Overview:

Closes #17466. With the SGLang chat processor, a tool-call delimiter the model reproduces from untrusted input (a tool result, a pasted file) is parsed as a real tool call, because the parser only ever sees detokenized text and <tool_call> is an ordinary added token (151657 for Qwen3, 154843 for GLM-5) that a literal <tool_call> in the prompt encodes to as well. This PR makes the frontend use the token ids it still has: the parser is opened and closed by delimiter token ids, and an opt-in flag keeps delimiter tokens out of message content on the way in.

Details:

Output side (always on when the detector's two delimiters are single tokens) -- SglangStreamingPostProcessor splits each engine batch at the delimiter token ids and runs the pieces through the existing stateful pipeline (incremental decode, stop strings, reasoning parser) as if the engine had streamed them separately. The tool-call parser is opened only by the opening delimiter's id and closed by the closing id; text outside a call bypasses the parser and goes to content. A call is held from its opening id to its closing id (or finish) and released whole: to the parser when no delimiter inside it was spelled from sub-words, as content otherwise, so a spelled delimiter can neither end a call early nor start a second one. A delimiter the model spells out of sub-words is therefore never parsed as a call, while genuine calls are unchanged: the existing test_sglang_tool_calls.py suite passes as is. The delimiters come from the detector's own bot_token / eot_token, with the detector built against the served tokenizer the way FunctionCallParser builds it (Hunyuan resolves its suffixed delimiters from the vocabulary; whitespace stripped, so qwen25's <tool_call>\n resolves too); detectors with an empty or multi-token delimiter keep the previous behaviour, with a warning. JsonArrayParser (forced tool choice) is untouched.

Input side (--isolate-tool-call-markers / DYN_ISOLATE_TOOL_CALL_MARKERS, default off) -- message content (string or text part, any role) that contains a delimiter is tokenized with a copy of the fast tokenizer whose delimiter added-tokens are removed, so the model sees <, tool, _call, > and has no single token to copy back. The template is rendered twice (real content, and per-span sentinels) and the two renderings are aligned piece by piece, accepting the whitespace-stripped assistant content templates emit. Delimiters the template emits itself (tool instructions, prior assistant tool_calls) keep their ids, and content without a delimiter tokenizes byte-for-byte as before. A span that cannot be aligned, a tokenizer that cannot be copied, or a parser whose delimiters are not single tokens for the tokenizer fails closed with PreprocessError rather than encoding delimiter ids. The flag is rejected at startup unless --dyn-chat-processor=sglang, the only processor that reads it.

Default for the input flag -- maintainer input wanted. This PR ships it off because it changes the token sequence the model sees for delimiter-bearing content, and that effect has not been measured across models. Since the thing it prevents is a prompt-injection path (an attacker who controls a tool result can make the client execute a tool call the model never issued), there is a case for defaulting it to on for the SGLang processor, with --no-isolate-tool-call-markers as the opt-out. I lean towards on; if you agree I will flip the default in this PR, otherwise it stays opt-in and the docs say to evaluate it per model.

Why both: the output gate alone does not stop the echo when the prompt carries the delimiter token -- the model copies the token and the gate rightly opens. Isolating the input removes that token; gating the output makes the parser's decision depend on the id rather than on text.

Not in this PR: the Rust preprocessor and the vLLM processor also parse tool calls from text and are likely affected the same way; happy to follow up once the approach here is agreed.

Where should the reviewer start?

components/src/dynamo/frontend/sglang_prepost.py:

  • tool_call_marker_strings / tool_call_marker_token_ids -- which delimiters, and whether they are single tokens.
  • SglangStreamingPostProcessor.process_output -> _process_segment / _gate_tool_parser_text -- the split and the gate. _process_segment is the previous body of process_output with the gate inserted before the parser call.
  • encode_chat_prompt_isolating_markers / _align_spans -- the opt-in input path.

Then components/src/dynamo/frontend/tests/test_sglang_tool_call_echo.py.

