fix(common-http): exempt the egress proxy only on proxy connections - #15780
dmitry-tokarev-nv wants to merge 13 commits into
Conversation
The connect-time resolver exempted a configured proxy by host name on every connection, also on connections that did not go through the proxy. Fetches that a trusted proxy carries now run on their own session. Only the resolver of that session exempts the proxy, and only at the proxy's own host and port. Direct fetches run on a session whose resolver exempts nothing. aiohttp caches DNS answers per connector, keyed by host and port, so the two kinds of fetch do not share a connector. The proxy gate now asks first whether a proxy applies to the URL, and then reads DYN_MM_TRUST_EGRESS_PROXY. It returns the answer, and the client uses it to pick the session. Up to three pools can now exist, and the help text of --http-max-connections says so. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Tokarev <dtokarev@nvidia.com>
The shared HTTP client raises HttpConfigurationError for a fetch through an untrusted egress proxy. The error has no status, so the generic handler of the TensorRT-LLM video path wrapped it in HttpStatusError(400). A valid video request then failed as a client error. The video path now re-raises HttpConfigurationError before the generic handler, as the shared image, audio and video loaders do. The bindings map an exception without a status to an internal error, not to a 400. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Tokarev <dtokarev@nvidia.com>
The sweep fetches from its own media server on localhost. The shared HTTP client refuses private addresses unless DYN_MM_ALLOW_INTERNAL=1, and a per-request policy cannot loosen that. So every request of the sweep failed, and the sweep still exited 0. If DYN_MM_ALLOW_INTERNAL is not set, the sweep now sets it to 1. If every request of a pair of request rate and server delay fails, the sweep exits 1 and names the pair. …proxy-connections Resolve the conflict in components/src/dynamo/common/http/aiohttp_client.py by keeping both sides in _fetch_simple and _fetch_body_or_redirect: the session choice by proxy from this branch, and the read timeout from #14373. WalkthroughThe HTTP client now selects separate direct and trusted-proxy sessions and applies proxy exemptions to exact host-and-port endpoints. Video loading preserves HTTP configuration errors. The multimodal HTTP sweep sets an internal-address default when unset and reports failure when a measured grid pair has no successful requests. ChangesTrusted Proxy HTTP Policy

Priority: ⬇️ Low Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to The change correctly limits proxy exemptions to proxy connections. However, a redirect followed through the trusted-proxy session can still make a direct connection to the private proxy endpoint. Known exposure is narrow, because the only repository fetch without a URL policy is the sweep, which already allows internal addresses. Resolve the redirect handling and make the new proxy tests independent of the runner's environment before merging. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

_fetch_simpleselects the trusted-proxy session once before callingsession.get(..., allow_redirects=True). aiohttp re-evaluates environment proxy settings on each redirect, so a request that starts through the trusted proxy can redirect to the proxy host covered byNO_PROXY; that redirected hop goes direct but still uses the resolver whose(proxy_host, proxy_port)exemption was enabled for proxy dialing, bypassing the direct-fetch private-address check. Handle redirects explicitly on this path or otherwise reselect the connector for each redirected URL. - Original discussion: Verified still present:
_fetch_simpleselects the trusted-proxy session once before callingsession.get(..., allow_redirects=True). aiohttp re-evaluates proxy/NO_PROXY settings for redirected URLs while retaining the same session and connector, so a redirect from a proxied origin to the configured proxy host covered by NO_PROXY can make a direct connection through the resolver that exempts the proxy endpoint. The correction remains to disable automatic redirects on this path and choose the session after evaluating each redirect URL. - Original discussion: Verified still present:
_fetch_simpleselects the trusted-proxy session only for the initial URL and then lets aiohttp follow redirects internally. aiohttp re-checks proxy/NO_PROXY for each redirect while reusing the same connector, so a redirect to the configured proxy host covered by NO_PROXY can be dialed directly through the resolver that exempts that private proxy endpoint. Disable automatic redirects on this path and reselect the session for each hop. - Original discussion: Verified still present: the
test_proxy_connections.pyautouse fixture clears onlyDYN_MM_*variables and does not clear inherited lowercase proxy variables. Because the tests then set only uppercase proxy variables, an inherited lowercasehttp_proxy/https_proxy/all_proxyorno_proxycan change which proxy aiohttp sees and make these connection tests exercise the runner environment instead of the loopback proxy setup.
A fetch without a URL policy let aiohttp follow redirects on the session of the first hop. If that hop went through a trusted proxy and a redirect named the proxy's own host and port, NO_PROXY sent the next hop direct. The resolver of the proxied session then exempted that direct connection. The client now follows these redirects itself. Each hop runs the proxy gate and picks its own session, as the policy path already does. So a redirect from a direct origin to a URL that a trusted proxy carries now goes through the proxy. One time budget covers all hops. The limit stays at 10 redirects, and an overflow raises the same error as before. The sweep exit-status test is now marked unit. The loopback sweep test is marked integration, with a timeout of 30 seconds, as .ai/pytest-guidelines.md asks. The proxy connection tests get the same timeout, because they open real connections on loopback. The loopback sweep test now starts its server after the rest of its setup, so a failed setup step cannot leave the server running. Two stub classes lose docstrings that only repeated their code. Before the client split its sessions by proxy, one session served both the direct and the proxied hops of a connect policy. So a redirect between them kept its cookies. Each split session got its own cookie jar, and such a redirect lost them. The direct and the proxied session of a connect policy now share one jar. The permissive pool keeps its own jar, as before. The comment in sweep.main() now gives only the reason that the variable is set there. The comment in the gate test says only why its URL is http. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Tokarev <dtokarev@nvidia.com>
The http case of test_a_direct_fetch_to_the_proxy_host_is_filtered repeated the https case on another scheme. The https case still covers a port other than the proxy's, and the http-proxy-port case still covers the http scheme. Both of them fail on the code before this pull request, as the http case did. None of the 15 recorded mutations made the http case fail. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Tokarev <dtokarev@nvidia.com>
A fetch without a URL policy now follows its redirects itself. aiohttp checked each redirect target first, but the loop did not. So the loop differed from aiohttp in these ways: - A Location that yarl cannot parse raised a raw ValueError. - A redirect to a ws:// URL was followed as an HTTP request. - A target without a host reached the proxy gate. With a proxy set, the fetch raised HttpConfigurationError. - A redirect in the obsolete URI header was not followed. The fetch returned the empty body of the redirect. The loop now takes the URI header and checks each target as aiohttp 3.14.4 does. It raises the same aiohttp errors, so the fetch reports HttpConnectionError again. A target such as http:path resolves against the current URL, as aiohttp 3.14.4 and browsers do. aiohttp 3.14.3 refused it. One difference remains. aiohttp sent the credentials of a URL again after a redirect to the same origin, and the loop does not. A fetch with a URL policy did not send them again on main either, and it does not change here. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Tokarev <dtokarev@nvidia.com>
The proxy gate now looks up the proxy before it reads the trusted-proxy opt-in. So with DYN_MM_TRUST_EGRESS_PROXY=1, a fetch without a URL policy raised a raw ValueError for a URL that yarl cannot parse, such as http://[::1. On main, the gate returned before it parsed the URL. aiohttp then refused the URL with InvalidUrlClientError, and the fetch reported HttpConnectionError. The gate now returns False for such a URL, because no proxy carries it. aiohttp refuses it as before, so the fetch reports HttpConnectionError. A strict deployment without the opt-in now reports the same error. On main, it raised the raw ValueError. This no-proxy control only rechecks the generic direct-fetch private-address block: with no configured proxy, the proxy hostname is just an ordinary host resolving to loopback. The retained test_a_direct_fetch_to_the_proxy_host_is_filtered[http-proxy-port] exercises the same direct AiohttpClient/connect-time resolver boundary while also covering the PR-specific case that the configured proxy host and port receive no exemption on a direct connection; resolver unit tests retain the generic blocked-address contract.

