Cover takeover of a stored DGD without an operator-origin annotation. The bootstrap graph is produced by released 1.4 before mutating CREATE admission, then taken over by released 1.5 and 1.6 on the same API server. Subsequent released controllers advance the active snapshot through the normal capture/publication lifecycle, so future candidates consume their immediate predecessor's persisted state.
Key Changes
Production controller changes: 0 lines. This changes upgrade-test and fixture-maintenance tooling.
Keep the original pinned bootstrap provenance; store the active graph under upgrade/compatibility/missing-origin. Its independent lock tracks the released reconciler, source and input digest without altering the frozen v1.6 history inventory.
Capture successful takeover before the intentional worker-edit control. Require and publish that capture and its lock atomically with ordinary history; reject a stale compatibility lineage even if ordinary history and the global marker have advanced.
Export bootstrap JSON through the shared Go golden.WriteManifests writer after raw same-server safety checks. Reuse the same normalization and format as release advancement, with no second Python normalization implementation.

Behavior
Evidence
Published N-2 bootstrap
Re-ran pinned 1.4 → 1.5 → 1.6 on one envtest API server with origin absent and fixed runtime images. DGD spec, worker hash, workload templates and rollout intent remained unchanged.
Final bootstrap export
Real Python-to-Go export produces byte-identical input when only UIDs, owner UIDs, resource versions, creation timestamps and managedFields differ; generation, annotations, spec and status remain intact.
Released-state lineage
Extended the existing lifecycle test with the actual missing-origin path through 1.7 and 1.8. It checks prior-state consumption, missing-capture atomicity, preserved bootstrap provenance and runtime intent, and stale-lineage rejection. The extended regression fails against the prior generator.
Current controller replay
Full upgrade contract passed on a fresh exclusive CPU Kind v1.36.1 cluster, including missing-origin takeover and the intentional worker-edit control; the owned cluster was cleaned up.
Real release-capture boundary
A second focused Kind run enabled DYNAMO_UPGRADE_CAPTURE_DIR; the exported graph retains the original spec/hash and missing origin, excludes the intentional worker edit, and normalizes server metadata. Both owned clusters were cleaned up.
Tooling and serialization
All 22 upgrade-tooling Python tests and the targeted existing Go snapshot/restoration/safety tests passed. Frozen inventory and source-only archive checks passed.
The bootstrap was genuinely recaptured, then normalized through the shared writer. Compared with the previous capture, the only additional semantic differences are newly allocated Service IPs and a status transition timestamp; workload intent, images, templates and worker hash are unchanged. Later release progression preserves the bootstrap provenance and updates only active state and its lock.
The repository-wide pytest marker collector cannot collect optional backend tests with the local stale Python binding; the other applicable file-scoped hooks pass. No model inference or GPU validation is claimed.
Bootstrap remains bounded to 1.4 → 1.5 → 1.6. This is installation-level missing origin, not pre-0.7.1 ancestry. Later adjacent progression does not expand the supported compatibility window.
The frozen v1.6 inventory and the required matrix remain unchanged. Active compatibility state has separate provenance and participates in the shared publication/version gate.
Improved upgrade handling for older installations without origin-version metadata. Upgrades now preserve that metadata as absent while maintaining workload safety, and workload changes can still be applied.
Added coverage for upgrade behavior across releases 1.4.0, 1.5.0, and 1.6.0.
Documentation
Added guidance on the missing-origin upgrade scenario, including its compatibility scope and limitations.
Adds a captured compatibility fixture for installations without an origin-version annotation. Upgrade tests cover takeover by the 1.5.0 and 1.6.0 operators, annotation preservation, and worker-template updates.

Summary
Capture the versioned fixture deploy/operator/hack/capture_missing_origin.py, deploy/operator/internal/controller/testdata/upgrade-compatibility/missing-origin/create.yaml
The capture command builds harnesses for pinned operator revisions 1.4.0, 1.5.0, and 1.6.0. It checks that observations lack an origin annotation and retain selected workload safety fields, then writes the fixture and provenance hashes. The authored scenario uses 1.4.0 images.
Record and verify the fixture deploy/operator/internal/controller/testdata/upgrade-compatibility/missing-origin/input.yaml, .../provenance.json, .../README.md, deploy/operator/hack/test_upgrade_missing_origin.py
The fixture records the captured Kubernetes objects and provenance. The documentation describes its scope and reproduction. The test checks the input hash, absent origin annotation, expected observation versions, and worker hashes.
Add the legacy case to upgrade history deploy/operator/internal/controller/upgrade_clustertest_test.go, deploy/operator/hack/test_upgrade_versions.py
The historical upgrade setup loads and runs the missing-origin case. The release-cycle test removes the origin annotation from the oldest deployment and checks that it remains absent after capture.
Test production takeover and workload updates deploy/operator/internal/controller/upgrade_missing_origin_clustertest_test.go
The cluster test checks takeover, manifest replay, rejection of an invented origin, and propagation of a worker-template edit while the origin annotation remains absent.
The fixture currently fails a CI check. Add the header to the committed file and its generator before merging.

Explanation
The title "test(operator): cover missing-origin N-2 takeover" is specific and matches the main change. The PR adds compatibility tests and a fixture for taking over a stored DGD that lacks an operator-origin annotation, captured through released 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 controllers. The PR reports no production operator logic changes, which fits the test-only scope of the title. The title is concise, uses the conventional commit format, and avoids file lists and vague terms.

Explanation
Issue #17564 has coding requirements, and the PR addresses them. capture_missing_origin.py runs pinned 1.4.0, 1.5.0, and 1.6.0 controller stages on one API server. It records that 1.4.0 created the DGD before mutating admission and records that this is installation-level state, not pre-0.7.1 ancestry. The capture rejects origin materialization and workload-safety changes. The committed fixture and test_upgrade_missing_origin_clustertest_test.go verify absent origin, DGD/PCS identity and workload safety, capture/write/read preservation, rejection of an invented origin, and worker-edit propagation. test_upgrade_versions.py adds missing-origin coverage across two publication cycles. The fixture remains separate from the rolling inventory.

Explanation
The changed files support issue #17564. The capture script, provenance, fixture, documentation, lifecycle test, and cluster test implement or validate the requested compatibility scenario. The changes do not alter production operator logic or the frozen v1.6 inventory. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Two findings in the missing-origin fixture lifecycle: include its actual saved state in release advancement/version gating, and export it through the shared normalized snapshot writer. Full reasoning and regression coverage are inline.
