build(sglang): floor diffusers past the sglang-pinned 0.37.0 - #14920
dagil-nvidia wants to merge 3 commits into
Conversation
sglang[diffusion]==0.5.19 pins diffusers==0.37.0 exactly, so the resolver cannot lift it and the upstream lmsysorg/sglang image bundles that release. requirements.sglang.txt installs --force-reinstall --no-deps, which is the only place in the build where that pin can be overlaid. diffusers 0.38.0 raises its own floor from safetensors>=0.3.1 to safetensors>=0.8.0. --no-deps will not pull that in, so the safetensors floor is declared alongside it rather than left implicit. Both are bounded below the next major, matching the pillow entry above them. Signed-off-by: Dan Gil <dagil@nvidia.com>

diffusers 0.40.0 raises its own floor to huggingface-hub>=1.23.0. This file installs with --force-reinstall --no-deps, so pip will neither pull hub along nor validate that the base image already satisfies the new floor. Whether hub 1.23.0 is present in the SGLang image is not knowable from this repo either: container/compliance/base_sboms holds the CUDA base's SBOM, not the sglang image's, and sglang 0.5.19 only floors hub at 1.5.0 (transitively through transformers==5.12.1). Cap at the last diffusers release whose hub floor (>=0.34.0 on 0.39.0) is unambiguously satisfied by any realistic upstream image; drop the cap once hub 1.23.0 is verified present. Reviewed at head 60a4611050d5c799d9d954497e1d8f30c02ced2c. Intent: move diffusers in the SGLang runtime image above the 0.37.0 that sglang[diffusion]==0.5.19 pins exactly. I verified the change by running it, not by reading it.
The floor wins, and here is the mechanism
The build step is pip install --break-system-packages --force-reinstall --no-deps --requirement /tmp/requirements.sglang.txt in container/templates/sglang_runtime.Dockerfile:191. --no-deps means pip never reads the SGLang pin, so there is no resolution for the floor to lose. A real joint resolution does fail. On linux x86_64 and Python 3.12:
$ uv pip compile both.in --python-platform x86_64-manylinux_2_34 --python-version 3.12
× No solution found when resolving dependencies:
╰─▶ Because sglang[diffusion]==0.5.19 depends on diffusers==0.37.0 and you
require sglang[diffusion]==0.5.19, we can conclude that you require
diffusers==0.37.0.
And because you require diffusers>=0.38.0,<0.40, we can conclude that
your requirements are unsatisfiable.
That confirms the claim in the description that a floor in pyproject.toml would make the sglang[diffusion] extra unresolvable. The overlay file is the right place. The step also runs after the base image in every build, so the floor keeps winning across an SGLang bump. See the inline comment for the one case where that is not what you want.
Resolved version, before and after
I ran this inside the SGLang runtime test image that CI built at the merge base, commit 5e21f9c6181ad42ba4fb8a3e20bf7c2b62631724, on linux/amd64.
Before, measured in that image:
diffusers 0.37.0
safetensors 0.8.0
huggingface-hub 1.30.0
transformers 5.12.1
sglang 0.5.19
After, resolved by pip inside the same image:
Collecting diffusers<0.40,>=0.38.0
Downloading diffusers-0.39.0-py3-none-any.whl.metadata (20 kB)
Collecting safetensors<1,>=0.8.0
Downloading safetensors-0.8.0-cp310-abi3-manylinux_2_17_x86_64.manylinux2014_x86_64.whl.metadata (4.2 kB)
Would install diffusers-0.39.0 safetensors-0.8.0
The real install gives diffusers 0.39.0, import diffusers works, from diffusers import DiffusionPipeline, FluxPipeline works, and pip check reports no complaint about diffusers, safetensors or huggingface-hub. The change is not inert. It moves 0.37.0 to 0.39.0.
I also ran every diffusers import that SGLang 0.5.19 makes across its tree, 72 targets, inside that image. All 72 resolve on 0.37.0 and on 0.39.0. That is import level only. I did not run a diffusion request.
safetensors is inert in this image. The image already carries 0.8.0, so the entry resolves 0.8.0 to 0.8.0. The entry is still correct as a guard, because --no-deps will not pull it.
Index caveat, unverified. PIP_INDEX_URL is empty inside the image, and the SGLang install step mounts no pip-index-url secret, so I resolved against public PyPI. I could not check the internal mirror that continuous integration uses.