Testing

  • New test_sglang_tool_call_echo.py (Qwen3-0.6B tokenizer, hermes): delimiter ids; echo of the injected block -> content, finish_reason=stop at chunk sizes 1/3/all; genuine call still parsed; echo followed by a genuine call in one response; reasoning then call; logprobs preserved across a split batch; a stop string beginning with <tool_call> neither swallows a genuine call nor stops matching; input isolation for user/system/tool content, text parts, and a delimiter assembled across adjacent text parts; token-for-token parity with apply_chat_template outside the isolated span; stripped assistant history; forged span sentinel; fail-closed on an unalignable template and on an encoder copy that keeps an active id; detector construction failure raised; flag off and no-parser paths unchanged; client truncation/max_length honored on the isolated path and non-reproducible tokenizer controls rejected.
  • New test_isolate_tool_call_markers_args.py: the flag is accepted with --dyn-chat-processor=sglang and rejected with a non-SGLang processor.
  • pytest components/src/dynamo/frontend/tests (without test_fd_limit.py, which needs the full runtime): 719 passed, 1 skipped. Each regression test fails on the revision before the one that adds it and passes after.
  • black 23.1.0 / isort 5.12.0 / flake8 (repo args) / mypy on the changed files.

Review round 1 (second commit)

  • P1 (rmccorm4): delimiter assembled across adjacent text parts bypassed isolation under list-content templates. Fixed in _isolate_marker_spans: when the joined text of a message's parts contains a delimiter, every non-empty text part becomes its own span, and spans are tokenized one at a time so no token straddles a part boundary. Test: test_delimiter_assembled_across_text_parts_is_isolated (a template that concatenates parts like Qwen3-VL; the plain encoding carries both ids, the isolated one none).
  • P2 (rmccorm4): a genuine <tool_call> held as a stop-string prefix lost its identity. Fixed in _filter_stop_string_delta: it records the delimiters inside the held text, never splits a delimiter between emitted and held text, and returns the delimiters the emitted text carries; _gate_tool_parser_text takes that list. Tests: test_delimiter_held_as_stop_prefix_keeps_its_identity[1/3/1000], test_stop_string_beginning_with_a_delimiter_still_stops.
  • CodeRabbit: detector construction failure now logged and re-raised; _marker_free_encoder rejects a copy that still encodes a delimiter to an active id; core + timeout(180) markers added.
  • dynamo-review-agent: --isolate-tool-call-markers rejected unless --dyn-chat-processor=sglang; redundant test comments/docstrings and the chunk size with no distinct coverage removed.

Review round 2 (third commit, cb5e59bfe5)

  • dynamo-review-agent: text released from the stop-string buffer was routed as one region by the last delimiter present, so a sub-word-spelled call that followed a held genuine </tool_call> reached the parser. _filter_stop_string_delta now reports each released delimiter with its offset and _process_segment cuts the text at those offsets (_split_at_markers), routing each piece by the gate state at its own boundary. Tests: test_echo_after_a_held_closing_delimiter_stays_content[1/3/1000], test_text_held_ahead_of_a_delimiter_is_content. Frontend tests: 698 passed, 1 skipped.

Review round 3 (fourth commit, 09b543d1b2)

  • dynamo-review-agent: --isolate-tool-call-markers had no effect on the DeepSeek-V4 encoder path (_render_deepseek_v4_prompt_token_ids), which encodes delimiters as their real ids. That path now rejects requests while the flag is on (PreprocessError) rather than silently skipping isolation; isolating inside the DSv4 encoder is a follow-up. Test: test_deepseek_v4_encoder_path_fails_closed. Also dropped the _merge_choices docstring it flagged as restating the code.

Review round 4 (fifth commit, 3c40f834be)

  • dynamo-review-agent: claimed _merge_choices drops earlier parallel tool calls when one batch is split into several segments. Not reproducible: only the finishing segment attaches tool_calls (accumulated by tool_index across segments), and two genuine parallel calls in one batch come back as index 0 and 1 at batch sizes 1/3/1000 before and after. The overwrite was still fragile, so it now merges by call index. Test: test_parallel_genuine_calls_in_one_batch_all_survive[1/3/1000] (a direct _merge_choices test was dropped in round 5 since the production path never hands it that combination).