Thanks. I keep this test as the control for the proxy's host name. With no proxy setting, a direct fetch to that name is blocked. [http-proxy-port] adds the proxy setting and gets the same result. So the pair shows that the setting alone does not open the name to a direct fetch.

This positive trusted-proxy case is already exercised by the retained test_a_cached_proxy_answer_is_not_reused_for_a_direct_fetch: that test performs the same trusted proxied fetch to http://origin.test/x and asserts the proxy received the same absolute-URI request before checking the cache boundary. Keeping only the cached-answer test still protects the supported behavior that a trusted private proxy can carry the fetch, while also covering the PR-specific direct-fetch separation.

A fetch without a URL policy follows its redirects itself. It built the next hop from the URL of the response, from which aiohttp strips the credentials. So a URL such as http://user:pass@host/start that redirected to /next sent no Authorization header on the second hop. When aiohttp followed the redirects, it sent the same credentials again after a redirect to the same origin, and dropped them after a redirect to another origin. The loop now does the same. It takes the credentials from the URL that the previous hop requested. It adds them to the next URL only when that URL has the same origin and no credentials of its own. A fetch with a URL policy does not change. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Tokarev <dtokarev@nvidia.com>

Summary
This follow-up to #14474 answers its two open review threads, and it fixes the HTTP sweep benchmark.
HttpConfigurationErrorinHttpStatusError(400), so a valid video request through an untrusted proxy failed as a client error. The path now re-raises the error before that handler, as the shared image, audio and video loaders do.localhost. The client refuses private addresses unlessDYN_MM_ALLOW_INTERNAL=1, and a per-request policy cannot loosen that (AiohttpClient._connect_allows_private). Every request failed, and the sweep still exited 0. If the variable is not set, the sweep now sets it to 1. If every request of a pair fails, the sweep exits 1 and names the pair. The two kinds of fetch do not share a connector. aiohttp caches DNS answers per connector, keyed by
(host, port)(TCPConnector._resolve_hostin aiohttp 3.14.3 and 3.14.4).Two behavior changes follow. The client can keep up to three connection pools: permissive, strict and direct, and strict through a trusted proxy. The help text of
--http-max-connectionssays so. Also, a fetch without a URL policy now follows redirects in the client instead of in aiohttp. Each hop runs the proxy gate and picks its own session, as on the policy path. So a redirect into a URL that a proxy carries needsDYN_MM_TRUST_EGRESS_PROXY=1, like a first hop. Onmain, that hop went through the proxy without the check. One time budget still covers the whole request, the limit stays at 10 redirects, and an overflow raises the same error as onmain. Each redirect target is checked as aiohttp 3.14.4 checks it, and the obsoleteURIheader still redirects. So a target that aiohttp refuses raises the same error as onmain. aiohttp 3.14.3 also refused a target such ashttp:path, which aiohttp 3.14.4 and the client resolve against the current URL. Like aiohttp, the client sends the credentials of a URL again after a redirect to the same origin, and drops them after a redirect to another origin. A fetch with a URL policy did not send them again onmain, and it does not change. A first URL that does not parse now fails withHttpConnectionErroron a fetch without a URL policy, with or without the trusted-proxy opt-in. Onmain, it did so only with the opt-in, and it raisedValueErrorwithout it. In this repository, only the sweep fetches without a policy, and the sweep now setsDYN_MM_ALLOW_INTERNAL=1.Validation
