Summary

python -m dynamo.vllm fails at import on any vLLM newer than 2026-10-08:

File ".../dynamo/vllm/embedding_worker_processes.py", line 32:
    from vllm.v1.engine.utils import get_engine_zmq_addresses, launch_core_engines
ImportError: cannot import name 'get_engine_zmq_addresses' from 'vllm.v1.engine.utils'. Did you mean: 'get_engine_zmq_bind_addresses'?

vllm-project/vllm#54113 renamed the helper and moved frontend ZMQ listener binding into the supervisor. main.py imports embedding_worker_processes unconditionally, so every text-generation worker is affected even though only the embedding multi-process pool (--embedding-worker-processes > 1) uses the symbol. Dynamo pins vLLM 0.30.0 and the DSV4.1 dev release used v0.31.0, both before the rename, so CI did not see it. The native sidecar path is unaffected.

This change resolves get_engine_zmq_addresses and launch_core_engines when the pool launches instead of at import:

  • Text workers never touch the helpers and start on any vLLM.
  • With --embedding-worker-processes > 1 on a vLLM without the old helper, the pool fails with a message naming vllm#54113 and the workaround (--embedding-worker-processes 1). It does not fall back to bind_engine_zmq_listeners(...).addresses: the pool's children still bind those addresses themselves, so handing them supervisor-bound addresses would fail or race. Adopting the inherited listeners the way vLLM's own API-server children do is the follow-up tracked on the ticket.
  • The two names stay module attributes so the existing tests can keep substituting them (monkeypatch.setattr(processes, "get_engine_zmq_addresses", ...)).

Validation

  • Observed on internal Cluster: vllm/vllm-openai:nightly-aarch64-dev-20261012-59e75f4 (vLLM 0.31.1rc1.dev296+gfe4df3df0) with ai-dynamo 1.6.0.dev20261010; every prefill and decode worker died at import in 1:45 and the sidecar path on the same image ran.
  • pre-commit run --files components/src/dynamo/vllm/embedding_worker_processes.py: isort, black, flake8, codespell, ruff pass.
  • tests/test_embedding_worker_processes.py keeps working by construction (it patches the module attributes to non-None values, which the resolver leaves alone); I could not run it on the dev box, which has no vLLM runtime, so please let CI confirm.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Multi-process embedding worker startup now reports a clear error when the installed vLLM does not support it, with guidance to use a single process.

…w vLLM

`dynamo.vllm.main` imports `embedding_worker_processes` unconditionally, and
that module imported `get_engine_zmq_addresses` from `vllm.v1.engine.utils`
at load time. vllm-project/vllm#54113 (2026-10-08) renamed it to
`get_engine_zmq_bind_addresses` and moved listener binding into the
supervisor, so every `python -m dynamo.vllm` worker on a newer vLLM died at
import with `ImportError: cannot import name 'get_engine_zmq_addresses'`,
although only `--embedding-worker-processes > 1` uses the symbol.

Resolve the two helpers when the embedding pool actually launches. Text
workers never touch them and start on any vLLM. On a vLLM without the old
helper the pool itself fails with a message naming the change and the
workaround, instead of handing children addresses the supervisor would
already have bound; adopting inherited listeners is the follow-up.

Walkthrough

The embedding worker now resolves vLLM engine helpers on first use. Parent startup resolves them before requesting engine addresses. If the required address helper is unavailable, startup raises a RuntimeError that explains the multi-process limitation and advises using a process count of 1.

Keep the lazy load without a function-local import.

The optional-dependency exception does not apply. vllm is a required module-level dependency, and this resolver does not provide an import fallback. Keep _resolve_engine_utils() lazy because startup calls it only before the embedding pool uses the helpers, but move the importlib import to module scope.

…allables

Calling the Optional module attributes directly failed mypy with
"None" not callable at both call sites. The resolver now returns the bound
helpers and the pool calls those; the module attributes remain so tests can
still substitute them. Use importlib.import_module at module scope per review.