Review round 5 (sixth commit, 44a185e6f9)

  • dynamo-review-agent: _incremental_decode holds back a token run that ends in an incomplete byte sequence, so the delimiter-id segment decoded after it carries that retained text ahead of the genuine delimiter; if the retained text spelled the same delimiter from sub-word tokens, find picked the echo and the gate flipped there. Reproduced (Qwen3-0.6B: echoed <tool_call>, first byte token of U+12000, then the genuine id in one batch -> content see , no tool call). The segment's delimiter is its last token, so it is now located with rfind. Test: test_echo_retained_by_byte_fallback_before_a_genuine_id. Also: one representative non-SGLang processor case, a restating docstring removed. Frontend tests: 702 passed, 1 skipped.

Review round 6 (seventh commit, 3ce2101e23)

  • biswapanda [P1]: once the gate was open, text inside a call went straight to the text parser, so a sub-word </tool_call><tool_call> between one genuine opening id and one genuine closing id ended the call and started another (reproduced: two calls at chunk 1/3). The call is now held from its opening id to its closing id (or finish) and released whole, to the parser only when no delimiter inside was spelled; otherwise the whole call is content. The finish-time re-parse is forced for responses with a held call, because the streaming parser reports one event per chunk. The earlier "known limit" paragraph in this description was wrong and is removed. Tests: test_spelled_delimiters_inside_a_genuine_call_add_no_call[1/3/1000], test_spelled_closing_inside_a_genuine_call_does_not_end_it[1/3/1000], test_genuine_call_left_open_at_finish_is_still_parsed[1/3/1000].
  • biswapanda [P2]: the detector used for marker discovery was built without the tokenizer, so Hunyuan's suffixed delimiters were missed, the lookup returned {} and gate + isolation went silently off. The detector is built with the configured tokenizer; the marker cache moved from a per-name lru_cache onto the tokenizer; a non-single-token result is logged and --isolate-tool-call-markers rejects requests for that parser/tokenizer pair. Tests: test_hunyuan_delimiters_come_from_the_configured_tokenizer (real HunyuanDetector), test_isolation_rejects_delimiters_that_are_not_single_tokens. Frontend tests: 713 passed, 1 skipped.

Review round 7 (ninth commit, 6fb4315ec0)

  • dynamo-review-agent: apply_chat_template(tokenize=True) forwards truncation/max_length/padding/tokenizer_kwargs/return_tensors to tokenizer.__call__; the isolated path (render with tokenize=False, encode pieces) dropped them, so the same request tokenized differently only because its content contained a delimiter. _truncate_prompt_token_ids now applies truncation + max_length (model_max_length fallback, truncation_side) to the assembled ids; _reject_unsupported_tokenizer_controls fails closed on padding, non-empty tokenizer_kwargs and return_tensors. Tests: test_isolated_prompt_honors_truncation[True/longest_first], test_isolated_prompt_truncates_on_the_tokenizer_side, test_max_length_without_truncation_does_not_truncate, test_unsupported_tokenizer_controls_fail_closed[3], test_inactive_tokenizer_controls_are_accepted.
  • dynamo-review-agent: the parallel-call test runs at batch 1000 only (the gate buffers a genuine call from opening to closing id and reparses at finish, so smaller batches add no distinct path); test_genuine_delimiter_ids_still_call[1/4/1000] keeps the boundary coverage. Frontend tests: 719 passed, 1 skipped.

Walkthrough

The SGLang frontend adds an option to isolate tool-call delimiter text in prompt content. Its streaming post-processor uses delimiter token IDs to route tool-call parsing. Tests and documentation cover the option, prompt encoding, and streaming behavior.

