Overview:

Summary

Adds a Qwen3-ASR speech recognition example for the vLLM backend. Clients send speech as an audio_url content part to /v1/chat/completions, and the model replies with language <Language><asr_text><transcript>. The example includes a local launcher, a DynamoGraphDeployment manifest, and a Speech Recognition (ASR) section in the vLLM multimodal guide that also covers streaming transcription over /v1/realtime.

Details:

  • examples/backends/vllm/launch/agg_asr.sh (new): runs the frontend with the vLLM chat processor (--dyn-chat-processor vllm) and a --enable-multimodal worker serving Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B by default. The original Qwen3-ASR checkpoints ship vocab.json and merges.txt but no tokenizer.json, which the Rust preprocessor needs. With DYN_CHAT_PROCESSOR=dynamo and --model Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B-hf, it serves the Transformers-format checkpoint, which ships a tokenizer.json, behind the Rust frontend. Other arguments pass through to the worker.
  • examples/backends/vllm/deploy/agg_asr.yaml (new): the same frontend and worker as a DGD. Separate pods do not share /dev/shm, so the default shared-memory handoff of processed audio never reaches the worker, which then transcribes the prompt without audio (language None<asr_text>). The manifest sets DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1 on the frontend so the worker loads the audio itself.
  • vLLM multimodal guide: adds agg_asr.sh to the launcher table and a Speech Recognition (ASR) section covering the request and response format, the Kubernetes deployment, and streaming transcription. It also notes that shm transfer needs a shared /dev/shm, and that vLLM resamples audio through PyAV, which the runtime images do not ship: audio at a rate other than the model's 16 kHz fails with HTTP 500 until PyAV is installed.
  • Additional Media Decoders: lists off-rate audio on vLLM as a reason to install a decoder, and notes that a frontend running --dyn-chat-processor vllm also loads and resamples media, so it needs the decoder too.
  • vLLM deploy README: adds entry 9 for agg_asr.yaml.
  • .lycheeignore: ignores the guide's blob/main link to agg_asr.yaml, which 404s until this PR merges. Remove the entry after merge, as with the other same-PR entries.

Rebased onto main after #15481, which made agg_realtime_transcription.sh require an explicit --hf-overrides and dropped model-name-based architecture selection. This PR no longer changes that script; the guide's streaming transcription command passes --hf-overrides '{"architectures":["Qwen3ASRRealtimeGeneration"]}' instead.

Validation

  • python3 docs/fern/scripts/docs_lint.py: passed, 0 errors. The 8 warnings are on pages this PR does not touch.
  • fern check in docs/fern, after generating the API reference pages as CI does: 0 errors. The 3 warnings are on pages this PR does not touch.
  • fern docs broken-links: no broken links in changed pages. The only error is the existing link in pages/recipes/model-recipes/deepseek-v4-pro-0813.mdx.
  • pre-commit run --files <changed files>: all hooks passed (pytest-marker-report under Python 3.14).
  • bash -n examples/backends/vllm/launch/agg_asr.sh: passed.
  • Launcher smoke tests with a stub python that records its arguments (bash 5.3):
    • No arguments: frontend gets --dyn-chat-processor vllm; worker gets --enable-multimodal --model Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B.
    • --model Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-0.6B --max-model-len 8192: both reach the worker.
    • DYN_CHAT_PROCESSOR=dynamo with --model Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B-hf: frontend gets --dyn-chat-processor dynamo.
    • --help: exits 0.
  • The guide's streaming command passes agg_realtime_transcription.sh argument validation and forwards the Qwen3ASRRealtimeGeneration override to the worker (stubbed). The same command without --hf-overrides exits 2.
  • python3 .github/codeowners/who_owns.py --codeowners CODEOWNERS --changed: every changed file has owners.

Not run on this base: GPU end-to-end serving with agg_asr.sh or agg_asr.yaml. The rebase picked up the vLLM 0.30.0 upgrade (#15182).

Where should the reviewer start?

