt/hpcx/nccl_spectrum-x_plugin/lib/libdoca_gpunetio_host.so.2 is not a symbolic link.

Implicated commit: c984ce6 — lishapira, "CI: add vLLM + NIXL EP test to the EP CI job (#2154)" — introduced the BUILD_VLLM_ELASTIC_TEST layer with the unpinned releases/latest lookup. The commit under test (e9b8138, branch obj-devid-duplicated, PR #2131) is unrelated to the failure.

File: the EP CI Dockerfile under .ci/dockerfiles/ (the RUN if [ "${BUILD_VLLM_ELASTIC_TEST}" = "true" ] step, Dockerfile STEP 35/38; same commit also added nixl_ep_vllm_release_test.patch copied to /tmp)

Suggested fix: Pin the vLLM release instead of resolving it at build time — set a concrete default such as ARG VLLM_REF=v0.11.0 so the API call is never made on a normal build. If a floating "latest" is genuinely wanted, do the resolution once in the Jenkins job (outside the image build) and pass the result in as --build-arg VLLM_REF=..., using an authenticated request (a token in the Authorization header raises the quota to 5000/hour) plus a retry-with-backoff, and fall back to a known-good pinned tag when the lookup fails. PR #2292 appears to already implement exactly this pinning — landing it will fix this class of failure. Rebuilding #1395 will likely pass once the hourly quota resets, but that is a workaround, not a fix.

Related: #2292 CI: pin the vLLM release for the elastic EP test (direct fix), #2300 nixl_ep: Test vLLM Elastic EP without patching vLLM, #2291 CI: retry git fetches and trim gRPC submodules in dependency builds (same class of network-flakiness hardening), #2154 CI: add vLLM + NIXL EP test to the EP CI job (origin)

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject duplicate OBJ registrations in Accel.

When cuobj_dep is available, the build defines HAVE_CUOBJ_CLIENT and includes Accel in this parameterized test. S3AccelObjEngineImpl::registerMem overwrites devIdToObjKey_ and returns NIXL_SUCCESS for the second OBJ_SEG registration. The assertion at test/gtest/unit/obj/obj.cpp:121-124 expects NIXL_ERR_INVALID_PARAM, so the OBJ unit test can fail in this supported build.

🤖 CI Triage Agent — nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep · commit 121d1fc5

TL;DR: The build itself passed; the job failed because the Slurm salloc on the external DL cluster could not get a gb200nvl72_cx8 node within its one-hour --immediate=3600 window (allocation 2417174 stayed PENDING and was then rejected with "Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out"). This is a cluster-capacity/infra failure unrelated to PR #2131 — the fix is to make the allocation stage retry/requeue rather than hard-fail the pipeline.

Full analysis

Summary: Stage "Allocate DL EP Environment" (node 164) failed after ~60 min when salloc on dlcluster.nvidia.com could not satisfy a 1-node exclusive request on partition gb200nvl72_cx8.

Root cause: No code defect. The preceding stage "Compiling NIXL EP Docker Image for DL" completed successfully at 01:04 (meson/ninja all 322 targets built, nixlbench built, image nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-test:1560 pushed). The allocation stage then ran:

01:05:09 + ssh ... salloc -N 1 -p gb200nvl72_cx8 --job-name=nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-1560 \
                     --immediate=3600 --time=02:00:00 --no-shell --account=blackwell
02:05:18 salloc: lua: Setting job to exclusive mode as no gpu count was specified
02:05:18 salloc: Pending job allocation 2417174
02:05:18 salloc: job 2417174 queued and waiting for resources
02:05:18 salloc: error: Unable to allocate resources: Connection timed out

The ~60-minute gap between the two lines is not a hung process: Slurm batched its output at exit, and the messages themselves say the job was legitimately queued waiting for resources. The job died exactly at the --immediate=3600 deadline (01:05:09 → 02:05:18 ≈ 3609 s, matching the stage duration of 3,609,734 ms). --immediate plus exclusive-mode (triggered by the lua plugin because no --gpus count was specified) means the whole GB200 NVL72 node must be free within the hour, which it was not. Jenkins then surfaced this as script returned exit code 1 → parallel task failed.

Note the cleanup stage reported WARNING: No job ID files found in /mnt/pvc/nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep/ — because salloc never succeeded, jobIdFile was never written, so pending allocation 2417174 may not have been explicitly cancelled by slurm.stopAllForBuild.

Implicated commit: unknown — no commit in this PR is implicated. The branch's HEAD (121d1fc, PR #2131 "fix(obj): reject duplicate devId registrations") touches the OBJ plugin only and built cleanly. The nearest relevant CI change is [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] (NirWolfer, "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr"), which applied the same whole-node-vs-GPU-count fix to a different pipeline.

File: the slurm.allocation invocation for this job — partition:gb200nvl72_cx8, nodes:1, immediateTimeout:3600, jobName:nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep-1560 (Jenkins pipeline definition for nixl-ci-dl-gpu-ep; the file is not present in the repo tree I can read, so it lives in the JJB/shared-lib config)

Suggested fix:

  1. Re-run the build — this is a transient capacity failure, not a code regression. Do not block PR fix(obj): reject duplicate devId registrations #2131 on it.
  2. Make the allocation stage resilient: wrap slurm.allocation in a retry, or treat an --immediate expiry as UNSTABLE/requeue instead of FAILURE, so a busy partition doesn't red-flag unrelated PRs.
  3. Reduce the footprint so the request is schedulable: pass an explicit --gpus=<n> (e.g. --gpus=2) so the lua plugin stops promoting the job to exclusive whole-node mode — exactly the change made for nixl-ci-gpu-vr in [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String].
  4. Write the pending job ID before salloc returns (or parse it from stderr) so slurm.stopAllForBuild can cancel orphaned pending allocations like 2417174; today it logs "No job ID files found".

Related: PR #2131 (the PR under test — not the cause); commit [REDACTED:Hex High Entropy String] "CI: request 2 GPUs instead of a whole node for nixl-ci-gpu-vr" and 1f87bd7 "CI: exclude misconfigured Vera Rubin nodes" as precedent for the same class of allocation fix.
