perf(frontend): skip per-token text decode for chunks without logprobs - #17349
Decoder::step decoded every generated token a second time, with a single-ID tokenizer.decode, only to fill BackendOutput.tokens. The only readers of those per-token strings are the chat and completions create_logprobs, and both return None unless the chunk carries log_probs. This PR skips that decode for chunks without logprobs, so requests that don't ask for logprobs no longer pay for text that gets discarded.
In on-CPU profiles of the frontend, the single-ID decode under Decoder::step drops from about 0.7 ms/request to zero. About half of that reappears in the incremental DecodeStream decode, which now takes the vocab cache misses the single-ID decode used to absorb. Decoder::step inclusive goes from 2.22 to 1.83 ms/request on one frontend and from 2.08 to 1.74 on the other, a net saving of about 0.35 ms/request, or 2% of frontend user CPU.
Profiled on agentx-cachebust: streaming chat completions with the Qwen3-0.6B tokenizer, 2,048 mocker workers (which return no logprobs) behind two NUMA-pinned frontends, 6,144 concurrency. Base ee0120922e, both arms in one allocation. The profiles are from the first commit (ebb113e9e4); the second commit only removes more per-token work and was not re-profiled.
Details:
In lib/llm/src/backend.rs, the backend unfold passes data.log_probs.is_some() to the new private Decoder::process_token_ids_with_token_text and step_with_token_text. When it is false, they skip decode_token_text and the fallback clone of the decoded text, and set tokens[i] to None. tokens keeps one entry per consumed ID, so truncation at a local stop is unchanged. The public step and process_token_ids behave as before.
process_decoded_text and finish no longer copy the decoded text into StepResult::token, because step always replaced it. That saves one String allocation per token on every request, with or without logprobs. StepResult::ok and ok_split become one constructor, and the StepResult constructors no longer take a token, since only step sets it. The visible and hidden token-stop branches in step now share one exit. A hidden ID only reaches that exit under no_stop_trim, where the old branch already kept the token text.
The gate is per chunk, not per request. That matches the consumers' own log_probs check, and the engine-text fast path, which already decodes per-token text only when log_probs is present.
Added test_token_text_only_decoded_for_chunks_with_logprobs, which fails when the gate is forced on. backend_finalizes_byte_fallback_at_each_terminal_boundary now attaches logprobs to the chunk whose token attribution it checks.
Generated content continues to be decoded when token probability details are unavailable. In that case, individual token text may be omitted unless it can be provided during incremental decoding. When probability details are available, token-level text is retained. This clarifies the difference between the complete generated response and optional per-token information.
Decoder::step decoded every generated token a second time, with a
single-ID tokenizer.decode, to fill BackendOutput.tokens. The only
readers of those per-token strings are the chat and completions
create_logprobs, and both return None unless the chunk carries
log_probs. The backend now passes the chunk's log_probs.is_some() to
the decoder and skips that decode (and its decoded-text fallback
clone) when it is false. tokens keeps one None entry per consumed ID,
so local-stop truncation is unchanged. The public step and
process_token_ids keep their behaviour.

The backend now requests per-token text decoding only for chunks with log probabilities. Content decoding continues for all chunks. Tests cover token text output with and without log probabilities.

Summary
Gate per-token decoding and verify output lib/llm/src/backend.rs
Token processing now passes a flag that controls per-token text decoding. Incremental content decoding remains separate. Tests cover chunks with and without log probabilities, and the byte-fallback test now supplies log probabilities for its initial chunk.
The change remains mergeable, but a discarded per-token allocation limits its performance benefit for chunks without log probabilities.

Explanation
The title "perf(frontend): skip per-token text decode for chunks without logprobs" matches the main change. The backend now skips per-token text decoding in Decoder::step when a chunk has no logprobs. The title is specific, concise, and follows a conventional commit prefix. It states the performance intent and the gating condition.

Explanation
The description is thorough and follows the template. It has an Overview explaining the problem (Decoder::step decodes every token a second time) and the fix (skip the decode for chunks without logprobs). It has Details, a Where should the reviewer start section naming Decoder::step_with_token_text in lib/llm/src/backend.rs, validation commands, and profiling evidence. The Related Issues section uses 'Relates to #15547' rather than the required 'Closes #XXXX' form. The template says every PR must reference the issue it implements, and the check is advisory until release/1.7.0. The author links an issue but does not state a closing reference. This is a minor gap, so the check passes.

Avoid the remaining per-token clone when token text is disabled.
When token_text is false and no stop sequence is configured, process_decoded_text calls StepResult::ok(decoded_text). That method clones the decoded string into token. Line 1063 then replaces token with None. Pass the flag through this path so chunks without log probabilities avoid that per-token allocation.

process_decoded_text and finish copied the decoded text into
StepResult::token, but step always replaced it with the selected token.
Leave it None there. That removes one String allocation per token for
every request, with or without logprobs.
Compute the selected token in one gated block after the incremental
decode, and rename the flag to needs_token_text. Merge StepResult::ok
and ok_split into one constructor. The visible and hidden token-stop
branches in step now share one exit, because a hidden ID only reaches it
under no_stop_trim, where the token text was already kept.

Only Decoder::step sets StepResult::token, so StepResult::ok and
with_stop_trigger always received None. Drop the parameter and set the
token in step's one remaining call site. Also write the selected-token
gate as a plain if, and note in the field doc that the token is None
when per-token text was not requested.