  • examples/backends/vllm/deploy/agg_asr.yaml: DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1 for the cross-pod audio handoff.
  • examples/backends/vllm/launch/agg_asr.sh.
  • The Speech Recognition (ASR) section in docs/fern/pages/developer-guide/knowledge-base/modular-components/backends/vllm/multimodal.md.

agg_realtime_transcription.sh requires an explicit --hf-overrides argument and no longer selects an architecture from the model name (ai-dynamo#15481), so the streaming transcription command passes Qwen3ASRRealtimeGeneration itself.

Previously reported defects still present:

  • Original discussion: Still present: both new files use SPDX copyright year 2026 instead of the requested 2025-2026 range.
  • Original discussion: Still present: the Kubernetes guidance says DYNAMO_MM_TRANSFER=nixl also works across pods, but the manifest sets DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1; the frontend checks that disable flag before selecting the transfer sender. Readers must be told to remove or unset DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM when enabling NIXL, otherwise the worker still reloads and processes the audio instead of using NIXL-transferred processed inputs.
  • Original discussion: Still present: the Kubernetes guidance says DYNAMO_MM_TRANSFER=nixl also works across pods, but the provided manifest sets DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1 on the frontend. The vLLM frontend checks that disable flag before selecting a transfer sender, so adding DYNAMO_MM_TRANSFER=nixl alone would still leave processed-input transfer disabled.
  • Original discussion: Still present: the Kubernetes guidance says DYNAMO_MM_TRANSFER=nixl works across pods, but it does not tell readers to remove or unset the existing DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1 from the manifest so the frontend can actually select NIXL transfer.
  • Original discussion: Still present: the Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B-hf launch example is followed by a request whose model field remains Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B, so readers using the -hf checkpoint would send a request for the wrong model name.
  • Original discussion: Still present: the docs show starting the Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B-hf checkpoint, but the immediately following chat-completions request still uses "model": "Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B". Since the vLLM worker registers the served model from --model when no alias is provided, readers following the -hf path will send the request to a model name that is not the one being served.
  • Original discussion: Still present: the documentation shows launching Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B-hf with the default Rust frontend, but the immediately following request still uses "model": "Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B". A reader who copies that request after selecting the -hf checkpoint will send a model name that does not match the served worker model; the request example needs to tell them to use Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B-hf for that command.
  • Original discussion: The ASR guide still shows a request model of Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B immediately after the alternative Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B-hf launch command. Requests copied after launching the -hf checkpoint will name a model the worker did not register, so the doc needs to tell users to change the request model to the served -hf checkpoint.
  • Original discussion: The Kubernetes guidance still says DYNAMO_MM_TRANSFER=nixl works while the manifest it references sets DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1. The frontend checks the disable flag before selecting any transfer sender, so users enabling NIXL must also remove or unset DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1.

✅ Dynamo PR CI passed — run 37845920223 (attempt 1) on 7be1663354

Gate checks: ✅ backend-status-check · ✅ deploy-status-check · ✅ dynamo-status-check

Posted automatically by Devin for run 37845920223. Updated on every full-CI run of this PR.

The transcription request names Qwen/Qwen3-ASR-1.7B, so readers who serve
another checkpoint must change its model field. The agg_asr.yaml manifest sets
DYNAMO_DISABLE_NIXL_MM=1, which the frontend checks before DYNAMO_MM_TRANSFER,
so enabling NIXL transfer requires removing that flag.

Also use the 2025-2026 SPDX copyright range required for new example files and
drop a comment in agg_asr.sh that repeated the help text.

Resolve the .lycheeignore conflict as the union of both sides: keep the
glm-5.3 and gpu-sharing entries from main and append this branch's

@Jont828 I think agg_asr.sh and examples/backends/vllm/launch/agg_realtime_transcription.sh are now both two ways of running ASR models like Qwen3-ASR, with the latter focused on /v1/realtime serving. Do you think it would make sense to combine them and possible remove the agg_realtime_transcription.sh and just have a flag that would specify if realtime or chat/completions?
Or at least rename agg_realtime_transcription.sh to agg_asr_realtime.sh to keep the consistent naming convention.