Changes

SGLang tool-call marker handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure and propagate marker isolation
components/src/dynamo/frontend/frontend_args.py, components/src/dynamo/frontend/sglang_processor.py, docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/modular-components/backends/sglang/chat-processor.md, docs/fern/pages/reference/components/frontend-configuration.mdx
Adds the default-off --isolate-tool-call-markers option and passes its value through the SGLang processor and preprocess worker. The configuration documentation lists the option and environment variable.
Isolate delimiters in prompt content
components/src/dynamo/frontend/sglang_prepost.py, components/src/dynamo/frontend/tests/test_sglang_tool_call_echo.py, docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/modular-components/backends/sglang/chat-processor.md
When enabled, preprocessing encodes delimiter-bearing message spans without delimiter added-token matching while retaining template-emitted delimiter IDs. It raises PreprocessError when the rendered template content cannot be aligned. Tests cover message roles, text parts, default behavior, and alignment failures.
Route streamed output by marker token ID
components/src/dynamo/frontend/sglang_prepost.py, components/src/dynamo/frontend/tests/test_sglang_tool_call_echo.py
The streaming post-processor splits batches at known delimiter IDs and routes delimiter-bearing and in-call text to the tool parser. Tests cover echoed delimiters, genuine calls, content around calls, reasoning, batching, and log probabilities.

Explanation

The title names the main change: the SGLang tool-call parser is now gated on delimiter token IDs instead of detokenized text. It follows the fix(frontend) convention and is specific. It does not mention the opt-in input isolation flag, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The PR addresses the coding requirements in #17466. sglang_prepost.py derives detector delimiters, requires single-token delimiter IDs, splits output batches at those IDs, and gates parser text between the opening and closing IDs. The added tests cover subword echoes as content, genuine calls, mixed responses, reasoning, batching, and logprobs. The opt-in isolate_tool_call_markers path removes delimiter added-tokens only from delimiter-bearing message content, preserves template-emitted delimiters, and fails closed on alignment or tokenizer-copy errors. The flag is exposed and propagated through the SGLang frontend. The documented scope excludes Rust and vLLM processors, as allowed by #17466.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within #17466. The argument wiring, SGLang preprocessing and postprocessing changes, focused tests, and SGLang documentation support the delimiter-token gating and optional input isolation objectives. No unrelated processor implementation is added. Rust and vLLM work remains outside this PR, consistent with the issue scope.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template closely. It has Overview, Key Changes (Details), Validation (Testing), and Issues sections, plus a Closes #17466 link. It explains the output-side delimiter gating and the opt-in input isolation flag, the reason each is needed, the files to review, the test coverage, and the review rounds. The checklist item for the /pr-checklist skill is not ticked, and the template's section headings differ slightly from the ones in the description (for example, 'Details' and 'Testing' instead of 'Key Changes' and 'Validation'). The description also leaves the default for --isolate-tool-call-markers as an open question for maintainers. That is a stated decision point, not a missing section.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 42.86% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 35 functions across 4 files. Move the tokenizers import to module scope.

from tokenizers import Tokenizer as HfTokenizer runs inside _marker_free_encoder. Project guidelines require top-level imports for changed Python code. tokenizers is not an optional dependency here. It arrives through transformers, which this project declares as a runtime requirement. Moving the import to the top does not add a dependency, because the module already imports sglang at module level.

Move the tokenizers import to module level.

This SGLang test already imports SGLang at module scope, so deferring Tokenizer does not provide collection protection. The repository also requires transformers, which supplies the tokenizer dependency for this test.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Reject --isolate-tool-call-markers when the chat processor is not sglang.

Only the SGLang processor reads isolate_tool_call_markers. With the default dynamo processor or with vllm, DYN_ISOLATE_TOOL_CALL_MARKERS=true is a silent no-op. The operator believes echoed delimiters are isolated, but no isolation happens. FrontendConfig.validate() already rejects other processor-specific misconfigurations, so this flag can follow the same pattern.