The two stated reasons
diffusers 0.40.0. Correct. The published metadata gives the exact string huggingface-hub<2.0,>=1.23.0. For comparison, 0.39.0 gives huggingface-hub<2.0,>=0.34.0 and 0.38.0 gives safetensors>=0.8.0-rc.0.
TensorRT-LLM rc26. The cap exists, but it landed earlier than stated. requirements.txt in NVIDIA/TensorRT-LLM carries diffusers>=0.39.0,<0.40 at both v1.3.0rc25 and v1.3.0rc26, so rc25 already had it. Two differences matter. TensorRT-LLM floors at 0.39.0, not 0.38.0. Its recorded reason for the ceiling is click>=8.4.2 reached through huggingface-hub>=1.23.0, and the SGLang image already carries click 8.5.0.
Where else the tree constrains diffusers
Only here. I searched the whole tree. container/deps/requirements.sglang.txt holds the only explicit version constraint. pyproject.toml constrains it only through sglang[diffusion]==0.5.19, and examples/diffusers/Dockerfile installs fastvideo==0.2.0 with no diffusers constraint. There is nothing to drift.
Compatibility with #14925
Semantically compatible. #14925 changes only the PyNvVideoCodec entry in this file, and it adds a <3 ceiling in the same bounded style. Applying both gives a coherent requirement set.
Findings
P2 is inline on container/deps/requirements.sglang.txt.
P3. The description no longer matches the diff. The Summary section still reads "add diffusers>=0.38.0,<1 and safetensors>=0.8.0,<1". The head is diffusers>=0.38.0,<0.40. The Validation section does not cover the cap at all. One more point in that section: it says 0.38.0 raises its floor to safetensors>=0.8.0. The published metadata for 0.38.0 says safetensors>=0.8.0-rc.0. The >=0.8.0 string arrives in 0.39.0, which is what the range resolves to, so the entry is right and only the sentence is off.
Recorded, not findings
Continuous integration did not build the SGLang image on this pull request. All five sglang-runtime jobs skipped. The cause is pre-existing and outside this diff: .github/filters.yaml:371 lists container/deps/sglang/** twice and never lists container/deps/requirements.sglang.txt, while the trtllm filter does list container/deps/requirements.trtllm.txt. A change to this file can therefore never trigger the SGLang image build. That belongs in its own issue. It is the reason I ran the install in the image myself instead of reading a green check.
The request to delete the second safetensors comment is a matter of taste. I read # Required by the diffusers floor above; see the note there. as a useful cross-reference, because the two entries sit 22 lines apart. I have no finding there.

Approved at 60a4611050d5c799d9d954497e1d8f30c02ced2c. Zero P0, zero P1, one P2 and one P3, so the bar is met. I did not author any commit on this pull request.
What I verified by running it, inside the SGLang runtime test image built at the merge base on linux/amd64: diffusers moves 0.37.0 to 0.39.0, safetensors stays 0.8.0, import diffusers and from diffusers import DiffusionPipeline, FluxPipeline work, pip check reports no conflict on those packages, and all 72 diffusers import targets in the SGLang 0.5.19 tree resolve. The overlay wins because the install is --force-reinstall --no-deps, and a real joint resolution of sglang[diffusion]==0.5.19 with this floor is unsatisfiable, which is why the overlay file is the right place.
Remaining, both non-blocking. P2: the <0.40 cap records a reason the image contradicts, because the image carries huggingface-hub 1.30.0 and click 8.5.0, and a ceiling under --force-reinstall is a downgrade instruction. P3: the description still says <1 and does not cover the cap.
Deferred on purpose. I resolved against public PyPI, not the internal mirror, so the mirror is unverified. I tested imports, not a diffusion request. The SGLang image build never ran on this pull request because .github/filters.yaml does not list this path, which is pre-existing and belongs in its own issue.
The note claimed the cap was needed because diffusers 0.40.0 floors huggingface-hub>=1.23.0 and that the hub version in the SGLang image was not knowable from this repo. Both halves were wrong. The number behind that claim came from the TensorRT-LLM release SBOM, which describes nvcr.io/nvidia/tensorrt-llm/release and carries hub 1.14.0, not the SGLang runtime image. Measuring the SGLang runtime image directly gives hub 1.30.0, which already satisfies the 0.40.0 floor. The cap itself stays. No diffusion request has been exercised on 0.40.0, so the ceiling remains a precaution, and that is now what the note says. Also record that under --force-reinstall a ceiling acts as a downgrade instruction, so this line will silently roll back a future SGLang release that bundles 0.40.0 or newer. Comment only. The requirement lines are unchanged. Signed-off-by: Dan Gil <dagil@nvidia.com>

Re-approving at ad545a51cfe54d13946a5f7a53ec71b24aac1686.
