fix(frontend): return requested logprobs on the Responses API - #18130
/v1/responses accepted include: ["message.output_text.logprobs"] and top_logprobs but always returned "logprobs": [] and "top_logprobs": 0. Clients following the OpenAI Responses spec now receive per-token scores on output_text, in streaming and non-streaming form.
Key Changes
Core logic: about 95 added lines (Rust), excluding tests and comments.
lib/llm/src/protocols/openai/responses/mod.rs: the Responses→chat conversion sets logprobs: true and an explicit top_logprobs (default 0) when include requests scores, and no longer forwards top_logprobs alone, which chat rejects without logprobs: true. Chat token records map onto output_text.logprobs; the response echoes the requested top_logprobs.
lib/llm/src/protocols/openai/responses/stream_converter.rs: each response.output_text.delta carries the scores received since the previous delta; scores from chunks that show no text (reasoning, tool calls, a trailing EOS or score-only chunk) ride on the next delta or on output_text.done, so every backend score reaches the client once, in order.
lib/llm/src/http/service/openai.rs: ResponseParams carries the requested top_logprobs.

Tests added at three levels:
Unit (responses/mod.rs, responses/stream_converter.rs): include_logprobs_enables_chat_logprobs, included_logprobs_map_onto_output_text, requested_logprobs_ride_on_text_deltas_and_done, boundary_chunk_scores_stay_with_their_message, logprobs_stay_empty_without_include.
Integration (lib/llm/tests/responses_http_replay.rs, new fixture text-logprobs.sse): unary_text_logprobs_reach_output_text, streaming_text_logprobs_ride_on_deltas_and_done replay a scored chat stream through the HTTP service.
End to end (tests/serve/test_vllm.py, aggregated_logprobs): ResponsesPayloadWithLogprobs and ResponsesStreamPayloadWithLogprobs run next to the chat and completion logprobs payloads on Qwen3-0.6B (core, gpu_1, post_merge).
The 178 responses lib tests, the 30 responses_http_replay tests, rustfmt and strict Clippy ran with --no-default-features on a CPU host. The serve test ran on a B200 with this PR's vllm-runtime CI image: non-streaming 38 entries == usage.output_tokens; streaming 37 scores on deltas plus the EOS score on output_text.done, 38 total. The GPU rows above come from the same image deployed as a DynamoGraphDeployment and checked with a stdlib client; the top_logprobs: 21 request echoed 20, and a request without include kept empty arrays.
Responses has no logprobs slot on reasoning or function_call items, so their tokens' scores ride on the text part, as chat V2 already documents for logprobs.content. A tool-only response with no text part drops its scores.
/v1/responses accepted include: ["message.output_text.logprobs"] and
top_logprobs but always returned empty logprob arrays and top_logprobs: 0.
- Enable chat logprobs (and an explicit top_logprobs, default 0) when the
include selector asks for scores; do not forward top_logprobs alone, which
chat rejects without logprobs: true.
- Map chat token records onto output_text.logprobs in unary responses.
- Stream each chunk's scores on its response.output_text.delta; scores from
chunks without text ride on the next delta or on output_text.done, so every
backend score reaches the client once, in order.
- Echo the requested top_logprobs on the response object.

The Responses API now forwards requested output-text logprob settings to Chat Completions. Non-streaming and streaming conversions map returned token scores into Responses output and preserve the requested top_logprobs count.

Summary
Request settings and response parameters lib/llm/src/http/service/openai.rs, lib/llm/src/protocols/openai/responses/mod.rs
Request conversion enables backend logprobs only when the include option requests output-text logprobs. ResponseParams retains the requested top_logprobs value.
Non-streaming conversion maps returned token scores to output text and echoes the requested count. Tests cover request conversion and response mapping.
The stream converter queues scores and includes them in text events and reconstructed output. Tests cover score ordering, final events, and echoed counts.
Streaming Responses requests that ask for output-text logprobs can lose the scores attached to the final chunk of a message, which is the case the linked issue cares about. Requests with top_logprobs above 20 report a count different from the one the backend used. Fix the streaming boundary ordering before merging; the count mismatch is minor.

Explanation
The reported changes are limited to Responses request parameter propagation, Responses-to-Chat logprob conversion, streaming and non-streaming score mapping, and related tests. The ResponseParams change in lib/llm/src/http/service/openai.rs supports the requested response metadata. No unrelated change is identified.

Explanation
The pull request description includes all required template sections: Overview, Key Changes, Validation, Issues and Ongoing Work, an issue reference, and the checklist. It provides detailed implementation, test, and validation information. The supplied objectives contain conflicting information about GPU validation, but the description itself is complete.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #18095 requires scoring when message.output_text.logprobs is included, preservation of top_logprobs, score records in streaming and non-streaming responses, and explicit rejection of unsupported scoring requests. The supplied change summary shows the first three objectives: it enables chat logprobs, carries top_logprobs, maps scores, and carries late scores to output_text.done. However, it also states that a tool-only response with no text part drops scores. This silently loses requested score data instead of rejecting the unsupported case. The reported CPU tests do not establish compliance with that requirement.
Resolution
Reject an included logprob request when the response cannot represent the scores, including the documented tool-only case, instead of silently dropping the scores. Add an automated regression test for the rejection and retain coverage for max-output-token termination.

Docstring coverage is 54.55% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 11 functions across 3 files.
Resolution

convert_top_logprobs so a requested count above the supported limit is either
rejected or consistently reported as the capped effective count in both response
modes. Preserve the documented end-to-end behavior and ensure the helper never
reports 21 when conversion sends 20.

- Around line 582-589: Update the stream handling around MessageBoundary::End so
content logprobs are added to pending_logprobs before the ending message closes
and drains the buffer. Skip the normal per-choice queueing for that boundary to
avoid duplicating scores; preserve existing queueing for other boundaries. Add a
regression test verifying the ending message’s scores appear in
output_text.logprobs in both streamed output_text.done and the final response.

- Queue the scores carried by a MessageBoundary::End chunk before the
message closes, so they land on that message's output_text instead of
the next message or nowhere.
- Echo the capped top_logprobs (the count sent to chat), so a request above
20 does not report 21.

Replay a scored chat stream through /v1/responses: the include selector turns
on chat logprobs, unary output_text carries every token record including the
EOS score, streamed deltas carry their chunk's scores and output_text.done
completes the record, and top_logprobs is echoed.

Add Responses payloads that request message.output_text.logprobs and check
that one score per generated token reaches output_text (non-streaming) and
that every output_text.delta carries its scores with output_text.done and
the completed output holding the full record (streaming). Both join the
vLLM aggregated_logprobs serve config next to the chat and completion
logprobs payloads.