Add this check to FrontendConfig.validate():

if self.isolate_tool_call_markers and self.chat_processor != "sglang":
    raise ValueError(
        "--isolate-tool-call-markers requires --dyn-chat-processor=sglang"

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: The previously reported unsupported-option defect remains: --isolate-tool-call-markers is accepted globally, but only the SGLang chat-engine construction consumes it. With the default Dynamo processor or the vLLM processor it silently does nothing, so operators can believe input delimiters are isolated when they are not. Reject the enabled option unless --dyn-chat-processor=sglang.
  • Original discussion: The reported isolation bypass remains present: _marker_free_encoder removes matching added_tokens but never verifies the copied encoder's output. For a tokenizer whose underlying model still encodes a delimiter to the same active marker ID, --isolate-tool-call-markers leaves the unsafe ID in message content despite claiming fail-closed isolation. Validate each copied encoding against the active marker IDs and reject the request if any remain.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: _marker_free_encoder removes the marker from added_tokens but never checks whether the copied tokenizer still encodes that marker to the same active delimiter token ID. For a dynamically discovered fast tokenizer whose base model vocabulary can still produce that ID, enabling isolation leaves the delimiter copyable and the output gate treats the echo as a genuine tool call. Validate each copied marker encoding against tool_call_marker_token_ids and reject an encoder that retains an active ID.
  • Original discussion: _marker_free_encoder still removes matching added-token entries without verifying that the copied tokenizer no longer emits an active delimiter ID. If the marker remains in the base vocabulary under that same ID, opt-in input isolation is bypassed; compare copied encodings with the active marker IDs and reject such an encoder.
  • Original discussion: tool_call_marker_strings still catches every detector-constructor failure and returns None, silently disabling delimiter-ID gating for that parser. Log and propagate the construction failure instead of falling back to text-only parsing.

Re the PR-level finding that --isolate-tool-call-markers was accepted under every chat processor: b5ec4af rejects it in FrontendConfig.validate unless --dyn-chat-processor=sglang (test_isolate_tool_call_markers_args.py), and the help text and docs say so.

One open question for maintainers, also in the description: whether the input flag should default to on for the SGLang processor. It closes a prompt-injection path (a tool result that contains <tool_call> can make the client execute a call the model never issued), at the cost of changing the token sequence for delimiter-bearing content. I lean towards on with --no-isolate-tool-call-markers as the opt-out, and will flip it in this PR if you agree.

Most tool-call formats open and close a call with a delimiter the tokenizer
stores as one added token (`<tool_call>` is 151657 for Qwen3, 154843 for
GLM-5). That token is not reserved: a literal `<tool_call>` inside a tool
result or a pasted file encodes to the same id the model emits to open a
call, and decodes back to identical text. SGLang's detectors work on text,
so the frontend turned a faithful echo of such content into a real tool
call (finish_reason=tool_calls, arguments taken from the injected text),
even when the user asked only for the text back.

The frontend still has the token ids, so it uses them:

* SglangStreamingPostProcessor splits each batch at the delimiter token
ids of the active detector and runs the pieces through the existing
stateful pipeline. The tool-call parser is opened only by the opening
delimiter's id and closed by the closing id; text outside a call bypasses
the parser and is returned as content, so a delimiter the model spells
out of sub-words is never parsed as a call. Genuine calls are unchanged.
Active for any detector whose two delimiters are single tokens (the
delimiters come from the detector's bot_token/eot_token, whitespace
stripped); otherwise the previous text-only behaviour is kept.

* `--isolate-tool-call-markers` (`DYN_ISOLATE_TOOL_CALL_MARKERS`, default
off) tokenizes message content that contains a delimiter with a copy of
the fast tokenizer whose delimiter added-tokens are removed, so the model
sees `<`, `tool`, `_call`, `>` and has no single token to copy back.
Delimiters the chat template emits itself (tool instructions, prior
assistant tool_calls) keep their ids; content without a delimiter
tokenizes byte-for-byte as before. The two renderings are aligned piece
by piece (accepting the whitespace-stripped assistant content templates
emit); a span that cannot be aligned, or a tokenizer that cannot be
copied, fails closed with PreprocessError instead of encoding delimiter
ids. Off by default because it changes what the model sees for such
  content.

Known limit: inside a genuine call the model's own argument text is still
parsed as text, so a delimiter echoed within an argument can cut the call
short. That cannot create a call the model did not open.

