docs(observability): document the request identifier model and correlation rules - #17451
Document the request identifier model: which ids exist on one request, who sets each, what each is used for, and how they appear in logs, traces, and responses. Docs only.
Builds on #17032 (merged 2026-10-29 as 261a106), which makes the behavior described here true on every route.
Details:
Logging Reference (logging.mdx): add the request_id JSONL field, and rewrite "Request Correlation" as the caller-facing contract. request_id is server generated and keys the request; x-request-id is correlation only and is echoed on the response; request-id and x-dynamo-request-id are not read and log a warning; the generate and SGLang routes echo a body id without using it internally, with their header/body precedence stated.
Observability Architecture (observability-architecture.md): list four correlation keys instead of three, and add a "Request Identifiers" subsection with a mermaid flow from client header and body, through the frontend span and request plane, to the worker span and each engine's own id, and back out in the response. A table states source, functional use, logging use, and what is returned to the caller for each id.
The concept page is the home for the id map; the reference page carries only the rules a caller needs.
Where should the reviewer start?
docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/concepts/observability-architecture.md, the new "Request Identifiers" subsection. Check the diagram and table against lib/llm/src/http/service/openai.rs (get_or_create_request_id) and the worker handle_payload span fields as they stand after #17032.
…n rules
Add a request identifier section to the observability architecture page
with the id flow from client to engine and back, and state the caller-facing
rules on the logging reference: request_id is server generated and keys the
request, x-request-id is correlation only and echoed, request-id and
x-dynamo-request-id are not read. Add the request_id JSONL field.
Relates to ai-dynamo#17010 and ai-dynamo#17032.

The observability documentation distinguishes Dynamo-generated request IDs from caller-provided identifiers. It describes how identifiers appear in logs and traces, propagate through components, and behave in specified routes and responses.

Summary
Identifier model and propagation docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/concepts/observability-architecture.md
The architecture guide describes the correlation keys, identifier sources and uses, and propagation through frontend, workers, and engines. It states that caller-provided identifiers do not change Dynamo’s request keys or routing.
Logging fields and route behavior docs/fern/pages/reference/observability/logging.mdx
The logging reference distinguishes generated request_id from caller-provided x_request_id. It documents ignored headers, body-ID behavior for specified routes, and guidance for searching logs and traces.
This PR only changes documentation, but some statements do not match the current runtime. Operators could be misled about request-ID header handling, SSE annotations and cross-component correlation setup. Hold the PR as a draft until #17032 lands, and add the missing conditions to the docs.

- Around line 126-128: Update the observability architecture page’s request-ID
claims to document that get_or_create_request_id can return a valid
x-dynamo-request-id when no distributed request ID is available, and that
endpoint handlers pass this value to context_from_headers. Revise the claims
that request_id is always server-generated and that x-dynamo-request-id cannot
affect Dynamo’s request key; do not rely on make_inference_request_span as the
primary explanation.
Review comments at @docs/fern/pages/reference/observability/logging.mdx:
- Line 124: Update the `request_id` row in the observability logging reference
to state that streaming chat and completions callers must set
`nvext.annotations` to `["request_id"]` to receive the SSE annotation, and that
it is not emitted by default.
- Line 140: Update the cross-component correlation guidance around “To follow
one request” to state that each participating process must enable JSONL or OTLP
for trace-context propagation, and include the legacy DYN_LOGGING_JSONL=1
switch. Clarify that with readable logging, OTLP disabled, and the legacy switch
unset, the generic request path does not propagate traceparent or x-request-id;
do not imply that the request-plane request-id is also universally lost.

The request_id SSE annotation is emitted only when the request sets
nvext.annotations to ["request_id"]. x-request-id and the W3C trace
headers reach workers only when the trace-context layer is active
(JSONL console format, OTLP export, or legacy DYN_LOGGING_JSONL=1);
the generated request-id header is always set on the request plane.
