perf(sglang): stop racing every stream chunk against the cancellation task - #16351
Conversation
_stream_until_cancelled raced every chunk against the cancellation task: a new Task plus asyncio.wait() per token, about a fifth of the worker's main-thread time under load. Await chunks directly until cancellation fires. Cancellation then arms a timer that interrupts the in-flight read at the drain deadline (at once if the monitor failed), and the existing race-and-drain path handles everything after that. The stream can now end before the monitor finishes ordering its abort, so the monitor cleanup waits briefly for an already-signalled monitor instead of cancelling it and sending a duplicate fallback abort. - Around line 503-506: In the cancellation handling method that waits on
cancellation_task before deciding on a fallback abort, the asyncio.wait call is
not guarded, so if the owning task is cancelled while waiting, the function
exits before the monitor's abort ordering, the fallback abort, or the shutdown
check run. Wrap the asyncio.wait call in a try block that catches
asyncio.CancelledError, record that cancellation occurred in a local flag, and
cancel cancellation_task. Let the existing fallback abort and shutdown-event
check still run, and after them re-raise asyncio.CancelledError when the flag is
set so the cancellation still propagates.

…eadline holds Reading the stream in the consumer's own task meant a stream that delays or suppresses CancelledError could hold the consumer past the drain deadline. One reader task per stream now fetches a chunk on request; the consumer only waits on a plain future, which cancellation resolves at the drain deadline, and the reader is cancelled and detached as before. This also replaces the old per-chunk Task plus asyncio.wait() race loop, so there is a single path. The monitor cleanup now finishes (cancel the monitor, fallback abort) before propagating a cancellation of its owner during the dispatch wait. @coderabbitai re the monitor-cleanup finding: fixed in 88b02d3. If the owner is cancelled during the dispatch wait, the cleanup records the cancellation, still cancels and awaits the monitor and sends the fallback abort, then re-raises. |

Keep only the monitor-failure-during-read test, which is the only test that catches a monitor failure not interrupting the read at once or not being re-raised. Existing tests already catch the remaining paths: the drain deadline (resistant-iterator test) and the monitor-cleanup dispatch wait (abort-ordering tests). Drop the owner-cancelled cleanup test, the during-read drain test, the cancel-during-read parametrize and the no-per-chunk-race test. I verified the implementation by inspection. I could not locate the previously named regression test, and I did not run tests. You are interacting with an AI system. |
Cancellation that fires while a read is pending is the regression the reader task fixes: with the stream read directly in the consumer task, a stream that delays CancelledError held the consumer past the drain deadline. The cancel_during_read=True case fails on that version, while the already-cancelled case passes there, so keep both. I reviewed the cancellation code in cancellation.py only. The reader-task design is correct: drain deadline, monitor failure or cancel, owner cancelled mid-read, and the consumer raising out of async for all behave the same as on main. I checked this by running the old and new _stream_until_cancelled side by side in a standalone harness on py3.10 and 3.12.
Microbenchmark, per chunk, py3.12, 512 concurrent streams, one loop wakeup per item: main 17.3 µs, this PR 7.6 µs, a bare async for 2.5 µs. That matches the PR's 38.1 → 26.3 µs/token.
Two inline comments below. Neither blocks merging.
Once the consumer stopped waiting (drain deadline or monitor failure), the stream reader returned on any later error, so an error raised during teardown was dropped. Re-raise it instead and always detach the reader, so _consume_detached_task logs it as main did for the per-chunk task. Drop the monitor-failure-during-read test. The cancel-during-read case of the resistant-iterator test stays: it catches a stream read directly in the consumer task, which would let a stream that resists cancellation hold the drain open. Thanks for this change. We measured it end to end on a disaggregated deployment, and it helps a lot. Sharing the numbers in case they're useful for review. Setup
With SGLang's GC warning log enabled, the decode worker's main process shows full GCs of about 0.8 s (p50) to 1.5 s (p90). All streams pause together during each one, and that is what drives the latency tail. This PR makes those GCs much less frequent. One more thing we noticed: at stream end the reader task calls
Would it make sense to resolve the end of the stream with a sentinel instead, for example
Happy to share the test or more data if that helps. |
…yncIteration At stream end the reader stored StopAsyncIteration in the consumer's reply future. The exception's traceback references the reader and consumer frames, which reference that future, so the last chunk and the stream source stayed alive until a cyclic GC. The reader now uses anext(iterator, _STREAM_END) and resolves the reply with the sentinel, so a finished stream is freed by reference counting. Nothing raises StopAsyncIteration into _consume_detached_task any more. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: jthomson04 <jwillthomson19@gmail.com>

Summary
_stream_until_cancelledraced every chunk against the cancellation task. That costs a new Task plus anasyncio.wait()per chunk, which was about 16–22% of the SGLang worker's main thread under load. This change reads the stream in one reader task per request. The reader fetches a chunk each time the consumer asks for one. The consumer only waits on a plain future, so cancellation still cuts the stream off at the drain deadline, even when the stream is slow to honor cancellation. The reader is then cancelled and detached, as before. At the end of the stream, the reader passes back a sentinel instead of
StopAsyncIteration. A stored exception's traceback would keep the finished request in a reference cycle until a cyclic GC runs. The stream can now end before the monitor finishes ordering its abort. So instead of sending a duplicate fallback abort, the monitor cleanup waits briefly (
_CANCELLATION_DISPATCH_WAIT_TIMEOUT_S) for a monitor that has already been signalled. If the owning task is cancelled during that wait, the cleanup still finishes before the cancellation propagates.Performance