Tests (Qwen3-0.6B tokenizer, hermes): delimiter ids, echo -> content at
several chunk sizes, genuine call, echo followed by a genuine call,
reasoning then call, logprobs across a split batch; input isolation for
user/system/tool content and text parts, parity outside the span,
stripped assistant history, forged span sentinel, fail-closed, flag off.

Signed-off-by: Daiming Yang <ydaiming@amazon.com>
Two reproduced bypasses of the first revision:

* Input isolation scanned each text part on its own. Templates that keep
list content (Qwen3-VL) render adjacent parts back to back, so
`"<tool_"` + `"call>"` never contained a delimiter, took the plain
tokenization fallback and restored both delimiter ids. When the joined
text of a message's parts contains a delimiter, every non-empty text part
of that message is now its own span; spans are tokenized one at a time,
so no token can straddle a part boundary.

* A request stop string that begins with a delimiter (`<tool_call>STOP`)
held the genuine `<tool_call>` back as a possible stop prefix and later
released it with no delimiter identity, so the parser gate never opened
and a valid call came back as content. `_filter_stop_string_delta` now
tracks the delimiters inside the held text, never splits a delimiter
between emitted and held text, and returns the delimiters the emitted
text carries; the gate accepts that list.

Review follow-ups:

* `_marker_free_encoder` verifies the copied tokenizer no longer encodes a
delimiter to an active delimiter id and fails closed otherwise.
* A tool-call detector that fails to construct is logged and re-raised
instead of silently disabling the gate for that parser.
* `--isolate-tool-call-markers` is rejected at startup unless
`--dyn-chat-processor=sglang`, which is the only processor that reads it.
* Tests: `core` and `timeout` markers; redundant comments and a chunk size
with no distinct coverage removed; regression tests for both bypasses,
the encoder check, the detector failure and the flag validation.

Rebased onto main (37f2f0a712), no content change: 0254fb9279 -> c89bdeef29, b5ec4af953 -> 98af701438. The Operator lowering and upgrade tests failure on the previous head was unrelated to this PR (it touches no deploy/operator/ file): the workflow's changes filter diffs pull_request.base.sha (the base branch tip at event time) against HEAD rather than the merge-base, so #17453 landing on main made the job run here, and TestClusterHistoryStorage/stored then failed on the old base. The rebase clears both.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: This remains present at head. Stop-string buffering reports only which delimiter strings occur in the released text, without their offsets, and lines 2102-2106 route the entire released region according to the last reported marker. Consequently, when a genuine closing delimiter is followed in the same released region by a complete call spelled with ordinary subword tokens, that later text is still sent through the tool parser and can be reparsed as a tool call. Preserve marker offsets through stop buffering and split parser/plain-text routing at each marker boundary.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: stop-prefix buffering retains marker strings but discards their offsets, so _gate_tool_parser_text routes the entire released buffer through the parser whenever any real delimiter is present. A genuine closing delimiter followed by subword-spelled tool-call text can therefore produce a false tool call. Preserve marker offsets and route each interval according to gate state.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: stop-string buffering retains delimiter identity but not delimiter offsets. When buffered text is released, _gate_tool_parser_text sends the entire region to the tool parser if it contains any genuine delimiter. A genuine closing delimiter followed by a subword-spelled complete call can therefore be reparsed as a tool call even though no opening delimiter token was generated. Preserve offsets and route each intervening span according to gate state at its actual delimiter boundary.

Text released from the stop-string buffer can hold a genuine delimiter
together with text generated before or after it. Routing the whole
released region by the last delimiter present sent a sub-word-spelled
call that followed a genuine closing delimiter into the tool parser.

`_filter_stop_string_delta` now reports each released delimiter with its
offset, and `_process_segment` cuts the released text at those offsets so
every piece is routed by the gate state at its own boundary. Text whose
delimiter cannot be located keeps the previous whole-region behaviour.

Tests: a sub-word echo released with a held closing delimiter stays
content (chunk sizes 1/3/all); text held ahead of a delimiter is content.

