perf: freeze CPython GC heap in frontend and vLLM worker processes - #15378

Conversation
CPython's full (gen2) collection walks every tracked object under the GIL,
so its pause scales with heap size and its frequency with allocation rate.
Both the dynamo.frontend process (with --dyn-chat-processor vllm|sglang) and
the dynamo.vllm worker parent hold ~1M long-lived objects (engine imports,
tokenizer, parser registries, config), and under load a gen2 pass fires
every few seconds and stalls the main thread while every in-flight request
waits.
Measured on one A100 serving a 4B embedding model (open-loop ladder, c16
client, per-thread schedstat sampling in both pods):
* stock: worker parent main thread solo at 100% for 1.1-1.7 s, EngineCore
idle; 830 errors / p99 888 ms at 320 RPS; ceiling 354 RPS.
* worker heap frozen: worker stalls gone; 66 errors / p99 133 ms at 320
RPS; ceiling 390 RPS (+10%). 12/12 remaining >300 ms stalls overlap a
dynamo.frontend main-thread solo window (208-735 ms), quasi-periodic
with period shrinking 40 s -> 17 s as load rises 280 -> 420 RPS, which
is the gen2 25%-growth trigger signature.
vLLM already applies the same fix (gc.collect(); gc.freeze()) in its
API-server lifespan, EngineCore.__init__ and each GPU worker after warmup;
none of those run in Dynamo's own processes.
Changes:
* dynamo.common.utils.gc_freeze: freeze_gc_heap() (collect every
generation, then freeze, log gc.get_freeze_count()) and an opt-in
gc.callbacks pause logger so the freeze can be verified from the
process log rather than inferred from CPU samples.
* frontend: --dyn-freeze-gc-heap / DYN_FREEZE_GC_HEAP (default on).
Freezes after startup and again at the end of each chat_engine_factory
(vllm and sglang), including every --dyn-preprocess-workers process.
--dyn-gc-pause-log-ms / DYN_GC_PAUSE_LOG_MS (default 0, off).
* vllm worker: --freeze-gc-heap / DYN_VLLM_FREEZE_GC_HEAP (default on),
freezing once the engine is up, before register_model() so the one
blocking collect never overlaps traffic. --gc-pause-log-ms /
DYN_VLLM_GC_PAUSE_LOG_MS (default 0, off). Dynamo worker process only;
EngineCore and GPU workers are separate interpreters that vLLM already
freezes.
Distinct from dynamo.vllm.gc_policy, which is the FPM self-benchmark's
periodic-freeze loop and stays off unless DYN_FPM_GC_POLICY is set.
Trade-off: objects alive at freeze time that later die are never
reclaimed. The heap this targets lives for the process lifetime, so the
cost is ~0; --no-dyn-freeze-gc-heap / --no-freeze-gc-heap restore default
CPython behaviour.
Tests: pure-stdlib unit tests for gc_freeze (collect-before-freeze proven
via weakref, repeat-freeze extends the permanent generation, pause-logger
threshold and idempotent install), plus flag/env/validation tests for
both arg surfaces.

The generation-0, 5 ms callback does not protect a distinct observable contract: it is only asserted through the final log count, and the retained generation-2, 49 ms callback already proves sub-threshold pauses are suppressed. Keeping both sub-threshold cases cannot distinguish a GC-generation regression because neither branch inspects generation-specific output.
🤖 AI Fix
Remove the generation=0, pause_ms=5.0 _run call from test_logs_only_at_or_above_threshold.

The bogus phase callback covers behavior CPython gc.callbacks do not produce; the supported stop-without-start path remains protected by the preceding stop callback, which still verifies unmatched stops are ignored without logging.
🤖 AI Fix
Delete the bogus-phase pause_logger call from test_stop_without_start_is_ignored.

These workload-specific A100 results are benchmark history rather than a lasting constraint on the GC helper. The surrounding docstring already preserves the useful explanation of the pause mechanism and why freezing the static heap helps.

This factory runs from the dynamic discovery watcher after the HTTP service has started accepting requests. Calling the synchronous collect+freeze here therefore blocks the frontend event loop whenever a model is added or replaced, producing the same multi-hundred-ms-to-seconds request stall this change is meant to avoid. Restrict heap freezing to a pre-serving initialization phase, or otherwise ensure this path cannot run while the frontend is serving; apply the same correction to the SGLang factory.
🤖 AI Fix
Remove or gate per-model collect-and-freeze calls so they execute only before request admission, including the analogous SGLang chat-engine factory call.

chat_engine_factory is invoked by the dynamic ModelWatcher whenever a model group is discovered or replaced, including after the frontend is already serving other models. This call synchronously runs gc.collect() under the GIL, so the default-enabled per-model freeze stalls the frontend event loop and in-flight requests during a later registration; the matching SGLang factory has the same issue. Keep this operation on a lifecycle path that is guaranteed quiescent rather than model discovery.
🤖 AI Fix
Remove the per-model freeze calls from both dynamic chat-engine factories and retain freezing only on a quiescent startup lifecycle path.
Overview:
dynamo.frontend(with--dyn-chat-processor vllm|sglang) and thedynamo.vllmworker parent each hold ~0.8–0.9M long-lived Python objects (engine imports, tokenizer, parser registries, config).