The push since my last approval is a fast-forward: 60a4611050 is still an ancestor of the head, and the merge base with main is 5e21f9c6181ad42ba4fb8a3e20bf7c2b62631724 before and after. The one new commit changes comment text only. The two requirement lines are byte-identical to the approved commit.
I re-measured the floor at the live head rather than carrying the earlier result forward.
What I verified at the live head
| Question | Result |
|---|---|
| Floor or pin | Floor with a ceiling, diffusers>=0.38.0,<0.40 and safetensors>=0.8.0,<1 |
| What the resolver picks | diffusers 0.39.0, safetensors 0.8.0, by pip dry run inside the merge-base SGLang runtime test image |
| What SGLang pins | sglang 0.5.19 requires diffusers==0.37.0 under the diffusion extra, read from the installed metadata in that image |
| What happens with both constraints | The install runs --force-reinstall --no-deps, so pip never re-resolves the SGLang solution. It overwrites 0.37.0 with 0.39.0 and reports no conflict |
| Fetchable | diffusers-0.39.0-py3-none-any.whl and safetensors-0.8.0-cp310-abi3-manylinux_2_17_x86_64.manylinux2014_x86_64.whl, both present and not yanked. An aarch64 safetensors wheel exists too |
| Every place the version appears | container/deps/requirements.sglang.txt:37 and :59 only. pyproject.toml:510 lists diffusers as a mypy override, not a version. The base_sboms rows are inventory of the TensorRT-LLM base image |
container/context.yaml |
No diffusers or safetensors key, at the top level or under any device key. Zero matches for either name |
| Per-device effect | The XPU branch of sglang_runtime.Dockerfile:206 filters only PyNvVideoCodec and mooncake-transfer-engine-cuda13, so both new lines apply on XPU as well |
safetensors>=0.8.0,<1 resolves to 0.8.0, which the image already carries, so it is a same-version reinstall today. It is a guard against a future base that drops below the diffusers floor, not a change in what ships.
Not verified: no container build and no diffusion request. The cap stays a precaution, which is what the note now says.
Outstanding: one P3 on the sentence that compares this cap to a TensorRT-LLM one. Non-blocking.

[P3] The note points at a <0.40 cap on the TensorRT-LLM side that this repository does not contain. container/deps/requirements.sglang.txt:27. The next reader cannot check the comparison. Please drop the sentence, or name where that cap lives.
Grep at the live head: no diffusers entry and no 0.40 cap outside this file
$ grep -n diffusers container/deps/requirements.trtllm.txt
(no output)
$ grep -rIn --exclude-dir=.git --exclude-dir=compliance -E '<0\.40|0\.40\.0' container/
container/deps/requirements.sglang.txt:24,25,27,28,30,34,37
requirements.trtllm.txt names no diffusers requirement at all, so it has no cap to compare against. No open pull request adds one either. The only diffusers rows under container/compliance/base_sboms/ are 0.39.0 in the TensorRT-LLM release SBOM, which is what the image bundles rather than a cap this repository sets.
Overview:
sglang[diffusion]==0.5.19pinsdiffusers==0.37.0exactly, so the resolver cannot lift it and the upstreamlmsysorg/sglangimage ships that release. This floorsdiffusersat0.38.0inrequirements.sglang.txt, which is the one place in the build where that pin can be overlaid.Details:
requirements.sglang.txtinstalls--force-reinstall --no-deps, deliberately, so it can refresh packages the upstream image bundles without re-resolving SGLang's dependency solution. That is the existing mechanism thepillowentry above already uses, and it is the only route past an exact upstream pin: a floor inpyproject.tomlwould make thesglang[diffusion]extra unresolvable.The
safetensorsentry is not incidental.diffusers0.38.0 raises its own floor fromsafetensors>=0.3.1tosafetensors>=0.8.0, and--no-depswill not pull that in, so the requirement is declared explicitly rather than left to whatever the base image happens to carry.sglang0.5.19 pinstransformers==5.12.1, which asks only forsafetensors>=0.4.3, so the base is free to sit below 0.8.0.Both entries are bounded below the next major, matching the
pillow>=12.3.0,<13convention in this file - with--force-reinstallan unbounded floor resolves to whatever is newest at build time.The upstream fix is a one-line pin relaxation in SGLang. Worth filing separately; this unblocks the image in the meantime and becomes a no-op once SGLang widens the pin.