Re the second-round finding on stop buffering (a sub-word-spelled call released in the same region as a held genuine </tool_call> was routed to the parser): fixed in cb5e59bfe5. _filter_stop_string_delta now returns each released delimiter with its offset, and _process_segment cuts the released text at those offsets (_split_at_markers) so each piece is routed by the gate state at its own boundary; a delimiter whose text cannot be located falls back to the previous whole-region routing. Regression tests: test_echo_after_a_held_closing_delimiter_stays_content[1/3/1000] (the 1000 case reproduced the false call before the fix) and test_text_held_ahead_of_a_delimiter_is_content. Frontend tests: 698 passed, 1 skipped.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: The redundant _merge_choices docstring remains at the reviewed head; it merely restates the private helper’s name and adjacent call without preserving a constraint or rationale.
  • Original discussion: Verified still present: released stop-prefix text retains delimiter strings but not their offsets, so the whole released span may be routed to the parser based on a closing delimiter. A following subword-spelled tool-call block can then be reparsed as a real call without any opening delimiter token. Preserve delimiter offsets and split parser routing at each actual delimiter.

Round 3 (09b543d): the DeepSeek-V4 encoder path now rejects requests while --isolate-tool-call-markers is on (test_deepseek_v4_encoder_path_fails_closed), and the _merge_choices docstring is gone. The summary item about stop-prefix text losing delimiter offsets describes the head before cb5e59b: since that commit _filter_stop_string_delta returns (offset, delimiter) pairs and _process_segment splits the released text at them (_split_at_markers), with test_echo_after_a_held_closing_delimiter_stays_content[1000] as the regression test. Frontend tests: 699 passed, 1 skipped.

`_merge_choices` replaced the accumulated `tool_calls` with the latest
segment's list. Tool calls are only emitted by the finishing segment
today, so nothing was dropped, but merge by call index anyway so a later
segment can never shadow an earlier one. Regression tests: two genuine
parallel calls in one batch survive at batch sizes 1/3/1000, and a direct
`_merge_choices` test exercises the index merge.

…ed text

`_incremental_decode` holds back a token run that ends in an incomplete
byte sequence, so the delimiter-id segment decoded after it can carry
that retained text ahead of the genuine delimiter. If the retained text
spells the same delimiter from ordinary sub-word tokens, `find` picked
the echoed occurrence and the gate flipped at the wrong boundary: the
genuine call was lost and the echo was eaten. The segment's delimiter is
its last token, so locate it with `rfind`.

Review follow-ups: drop the `_merge_choices` helper test (the production
path never hands it that combination; the end-to-end parallel-call test
stays), one representative non-SGLang processor case, and a restating
docstring.

…ve markers from the tokenizer

Review round 6 (biswapanda):

[P1] Once the gate was open, text inside a call went straight to the
text-based parser, so a `</tool_call><tool_call>` spelled from sub-words
between one genuine opening id and one genuine closing id ended the call
and started another. The processor now holds the call from its opening id
to its closing id (or finish) and releases it whole: to the parser when no
delimiter inside was spelled, as content otherwise. Tool calls were already
emitted only at finish, so the client sees no difference. A call released
whole reaches the streaming parser in one chunk, and that parser reports
one event per chunk, so the finish-time re-parse of the full text is forced
for such responses.

[P2] `tool_call_marker_strings` built the detector without the tokenizer.
Hunyuan resolves suffixed delimiters (`<tool_calls:opensource>`) from the
vocabulary, so the bare construction named delimiters the model never
emits, the marker lookup returned {} and both the gate and isolation went
silently off. The detector is now built with the configured tokenizer the
way `FunctionCallParser` builds it, the marker cache lives on the tokenizer
instead of a per-name lru_cache, a non-single-token result is logged, and
`--isolate-tool-call-markers` rejects requests for such a parser/tokenizer
pair instead of encoding them unprotected.

Tests: spelled delimiters inside a genuine call yield no call at batch
1/3/1000 (previously two calls at 1/3), a spelled closing does not end the
call, a call left open at finish is still parsed, Hunyuan markers come from
the configured tokenizer, isolation rejects non-single-token delimiters.

When a delimiter-bearing span is isolated, this manual per-piece encoding bypasses tokenizer controls in template_kwargs that the normal apply_chat_template(tokenize=True) path honors, including truncation, max_length, and tokenizer_kwargs. The same accepted request can therefore produce an overlong or otherwise different prompt solely because its content contains a delimiter. Preserve the whole-sequence tokenizer controls after assembling the isolated IDs, or reject unsupported controls explicitly.

🤖 AI Fix

Apply the effective tokenizer-level apply_chat_template options to the assembled isolated token sequence before returning it.

Good catch, fixed in 6fb4315. apply_chat_template(tokenize=True) forwards truncation/max_length/padding/tokenizer_kwargs/return_tensors to tokenizer.__call__, and the isolated path dropped all of them. Now _truncate_prompt_token_ids applies truncation + max_length (with the model_max_length fallback and truncation_side) to the assembled ids, and _reject_unsupported_tokenizer_controls fails closed on padding, non-empty tokenizer_kwargs and return_tensors, which cannot be reproduced piecewise. Tests: test_isolated_prompt_honors_truncation[True/longest_first] (asserts the isolated prompt is cut to the same 12 ids the plain path produces), test_isolated_prompt_truncates_on_the_tokenizer_side, test_max_length_without_truncation_does_not_truncate, test_unsupported_tokenizer_controls_fail_closed[3], test_inactive_tokenizer_controls_are_accepted; the first five fail on the previous head.

markers must come from the same tokenizer the active parser uses."""

The [1] and [3] cases do not protect a distinct parallel-call outcome: the delimiter gate buffers from the genuine opening ID through the closing ID and reparses that same complete accumulated text at finish regardless of upstream batch size. Retaining [1000] still detects dropping either parallel call, while test_genuine_delimiter_ids_still_call[1/4/1000] already protects delimiter routing across streamed and single-batch delivery.

🤖 AI Fix

Run this parallel-call test only with batch size 1000 and rely on the retained genuine-call parametrization for streaming-boundary coverage.

Agreed, done in 6fb4315: test_parallel_genuine_calls_in_one_batch_all_survive now runs at batch 1000 only; test_genuine_delimiter_ids_still_call[1/4/1000] keeps the streaming-boundary coverage.

✅ Dynamo PR CI passed — run 40973037091 (attempt 1) on 6fb4315ec0

Gate checks: ✅ backend-status-check · ✅ deploy-status-check · ✅ dynamo-status-check

Posted automatically by Devin for run 40973037091. Updated on every full-CI run of this PR.

`apply_chat_template(tokenize=True)` forwards `truncation`, `max_length`,
`padding`, `tokenizer_kwargs` and `return_tensors` to `tokenizer.__call__`.
The delimiter-isolating path renders with `tokenize=False` and encodes the
pieces itself, so a request that carried these controls was tokenized
differently only because its content contained a tool-call delimiter.

Apply `truncation`/`max_length` to the assembled ids the way the tokenizer
does (`model_max_length` fallback, `truncation_side`), and reject the controls
that cannot be reproduced piecewise (`padding`, `tokenizer_kwargs`,
`return_tensors`) with a PreprocessError instead of silently dropping them.

Also run the parallel-call test only at batch 1000: the gate buffers a genuine
call from its opening id to its closing id and reparses the same accumulated
text at finish, so smaller batches exercise no distinct path there.

@biswapanda thanks for the approval and the vetting. One more commit landed after it (6fb4315ec0) addressing the two remaining dynamo-review-agent threads: client truncation/max_length are now honored on the isolated path (they were dropped because that path renders with tokenize=False), non-reproducible tokenizer controls (padding, tokenizer_kwargs, return_tensors) are rejected instead of silently ignored, and the parallel-call test is trimmed to batch 1000. No behavior change for prompts without delimiters. Since /ok to test is per-sha, the NVIDIA unit tests will need another vetting when you have a moment.
